Dark Angel was listed as #19 which I thought was a reasonable enough placement given the other rankings present. That was a show I loved, it was a shame it was cancelled and didn't really complete the story...

Like many I thought the list was bogus, and gave too many high ratings to "current" shows, eg. BSG / Atlantis.

Still it was a fun reminder of series I used to watch. Funnily enough I was only watching a rip of Thundercats last night!

Futurama would of been higher up if they hadn't cancelled it. I mean with community sites like "Can't Get Enough Futurama" organizing signature drives in the 10k's and sales of the DVD compilations setting records for sales it would be madness not to do something more with the franchise than comic books. The rumored direct to DVD movie coming out in 2007 will hopefully see a return of the series if it sells well enough.

That's why people still buy software, DVDs, CDs, etc., with crippling copy protection.

What crippling copy protection is that? I haven't had any trouble duplicating any of those things. DVDs are the "hardest," and DVD Shrink does those for me automatically on the rare occasions when e.g. I want to de-regioncode Wonderful Days so it plays on the DVD player in my living room.

The copy "protection" on current media is at worst an inconvenience. I rarely notice it, and when I do it's more like having to pat the RIAA/MPAA on the head and give them a gold star sticker for effort.

If they implement the things they *really* want, like Divx-style remote authentication, self-destructing players, et cetera, that will be a different story. People are not going to accept those kinds of restricitons on the things they buy.

First off, the point is, the MX couldn't have contributed to the collapse, since the numbers they had to "keep up with" was 5, when the Soviet Union already had hundreds of missles stockpiled. There was no threat to counter.

The Soviet Union collapsed under its own weight. Ronald Reagan had nothing to do with it. The belief that he won the Cold War basically hinges on Reagan saying, "Mr. Gorbechev, tear down this wall!", and then Gorby saying, "Holy shit! Better do what the Gipper says, or he'll sick Bonzo on us!"

The real cause of the collapse has more to do with the intrinsic inefficiencies in command economies. Especially command economies where the commands are enforced under penalty of death. The Kremlin tells you to make 50 widgets for 10 rubles each, you'll make 50 widgets and say they cost 10 rubles each. The may have cost 12, but you're sure as hell aren't going to say that, since you'll be sent off the gulag for failure. So produce them for a loss. Repeat across pretty much all sectors of the economy, and repeat for 70 years, and of course the economy is going to fail. Why do you think China is now effectively a capitalist economy?

Did Reagan's SDI (aka "Star Wars") plan have anything to do with Soviet collapse? Not according to the Gorbechev and the KGB. When SDI was announced, Gorby asked if it was a threat, and the KGB said no. They (rightfully) said that any antiballistic missle system has intrinsic engineering challenges that the US couldn't overcome with the technology currently available, or even available in the near term. And effective countermeasures to the proposed systems were already available. This is a bit off topic, but since we're talking about cursing, well, what the hell.

There's a movie by the name of The Aristocrats floating around in the art house cinema circuit right now that is all about profanity and shock. If any of you have seen a South Park clip where Cartman is telling a particularly vile joke to the other boys that none of them seems to understand, you've seen the bit that Trey Parker and Matt Stone did for this movie (and trust me, that's one of the most boring bits in it).

Penn Gilette (of Penn & Teller) got the idea in his head to make a sort of documentary about this format joke called The Aristocrats, whose sole purpose is to be as vile and vulgar as possible. Comedians won't typically perform it in public because it'd be censored utterly in any venue. Instead, they tell it to each other as a kind of secret handshake... the joke really brings out each comedian's style clearly when they tell it.

There's about a hundred comedians on the cast list, and it contains just about every one you've ever heard of. See for yourself over at IMDB.

You won't find it in any major chain, since it's unrated (the profanity would have undoubtedly merited an NC-17). You probably can find it in some of these independent theaters.

No torrents yet. I suspect it's damn hard to pirate a film out of an art house... if the patrons catch you, chances are you won't last long enough for the police to arrive and haul you off. The DVD will be on sale from ThinkFilm in a few months if you can't find it elsewhere.

I would still argue that there exists an incentive to keep hosts relatively healthy to ensure that the virus spreads as far as possible and survives as long as possible. Viruses with no ill side effects or no detectable side effects at all tend to get less attention than viruses which make their hosts drop dead. Viruses which attract too much attention tend to get actively erradicated.

The other critical difference between biological viruses and electronic viruses is that, unlike biological viruses which rise out of random evolution, electronic viruses are still[1] created by intelligent designers who often have ulterior motives above and beyond maximizing survival of the virus. Electronic viruses are able to turn their hosts into zombies which the virus creator can enslave towards his own ends (usually some form of criminal financial gain).

[1] It's unclear whether we will ever see electronic viruses created by something other than humans. It seems unlikely to happen anytime soon, but if you believe in a future like Ghost In The Shell, then who knows!

I've seen a few good suggestions posted, but the king of this "relatively untapped genre" would have to be Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat, starring David Carridine (from Kung Fu) as Dracula and Bruce Campbell (from Evil Dead) as Van Helsing.

Not that it's a good movie or anything (it's not), but if you've ever seen it, it does define the "Vampire Cowboy" genre more than most things out there.
