Why Nosferatu, Not Metropolis?
Jaymzter,
It seems to me that Metropolis would proved more furtile for analysis of German culture during that period, particularly as I find your points of comparison a litte stretched. Out of interest, what was the rationale behind the choice of Nosferatu?
As a layman, my guess is that Metropolis may have been done to death.. -
GNAA Launches Attack on Slashdot Parent CompanyGNAA Launches Attack on Slashdot Parent Company
Fremont, CaliforniaThe Holiday of Jew's Revenge, September 11th, was bloodied once again this year. Officials say Gay Nigger Association of America member Tar_Baby stole a Cessna jet from a nearby airfield and crashed it into Open Source Technology Group headquarters, completely demolishing the building, as well as crushing and incinerating everyone inside.
Audio logs recovered via the jet's black box portrayed a disturbing course of events onboard the plane. Passengers were heard screaming for their lives as the terrorist raped and killed the male members of the plane by what was thought to be rupturing their colons with a gigantic black dildo with nails punched out the sides, based on evidence collected at the scene.
Within minutes of the attack, GNAA officials telephoned major news networks claiming responsibility, and promised to continue their campaign of destruction as long as an Open Source movement still existed. This is believed to be the major tenet of the 'Gay Nigger Jihad', first mentioned months ago during GNAA's campaign against AOL.
This comes almost simultaneously after OSTG recently changed their name from the Open Source Development Network (OSDN), in attempt to distance itself from name long associated with failure, stupidity, zealotry, and Cowboyneal. It was also part of a last ditch effort to convince investors not to steal a Cessna and fly it into the headquarters themselves.
Update: A few hours after the crash, the rescue team found what is believed to be the only survivor. CmdrTaco was found in a coma inside OSTG basement, still firmly gripping his tiny cock. In his other hand, he was holding a photo of a muscular black male, signed by "Gary Niger of GNAA". CmdrTaco was rushed to a hospital, and his condition remains critical.

Steamboy
Another new Steampunk movie is this Anime title; Steamboy.

Re:Recommended anime... reminds me of two recent anime.
There's another one: Castle in the Sky (that's the english re-release name, anyways) by Miyazaki. Check out the walking robots in the trailers -- they look very similar to the guard/caretaker bots in the Miyazaki film. Also the blimp-warships, and the overall look/feel.
-
Castle in the Sky / LaputaI've only seen the TV trailers, but I get the distinct impression that the Miyazaki film "Castle in the Sky" served as the inspiration for the visuals. Not only in the blimp-battleships, but also those walking robots -- with the rope-like arms and the uneven eyes.
I definitely need to see this movie, if nothing else than to check for more similarities.

Forgetting the title... Lol
Don't forget Tin Men...
I haven't forgotten it, but I think you might have forgotten some aspects of it, like the title .
The film were Billy-Bob met Ms Jolie is actually entitled Pushing Tin.
Tin men, also a good film, is about cynical, dishonest, aluminum siding salesman in 1950s Baltimore.
As for the comments suggesting Ms Jolie is some kind of psycho... two points. First, it may be worth bearing in mind that this image of her as a psycho sells papers. She may be a lot more benignly eccentric than psycho. Second, Billy-Bob is probably just as "psycho" as as Ms Jolie.

Re:Larry NivenHasn't done anything for me in a while... Donald Kingsbury on the other hand, he writes a great book!
Someone to add to the stack when I'm done with all the other series on my bookshelf. BattleTech, which I read for years has pretty much died, thanks to FASA going bust after
... uh ... selling the video gaming rights to Microsoft (seems it happened to another Illinois company, subLogic) and the latest incarnation involved dumping the whole timeline and jumping forward 50 years or something. Bah!Next I was into Terry Pratchett and have pretty well caught up, though Going Postal will be out in October. The UK (where I get my copies thankyouverymuch) has the usual cool artwork, which bears a striking resemblance to something else.
(Just had and earthquake while typing this, strong one from the feel of it.)
I never had much respect for Niven's writing partner, Jerry Pournelle, who I felt put a lot of crock into his columns in Byte and kinda held it against him. (About 15 years ago I told an anonymous person in a chatroom on GEnie that I thought he was a poo-head for not considering the hazzards of debris in orbit, turned out the anonymous was his wife. I hope she tole him

