The Star Trek remakes got away with it because the roles made the actors more than the actors made the roles (though they're still boring movies).

But Han Solo was cool because Harrison Ford is a top-end actor who absolutely nailed the character of Han Solo. A Han Solo movie without Harrison Ford is basically a movie of going "Boy, that character isn't nearly as interesting as I remember. And that guy still isn't Harrison Ford!"

The genre doesn't deserve such a fine provenance, but I think it was from the Japanese film that spawned the competition portion of The Hunger Games.

Because it wasn't a Star wars movie. It was a deconstruction of a Star Wars movie, set in something like the Star Wars universe, but much smaller, re-casting the conflict not as a grand galactic civil war, but more as a Montague vs. Capulet feud (which.. they probably should've cribbed some music from for the score...) Some of the plot points were seemingly added specifically to turn off long-time fans, and plot threads were abruptly cut off rather than satisfyingly explored or simply left for the next film.

They even explained what they were doing in the movie

let the past die. Kill it, if you have to.

As a movie, I thought it had a mediocre plot (they just had too much time to fill for basically 33 from the battlestar galactica), with exceptional scenery, props, and costumes. A lot of really good work was done by basically everyone but the director and writes. It wasn't terrible from a film standpoint, if it were made on its own by a competing company as a farce, but It was basically a giant troll of star wars fans.

But entertain me on this thought experiment. Why is having a police force use such a system so different from if they had on their payroll someone who was really really good at remembering faces? Or someone who knew everyone in town?

Okay I will try my best. I Just recently I warthed the documentary about automated surveillance systems sold to and used by the police both in the US and here in Europe called Pre-crime after the concept from Minority Report. The doc itself was alright, not the best, I would have liked more details and practical examples but it gives some insights into the kinds of systems currently in use and in development. Essentially these kinds of systems can be divided into 2 main categories:

1) The kinds that use open and public data about crimes and do not involve personal factors like face-recognition. These systems are meant to help the police to figure out which areas should be patrolled in more, and where the crime is currently clustering.
2) The kinds using both private and public information. These take personal information from different sources, including but not limited to social networks, financial systems and for example state services like social security, past arrests etc and 'score' individuals to try to give a number to them indicating how likely it is that said individual will either perpetrate or be the victim of a crime. Such systems are currently in use at least in Chicago, parts of the UK and parts of China.

Okay so, take your example and assume you have an officer on duty with supreme photographic memory that's capable of remembering a lot of faces. He sees someone on the street that he thinks is a fugitive or a suspect and they pursue him. If something goes wrong and the guy's injured or killed and turns out to be a different individual, the cop can be held accountable legally. However what's happening with these type 2 systems and what the documentary describes is that it takes and unknown number of variables, and then uses an unknown algorithm to come up with a score that's supposed to tell the officers who is a danger or who might be in danger. In the doc they mention one of the guys who's in the 'heat list' of around 400 individuals in Chicago that has a 'high threat score', not because of his own past criminal history but because of who some of his friends are. Now, with such a system if you happen to end up on such a list there really is no way currently to get of it. This means whenever these guys are walking out in public if the police pull up information on them from the system they're far more likely to be stopped.

Now imagine someone like him, who doesn't have an extensive criminal history but is on the list due to his personal connections gets into an interaction with the police. Do you think the cops will treat such a guy in the same way as they would any other normal individual? Even if the guy's doing nothing wrong a the moment, the system is there to remind them that this is a 'high risk' target. Do you think that increases or decreases the chances that officers will resort to use of force because their algorithm is telling them this guy might be dangerous?

That's the problem core of the problem. It's not the same as some guy seeing a face he remembers from a past case on the street or knows to be a gang-member. These estimations seem objective, but the fact is we're still dealing with probabilities at best. What the scores generated by such systems are telling you is that there's an N percent change according to them that this guy might at some point commit a crime. But there's essentially no way of telling whether those probabilities are accurate for a given individual, yet the police trust the score gioven by the system. One example mentioned in the doc was that a woman had been tweeting about a card game by the name of 'Rage' often, which the system interpreted as a sign of aggressive behaviour which raises her score. Well that made my morning! Somehow, your line reminded me of the movie "The Bothersome Man".

