Only the beginning
While it is important to recognize the Liberal Myth of the "Moon", it is even more important to pay attention to the stupendous fabrication of the so called "Earth". The notion that a collection of rocks and water could float willy-nilly through space around a so-called "Sun", somehow holding people onto it's surface, and keeping an atmosphere around it in just enough quantity that we all didn't suffocate is asinine. Those of us who recognize and accept our place here on the Ark find comfort in it's explicit limits.

Re:From Earth to the Moon
Also, it exists on DVD and VHS tape (ew). I am borrowing it from my boss at work. I was impressed by its ratings and reviews.
:)
I hope to start watching the miniseries this weekend. I didn't know it was 35th anniversary until I read /. story. Nice timing for me. ;) -
The review is spoiler free, but...I appreciate that tyleremerson took the time to write a review, but honestly, after reading it, I feel I know exactly as much about the movie as before, just be seeing the preview in the movies. It was nice to get some trivia about the actors, but I barely saw any information in the write-up that I would expect from a review.
There are great reviews (and user comments on) IMDB - granted, they're not always spoiler-free, but extemely informative.

Re:Changed the view of the US?
Actually, I work with a former Soviet citizen, and both of us grew up during the "Cold War". She said that they did not share our fear of nuclear war. Their press and media did not share the same attitude that we had where "At any minute, one of those crazy Commie Russians is gonna push the button and poof the world will be over".
I grew up with this fear. Movies like Red Dawn and The Day After scared the shit out of me.
Back then the Olympics were almost like a war. It was us against them. The highlight was the 1980 US/USSR hockey match for the gold medal.
Then, one day, poof... No more USSR.
Now the government has invented a better enemy. One without borders. One without a clear identity. Gasp, Terrorists.
Now we have a war on terrrorism. WTF? As if there is anything that anyone can do to prevent a bombing. How difficult is it to simply walk across the US/Mexico border or even easier the US/Canada border? -

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's not like the guy had a movie named after him or anything.

Canadian Bacon
Michael Moore's Canadian Bacon provides a hilarious contrast between U.S. and Canadian cliches. Starring Alan Alda and John Candy.

Mod parent up. Supernerds with no concept of sports at all aside from them pre-empting Futurama (I know - that was me a few years ago) tend to not know about the mental aspect of sports at all. Math-oriented people interested in learning about the more intellectual aspects of sports are highly encouraged to read Moneyball, which documents a bunch of guys' efforts to disect baseball into more useful set of statistics. You might also wanna read up on such Football coaches as Belichick, Madden and Ditka, or rent the film Miracle. (I gained a strong appreciation for sports from my ex-roommate, who was pretty much a walking sports encyclopedia, and yet had a 3.59 cum GPA majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Electrical Engineering).

Great Movie
I had to post something because growing up, Searching for Bobby Fischer was one of my favorite movies. I pretty much lost interest in him, along with everyone else but the feds, when he disappeared, but if nothing else maybe they can make another good movie. If you've never seen it before I recommend 'obtain a copy' for viewing, using your desired methods.

Somewhat OT: Hatley High
I just couldn't help myself but think of the movie Hatley High when I saw this newsitem. I thought it was a great movie about chess and would like to reccommend it to all
:).

Hmm...
So before this, they were indeed Searching for Bobby Fischer ?
(Sorry, it had to be done) -
This is a very old idee, circa 1958
In this movie the idea is originated. Can't you tell a B-movie when you see it? No? This movie should be a little bit closer. Aliens, flatworms, nanorobots, it is all the same.

GNAA Announces Project to Port Slashcode to ASPNETGNAA Announces Project to Port Slashcode to ASP.NET
Fremont, California - In a surprise announcement, GNAA has announced a truce and alliance with the popular news for trolls website Slashdot.
GNAA member godspeed broke the news at an early-evening press conference, announcing that GNAA would cease trolling the website, and will instead work with the current Slashdot staff on porting the Slashcode to ASP.NET, to be run under IIS.
"We've had our difference with Slashdot in the past," godspeed began, "but with recent slowdowns in performance on the website, they have finally realized that Opensource is indeed dead, and it's time to move on and replace their antiquated codebase with something that will meet the modern day's needs. We're pleased to be given the opportunity to work with the Slashdot staff on making this port. Of course, the new code will not be opensourced, an NDA will be signed in blood by all who see it and if you release it, the penalty... well, you've seen what happened to Nick Berg, Paul Johnson, and the others. Major changes to be implemented include the removal of goatse link evasion, major overhauls to the karma system, and the replacement of pinkpages with LastMeasure,"
At this point godspeed turned the podium over to fellow GNAA member goat-see and stormed out of the room. goat-see offered to take any questions the audiencemembers have. When asked why there were no Slashdot representatives at the conference, he was quick to reply "You can speak to CowboyNeal outside after we're through here, we couldn't get that motherfucker in here without widening the doorframes. Next question?," eliciting a hearty chuckle from the audience. When asked the reason for the sudden change in relations with Slashdot, goat-see paused to think for a moment, before answering "Our historical differences were meant to hilight the flaws in the Slashdot system. As soon as the staff realized what an impacted shitpile their site was and the need to update it, we were the first to volunteer to assist in the migration. We look forward to seeing the hight performace of ASP.NET pages with a MS SQL backend as much as any other nigger out there."
bare, a GNAA member sitting in the audience, stood up and confirmed this announcement with a hearty "LOL." goat-see concluded the conference at that point, saying "If you have any further questions, please direct them to new GNAA member Wil Wheaton, now let's all go outside and poke that fat fuck CowboyNeal with sticks."

