Re:AHA!
Stallone wrote and starred in an Oscar-winning movie. I think you have to have a few brain cells to pull something like that off - What have you done that's so smart?
-
You may actually have a valid point there
During the last elections we saw how the anti-war sentiment that has grown over the years have from one day to another given the democrats a rather huge lead in the house. As of now there is nothing to indicate this won't happen in the coming presidential elections as well (the republicans are still pro-war and each of their candidates are simply put quite unpopular).
Though corruption makes no distinction between party lines (if you think democrats are not being bought off by huge corporations just as easily you're fooling yourself) there is also a substantial amount democrats who'd like to grab Halliburton (and to a lesser extend Cheney & friends) by the balls. And seeing as the Iraq war was (from the perspective of Halliburton) merely a risky but profitable investment (though it would have been far more profitable if the Iraqis had "cooperated" as "planned" and helped sell out their country's oil) they would have nothing to fear as long as their republican cronies led by Cheney were still to remain in office.
Seeing as the tides may shift though, they apparently decided to relocate their HQs to a place were US law (and any sort of law enforcement for that matter) could not reach them.
For some background on how the war basically shifted billions of the US tax payers' dollars to Halliburton and other US "no-bid contract" companies while tens of thousands of people lost their lifes violently have a look at the documentary Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers (2006). -
My Favorite PartFrom the AT&T brief:
Moreover, as this Court has explained, although a dismissal in contexts like this one may appear "harsh" for the individual plaintiffs, the "greater public good," and "ultimately the less harsh remedy," is the protection of military and intelligence secrets the release of which could harm the public's safety.
My favorite part is that AT&T's lawyers feel that the terms "harsh," "greater public good," and "ultimately the less harsh remedy" all need to be put in quotes, as though they are abstract concepts that need an "ad hoc" definition. I think I'll just turn my cynicism engine on full blast and crawl into a corner somewhere.
It makes me feel like I'm getting a patronizing lecture on law and freedom from Bill Lumbergh from Office Space. Or getting hand-parentheses from the finger quotes lady.

Re:Glad the UN is concentrating on important matteYour comment about the UN deconstructing phrases reminds me of Life of Brian with the People's Front of Judea.
For example:
"Brian: Thank God you've come, Reg.
Reg: Well, I think I should point out first, Brian, in all fairness, we are not, in fact, the rescue committee. However, I have been asked to read the following prepare statement on behalf of the movement. "We the People's Front of Judea, brackets, officials, end brackets, do hereby convey our sincere fraternal and sisterly greetings to you, Brian, on this, the occasion of your martyrdom. "
Brian: What?
Reg: "Your death will stand as a landmark in the continuing struggle to liberate the parent land from the hands of the Roman imperialist aggressors, excluding those concerned with drainage, medicine, roads, housing, education, viniculture and any other Romans contributing to the welfare of Jews of both sexes and hermaphrodites. Signed, on behalf of the P. F. J. , etc. " And I'd just like to add, on a personal note, my own admiration, for what you're doing for us, Brian, on what must be, after all, for you a very difficult time. " -
Re:Quick French Lesson For PostersClinton did not "pretty much ignore Iraq",
You're right. He ignored Islamofascism. (But the Republicans would have also.)
They said he was trying to "wag the dog" and that there wasn't a real threat from Saddam, it was all just hype
You are referring to Clinton shooting some cruise missiles at Sudan and Afghanistan 3 days after his finger-wagging "I have not had sexual relations with that woman" speech and the day of his Grand Jury (which he lied to and was thus disbarred) testimony, and was a throw-back to the movie /Canadian Bacon/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109370/). -
Re:Hey look, just for Slashdot!lol.. Are you talking about me or the AC i was in reply to? If ti was me, I will kindly restate what I said.
In reply to an AC who insinuated that we would need to weaponize space to implement a plan like this because a treaty with no enforcment is a treaty that has no effect. I then replied withActualy it does. It works under the considition that air based lasors that we are attempting to build works. We can deny any country access to space by this weapon alone if it works as advertised.
Were do you see anything claiming it is working today? Were do you see anything claiming it isn't fiction? I then went one to describe a possible scenario. You can tell it wasn't true by the wording The situation would be something like this,
So you seem to think it is impossible and I pointed out a team that think it isn't.
But ahh.. I see were the problem of disconect is now. You weren't talking to me at all, You were talking to the guy who made the reference to the movie "real genius" staring val kilmer.
I don't think he was trying to be serious. I was though. -

Don't get your hopes up. The movie Firefox is ranked at #14,185 for DVD sales on Amazon.com. Having a browser of the same name didn't help it one bit!

