Re:The guys with the hats colored red
kernel.org uses Apache2 also -- these guys sure know their stuff too. although I don't think they use PHP.
Anyway, I'll stick with Apache2--it works perfectly for me (and, no, I'll not give out my DDNS name here...I'd rather not stress-test it with a Slashdotting). -
Just for clarification of the Linux discussion
As the author of the bluesnarf report and an important member of the team that did the experiment, I can tell you that Slackware Linux 9.0 distribution was used as a basis. In addition to this, Bluez and a recent linux kernel (linux-2.6.2) has been installed on this system. I like Knoppix very much, though. It gives Microsoft users a fair chance to seriously think about getting rid of their expensive bugware. Linux forever
;) -
Re:The most interesting bit.... KNOPPIX 3.4!
As a member of the team that was doing the measurements at the CeBIT and author of the Bluesnarfing paper I know, that Slackware 9.0 has been used as a basis system. The Bluez bluetooth implementation and a recent linux-kernel (linux-2.6.2) have been installed on the system separately. I am not saying that KOPPIX is a bad thing (I saw Klaus Knopper here in Salzburg, recently)! Knoppix absolutely rules!

NWFSWhen are we going to see some action on Jeff Merkey's NWFS driver? The legal status of that code has been up in the air for years now, and as each day goes by, it will become harder and harder to bring it back up to sync with a modern kernel.
I had to rescue data from a Novell fileserver that had become corrupt, and NWFS was invaluable in doing so. But, I had to compile an ancient kernel specifically for that purpose.
If Novell really is committed to Linux, perhaps they can shed some light on this murky topic.

Yes. -
file selector
They have been using the new file selector in the Fedora Core 2 test1 release, which was supposed to freeze today for the test2 release. Very nice. Hopefully this means GNOME 2.6 will stabilize and be release in time to include them both in Fedora Core 2.

Gee something sponsored by HP relating to linuxmmm, well there is this. Does that count? It is a little project called the kernel. Some linux fans seem to think it is important.
Grep it for HP and Compaq. Now grep it for IBM.
So I would say HP is as committed as IBM. Both have something to gain by linux. They just have different ways of going about it. Yes that Linux add is nice. Helping making the kernel available for free is also nice.

Re:music/audio on linux:
This was modded insightful? While I know that this is more of a compositing program--at least from what I read so far...as I have shamefully not RTFA
Obviously. If you had, you'd know that it's not intended to be used for composition.
I'm going to take this opportunity to bitch about the one thing that has been keeping me from making the switch to Linux for all these years: Audio Apps
I have no idea what your requirements are. I don't know when you last looked at the Linux music scene. To me, it seems like the pro audio applications available are progressing at a fantastic rate. But without knowing your needs, I don't know whether it's good enough for you.
I'm no industry elitist that demands ProTools. in fact, I hate protools. The interface leaves much to be desires...granted, i'll buffer that (admittedly harsh) opinion: I'm a huge fan of CoolEditPro.....("eww, PC audio"...I can hear it already),
The hot app for professional multitrack audio recording and editing in Linux is Ardour. But if you don't like ProTools, you may not like Ardour, since its interface is very derivative of ProTools.
The underlying audio subsystems are a far cry from what windows offers. And what I experienced with in my limiting dealings with aRTS leaves much to be desired. (Think: latency) And I'm sure that has a lot to do with it....(why hasn't ASIO or an equiv been implemented yet?)
I don't know any Linux audio folks using aRts for their pro-audio work. Instead, the fundamental infrastructure for pro-audio on Linux these days is JACK. JACK is good stuff, designed from the ground up for professional audio work.
Other people have given you info to look at about specific pro-audio applications: Ardour, JAMin, Hydrogen, Rosegarden, etc. -- all of which can interface through JACK. Regarding plugins, there are tons; take a look at the LADSPA website. These plugins can be manipulated in a rack-like GUI interface, if that's what you want.
Regarding latency, I routinely get sub-ms kernel/software latencies; I'm limited by the soundcard's capabilities at this point. Of course, to get good latency performance in Linux, you have to be willing to do things like patch your 2.4 kernel (see e.g. Robert Love's preemptable kernel patch and Andrew Morton's low-latency patch. The 2.6 kernels are supposed to provide low latency from the start; it's not yet clear whether they do.
Many of the apps above are still in development/pre-release stages. In other words, while they're completely useable (and many people are using them to make good music), you should expect bugs. For the most part, the big ones are gone; but still, saving your work frequently is a good idea.
To me, the biggest problem in Linux pro-audio right now isn't applications. They're not done yet, but they're there, and they're advancing at an amazing rate. To me, the biggest problem is the same one that afflicts a lot of open source projects: lack of good documentation. For one example, the Ardour manual is skeletal; many (most?) people figure out how to use it either from their previous experience with ProTools, or from actually looking at the ProTools manual instead. The situation is the same for other projects. Fortunately, there are lots of mailing lists that

