We had a TERRIBLE time with the Sasser worm at work today. When I went home afterward I decided to run the Windows Updates (that I almost never do) to patch my game machine at home. My XP-Pro machine on a cable-modem was running clean (I've been playing City of Heroes since Saturday) before the Windows Updates. Ran the patches. Rebooted. Hangs on reboot. Hangs on reboot again. Hangs on a third reboot. After an hour of percussion therapy I booted into Safe Mode w/ Networking and updated a newer Video driver. Rebooted. Works fine now. It's amazing to me that Microsoft's own updates can render a machine unbootable (to a desktop).

I'm wondering if there's any way people (the world?) could begin a Class-Action Lawsuit against Microsoft for lost time, mental anguish, etc. due to their crappy software! Everytime this stuff happens I'm reminded of the Bill Gates cameo in the South Park movie. The memory of that scene never fails to make me smile!

One aspect of Postal 2 that I haven't seen in other crime-centric games is the ability to forcibly enter a suburban home. That, itself, is a step beyond the acts of personal violation we've seen in other titles. GTA-3 allows you to eject an adult from his car and take it for your own. I feel relatively safe when I'm in my car; and I'd feel relatively well-violated if someone snatched me from it. But I imagine that's nothing compared to being abducted (or otherwise intruded upon) in the sanctity of my own home. (Violation of person would be an even more extreme example.)

Postal 2's creators believe there's an appeal in the act of violating another human being. A Clockwork Orange shows us a group of people who enjoy this; their behavior is perfectly believable. The 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment shows us that the capacity for cruelty and abuse of control can exist in all of us. Games like Thief (audio/flash) distance us from this by changing the setting somewhat. In breaking into those medieval homes, there exists the sense of being somewhere I shouldn't, but I never really felt like I was terrifying anyone. Knowing what we do about human nature, would the Thief series sell even better if the victims were people from our own experience?

The consensus here seems to be that Running With Scissors will not gain much by porting the title to Linux. Would an improvement to gameplay make a title centering on home-invasion more interesting?

The question simply is, when are we going to wake up?

Some of the voice actors on the Simpsons have done pretty well as screen actors, the most prominent being Hank Azaria. If you look at the Simpson's IMDB page you can see that most of the others have done a lot of significant voice work on unrelated, but successful stuff.

Not that I don't think the actors are entitled to a bigger share of such a successful show. Voice work of a particular person is never the same when imitated by someone else. I know I really miss Jim Henson. Kermit and the others have never sounded the same.

The Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker comedy Top Secret! did a life-size Pac-Man gag in 1984 (in addition to parodying Elvis movies, spy movies, war movies, and The Blue Lagoon).
When Nick Rivers (Val Kilmer) arrives in East Germany, a map of the area around the train station is shown on the screen. The train chugs in, with a dotted line showing where our hero is, just like in the travel scenes in the Indiana Jones movies. We hear sound effects to let us know what's going on as Nick leaves in a car, with the dotted line following his position. A bunch of other vehicles fill up all the streets on the map with similar dots, and then our round yellow friend appears and starts eating the dots.

They did this in Broken Lizard's Club Dread (same group that made Supertroopers) -- it was easily the best part of the movie.

Seeing the movie without reading the book is more akin to saying you read Starship Troopers when in fact you've only seen the movie.

Initial analysis seems to indicate classic Blaster-style worm behaviour.

This made me think of a quote from "Broken Arrow", when Giles Prentice (Frank Whaley) is told there is a "broken arrow", he says,
"I don't know what's scarier - losing nuclear weapons or that it happens so often that we have a name for it."

Globalisation is not going away. Outsourcing is not going away. IT jobs in the US are going away.

Go see Grapes of Wrath, and get a good understanding of what real hardship is like. Nasty fact of life: Things change. And no amount of political posturing, wishing, whining, begging, or threatening is going to change that.

If you really want to be a coder - that is - if you chose IT because you genuinely love it (I do), then emigrate.

You cannot change the attractiveness of outsourcing through fiat. However you can change your situation until you are more attractive than Ravi's House of Outsourcing and Tandoori[1] and you will not have trouble finding work.

Just as the dot-com bubble was collapsing, I took my meager savings and moved to a place where the cost of living is low, but infrastructure is well developed. There were surely tradeoffs - learning a new (human) language is substantially more difficult than learning a new programming language, but to be frank, that was a big part of the adventure: Throw myself into a foreign culture and see how well I could adapt.

Now, I have a comfortable, but not lavish lifestyle - two junior programmers and one artist working on projects I manage (who make about 150% of what local companies pay for the same work) - and without hesitation I can say: I have a much better quality of life than I ever had working in the dot-bomb universe. And with personal freedom increasingly a joke in my homeland, I have a strong feeling I will never repatriate.

If you chose IT because you thought it would lead to riches and a comfortable lifestyle: Well - you should have paid more attention to your carreer counselor in high school. It is not too late to learn to be a plumber, or a car mechanic.

(GNN) GNAA, Nigeria - The Gay Nigger Association of America today released its findings from a recent study in numerical and alphabetical gender. Spokesperson Lysol confirmed what most people were already speculating--the number 12 is gay.

The thirteen month study included participants from many planets and countries inhabited by gay niggers, and included the numbers 0-30 and all the letters of the english alphabet. Certain discrepencies included the perceived gender of the letter W and the letter T. Some felt W to be wholly female and thus repugnant, but others felt T was more of a transvestite or effeminate male letter. Others still muddled the presumptions by finding certain letters to have no gender at all.

However, it was unanimously found that the number 12 was homosexual. Not a single participant of the fourteen million interviewed found the number twelve to be anything but wholly queer by design. Next month, a new study conducted by the GNAA will attempt to discover the true colors of letters and numbers, in a similar fashion to this study. It will then be settled once and for all: Is 12 black and thus the true number of the Gay Nigger?

1. Don't bother communicating to people who aren't willing to devote at least a solid hour to listening before they know anything else about you.

So the ACLU was suing to protect Americans' privacy from the government prying into ISP customer data. But no one knew about it, since there's another law that prevents the ACLU from telling the public. So they're basically fighting for our freedoms in secret?

It reminds me of that light from the classic show, "The Prisoner": "Why don't you just lock us all up and be done with it?"

I call upon the self-proclaimed conservatives who never tire of claiming they're against "big government". Stop for a minute punctuating every sentence with "terrorism," and "support the troops; we're at war!" like some sort of right-wing Speak and Spell. Remember this on election day: Bush believes the PATRIOT Act should be renewed and celebrated. There's your big government, pal.

More than anything else, it's the atmosphere. IMO, the Max Payne games are the only solid examples of noir storytelling in videogame form.
As for what exactly is noir: "Dead giveaways of this genre are: narration in the first person, the loneliness of the hero (or more rarely, heroine) with no hope of redemption; a stubborn adherence to a code of honor in the face of depravity and evil (although noir is never condescendingly preachy); deadpan one-liners and morbid/stoic philosophy, usually delivered in a terse manner after violence or betrayal.[..]Noir has in recent years been succesfully blended with other genres and media, such as anime, fantasy, science fiction and computer games (e.g. Blade Runner, the Max Payne games and The Dresden Files). Also called hardboiled detective fiction." (from a copy of my post to another forum).
Noir is exemplified in the writings of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. It's a hard to define, and demanding genre, with literary fans. See also here for more definitions and related resources.

You sir should go ahead and go to your local blockbuster (or Kazaa) and rent (download) Gattaca. Human life is not something to be taken lightly, no matter how "unequipped".

Fascinating that this movie should become so topical again.