The scene were he's digging in the basement.

The original was in Cinerama.

They're not mutually exclusive: Wikipedia says:

The less wide but still spectacular Super Panavision 70 was used to film the Cinerama presentations [...] 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), which also featured scenes shot in Todd-AO and MCS-70 [...]

IMDb also lists the negative format as "65 mm (Eastman 50T 5251)".

Since the film was shot and mastered in 70 mm, it seems reasonable enough to restore it to 70 mm. Unlike 3-screen Cinerama, there are actually still theaters that can project 70 mm analog.

I might give it a pass in my local 70 mm theater though... some years ago they replaced their screen, adding a silver coating to reflect more light for digital stereoscopic 3D projection, but ever since, analog projection has suffered from noticeable "hot spotting" (not a problem with digital projection for some reason). Fortunately, unlike Nolan, I have no problems with digital projection. :-)

How does this align with the story presented in "The Big Short"? My recollection of the movie (which I highly recommend) is that GS lose big time.

Why not Carousel?

It's hard for me to imagine how an algorithm could really do a good job of "picking the next big blockbuster". On paper, the Justice League movie looks like it ought to be about as good as the latest Avengers movie, yet the Avengers movie is way better (compare IMDB ratings histograms: Justice League Infinity War). Zack Snyder's movies have made a lot of money. Joss Whedon has been associated with very successful movies like the first two Avengers movies. The actors have made very successful movies. The Internet buzz was huge for Wonder Woman. (And the Internet buzz for Ben Affleck was mostly that he was going to suck as Batman before he made Batman v. Superman, and very favorable afterward.) I can't think of any simple inputs one could feed into a model that would have predicted how poorly Justice League did overall.

The Wonder Woman movie did very well, and so did the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and so did the first Deadpool movie. All three were surprises: I didn't see any predictions ahead of any of them "this is going to be huge." I'm going to claim that what all three had in common is "heart". And it's hard to quantify heart.

Another possible ingredient of a blockbuster: show people something they haven't seen before, that they want to see. Before Deadpool, nobody knew that they wanted to see an R-rated Marvel movie with a character who breaks the fourth wall. Before the Guardians movies, who would have predicted that "I Am Groot" would be so popular or that Chris Pratt would become a really huge star? Supposedly Henry Ford said "If I had asked my customers what they wanted, they would have said 'a faster horse.'" You can't guarantee you will give the people what they want by giving them what they used to want, or even what they say they want.

It's easy for an algorithm to pick something that nobody has seen before, but it's hard to guarantee that anyone will want to see it. I don't think it's really possible to quantify that for the algorithm.

Another example that comes to mind is Grosse Point Blank, which did very well when it came out. Or Napoleon Dynamite which just came totally out of nowhere.

It's my personal bias showing, perhaps, but I think the only meta rule covering all the above successes: people put heart into making those movies, and didn't have clueless studio execs stirring the pot and forcing changes that make the movie more like other movies.

I am hoping that the costs of making a movie will continue to come down, and in the future, studio executives will give more of a free hand to the people making a movie. The more a movie costs, the more the studio fears risk, but a true blockbuster can't play things completely safe or it risks being bland.

Note, heart alone doesn't guarantee success. There are plenty of movies that are now beloved that were flops when they first came out. There is a timing element. Also, some people just aren't good at making movies; they may put their whole heart and soul into a movie and the movie could still suck.

2. Rotten Tomatoes measures how popular something is. Using it as a exclusively as "proof" of measurement of "quality" is shows you don't understand point #1 nor #2.