Jokes around too much for the AirForce ?!?
His character jokes around too much for a Colonel in the Air Force
Bah, I think a bit of eccentricity is a prerequisite for the USAF. Zipping about at the controls of an oversized Buick travelling several multiples of the speed of sound must rattle the brain. Or require a rattled one to begin with. Don't get me wrong, I'm the son of a USAF pilot, I've got nothing against them. But they've got a pretty distinct type of humor. Jack O'Neil seems to portray a good deal of that. (Admittedly, maybe this is the sort of thing that tapers off as one ascends the chain of command ?)
But otherwise, I agree with you wholeheartedly on the WormHoleAtlantis X-Tream fears. I guess only time will tell. Afterall, not every spinoff sucks.

Re:Lately the Times doesn't deserve as much respecInteresting you should mention Jason Blair.
The author of the referenced article, Adam Penenberg, is the one who broke the story on Stephen Glass fabricating stories at the New Republic. At the time, Penenberg was at Forbes.com.
That story is told in the movie "Shattered Glass", which I had the pleasure of watching for the first time the other night.

Re:SG-1 Continuity?
The role of Samantha Carter (played by Amanda Tapping) is a great boost to women. WE NAMED OUR DAUGHTER 'CARTER' AFTER HER (and the president).
I recognize that they give Carter too many responsibilities (being uber-brilliant and super-soldier). My wife commented that they got rid of the Dr. Janet Frasier (played by Teryl Rothery) to make sure the show wasn't too heavy with women in top positions, that would be threatening.
I doubt my wife is correct, but she makes a good point. Are they going to replace and add characters to regain the male / female balance on this show?
One of the PREMIER COOL things that shows like Stargate do, IMHO, is allow stodgey males (young and old) to VIEW women soldiers, and thus experience them as highly capable, rough-and-tumble, smart, and fallible human beings.
Just seeing a woman in a role allows you to change your preconceptions of what roles people should be in. That goes for having a handicapped person (amputee, maybe) working in the SGC as a technician. The part would be small, in the background, but it would make a big difference in how people saw people with physical limitations.
The original Star Trek put a black woman in a senior leadership position (Lieuntenant Uhura, communications officer, okay, it isn't a huge department, but it's important, and it's on the bridge). That redefined what was possible for black women both on TV and off.
I hope Stargate continues to push boundaries and explore what we perceive as normal.
Of course, they could just ignite a firestorm and introduce a Gua'ould named Jesus. Or another namd 'Moshe' (Moses). Or another named, 'Siddhartha'. Or 'Mohammed'. I would recommend they stay out of that territory, though, there'd be LOTS of pushback from their fanbase and zealots alike.

