Re:first its not stealing post
The actual issue that people who created things years ago have stopped doing any interesting new work or contributing to society, yet still expect to get paid?
Or the actual issue that these copyrights do nothing but stifle everything except "approved creativity". Ask Apotheosis about that one.
Maybe the actual issue of companies like Disney leeching off of public domain works and parlaying them into a profit, but then lobbying to keep their work out of the public domain and giving others the same benefit they had?
Or maybe you just wish you were one of those entitled "artists" in the above categories. -

Re:I don't agree!!
Nothing internationally known, but if you ever get the chance check out Bad Taste(aliens) or Brain Dead(zombies), both great silly splatter/gross out movies on a low budget. Whether you consider them good or not may be a matter of taste, but they show that PJ clearly has talent and had a hell of a lot of fun making them.

MS MovieStudio
Why doesn't Microsoft spend $200M promoting their games and everything else by making a Halo movie? It couldn't be any worse than the Doom movie. Which lost about 50% of its $70M budget in theaters, but is making plenty more in endless cable/TV syndication.
If MS went that route, and had the same "success", it could be spending a couple-few dozen million on marketing Halo to the much wider audience of moviegoers. Since Halo is still a more popular brand than was "Doom" when its movie was released, it could even show a profit in theaters+cable.
And of course the marketing value to MS could be enormous. For all its ubiquity, the MS product line is rarely featured, or even product-placed, in scenes in movies. MS could reinforce its brand across the board, across the world, even projecting it into people's imaginations of "the future", by making a movie.
Since so much of MS is just for show anyway, this seems a natural project, even long overdue. -

Re:I don't agree!!
Ironically enough, Peter Jackson didn't have a whole lot of directing experience, especially big budget experience, before doing Lord of the Rings. Check out his filmography. It was a bold move on the studios' part to entrust so much money to him, but now I doubt there's a studio around that wouldn't love to shower him with hundreds of millions.

Re:Plus...
Plus movies made after video games aren't exactly destined to become classics.
I don't know, I always found Super Mario Bros. to be quite a fine piece of cinema. John Leguizamo as Luigi, BRILLIANT!

Re:A Prediction
The original poster claimed that the US wasn't "morally right" to deny countries nuclear weapons.
Only the US has actually used nuclear weapons in a war. And that was when other countries did not have their own nuclear weapons to deter us. These days, mutually-assured destruction makes the use of nuclear weapons stupid. Dr. Strangelove shows how it works.
I challenge you to come up with a foreign-policy that's "morally right" according to all moral codes (past, present, and future) and based on ideas that have historically proven successful.
Let's try the Swiss policy of minding our own business. "Don't get involved in other people's affairs", as it is said. Let's try true free trade, non-agression, defense of our country, but no offense in other countries. This does not prevent us from building missile defenses and such.
Imagine how much less of our tax money we would spend if we didn't send our troops around the world to defend our the business interests of our pet companies that pay off politicians for the protection. -
Re:ShhhhhhhhhAnyone know of any Mac Usenet clients that are well suited for downloading binaries? And are there any websites out there that list how the groups are set up (for example, is alt.binaries.dvd going to have Silent Running or do I search in alt.oldmovies.whatever)?
Thanks!

What Van Allan belt? Don't you know it caught fire and was blown up by an atomic missile back in the early '60s?

ice pirates
In 1994, there was speculation that there might be a southern ice cap on the moon -- something our exploration of it could take advantage of. Unfortunately, recent evidence has come to light revealing that this probably isn't true.
Lucky for us! now we don't have to worry about the ice pirates. -

Idiocracy
There is a movie out at this very moment that most people will not hear about, nor see, that is based on this very premise.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387808/
Unfortunately Mike Judge had a tiff with the Studio, so it didn't get the love it really needed. Still a pretty funny movie with a good vehicle for their gags, though. -
Gattaca & Socialism Doom Theory
The brilliant film Gattaca has been there, done that, and shows the early stages of the two "races" separating genetically. But part of the central story also shows how impossible it would be to keep the two human populations separate and avoid constant interbreeding. And who wouldn't interbreed with Uma Thurman anyways?
Dr. Curry's theory is also doomed by the tenacity of egalitarian and socialist tendancies in human societies. As more & more of the world's populations become more affluent and able to afford more health care, for example, they will insist on universal genetic health coverage too. Controlling genetic diseases in the zygote before they occur will be the first step towards large-scale mental & physical abilities. -

Re:Overpopulation: Overblown?I'll grant we can probably figure out some way to "exist" with 9 billion people on the planet.
But only 1% of them will have a good life and the other 99% are going to live very constrained existances.
There is already a good movie based on this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070723/ .In all seriousness, though, those who are alive will want to survive any way they can, and those who have already inserted themselves at the top ("old money") will stay there and only occasionally boot the wealthy-but-not-quite-so-wealthy ones to the level of the proles as resources become more and more scarce.

Re:Reporters should not be agents of the state.Wired News -- and Kevin -- have shown that writing a splashy story means more to them right now than the danger of blurring the lines between reporter and cop. This isn't about protecting kids, or about what MySpace should or should not do. It's about eroding the role of the journalist as a fair and impartial witness, in a time when too many people are already barking up that tree.
Huh?
Ever hear of Watergate? Or "Fletch?"
ps. it is about protecting kids.