Now there is (some) overlap between a movie that is popular AND good, but there are at least 4 permutations you seem to be ignoring:

High / Crap -- i.e. Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Spy Kids, Jurassic World, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Prometheus, etc.

Low / Crap -- i.e. Battlefield Earth, far too much crap to list.

High = high popular score on Rotten Tomatoes
Low = low popular score on Rotten Tomatoes
Good = Great characters, plot, world building, story telling, or funny / satire / parody.
Crap = Who the fuck wrote/directed this shit???

We can ignore the High/Good (both > 90%) and Low/Crap (both < 40%) since in those cases it can generally be agreed upon that RT's score of popularity DOES equal quality. It is the two OTHER ones High/Crap, and Low/Good that demonstrate RT's score is based on popularity, not quality:

* High/Crap = movie might be over-rated
* Low/Good = movie might be under-rated

(*) I thought Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls was funny as hell, but only a deluded fan would think it was "good" -- how should it be rated then??? Good from an Entertainment value? Crap from a Story perspective?

Beside, IMDB's Top 100 is a better correlation of good movies then RT. But again, this is still mostly a list of popular movies.

Even "better" is a combined RT and IMDb -- but even that must be taken with a grain of salt.

3. There is a HUGE disconnect between the RT's "Critics" and "Audience" score.

More crap like this can be seen with SW:TLJ, critics rate it 91%, yet the audience score is closer to 24% (**) -- ignoring the animated Clone Wars (2008), it is the LOWEST Star Wars film to date.

(**) RT currently shows the audience score as 47%, but this leads me to my next point.

The problem is people like you conflate "popular" == good, or RT "high score" == good, when that simply isn't the case.

On IMDb, the review rated "most helpful" is 6/10 and titled How could anyone who's seen more than 4 movies in their life find this creative? The next most helpful review is called "Visually stunning, but ultimately unimaginative" and the one after that is "People are weak minded." The next review, an inexplicable 8/10 given what I'm about to paste, even says in the middle that "What it was lacking that really should have shaped the movie is its character/story. I was expecting a complex and believable plot, but was left with a movie with mostly strong visuals." We can safely assume that "helpfulness" is really just a synonym for "agreement" on IMDb, and the votes say it's pretty "meh" when taken as a whole work. Every review critical of Avatar says it's because it's visually great but shitty when scrutinized as a complete work.

Do you think Disney really wants to put an unknown director in charge of its next movie solely on the merit that "they'll produce a different result?" Hell no, and you'd have to be terribly ignorant of reality to think otherwise. Hollywood is slow to change because change means potential losses and big business hates losses more than anything else.

Besides, literally anyone can make a movie today. The brokest joker in the room can get a $8 lavalier on eBay and use her cell phone to do both the video and record the over-dubbed audio as needed and even cut the whole movie together on the phone if that's all she has available. HitFilm and DaVinci Resolve editors have free versions now. Tutorials are free on YouTube and abundant beyond belief. The barrier to entry for filmmakers is so low that it almost doesn't exist. At some point you have to acknowledge that it's possible that women just aren't interested enough in making movies to pursue a Hollywood career. Plus, in the wake of Weinstein et al, can you really blame them for avoiding that whole mess and doing something that will make good money without all the pain and high risk of unemployment in a high cost-of-living urban area?

Which ones specially (names) were selected partially based on their sex? It should be easy for you to answer because you said "almost all of them".

Before you answer, remember that there was a time when there was a similar discrepancy among published authors. You'd have maybe two women out of 100 published authors. There was a belief that men were just better writers, naturally. Today, there are more women published than men, and the publishing industry is notoriously tough to crack and demands sales above all else. In other words, the marketplace just preferred women authors to men. There is no affirmative action for authors. You have to produce sales or you don't get published. The free market in action.

NK has been saying stuff about deals forever; plenty of informed people realized that they didn't have a nutcase leader and they were going to get a position of power and some form of equality (nukes) so they could negotiate as one of the "big boys."