Re:How relevant are Apple now?
People who perceive that Dell does nothing in terms of R&D are naiive[sic].
If you search the US Patent and Trademark Office database for patents with an assignee name of "Dell Products", you get 222 patents. A search for just "Dell" yields 1089 patents, at least one of which is for "Dell U.S.A." rather than "Dell Products" but is still Dell (Round Rock, Texas, and a patent on "Apparatus and method for a combination personal digital assistant and network portable device"). Searching for "Dell Computer" or "Dell Products" or "Dell USA" or "Dell U.S.A"[sic] in the "Advanced Search" page (that's an/(dell andnot ("dell computer" or "dell products" or "dell usa" or "dell u.s.a")) - there's no "not" operator, as far as I can tell, but there is "andnot", and if you try to search for "dell u.s.a." it "helpfully" removes the final ".")) found 61 patents, some of which are, alas, for "Dell U.S.A.". About 11 of those appear to be computer-related, so I'll be lazy and assume they're for some other part of Dell, leaving 50 non-Dell patents, for a grand total of 1039 Dell Computer patents.
Some of them are mechanical and electrical patents (for the parts of their equipment that don't come out of the box from Intel or Microsoft or {fill in a BIOS vendor} or {fill in your favorite Linux distribution vendor}, some are manufacturing patents (for example, 6,714,937, "System and method for virtual setup and configuration for a build-to-order computer") - i.e., the sort of stuff that their component makers wouldn't necessarily do.
A search for patents with "Apple" in the assignee name found 1813 patents, but at least one of them (6,723,044, "Abdominal retractor") isn't assigned to Apple Computer (it's Apple Medical Corporation, Marlboro, MA, USA). If you search for "Apple Computer", you get 1777 patents; if you search for "Apple" and not "Apple Computer" in the "Advanced Search" section you get 36 patents, at least one of which has Apple as one of the assignees (5,996,057, "Data processing system and method of permutation with replication within a vector register file", which is a PowerPC patent with the other two assignees being the obvious, i.e. IBM and Motorola). About 5 of those look as if they'd be Apple Computer patents, so make that a grand total of 1782 Apple Computer (or Apple+IBM+Motorola) patents.
Of course, Apple's been around longer than Dell, so let's restrict the search to, say, patents issued in 2002, 2003, or 2004, by adding "and ISD/1/1/2002->12/31/2004". Unfortunately, doing so causes the patent search engine to take Too Damn Long to search (Safari times out the request), so let's just look for patents assigned to something with "Apple" in its name in that range - oops, that times out, too. Sigh.
OK, let's try 2004 patents, with an/"apple computer" and ISD/$/$/2004 - 70 patents. an/dell and ISD/$/$/2004 yields 78 patents, most of which look Dell Computerish.
I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader to decide whether the number of "major" patents from Apple or Dell is higher - patents can range anywhere from a patent for a new I/O bus to a patent for a minor tweak on a hinge.
And, in the "offtopic but interesting" department, note that one of the examples on the Advanced Search page is "in/newmar-julie". I was curious whether Julie Newmar actually had any patents - yup, two: 4,003,094, "Pantyhose with shaping band for cheeky derrier[sic] relief" and 3,935,864, "Brassiere". I suspect there might be a fan of the old Batman TV show hiding somewhere in the US Patent and Trademark Office's IT department.... (And, yes, I know about Hedy Lamarr and spread-spectrum communications. Unfortunately, patent 2,292,387 was issued in 1942 and is only available in scanned form.)

Re:Open Source
But if you do production in an open shop state, or set up your production company from the beginning to be union-free, why worry about union rules?
IMHO this is one thing that is killing Hollywood as a cinema production center. Labor unions and guilds do have their place, and companies that abuse their workers do deserve the unions they get. Still, if you are offering professional wages for professional work, union rules really don't matter and you can produce whatever you wanted to make.
What caused the problems here was the heavy consolidation of movie production into a very small handful of companies, so it forced the creation of labor unions to combat the management pressures put on the ordinary film production crew members. "A" list movie actors were never an issue here, nor were top script writers. The next tier down, however, did start to suffer due to studio pressure to lower wages, and it got worse for those trying to break into the industry.
The "awsome" thing about open-source scripts and even film scenes is that you can add to the "body" of what has been produced, and start this with a relatively small budget... just a couple of kids struggling with a camcorder and a digital editing system in their basement. The most famous example of what can be produced in a manner like this is THX-1138 a film produced by George Lucas (aka Star Wars) when he was a student at the USC film school. Of course Blair Witch Project can also be compared this way, but it really was produced by some slightly more experienced folks... just for a cheap budget.
I've seen plenty of fan flicks, some of fairly decent quality. Why not extend this idea some more? -
Re:Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic
Phil LaMarr isn't exactly a "well known hollywood actor", but he is an INCREDIBLY talented voice actor. It's hard to believe Hermes Conrad and Samurai Jack are voiced by the same person.

Well,
In the earlier game, Doom 2, the subtitle was Hell On Earth. Being on Earth and thus susceptible to its changing climate one could assume that it is feasible for Hell to freeze over. As for teaching pigs to fly I dunno, BFG maybe?
But then again, it is Hell - an evil place where sanity and rationality are unknown - so maybe there you are taught to fly and there are frozen pigs running around.
Or maybe I'm just talking bullshit. -