Re:Interesting
But that's exactly what's interesting about motion CAPTURE. If you can capture everything in enough detail, then you can record and store the "real" expressions by doing unexpected things to the actors in real life (e.g. Alan Rickman's face at the end of Die Hard, search for "get the right reaction" on that page). Instead of doing 20 takes to get everyone doing the right thing at the right time, the filmmaker can capture a real-life emotion and then blend it onto an animated character at any arbitrary point in the action. Eventually, actors or studios may develop libraries of such motion capture sequences. Putting it all together on a set at a specific instant in time on cue will no longer be as important.

Re:TARDIS is quite apt...
More like the eyepatched small white mouse secret agent with a hamster as a sidekick is losing his stateside vacation home.
The telephone booth is more apt as the comparator to the Police Box, and they've been disappearing for quite some time now, except we think of them more as places for superheroes to change into costume, despite also being used for time travel.
The blue corner mailbox only resembles the Police Box in its former ubiquity and color. The American Police Box is the Emergency Pole which have a light on the top and a single button to press to contact the police through something more kin to an intercom than a telephone. Those of the TARDIS variety you enter by walking behind it and utilizing a split-screen effect to disappear inside, similar to the general method of entry into the Master's TARDIS when in its various forms without obvious entryways. -

Complain to the USERS of spamhous
They are the ones that are actually doing the blocking.
What they can do if the domain is suspended is to have domains available in each and every country in the world.
As so many providers use the service as well, donating domains should be not an issue. Each and every time some domains could be donated and people just pick 10 of them so that if one is down due to a legal issue, another can be used.
The best solution is indeed to just open the floods for one day. Unfortunatly sept, 18th is already past, because it would have been the releasedate that could have been named after this movie -
Re:Dog collars.
I'm recalling a sick B movie where prisoners were fitted with collars linked to the perimeter - try to escape and the head is blown up.
If I'm not mistaken this was in The Running Man as well. -

Sigh... Like Cyborgs?
You might want to watch "Natural City".
I liked the special effects, the androids, and the visual related to facials and cranials. Even the scenes where human bones are broken by a particularly ruthless android/robot are "chilling" I got my copy at Virgin for $24.99. You can also get it at Border's. Probably 5 or 6 other places.
SPOILER WARNINGS!

Despite there being any DVD 9 on Tartan DVDs, it runs fine in Kaffeine and Xine, and I'm on Mandriva 10.1
Oh, and I agree with what LoveHKFilm said:
"It must be said again: the production design is damn fine. What director Min Byung-Chun and company have accomplished here rivals anything out of Hollywood's SFX handbook, and probably at a fraction of the cost."
These help:
"Natural City attempts to placate both the thinkers and the bloodthirsty in one glorious widescreen go."
"The carnage is kind of cool, but not entirely consistent."
"However, in grand Korean Cinema style, tragedy and bad vibes are nearly guaranteed. If you've seen any Korean Cinema before, you should know this: it's going to get melodramatic, and if the filmmakers can pull it off, they'll send all their characters straight to hell in a body bag." -

Re:Unsure what to make of this
I have the correct solution... Jackie Chan has been wanting to make a firefighter movie for years... And now he has his chance. The plot would be, exactly this. Neds getting firefighters to a neighborhood only to throw stones at the poor firemen. Only this time... Its Jackie! and he's pissed! Chairs, doors, tables, TVs, refrigerators all on fire... but Jackie uses them all as prop weapons! I'm so submitting this one!

GNAAGNAA investigators make unprecedented breakthrough in Reiser case
GNAA investigators make unprecedented breakthrough in Reiser caseHugo Atse (GNAP) Oakland, CA - Worldwide GNAA agency private investigators Gary Niger and Penny Sbird, trying to link two suspicious criminal cases to Mossad activity, described as "devastating horror" the new evidence they found in the Hans Reiser case.
Hans Reiser, a well known attention whore in the Opensores community who has been struggling for ages to get a pathetically underperforming and unreliable filesystem into the Linux kernel, is being detained for the murder of famous tramp Rob Levin (known as "liLOL" to the Internet community).
Niger and Sbird claim they have found stains of Levin's semen in Reiser's car. They also noticed the car, a large pink bus in the shape of a hypodermic phallus, was missing a seat. It is, according to Sbird, "evidence enough that Reiser brutally sodomised Levin to death, and had to dispose of the seat because Levin's massive body would not fit in the car otherwise".
Reiser's estranged wife, covert Jewish Russian agent Nina "Nenashat" Reiser from Moscow-based Vladimir Bonars hookers agency. was not available for comment. She was last seen celebrating the memory of 9/11 victims by flying her private airplane into a Manhattan building on 10/11.
About Rob Levin:

Anethetise passengers, strip them down, scan them, pack them in fire retardant survival packs, then load them on to a cargo plane. Problem solved.
Just like the transportation we see in the commercial "airliner" in The Fifth Element?
I actually thought that was very cool. Get onboard, go to sleep, and wake up when you've arrived.
Sitting idle on an 11 hour flight must be one of the dullest times I've ever spent in my life. Especially if we keep having more and more restrictions placed on us. The temporary "no food", and "no books" restrictions earlier this year made me pleased I'll not have to fly anywhere distant soon.
