Re:Go Mozilla!I just love seeing posts like this - it re-assures me that the group-think brainwashing going on in our colleges today concerning open-source software is progressing as well as it is. Open-source works well in college because you can borrow someone's code from the class you're taking; unfortunately, open-source doesn't cut it in the corporate world.
For those of you who will now go on and spew poetic on how you have that OS with the stupid penguin as a mascot running your web servers; If something happened to Linus Torvalds that prevented him from continuing to develop the Linux kernel, you'd all be either running around like decapitated chicken or nervous school-boys at their first school dance, wondering what to do when the music started. The only reason that open-source software like Linux is being used in the corporate world today is because these uber-geeks who slipped it in via the back door were brainwashed about the supposed superiority of open-source software to the point that if they don't have it running on a machine that's less than 20 feet away from them, they begin to suffer from "separation anxiety" - how else could you explain the ultra-geeky idea of having Linux on a friggin' PDA?
I'm sure glad you chose to post this as an Anonymous moron - If anyone found out who you were, we'd be calling your boss to tell him what a total GIT you are.
"...train my workers to use ONE browser...." - are you effing serious?!?! I didn't think that chimps were allowed to be employed...but then again, look at the current software abortions coming from the eliteist "open-source" community, Mozilla being the best example.
What do you have to train your workers to use? The buttons on the menu bar that are pretty much the same between IE and Mozilla? The phrase coming to mind is "red herring", or better yet....TROLL!!!

Re:Supports only Windoze Media files?!!?!WMA? No, the Zaurus plays mp3, wav, and mpeg-4/DivX video files. No, it doesn't do Ogg yet, but I understand someone is working on it.
As for a review, I wrote a long review of the SL-5000d (the developer edition of the SL-5500) back in January. Linkage below.

And SonyEricsson P800
Another Symbian OS phone with GPRS, MMS, Java MIDP, and a digital camera - but this one is tri-band so works in the US!
Page with 3D animation
News story with details and lots of pictures (on subsequent pages) -
more Nokia pics...at this page
it's just GSM 900/1800, so i guess you americans will just have to wait...
-
Personally...
I'm waiting for this bad-boy from Sony Ericsson. All the same type of functionality in a more phone like shape. Color screen, etc. I need a PDA AND a phone. Clam shells don't do it for me. I'm also in love with the trillian, but I'm betting that Symbian kicks Palm ass in the phone dept.

Nokia Wins
Here's a news item at InfoSync about the new Nokia GSM, GPRS, HSCSD, and WiFi PCMCIA card.
Pretty freakin' cool. I want one.

Semi-duplicate post?
Gee... if /. gets to post duplicate (but slightly different) stories, does that mean I have to repost my comments -- but slightly altered?I refer to this comment.
I referred to better pictures of the Journada 928,
- infoSync's article [infosync.no] has a much better picture of the Jornada 928 [infosync.no] than the token thumbnail Forbes provides.
-
They also have an article about what has been added to WinCE [infosync.no] (guess I know why MS calls it PocketPC now...) to turn it into a mobile phone-integrated PDA. There are six (!) pages of screen shots in that one. You can also look forward to "...Mobile Information Server (MIS) 2002 Enterprise Edition, which adds Server ActiveSync..." -- here's ANOTHER pie MS wants to sell you pieces of.
The interesting thing is that ringtones -- which phone companies want to charge you for -- aren't there. Instead, you can assign
.WAV files as ring tones, and specific files for specific callers. Wonder what the motivation for that move is...?Still... I want one!

Better PalmOS & DevicesCooler packaging and whiz bang features are nice, but I want to see a platform upgrade with BeOS tech and faster processors!

Re:BeOS as Embedded OS
In the first week in February, Palm is having it's annual developer's conference called PalmSource in San Jose. This year it looks like they are going to be releasing details about the new PalmOS v5.0 which is the next generation, 32-bit Palm OS incorporating bits of BeOS. (They started working on the OS before they bought Be.) Remember that Palm is also spinning off their operating systems division soon, so I assume that they are going to try to use this conference as some sort of launching pad. Here's a link to an InfoSync article about the new Palm OS.

Re:Not Useable (yet)
PDA's are becoming faster and faster. I wonder when they'll catch up with game consoles in terms of power. As for having joysticks, it would be ideal to use bluetooth. Bluetooth doesn't need to compete with WiFi, they complement each other.