:) Unite all my fellow Aikidoka and bring back the Samurai, but with the modern outlook on life. Basically have a system (more like classes) of peasants (commercial farmers), samurai (the law) and doctors, scientists, physicists and engineers and maybe a class of entertainers. Basically get rid of all those "parasite professions". Then we can get closer to the technological utopia of StarTrek :)The biggest problem with cannibalism, is that you spread certain diseases more easily. Things like Mad Cow Disease, is an example, bus just similar things applied to humans. If there is this Extinction Level Event (ELE) then we need to ensure the gene-pool survive, I mean make use of it, to get rid of AIDS. But then we are back at the level where the NAZI's where and that is a loss in humanity no matter how you look at it.
Arguably the strongest will survive, but the sum-of-the-parts will be lower then the whole. The people we need to survive is not necessarily the "strong". Nerds and geeks is what we need, basically a lot of engineers (yup, I am an Engineer), and then physical labor to build things quick or sacrifice themselves for the greater good, like the firemen of Chernobyl. Have you ever considered what will happen once there are no people to look after Nuclear Power plants, I would imagine in a countries like the USA these plants are geographically so densely distributed that if one fails the fall-out will trigger evacuations and thus failures of the others in close proximity, ultimately leaving you with a cascading domino-effect.
The people that you will need to solve this type of problem is not really the "strong". I would imagine, the "red-necks" will probably have the highest change of survival but then humanity will be gone, and we will be back in the dark ages.
I would imagine either things turnout or at least start to happen as it did in the movies, Deep Impact (FEMA) and possibly a messed up society as in Twelve Monkeys or even Mad Max.
As an engineer my biggest problem, would be to effectively restart our technology level in preferably less then 10 years. Else we might loose it altogether. Knowledge transfer would be important, else we might have a society like The Postman or the TV series, Jerimaia. The problem with most of today's technology is that the components are extremely specialized, you need high-tech to replicate them, and most parts are incremental improvements on a previous version. For example, you need a C compiler, to compile the new-improved C compiler. Some technologies are extremely recursive in this manner. So to the point that if a crucial part is lost, it might be lost forever. Basically how many technologies, can you start from ground principles ?
Things like a surface mount sintered Tantalum Cap, or a microprocessor, or even a DVD reader, to learn new generations about reading, math, etc. Can you restore your backups ? Maybe without the magnetic mantle we might have a huge EM pulse that messes up all magnetically stored data. If the step-function input is too big, we might be back in the dark ages.
Ok one part of me feel like, yeah !!! But it is the transients before we get there that scares me.

My preferences
I was first introduced (or so I thought) to the impressive talent of Michael Bell in the Soul Reaver series as Raziel. The story, but most especially the voice acting, really elevated the game's quality to a higher standard.
It was only after reading the man's filmography that I understood what a powerhouse of animation and game acting he was. It includes game roles in everything from I-Ninja to Warcraft 3, and my jaw hit the floor when I read some of the animation credits from my childhood that he claims (Transformers, G.I. Joe, He-Man). This guy has been doing this (and well) for a very long time!
(The other actors for the Soul Reaver series should not be forgotten either, including Simon Templeman, Rene Auberjonois of ST:DS9, and another fav of mine: Tony Jay as the Elder God)

(The other actors for the Soul Reaver series should not be forgotten either, including Simon Templeman, Rene Auberjonois of ST:DS9, and another fav of mine: Tony Jay as the Elder God)

Re:progressIt's a reference to a cult japanese film.
:)The basic plot is this... students have rebelled against the government and "adults", so the govt invoked the battle royale act. Each year, one class of year 9 school students is shipped to a remote island and told that they have to kill each other off. They're all 'tagged' with exploding necklaces that also function as tracking devices for those monitoring the "game". If any more than a single student remains alive after the final (third) day, all the necklaces explode...
It comes down to whether you could kill your own friends...

Re:Best Voice recentlyWarner did a really great job as Irenicus in BG2, I heartily agree; the director deserves some props as well, considering how well the spoken dialogue flows from scene to scene seamlessly with intonation, tone and all that jazz. From the manual, I'd have to guess that would be Chris Borders.

GNAA new celebrity memberGNAA ANNOUNCES NEW CELEBRITY MEMBER
Altise - GNAA, Nigeria.
Arf Arf. International rap sensation Earl 'DMX' Simmons has announce that he swings his gat on the other side of the hood. Our journalists tried to contact the star, whose first four albums debuted at the top of the charts, to find out what his family thought.
"My wife is obviously devastated that the whole marriage was a sham. As expected, she wants a divorce and custody of the kids, who don't know yet. The truth is I didn't do as many shows as she was led to believe. I am gay and I am now proud after finding out about an organization like the GNAA which has shown me that's there are many black men just like myself who are gay. It don't make a matter in my music and my movies. Truth is, I've been gay for nineteen years. If haters wanna fight me, they can fight these tears. I'm tired of weak ass niggas who can't deal. It's a fact of life and X is still X and will always be X. I'm glad to be on board with the GNAA."
The GNAA welcomes the hip hop sensation and creator of hit tracks such as "X Gon Giv It 2 Ya" and "Where da hood at?" with open arms. A celebrity of this magnitude should provide some great publicity for the GNAA and get their name out even more.
Gay/Straight by DMX