GNAA announces switch to Windows VistaGNAA announces switch to Windows Vista
fellacious (GNAP) Intercourse, PA - Windows Vista appears to finally be taking off, at least within one Fortune 100 company. The GNAA had for the past 13 years been using Red Hat Linux and it's successor, Fedora Core, but growing discontent with the free software operating system forced CTO Jmax to declare on Wednesday that the company was to be switching its entire infrastructure to the new version of Windows, effective immediately. "I'm not going to theatrically claim that I wasn't expecting to have to do this," Jmax said. "This has been coming for quite some time." The GNAA's troubles with Red Hat's Linux system included chronic governance problems, a persistent failure to maintain key repositories, a complex and undocumented submission process which has kept the GNAA's free trolling utilities off the Red Hat-based desktops of thousands of would-be trolls, inability to keep RPM up to date, and a failure to address the problem of Firefox not crashing a entire computer when the user loads Last Measure. "The deal-breaker, though, was when a key Last Measure server remained down for four hours while our entire Intercourse development team tried desperately to bring it up despite not having statically-linked package manager binaries." What had happened was Dikky, visiting from Norway, wanted to play the child pornography mod of Doom 3 on that server- which had to drag several libraries with it. "In addition," said Jmax, "several key software applications used in the GNAA's corporate workflow are proprietary software- which means that they had to be run in an Ubuntu compatibility environment anyway." However, being as those unnamed applications were written in C#.NET, "We expect that our transition to Windows Vista will come off without a hitch."
About Jmax:
The CTO of the GNAA, Jmax also has a seat on Microsoft's board of directors. His resume can be accessed at http://goatse.fr/.
About Windows Vista:
The fastest-growing desktop operating system on the market, Windows Vista combines the legendary security of Windows 98 with the legendary ease of use of those computer interfaces you see in the movies into one ultra-fast, ultra-stable computing platform.
About Red Hat:
A failure of a computer company, Red Hat burns through investor money while giving its products away for free. It is currently under investigation from the SEC for misuse of invested funds, and being sued by the GNAA for breach of contract for sucking more than specified in the GNAA's contract with Red Hat.

CNN HQ Stormed By Elite GNAA OperativesCNN HQ Stormed By Elite GNAA Operatives, Classified 9/11 Information Broadcast
pagga (GNAP) - Manchester, AfghanistanFollowing a covert infiltration of their Tel-Aviv headquarters by a crack team of elite GNAA agents, Zionist news organization CNN today publicly declassified top-secret information regarding the September 11 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, information which was until now actively supressed by the Zionist Occupied Governments of the West. Thousands of jewish viewers across America choked on their evening halvah (muslim babies) as, in a primetime broadcast, Paula Zahn (herself a latent jew) was forced at dongpoint to reveal the awful truth behind the 9/11 attacks which the rest of the civilized (read: non-judaic) world has long suspected: Jews Did WTC.
Fast-forwarding past the 1080p CP on the greasy HD-DVD handed to them by bedpan, the CNN production team played back the devastating GNAA-compiled footage whilst Paula Zahn held back a rectal prolapse to present their findings. Irrefutable proof from highly credible sources (such as regarded public information portals jewsdidwtc.com & Encyclopedia Dramatica) was disclosed in order to finally put an end to the debate. In the interests of equal representation, a token jew was present for the post-footage discussion, together with a panel of gay niggers.
In the unlikely event that you missed this historic broadcast, it has been archived at JewTube.
Want to know more? See the proof for yourself @ http://www.jewsdidwtc.com and Encyclopedia Dramatica.

Re:The education connection
Warning: flamebait ahead
*Practical* education correlates rightward in politics.
Interestingly enough, gather up a bunch of completely uneducated folk. Think your average redneck country bumpkin. Now, if that population isn't Republican-voting on a 5-to-1 ratio, I'd be shocked. Seems like it must be a lot easier to convince the uneducated to vote based on fear (the playbook of the GOP).
You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.

