Hollywood is out of ideas!
AWWWWW CRAP does that mean we have to endure a remake of this ?

Actually... originally it used to be real fish.

You might remember that from this movie.

Re:self gratification
I went back to college at age 38 after I had gotten divorced. At 42 I am still in college since the pool of available, good looking and non-desperate women is far larger than anywhere else I might go.
Plus you have a common interest/past time (college), you get to see them when they are not fucked up or drunk as hell, and for the best part, your competition is usually a bunch of young bucks who have as much skills in forming relationships of the short and fun type as a monkey does of quantum physics.
4 years, going on 5 and have not dated or had sex with a woman older than 26 since I started back to college. And since there are so many, you can have really high standards and still have plenty to pick from.
Rodney Dangerfield, is that you?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090685/If you're staying in school JUST to sleep with young women, all you've discovered is how to be a dirty old man. It's not new. You're just using college as your personal playboy mansion.
If your relationship is going to move from casual/superficial to something more serious, finding someone your own age and level maturity has a lot of advantages over dating a bunch of mentally unstable experimental college girls who haven't worked out what they want from life. Meanwhile as you get older you'll find less and less 26 year olds willing to date/sleep with you.

Re:should be done at 240 fps
How much did having a fully-CGI character composited with live actors for virtually an entire feature film cost the makers of Paul?
Hint: you're probably thinking an order of magnitude high.

Lars, get a real girl!
BTW, a really good movie. Bianca's just a little shy.

You mean this: Terminator Salvation (T4)?
No, you didn't miss anything... -

Although, that would be impossible since Baywatch the movie hasn't been made yet
sadly you are wrong, it has been made :

Moon
I think the recent film Moon with Sam Rockwell did an interesting take on the topic of mortality as a plot device. I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. It's not blockbuster material, but it's not a cookie-cutter sci-fi film that Hollywood seems to always spit out.
Of course, I watched the movie while I was working abroad for 3 months and only had contact with friends and family with Skype. So my boss took great pleasure in doing quotes from the film.

Re:Buyers Remorse
Ads. Coming soon to your dreams!
Didn't you have ads in the 21st century?"
Well sure, but not in our dreams. Only on TV and radio, and in magazines, and movies, and at ball games... and on buses and milk cartons and t-shirts, and bananas and written on the sky. But not in dreams, no siree.Damn near prescient I would say!

Open Arms?
I know this is
/. and I'm supposed to be outraged; but surely I'm not the only one who thinks of ownership as a burden. With Netflix streaming, I can (cheaply) obtain access to far more movies than I ever care to watch. If one becomes unavailable (Moon, I'm looking at you!) I'll just pick one of the thousands of other movies to watch.Same thing with my kindle. There are more books on Project Gutenberg than I'll ever get through, not to mention cheap/free modern electronically published works, never mind conventional publishers. If I can't read one, I'll move to the next.
A movie collection (even ripped) has storage and maintenance costs (time, money, space, storage for the physical disks, etc.). A book collection even more so - shelving, enough home space to house said shelving, ways to protect the books from my kids. If it becomes valuable enough, you need the added expense of security (plus living where the crime rate is low enough for security to work). Take away enough of the crap "ownership" (it still isn't yours, really) and your life will still be just as enriched as before, but less of your time/capital (and use of time to generate capital) is wrapped up in "stuff". In fact, that sounds like a major component of "wealth".
Welcome to the Rentership Society! The only thing I miss from home ownership is my own plot of land for a garden. Okay, I also wish we had better soundproofing in our walls/floors, but that's due to our budget choices, not rentership in general...

Re:Hummm... What?
And the stories of Snow White, Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and many others were taken (stolen?) by Disney from the public domain.
Disney definitely wants things both ways...it liberally borrowed from the public domain, but doesn't want any of its stuff there.
It is true that Disney licensed Mary Poppins. It is very interesting though that the author of Mary Poppins, PL Travers, was a giant pain in the butt for Disney. According to IMDB, she greatly interfered in the making of the movie. Among other things she wanted major changes to the final film, including removing the chalk drawing animated sequence and removing all the music and replacing with period songs like "Ta Ra Ra Boom De Ay" or "Greensleeves". I would argue that the music is the soul of the movie.
If the argument is that art won't get created without copyright, an equally valid argument is that art isn't getting created due to copyright. -
Re:Last words...http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116996/trivia
The writers weren't sure what the Martians should sound like so the script read "ack, ack, ack, ack" for all of their lines of dialogue. This became the actual words spoken by the Martians in the film.

are humans worth it?
It is surprising that we give a 'worth saving index' to other species but as a species, are humans worth saving if a situation arose? Agent Smith's quote from Matrix stands out in my mind
.. "Agent Smith: I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. In Scotland the problem's so bad that the term 'NED' (Non-educated Delinquent) is actually used in newspaper headlines.