Nice watch but...A buddy of mine has the original Casio watch. It's resolution makes it worthless. When he snaps pictures of us we're essentially a blob of grey pixels. A color version just means we'll be pink(ish) pixels.
Now the eyemodule cameras for Handspring PDAs are just right. I had the original and now have an eyemodule2 and can't say enough good things about it.
- Takes 640x480 color pictures
- Captures short movies (although in Quicktime)
- Incredibly small and portable
- Comes with a nice custom cut foam aluminium case
- Nice geek factor(!)
Obviously if you want hi-res pictures then a watch or a PDA addon is not what you need. But compare these pictures taken with the Casio watch, and these pictures taken with an eyemodule2. If you're a Handspring owner it's absolutely worth checking out.
But what I really want to know is what's up with that Nokia 7650 phone features on the same page as the new Casio watch?! It's beautiful! - Takes 640x480 color pictures

Re:Hmm yes and no...
Just in case anyone is interested.
Yes, mobile phone with digital camera.
Nokia is going to release one, according to this infosync news.
Pretty nifty... -
Telepong
That's just fine, I submited a link to the same site about the new Linux Telepong phone which is far more revolutionary, and my story got rejected.

Re:slick
Konqueror/Embedded should run quite nicely on this one. That wasn't too hard to port, I've heard.
Of course, it looks like the Yopy already has a very nice web browser, Opera (you see the icon?)
-
Opera and Qt/Embedded -- looks nice!
What I've seen earlier on Linux PDAs is often something like 'Look, I can run xclock on this!'. People tend to forget that a PDA's interface is something entirely different than on a desktop.
Refreshing then, to see the well thought-out Qt/Embedded GUI on this one. And one of the images even shows an Opera icon! I've used Opera a long time on my Psion 5mx, and it blindingly fast (this nice PDA only has a 36 MHz processor). The recent announcement of Opera on Sharp's Linux PDA Zaurus is another plus point for Opera. Way to go!

Nokia's authentication initiative more interesting
An alternative to passport? I found this more interesting than a new phone.
"Microsoft is attempting something like this with its Passport effort which is tied into .NET as a proprietary solution, but now Nokia is making a shot too, and their effort aims for an open and standards-based solution." -

Interesting article here on sony's attempts to standardize robot architecture. At least they're playing nice with whatever competitors they have.

Secure Digital CardsFrom Infosync's article on the Toshiba Genie (linked from the HP article).
Something that also should be mentioned is that the SD Card slot doesn't support the SD Memory card security function.
This is good news for all of us who oppose copyright-protected media. It is also nothing new, of course. Casio made the same wise decision to employ the SD technology (with its potential advantages over the existing MMC spec) minus copyright-protection. On devices that feature MP3 playback and e-book viewing as key selling points, restricting use of MP3s and e-books would be a hard move to justify.

voice recogintion
this looks to be a better bet get rid of START or even app altogether and just use a voice enabled
for a linux one
http://www.infosync.no/en/news/n/289.asp
and phillips plus a japanese company have done this well
I was at a tradeshow and they had a huge fan and a BMW dash and seat you could talk to the MP3 player and radio even when the fan was on and lots of background noise (the fan simulated being in a car with the roof down apparently)
whatever it was V cool

Linux JornadaOn the same is an article about an economy Jornada to be released at roughly the same time. It'll run some form of Linux on a 133MHz processor with a monochrome screen.
Sounds like a good Palm competitor, except this thing will actually be able to playback mp3s with software. But hasn't Sharp or someone already released unit like this?

same graphic artist?
My question is: were these "concepts" Adobe'd up by the same graphic artist who "produced" the promised but recently cut Symbian-based Odin phone and the promised but recently cut GPRS wireless?
We're talking about a company that makes revenue by popping up full-page Get Rich Quick ads when you visit their site. Taking these guys seriously is a bit of a stretch.
Fuck, if I could afford $50k for a decent Adobe workslave, could I get on the front page of Slashdot too?

It says you can combine all 3 screens on the ACE to watch a movie...
I dont know what kind of movie you'd want to watch on a screen like this

Link, etcCorrect Link:

The Pop up full size ad page is annoying.
I remember the old Star Trek Tricorder that was sort of like a PDA with sensors, but was the size of a 5x8 book. (Book? what is this thing called a book?) What is funny, looking back, is that it was not believable that something would be highly functional, while being really thing (like a clipboard) That is more believable now.
I must say that certain form factors will tend to be used more often, just by being more traditional, such as a tablet, etc.
I like the attempt to get into more exotic form factors and display options
Check out the Vinny the Vampire comic strip

Xscale or SA2 and windows XP aka stinger
check out the windows XP on handhelds
this is what would run on them out of the box and they would most likely use an Xscale CPU because of the mips
