Re:In the market
I am going to build a new PC and am in the market for a card. $100 on the graphics card would give me welcome flexibility on other components. Does anyone know if this can run Nethack at full res? What if you overclock it?
Maybe if you overclock it you can run nethack in tile mode with all it's pixlated glory.

Close, but no cigar.
For posterity: Then named Godspeed You Black Emperor!, they were in Ardmore, Oklahoma in March, 2003, and got hassled at a gas station, not while eating pancakes at IHOP. They had just finished playing a (great) show at Ridglea Theater in Dallas with Bardo Pond, and were en route to St. Louis.
Wikipedia has a concise summary, and notes that the ordeal was also mentioned in Michael Moore's Dude, Where's My Country?

Oh dear... You should (almost) always wish for "+3" because it pays better in the long run.

I posted the original comment on Folklore.org
You make my (Easter) day!
Not that I can prove this easily but I posted the comment on Folklore.org (in the Pirate Flag story) where I mentionned the flag found in the 660av/840av movie easter egg. The guy that did make the movie available found about it while reading my comment.
Now I'm happy to find that the movie is at last available on the net and that there is a Slashdot thread about it!!
In the days my friend had a brand new Centris 660av I found about the trick in a magazine.
So yes info has been published before, even on the web, but it's the first time the movie is downloadable by the public.
At the time I only watched the movie once or twice because you had to copy the preference folder to the hd to be able to make visible the movie file inside, and that took most of the remaining space on the 230megs HD.
The original file would need to be "Flatten" to play on windows since it is an old Quicktime 2 file that was not saved in the cross-platform format. These kind of problem are long gone since Quicktime now save every file as cross-platform by default.

Justin has changed karaoke
Thanks to the efforts of Justin Frankel, and Yannick Heneault the Karaoke bar I work at on the weekends was able to convert it's aging karaoke CDG collection to MP3+G's.
It's neat because we get to have AVS behind the lyrics. You used to have to buy an expensive JSUB unit if you wanted to "bluescreen" anything behind a CDG song.
We've been using the system for the last year or so. Customer response has been excellent. No more skipping or garbled words. No more confusion looking for songs. It just all runs perfectly. -
Re:I *like* OnStar
I was wondering, have you had any experience with third party OBD-II interface ICs, such as the one sold by these guys?
Seems there's some free software for them, too.
Just wondering, since I was thinking about giving it a shot. Might be fun to see just what I can find out about my car. :-) -
Re:Knoppix? Any CD bootable Linux 2.6 version? You should check out Bart's PE Builder. It allows you to build a bootable XP/2K3 rescue CD. Here's a good screenshot.
It looks like the site is down right now, but you should be able to find a google cache.

A bit of fun
In an IRC channel I hang out in, we had a bit of fun on the subject: behold The Matrix: Convolution.
There are no real spoilers in there, in case you were wondering.

Re:Unix is unix is unixYeah, I did before posting. I tried it again, typed "ls -Al |more" and the output was pretty much what you'd expect on a unix/linux box. I've got a jpg of the output here.
I'm gonna regret this link though...

And wanted to add that the idea isn't new as you can see in this recent thread on deadly.org here (See post "mp3's playing via lpr?").

Re:Interesting experiments: Silvering a mirror
I know in America they only have round pennies, but in Canada, pennies are a mixture of 12 sided coins, and perfectly round coins. While our nickels are also available in round and non-round styles, the round style strongly dominates.
HTH! :-) -
Re:An W2K SP3 experience.
Yep, the WSH (Windows Scripting Host) is a framework that allows you to use any language you like to script windows events.. windows comes bundled with VBScript and JScript (kinda like JavaScript, just more prorietary), but there are other addons available, such as Perl and Python.
Keep in mind WSH is not by default installed on all machines (I believe Win95 does not have it, some Win98 Installs do, and anything after 2K comes bundled with it), so you may need to grab the installer from here. -
Next hacker gathering ...
MS releasing the code would be fun

Re:Yeah, I did, but I've got other questions...How are the aliens supposed to convert a *stream* of bits into a TWO DIMENSIONAL image??? We're not shipping a piece of paper out in a capsule here.
There is a 1 bit wide border all around the page - this would help to separate the pages in the bitstream (128 1 bits, then 2 1 bits in every 127). This also answers your question "how will they know the dimensions".
Why do we assume they can turn this stream into two dimensions?
Hopefully they are intelligent enough to try and mush the data into 2 and 3 dimensions and see what patterns develop (it's what we would do).
And wouldn't it be easier to do a lexical analysis if all the individual symbols consisted of a *single* connected component
As long as the symbols are seen to each have unique patterns, I don't see a problem. The designers described that the symbols were chosen to be the most robust under different kinds of interference (causing bit errors).
Check out the designers' site, which shows all the pages as well as insightful commentary.

Atmospheric Error?Page 14 seems to list dominant components of our atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. However, under atmosphere they list O2 and Ar and CO2, but they don't list N2 - Nitrogen....
I find this very curious...

A testimonial
A few years ago, friends and i had started building an OS from scratch. Dubbed Pandora, we have a kernel that boots more machines than current Darwin can (you guessed it: PowerPC Macs).
I was responsible for the UI part (I claim no credits to the kernel, which also has a MacsBug-like debuger).
When I started working for my current employer (which also supports Linux for it's commercial apps), I wanted to make sure that my UI project ("Moira") was safe from any corporate entanglement. I had them sign a "copyright disclamer" wich specifically specifies that my employer disclaims any copyrights and interest in the project, thus protecting it.
On the other hand, this only covers this project, and I must ensure anything else doesn't go against the company's NDA (which I signed).
Both parties therefore are protected in what I feel is a mutually equitable agreement.
Karma karma karma karma karmeleon: it comes and goes, it comes and goes. -

Details of the Dune long version
Here's a good page to get all the info:
http://pages.infinit.net/bonesnet/Smithee.htm
Here's a quick rundown:
-DUNE was originally released to theatres at Christmas of 1984 in Todd-AO/70MM with a running time of 137 minutes.
-It is obvious that David Lynch shot a lot more footage than what we saw in the theatrical print. Lynch himself envisioned a four-hour epic film. Unfortunately, Universal wanted a running time that would be more accessible to its audience since three-hour- and four-hour-plus films were not currently popular in the 1980s. So the studio had Lynch re-edit the film to its 137-minute theatrical version.
-At one point in 1984, Lynch had announced he was going to release a legitimate "special edition director's cut" on home video, but decided to move on to other projects such as "Blue Velvet". Soon, word and rumor about the extra footage had spread everywhere, and by the time DUNE had finished its original cable run on HBO, Universal felt that the time had come to produce a "special edition" of their own, and the result was released to television in May of 1988.
-David Lynch was unhappy with what MCA TV had done and did not approve of this edition. So thus it was he successfully petitioned to take his name off the credits and replaced it with "Allen Smithee", the standard Directors Guild of America pseudonym for directors who do not want credit for their own work.
-This first TV version of DUNE, pieced together under the (mis)guiding hand of Harry Tapelman, Vice President of MCA TV Special Projects, was originally created for the Turner networks, but instead released to syndication in 1988 on the Universal Pictures Debut Network (which also was responsible for the slightly expanded version of "Legend", and the severely edited version of "Brazil"). Although Universal touted this as having "more than 50 minutes of never-before-seen footage", this actually contained 35 minutes of unseen footage. The remaining 15 contained the repeated main and end credits, a newly shot prologue, and so-called "new" scenes fabricated from outtake and test footage.
A complete list of the changes made is available at the web page I mentioned above.
