This might be of interestSome weeks ago I wasted a wireless (or do you say "cordless"?) Logitech keyboard by accidentally spilling water on it. It went crazy, and now it has recovered a bit but not to the point of being really usable. I had heard a while ago about waterproof keyboards, and keeping in mind that if this happened once, it could happen twice, I decided to get one. I bought this:
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/akiba/hotline/2005
0 305/etc_airtouch.htmlIt cost me 30 euros, and it is actually a bit difficult to get used to it because it is weird to touch. Also, some keys are differently located than they usually are (e.g. the " \" key is at the left bottom corner, where in general the left ctrl key is located). I guess a non-foldable model would be better (this is really something I don't care about), but I think it still is a good buy for people like me who always have to drink coffee, water or something in front of their computer. Oh yeah, and if you have a pet too: I was amazed at how much cat fur was stuck between the keys of my previous keyboard when I opened it

Re:Of Course
Starting from plastic models of their favorite mecha, the Japanese have a genuine interest in robotics. The anime and game industries are big factors in Japan's advances in Robotics. Because of mainstream interest in mecha, especially Gundam, University clubs and hobbyist start huge projects on trying to replicate the cool mecha seen in anime.
Contrast to Robot Wars with wedges slamming each other (which I find to be quite monotonous and repetitive after the first few times), I believe that the path the Japanese are taking -- bipedal robots which are more versatile -- will benefit mankind in terms of usefulness and application. Heck, even the Japanese version of Robot Wars is much more entertaining to watch, with the robots going through various attack patterns. Check it out here -

Blu-ray has several things going for it. . .
Blu-ray has several things going for it. .
.
Playstation 3 inclusion of Blu-ray would prove to be a massive boost for the standard as it automatically gives an instant installed base in the tens of millions. As initial players will likely be relatively pricey, it's usually difficult to start the momentum to get enough installed base on the market so that studios would want to produce content for it, and more content usually then convinces more people to buy into the standard. However, by PS3 being Blu-ray compatible automatically creates a massive installed that studios can produce content for to start the ball rolling.
Secondly, Blu-ray seems to be more scalable then HD-DVD with comapanies planning 4-layer 100GB and 8-layer 200GB multilayered disks. Also, Blu-ray seems to be getting more hardware on the market then HD-DVD, especially since Sony and Matsushita (Panasonic, Technic, Fisher, etc) are backing it. Sony has just annouced Blu-ray drive for the PC that can write to write-once 50GB disks or rewritable-50GB disks.

Because of the name
More average joes who have used computers for the past years would most likely know more about Netscape than Firfox. A few reasons I can come up with is that websites of various companies will state in the bottom "Compatible with IE x.x and Netscape x.x". Also, I remember the installation cds of some ISP's like videotron and Bell Sympatico would provide Netscape.
It may be a theme fully bloated without extensions support but the Netscape name and logo have been more around than Firefox.
Silly marketing strategy but it seems to work from time to time.
On a side note who else agrees that the theme might somehow remind you of Neoplanet :o -
Specialized, but equally amazing I think
This website has a neat video of dancing robots on it. It obviously doesn't carry the same implications
that a low-energy walking robot does, but the motor control and balance gyros and the what-have-you
needed for this act are still pretty impressive.

More info in these slidesScroll down a bit here, there's some more tasty tidbits.
e.g. 234 M transistors (!) That's why I don't think this will be replacing the G5 any time soon. The die size (at the current prototype's 90nm) is over 200 mm2.
It'll have to get a fair bit smaller/cheaper before the PS3 can use it without major subsidies, and I don't know why they think general consumer devices will want it. God knows how much power it dissipates with all 8 SPEs clocking over at 4 GHz...

Two birds, one stone> According to most predictions we were meant to be enjoying lives of leisure by this point - working a 5-hour week in the paperless office, and driving to work in our hovercars.
Judging from these pictures of the Intel retail boxed heatsink for the Pentium 4 560J (3.6 GHz), by the time we get 10 GHz PCs, the hovercar problem will take care of itself.