Re:PulleeezI tend to agree--if I buy a pay per view movie, it's because I don't think the movie is actually good enough to warrant "owning" the DVD. So limited time for pay per views doesn't bother me. BUT you do make a better point than I think you realize when you say, "you paid a certain price to watch a movie for a certain period of time." That's true and fair. But as of right now, that certain price is $3.95 or whatever and that certain period of time is indefinitely. If they want to take away the ability to record and watch it for a shorter period of time than indefinitely, then the price needs to come down. Granted I think the movie industry is a lot further along in terms of giving the comsumer a fair price than the music industry. Think about this:
A movie is the sum of the work of hundreds of people: actors, writers, directors, musicians, makeup, effects, stunts...I see about 400 people listed in http://imdb.com/ for one of my favorite movies, The Shawshank Redemption. You can buy the DVD for $16.38 at Amazon. The soundtrack of the movie is $14.99. Does the DVD really only offer $1.39 more entertainment value? Or cost roughly only 10% more to make? Of course not.

1) Why is the STARGATE theme in the teaser trailer? Why did they steal the music from Stargate? Will this movie have an original soundtrack?
Because the trailer editor thought it envoked the right mood, and the Paramount marketing people didn't say, no and it wasn't too expensive to license. Its been used in other trailers, and there are Star Gate Freaks all over the internet freaking out on this for some reason.
The score is one of the last parts of a film to be developed. A teaser trailer usually has to be released well before the composer has been able to do much work, if any.
Music from Stargate has been used in the following trailers:
Dragonheart (1995) - Theatrical Trailer
Independence Day (1996) - Theatrical Trailer
Jumanji (1995) - Theatrical Trailer
Lost in Space (1998) - Theatrical Trailer
The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) - Theatrical Trailer
Mighty Joe Young (1998) - Theatrical Trailer
The Mummy (1999) - Theatrical Trailer
Volcano (1997) - Theatrical Trailer
Warriors of Virtue (1997) - Theatrical Trailer
Waterworld (1995) - Theatrical Trailer
Mission to Mars (2000) - TV Trailer
Titan A.E. (2000) - TV Trailer
Dungeons & Dragons (2000) - Theatrical Trailer
Deep Rising (1998) - TV Trailer
The Time Machine (2002) - Theatrical Trailer
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002) - TV Trailer
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) - Teaser Trailer
The music is from the original Stargate movie, and was adapted for Stargate SG-1.
It also features music from "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within". (It's the music from Aki's dream sequence)
They did not "steal" this music. It's called "licensing"
The second trailer doesn't use the Stargate music.
Yes, the movie will use original music composed by Ed Shearmur.
It's getting rave reviews, and will be released Sept 7, 2004.

Angelina Jolie Naked (was Re: My Impressions...)If you want to see Angelina Jolie naked, there's some skin in Gia . Judging from it, Angelina has benefitted from "foundation garments" and body doubling in later roles.
I also have to think that anyone who has dated a batshit crazy woman (ah, the good old days... when I could look beyond a woman's crumbling psyche and see the great rack inside), sees the downside in Angelina. Basically, I might want to do someone who looks like Angelina, but even just a night with that psycho might be more work than it's worth.

personally
I'm looking forward to seeing this movie, but I'll admit I'm starting to have CGI-fatigue.
CGI should be a tool to enhance a good, original story.
I rarely see original plots anymore being made into movies.
One notable exception though, is the recently made Oldboy, a Korean movie.
If you intend to see this work of genius, avoid spoilers at all costs. -
check this out
... if you like the look of this movie also look at Sin City, directed by RR (Desperado, Spy Kids fame). It is also filmed all against a green screen like Sky Captain. Initial screenings have people drooling. Sky Captain looks good, but I think Sin City will own all when it comes to the style... go RR!

