I think Jobs figured he could best manipulate the loosened moving ground under the feet of Cingular. With AT&T swallowing them, it seems like managment might have had a "nothing to lose" frame of mind when they agreed to Jobs' terms. I'm sure the tone amongst the execs at Cingular and AT&T was not too unlike an episode of "Survivor" where alliances and rivalries can make or break your chance to stay when it comes time to let people go.

Oh yeah, about the first part of your post: I don't know if what you assert is true--from the other things you say I don't trust you, but that neither makes you right or wrong, only someone whose statements don't count. But I do know that Wikipedia fanbois are fond of making comparisons to carefully chosen articles (Hey, look! 2 good articles, IMHO! That's statistically significant!), but a real encyclopedia is full of good articles.

Absolutely awesome art direction, great puzzles, great story.

I don't want to give away too much of the story. It's a mystery novel with a film noir touch. It feels a bit like Angel Heart. Now clearly, the game can't be reviewed as a book. If this were a book, the story would be severely flawed: The story is mainly told through the dialogs you have with other people and a few monologues by the main character. It's also obvious that they made sure the story would regularly incorporate puzzles, which means that there are some story lines which would probably not occur in a real book (for example, after a kid locks herself in a dark room, you first have to turn the energy back on so the kid isn't scared anymore, and then unlock the door from the outside - that whole episode was clearly introduced to create room for two puzzles, not because it helps the story).

So while the story is an important part of the game, it's hardly fair to judge the game based on the story's merrit alone. It's the combination of all elements which makes game so interesting.

Still, the game plays like an interactive book with some puzzles sprinkled throughout the story. It's a great story, and a great game, but I'm guessing that if you don't like to read books, you'll probably not like this game. Similarly, if you love books, but don't like games, this game can't stand on the story alone, so you will not like it either. This game is for people who both love games and love books, and want to see more interaction in books, or more and better stories in games. It's also for those of you who love Adventures and don't mind dialog-heavy games.

For those two groups of people, the game is simply awesome.

Thanks for saying this. I remember years ago when The Last Temptation of Christ was in theaters, it was controversial where I lived (Dallas, TX), and theaters were picketed. Some chose not to show it, and others cried "censorship!" when this happened.

Looking back on it, it was probably pointless and stupid to picket the theaters, and I think it was wrong for anyone to demand that theaters not show the movie, but it was not censorship. Freedom of speech means that the government cannot restrict you from saying what you wish. It does not mean that anyone else is somehow obligated to help you say it. If they were, that would be a restriction on their freedom. The people who owned the theaters had the right to make a business decision not to show the movie if they thought that would win them brownie points with the protesters. And that's as it should be. The alternative would be to live in a country where some government authority could force a movie theater to show movies it didn't want to show, which would be asinine.