Peripherals: Alpha-Data battery-powered 2.5" HDD case
HDD cases for both 2.5 and 3.5 inch drives are a dime-a-dozen these days. Alpha-Data tries to separate themselves from the pack with the "Copy BANK Case" - a 2.5" HDD case that supports battery-powered operation and can be used independent of a PC as a storage device for digital cameras and mp3 players.
Alpha-Data will release a USB2.0 external 2.5" HDD case that can operate on dry cell batteries, the "Copy BANK Case", in mid January 2005. It will have no fixed retail price but the street price is expected to be approximately 6000 yen.
Using the included battery box and 4 AA batteries, the case can be used independently as a portable HDD. The case supports hard disk up to 80GB in size.
The case can be directly connected to a digital camera, mp3 player or self-powered USB storage class device. When the case's "COPY button" is pressed, data is copied directly to the HDD.
The case can be used as a removable drive when connected to a PC. Power is provided by the PC's PS/2 port or USB port using the included cable. Supported operating systems are Windows ME/2000/XP and Mac OS9 or later.
The case is made of aluminium. Think about your breathing. It measures W80 x D140 x H14 mm in size and weighs 80 grams. Included accessories include a number of cables (mini USB-mini USB, mini USB - USB, mini USB - USB (female)) and a carrying case for the HDD case and battery box.

Re:Why is everything an iPod killer?
Differences:
H10 - 12 hours batt.
iPodMini - 8 hours
H10 - 5GB
iPodMini - 4GB
H10 - 1.5" TFT colour display. Gorgeous.
iPodMini - 1.67" grayscale LCD w/LED backlight
H10 - 95.5mm x 54.6mm x 15mm (96 grams)
iPodMini - 91mm x 51mm x 13mm (103 grams)
Except for size, the H10 wins. Plus it plays WMA, which is an advantage for a lot of people. -

Re:First things
I have also heard a theory that the japanese techno-lust is somewhat due to religious differences. Not so much current religious differences, but how eastern/western religious philosophy has shaped the societies we see today. The judeo-christian view of technology is that it's a distraction from your walk with god or some bullshit like that. False idols. Perhaps this is why the japanese get cool stuff like USB noodle cookers?

Lost in shitty Translation
The original Japanese interview on which this story is based on is here. It has a sequel at here.
But I found interesting is, there's difinitely some unfortunate mistranslation of those US/UK media (Gamespot, Gamesindustry.biz) that jumped on this 'confirmation' like some brainless Nintendo fanboys.
This is the literal translation of the original article (You can't find what Kawanishi stated directly, but a summary by the interviewer).
"For the release date (of PSP), he said, while it depends on negotiation with software makers, it's sure thing that (Sony) will release it (PSP) in this year." So what matters is not when it will be released, but when in this year it'll be released.
It's as if those news websites mistranslated it like "for the release date (of PSP), he said, while it's sure thing that (Sony) can release it (PSP) in this year, it depends on negotiation with software makers", but it's not the case, for even the caption of this paragraph is "The release is in this year with a reasonable price". It's an impossible speculation job to connect it with delay when even the original interviewer doesn't.
Since Kawanishi is the head of developers at Network Systems Division and not a high exec like CTO/CEO or whatever who can announce the exact date, he made it vague relating it with software schedule. But he confirmed the release in 2004, not delay. -

But in neither of those case can you interact with the image with your hands, because either the image is enclose in a glass sphere or it would be pretty dangerous to try to "interact" with an screen spinning fast enough to create the illusion. And in both of those cases, it's clearly based on multiple images, which 3DSolar claims they don't need. -
Re:From the 3Dsolar site...
Since both this article and their site give practically no information on how they create this effect, it's hard to speculate, but I would guess that if you can look at the object from different angles, it WILL appear 3D, since each eye will be getting a different view of the object.
At first I thought they were talking about a rotating screen that the image is projected onto, but from their description, it sounds like something else.