Re:Forfeiture
I really don't want the SS breaking down my door and seizing all the computers (and then I have to sue the state and wait a few years to get my stuff back maybe) because some clerk at HQ typed in the wrong address.
Perhaps your reading comprehension is not up to par. If "some clerk at HQ typed in the wrong address" so the SS bust down my door, why does that mean that I was "sending viagra spams, nigerian investment emails, or phishing scams"? cf. Tuttle vs. Buttle.if you were sending viagra spams, nigerian investment emails, or phishing scams, then you certainly deserve the SS breaking down your door and seizing your computers. and don't expect them back, ever.
I hope you've heard of the grandmother who had her property seized even though all charges were dismissed.
Co-counsel Shawn Newman explained, "We have a Kafkaesque situation in which the government can take your property without a conviction. The government and their paid informants are like bounty hunters who share a percentage of the proceeds." In this case after three years of enormous effort and expense McGavick and Newman were able to win back her property and a $100,000 judgment for damages. Her loss of business, damage to her reputation and emotional distress were not recovered with that award, but it was better than her client received. He was offered a choice: plead guilty to drug sales and receive a 9 month sentence and you may keep half of the value of your $800,000 property when the county sells it, or, you can fight the drug charge in criminal court and you may win, but in that case all of your property will be forfeited.
Ah, to think that a just a couple of decades ago, it was the Soviets we accused of suppressing dissent, requiring papers for domestic travel, guilty until proven innocent, and the state seizing private property "just because". -

i'm reminded of "catch me if you can"
catch me if you can was a movie with tom hanks and leonardo di caprio that embellished mightily on the real life tale of a check forger and the fbi agent who pursued him.
what is true about the story though is that the check forger in question went on to become one of the fbi's most valuable anti-forgery experts and he eventually went on to make millions helping banks design anti-forgery checks. here is the man's website.
so whenever i see someone like this sasser/ netsky author get caught, or another virus or worm author in the news, i can't help but think: why doesn't microsoft just hire the guy?
seriously, a brilliant criminal is just someone who's skills are being expressed in the right forum, but in the wrong direction. all law enforcement has to do is flip the brilliant criminal into an asset as a condition of a smaller criminal sentence/ fine for them. eventually, they may find real respect and success in their field of expertise on the white hat side of things.
and this isn't fiction i'm inventing, this is exactly what happened with frank abagnale jr. (of catch me if you can fame above).
well, for all i know, this IS what microsoft is doing... anyone have any news anecdotes to indicate this? anyone know whatever happened to the melissa virus author or the i love you virus author that they caught years ago? -

remake mix mistakes
I for one will be happy with the new version of the shootout if george will only go back and fix the mix in "empire strikes back"
for those of you who might not have noticed, in the re-release on VHS, all of Han Solo's sarcastic one off remarks in the asteroid field have been mixed out. these few quick remarks were some of the biggest things that humanized that character.
among all the changes made in the original trilogy, this was the biggest mistake. as far as the others go I was thrilled to see the alteration of the ending of Jedi, which I generally considered the weakest of the three. (not actually for the ewoks mind you, but the overdoing of the "sensitive moments.")
side note, has anyone else ever noticed that the cinematographer from empire also has the rocky horror on his resume?http://imdb.com/name/nm0005893/ -

Re:I can see how why the USA sucks for Moore
I'd like to clear things up for you since apparently you think that Disney never intended to release Fahrenheit 9/11.
Disney/Miramax produced F911 and had the distribution rights to the movie. They fully planned to distribute it. Michael Eisner (CEO of Disney) decided not to allow Miramax to distribute the movie. So, the two brothers that head up Miramax bought distribution rights to F911 from Miramax and formed a company (Fellowship Adventure Group) to distribute it.
Eisner's reasons are his own, but it is easy to see they were probably political. F911 fit in with the Miramax brand (as I explained in my previous post) and has made over $112 million dollars at the box office as of September 5. There was no business reason not to distribute it. -

It would have been released under their Miramax brand which Fahrenheit 9/11 completely fits in with. Miramax also released Pulp Fiction.