Re:How nice of IBM..
I think few people do.
> ANSI-Java?
Yes, effectively. The only way any open source implementation of Java are above question would be if Sun actually drops their formal conformance requirements.
I understand that Microsoft has C# is an ANSI standard (or ISO standard??).
I don't see standardization as conveying much trust in Microsofts case although it might convey more with Sun. I think the availability of complete, alternate implementations that are not backed by a single entity is more important.
OTOH, an ANSI standard would mitigate Sun's fears that Java will fork badly. Although, again, with a, central, Free codebase and a development model that encourages participation destructive forkage would be a smaller risk. -

Re:Missing the point
Things are tight fisted because Sun wants a solid, CONSISTANT platform. This was a MAJOR REASON for the lawsuit that they fought and WON against Microsoft and their VM implementation
And, open-source software would be inconsistent because.......?
Inconsistent, like Apache?
or, perhaps, MySQL?
I get it. You mean inconsistent like this, this, or this?
Oh, the above aren't languages, like php or perl?
Eh, wait a minute. These are all *successful* projects, that are consistent?
If Sun were to open Java sources, it would be trivial to introduce a license (EG: GPL) that would largely offset forking of the codebase. Their best bet would be to pull a "QT" - open the source as GPL, then sell commercial licenses.

ACPI cure for 2.4.25 HOW-TOMany people complained that kernels since 2.4.22 broke ACPI support on their hardware.
The cause is a brand new ACPI implementation which has a cutoff date of January 1st 2001. If your computer's BIOS is older than that, any ACPI support that might be present will be completely ignored by the kernel. ACPI hacker Len Brown explains that while the cutoff date is indeed arbitrary, it was already being used by certain distributions who noticed a pattern in when BIOSes with broken ACPI support where manufactured, so the ACPI hackers stuck by that concensus.
If you know for fact that ACPI worked fine on your computer until 2.4.21, you can enable it again: the cure is to put acpi=force in your bootloader configuration options.
Len also noted that there might eventually be a whitelist of older BIOS versions whose ACPI support is spotless. If you feel that your motherboard is one of those that should be whitelisted, file a bug at Kernel.org. Len makes absolutely no promise whatsoever that such a whitelist will ever be implemented, but still leaves the door open for people to manifest their interest via the above bug report form.

Re:Linux Device Drivers
I couldn't agree more. A month ago I started serious kernel programming and my code wouldn't have been what it is if I hadn't found out about the free, online version of the second edition.
Some other useful sites :
the Linux kernel API reference
Linux cross reference, especially the `identifier search'.
the driver porting series over at LWN.net (which Rufus211 alreay pointed out).
the module init tools FAQ
this document, aptly titled `the linux kernel'
apart from these there are many more interesting links, but mostly those have to do with specialty domains, such as networking or memory management. I pasted my bookmarks.html to my personal website.
And lastly, if you want to do cross-version /dev (mknod and devfs), mmap, module or networking development, please take a look at our project's cvs server through our website (webcvs) at ffpf.sourceforge.net. The directory ffpf/srv/v1.1/generic contains some files I created that work on both 2.4.24 and 2.6.1 and which I'll test on a 2.3.99 system shortly. -

Kerberos + PAM??
I may be totally out of line, but the idea of single sign-on through tickets/tokens already works rather well with Kerberos. Why not incorporate Kerberos into the Jabber system?
I know nothing of Jabber, but looking at the jabber components they seem like the might be able to use Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM) by telling that service to authenticate using Kerberos. Kerberos is not so difficult to implement using PAM and you can even set it up for fail over between different authentication methods.Even installing Kerberos is not a bit deal anymore. For several years now it's been part of distros as ready-to-use RPMs or
.deb packages. If you combine Kerberos with OpenLDAP, then you get great flexiblity with users and groups in addition to the security, scalability, and platform independence lacking for weaker substitutes like MSAD. -

EDD Disk Signature patch accepted into kernel 2.6.2-rc1-mm1
Dell engineers have submitted a kernel patch which allows Linux to determine which disk the BIOS believes is the system boot disk. Without this patch, Linux must guess which disk BIOS believes is the boot disk, which is pretty easy in a simple system configuration, but impossible in a system with multiple disks attached to multiple controllers.
Yep. It's great to see people from companies like Intel,IBM, SGI, HP, Dell all contributing.

Hey, thanks for the help guys. I will use that next time I upgrade. I forgot to say that I use Gentoo, and prefer their patches, so I need to wait for the Gentoo developers to relese their version of the patched kernel. Righ now the 2.6 tree is of version 2.6.1, but the latest stable is 2.6.2. I tried patching today, but the 2.6.2 patches do not fit well with the Gentoo patches.
Again, thanks for the help. -

Back in the old days when the migration from 2.2 --> 2.4 was taking place many desktop'ers said 2.4 was ready at about 2.4.2. This was sooooo not the case, the system was unstable and generally had many many "little" bugs, which can amount to one very large headache for your average sysadmin.
Until Linus and the gang get the bug counts down see this Then I'm not using the damn thing. Of course YMMV up until a few weeks ago I was running a 2.4.18 kernel that was manually patched with XFS and NPTL. -
