Re:Kubuntu LTS and Server LTS
Not sure what hovering toolbars you are referring to. I am using 12.04, since it is an LTS release, and will be supported for 3 years with security updates, and no surprises like you have with the other releases.
My desktop is really simple.
Just a vertical side bar on the left instead of on the bottom. It has the K Menu button for launching apps at the top, the Task Manager with all running apps in it, time and date, and the System Tray with a few frequently used apps.
And that is it.
Very Windows XP like in fact.

After all, you just want the freedom to dictate conversation, and since your words are so much better than anybody else's, you truly deserve that power.
Thank you for being so reasonable. Many of you carbetbagging yankees simply don't understand how precious my opinions are, but I respect you for being one of the few to admit it.
Thanks for convincing me not to drink the Texas Tea.
So long as you don't stop eating Texas beef stew or Texas pizza.
Maybe you should learn some humility.
You're right. I forgive you.

Re:ROI
Speaking of F-16s and UCAVs, the F-16 was once mooted for conversion into an unmanned version. There's not too much information floating about in public, but it was eventually cancelled due to the conversion (retrorit + service of the old airframes) being more expensive than buying a brand new RQ-1. Here's a (small, blurry) picture of one.

Re:I can think of a few rea$on$
The article goes on to quote her: '...residential customers have thus far shown little interest in TWC's top internet tiers. "A very small fraction of our customer base" ultimately choose those options.'"
Um, yeah - that's because it's waaaaaaaay overpriced.
I think $20 more per month is a fair price for any extra 1mb, and with the top tier at 35mb its faster than any consumer will ever need! I love my triple lock-in play!
Meh, here in Finland I pay 29e/month for this (uncapped) and I live in a town of 10k people. If they tried to raise their prices they'd lose my business to any of the 4 competing ISP's.

Re:Of course
I work as tech support at a small ISP. We sometimes get copyright infringement notices and the most we do is forward them to our clients. It's rare when we get them and I don't think we have a policy for "repeat offenders".
RIAA needs to stop blaming the spoon for making them fat. As people have already mentioned, for many, piracy was simply the more convenient way to acquire media. The more copyright holders lock down legitimate goods and the more complicated it becomes to purchase and use these goods legitimately, the more appealing piracy becomes. -

Researchers found that Americans perceive the line with the ends feathered outward (A) as being longer than the line with the arrow tips (B). San foragers of the Kalahari, on the other hand, were more likely to see the lines as they are: equal in length.

An idea for a better progress bar
This gave me an idea for a better progress bar. I even made a rough animated GIF.
Some details:
- It's like a helicopter shot of a car (the 'marker') driving down a highway. The position of the marker correlates to the estimated time remaining.
- The stripes on the road are to convey a sense of speed. The main purpose of this is to show if a process has hung.
- The coloured road sections indicate different processes. If possible, the final process should be coloured green.
To my thinking, this solves the problem of having to 'lie' to the user, while still giving them some useful information about remaining time and assurance that something is happening.
I'd value some feedback on this idea.

Re:It's all about technology
Cutting CO2 mainly depends on technology (or cutting the standard of living, which most people don't want to do), aimed at two areas:
1) Non-emitting cars. Electric cars look more viable every day; it's not inconceivable that most people could be driving them by by 2050.
2) Power generation. Whether it comes from coal sequestration or my preferred solution, nuclear fusion, cutting CO2 relies on improvements in power generation technology.
No it isn't, it's simply about insulation. Buildings and houses can save 90% of energy used by simply insulating things like attics and walls. Boring I know.

Re:That's all I need
Are you saying the Powerpuff Girls grew up and became hookers? I knew the economy was bad but that is just depressing...
I don't know about depressing... I always had a thing for Blossom; so now if she'll just take a bit of cash, my childhood fantasy can come true!
Are you serious? How the hell do you make it to Slashdot and not know about Rule 34?!
From the Rules of the Internet:
Rule 34: If it exists there is porn of it, no exceptions.
Rule 35: If no porn is found at the moment, it will be made.
Just add "rule 34" to any search term for the porn version. (search results w/ safe=off, links may be NSFW). Since this is your first time here's some complimentary Star Wars Rule 34., or if you're more the mile-high club type: Why not declare Rule 34 on Jets? (both SFW, non nudes)
If you need to invoke rule 35, just proclaim rule 34 has been violated to the right folks, then wait.
Welcome to the Internet.

Re:very very stealthy
I think this close up of the cockpit makes it clear that that static display isn't functional. The video looked a lot like an RC.
The sides of the cockpit, where the canopy should seal, look like plastic or cardboard. No canopy latch visible, no structure underneath the mating surface, and...is that a piece of masking tape?
-
Re:very very stealthy
It's a mock up. Do you seriously think that early tech prototypes designed to showcase potential cockpits are made of production hardware and materials anywhere?
Some questions/thoughts that to me show it is a mock/fake/whatever:
1. Where are the rudder pedals? In the BBC video the pilot's legs were clearly bent with his knees pointing up in the air. That means his feet were pretty much flat on the cockpit floor and I didn't see rudder pedals there. Maybe the edge of one in the cockpit photo here.
2. Again back to the knees- with his knees up in the air like that his legs are clearly blocking access to the two front panels on the left and right. The pilot couldn't even SEE those panels. I dunno, but I'm guessing there's stuff a pilot might need there at some point.
3. A last thought on the knees. I'm not a doctor, but I think that to pull heavy G's that may not be the most optimal body position.
4. Finally, that thing is SMALL. Like, tiny. What is this aircraft for anyways? It sure can't carry any ordinance.
5. The vids of the thing flying? Looks, behaves and sounds a lot like this RC F-16
So I totally agree this thing is a mock up, or prototype, or fake or whatever. What make's them look like idiots is it appears they are trying to pass it off as the real deal, and certainly implying it is functional and 'defending Iran'.