Re:Apple: a monopoly... doing good?
Does anyone honestly think that The Shins would be so popular without iTune's help?
Wow. It's not like The Shins didn't get first rate exposure in Garden State. It's not like they are experiencing great radio play on just about every alternative radio station.
Just because iTunes plays them doesn't mean it's their only avenue to success. Perhaps Wincing the Night Away was their most "mainstream" album (it was IMHO as it sucks compared to their others). -

Re:You mean like CNN?
A pricelessly funny example of that sort of thing was in the movie "Thank You for Smoking" where a US Senator is screaming at a subordinate about how the "cancer boy" they provided for a television talk show didn't look sufficiently hopeless. If you haven't seen the movie, it's highly recommended.
These days, 99.99% of the reporting is drowning in spin from some side or other because reporters now feel like they have to convey "truthiness" and "perspective" (or their version of it) rather than just hard facts. Some of this is because news organizations have to make money to exist, and if they pander to one side or the other it attacts eyeballs (Fox on the Right, NBC on the left are the extreme examples). Like politicians, they've figured out that they can "divide and conquor" - get people to take dogmatic positions on an issue and "join the team" so to speak. After all, it saves people the trouble of thinking for themselves and making up their own minds - a major hassle in today's busy world. Nearly all of the news media has come to justify this by saying it adds value and is some sort of public service, and they've begun to thoroughly buy their own bullshit. This is compounded by the laziness factor - a very significant amount of "reportage" out there just takes press releases and rewords them slightly (if that). If I want to get an article about my business printed in a local newspaper or magazine, I pretty much just write the article for them or it doesn't happen. -

I know what I like, and I like Dogs at Cards!
It seems that this guy doesn't understand what "art" is. Besides being in the eye of the beholder it is also working with what you have. An good artist should be able to create something artful with nearly anything he or she has at hand. Saying that Nintendo doesn't care about games as an art form because their machine is not as powerful as someone else's is just admitting one's own weakness. As Frank Costello pointed out in The Departed "Lennon said, 'I'm an artist. You give me a f*cking tuba, I'll get you something out of it.'"
Further more what qualifies this joker to say nintendo and the wii are incapable of making artful games. Until he has had the same successes as someone like Shigeru Miyamoto or especially in this case Will Wright maybe he should keep his trap shut and do his bosses bidding. -
But do you have to...

Desperado Bar Scene
Which is why the scene in the bar in Desperado was so cool when the guns kept running out of ammo or were empty when picked up. Finally, it was realistic to some degree. Good God, did I just use the word 'realistic' to describe "Desperado?"

High Noon
And of course, High Noon ran in real time as well.

Re:Been there, done that.
I can think of one movie where this myth doesn't appear: Chan-wook Park's excellent Oldboy. There's a fight scene lasting around two minutes, and it's just one long take with no cuts. Not only is the protagonist very tired after the fight, but the actor was actually tired as well. Also, even though he takes on a bunch of guys by himself, they still managed to make it look like it could be completely plausible.
-
Re:Number #1 broken rule
Time is rarely shown as continuous, forward moving, and in real time.
Try Rope by Hitchcock. It was shot in "real time" using a series of continuous takes, each exactly as long as the maximum length of a movie reel available at the time.
Its a great movie to boot. -
127 Days to Bellus!....

Point of view
Children of Men was a very underhyped recent movie that had an extremely "real" feel to it largely due to its staying with the protagonist's point of view for the entiritey of the film. Seriously some of the best continuous action shots ever. Highly recommended.

If so, I'd agree with you that a movie has to be pretty bad to top that one. Here's one that easily bests it at being horrible: Reptilicus. :) -

Well, as Reid and you said, we wont get the savings passed on in terms of lower ticket prices, but we might have the savings passed on in terms of a better list of films to choose from.
Personally, the abysmal selection is the strongest factor in keeping me away from the theater right now. I wouldn't be going every week if they offered that better lineup, but I'd be going a hell of alot more often than I do now. The prices are ... somewhat steep sure, but I'm willing to pay for a good experience. I'm just not willing to pay to see Norbit.