If anyone is reading this, and hasn't seen the 2010 film 'Into Eternity', they should seek it out, and watch it.
The film documents the nuclear waste storage facility under Finland that needs to last 100,000 years.
It seems easier to explain the perils of long term nuclear storage to children than adults. -

oh look, follow the leader
Who would've thought that the public at large would find yet another tool to deify and revere the drug taking *'upper class'. Most people simply cannot be without leader figures it seems. Twitter's a giant pile of shit that the media seem to have glommed onto in some desperate attempt to remain current and hip, and they routinely talk about it and the internet in general in a most basic way. Understanding just how the internet works, and the sort of technology that goes into it should be a requirement before you can use it to be honest. I mean you wouldn't drive a car without knowing how to change the oil right?
... oh, wait.
*They are in fact, not the 'upper class', but simply reflections of the worshippers themselves who got lucky on some stupid reality show about eating someone elses shit.
I suppose no thread about twitter and social networking in general would be complete without a reference to Idiocracy. ... and they thought we'd all sucumb to some brilliant and devilish dictatorship, if only! -

cautious optimism
The important part will be if he formulates a new theory or extends Einstein's theory such that we could make more or more accurate predictions about the universe. His math skills are not the only prerequisite here. Einstein himself said "Imagination is more important than knowledge"
"Professor John Ross, who vows to help find some grant funding to support Jake and his work " This we have to watch out for. Science funding can be difficult to get, especially in tough economic times, and hopefully this child isn't simply exploited to bring in money (or fame) for John Ross. Hopefully Robin Williams will help this kid out if necessary. -

Two outstanding explanations of what happened:
1. RollingStone: "Why Isn't Wall Street in Jail?": http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/why-isnt-wall-street-in-jail-20110216
2. "Inside Job"(2010): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1645089/
After reading/watching these, I found myself wondering why I spent all those years accomplishing nothing in IT, when I could have been robbing banks from the inside with no worries about being prosecuted.

Re:Don't forget his other 70's TV series
Another series he did, besides "In Search Of..." (which was a cool show) from the early 80s that for some reason doesn't show up on his IMDB pagewas on Nickelodeon called
Standby... Lights Camera Action!
It was broken into segments where they showed "behind the scenes" making-of videos of movies including "Gandhi", "The Meaning of Life", and "Return of the Jedi" (examples here)

Don't forget his other 70's TV series
He wrote and hosted the series "In Search Of..." from 1976-1982
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074007/
" Lost civilizations, extraterrestrials, myths and monsters, missing persons, magic and witchcraft, unexplained phenomena. "In Search Of..." cameras are traveling the world, seeking out these great mysteries. This program was the result of the work of scientists, researchers and a group of highly-skilled technicians."
Many of these episodes were pure awesome for us kids that grew up just missing the first run of OST, but still getting to hear him wax poetic about alien visitors and way off the beaten path "science".

Re:Hmmm ...
If you can't read straight up C code and understand what the fuck is going on, stop calling yourself a programmer.
They used to say that about assembly. Try writing a modern game or GUI in assembly. You might well be able to do it, but by the time your'e done I'll have finished several projects and be moving on to the next one.
I don't think that the GP suggested writing a GUI or a modern game in assembly. Or C. But I've met fresh graduates that did not understood the difference between passing a parameter by value an passing it by reference. Don't you think that such "programmer" is going to produce crappy code even if using C++ or VB.NET to write OO code? Understanding for example pointers or generally "what the fuck is going on" helps there a lot.
Btw did you see Days of Thunder? You can be clever, talented and all that, but only understanding what's going under the hood can make you excellent.

Re:At the risk of my nerd card...As someone from the UK who was watching Dr Who in the seventies and eighties, the old seasons peaked with Tom Baker.
The later seasons with Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy seemed weaker; maybe that's because it was still aimed at a young age group that I was growing out of, or maybe it's because by then I'd seen enough US Sci Fi movies and TV shows that Dr Who looked distinctly low-budget.
The new series' have much higher production values, and seem to be pitched at an older audience - my kids can enjoy it, but there's something there for adults too.
David Tennant made a better Doctor than Christopher Eccleston though.Best candidate for Twelfth Doctor: Benedict Cumberbatch.

The IMDB Review ThreadYou might want to take a read through this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056751/board/nest/175533855
Someone is watching all of the complete episodes in order. As someone who has watched almost all of the remaining episodes (in fact, I started watching Troughton's War Games episode for the 3rd time last night), it is fascinating hearing an outsider's perspective of some of the episodes.
I tend to agree with most of what has been said here. For Classic, start with Baker and work your way up. Even though I still think most of Pertwee, Troughton and Hartnell is great to watch, there are a lot of slow episodes in those first three Doctors that you likely won't survive.
For modern, start with Eccleston (altho he wasn't my favorite) if only because there is a lot of background provided that you'll need for the rest of the (new) series.
