Slashdot has a tradition of not wanting to accept criticism. Its engrained in the attitude of their 'editors'. There was an infamous comment that got modded down hundreds of times in a very small frame of time. The post just happened to criticize Slashdot's policies and editors.

Then we had people like Jon Katz and Michael Sims. If you remember either of them, you know what I'm talking about. Katz posted sensationalist news stories about how young geeks were being "oppressed" by society but was finally canned after he fabricated a story about some young Afghani who was getting on the Internet with his Commodore 64 (LMAO). Slashdot refused to acknoledge the false story or even tell us why he suddenly departed Slashdot afterwards.

Michael Sims, the dogmatic and schizophrenic editor who was a former member of the Censorware project. He hijacked the website of a very popular anti-censorware project that was well known in the OSS community, yet Slashdot continued to allow him to be one of the custodians of a website that geeks and nerds all throughout the OSS community supported. The stories he "edited" often contained blatant political opinions and slams against people he didn't like, instead of continuing the tradition of providing balanced news for the OSS community that didn't try to divide the community. Sims recently disappeared from Slashdot. Slashdot continues to refuse to acknowledge him.

So I agree. If Slashdot can take money from Microsoft to slam the OSS movement and Linux, why can't they take some criticism from RMS?

Yes, I also have a problem with a lack of alternatives. There is no lack of other sites that post news for nerds, but there is no site with anywhere near the readership that Slashdot has - Slashdot is a real institution, everbody knows it. Not that the Slashdot readership is all good, hell no; it's just really really large and this quantity entails the existance of a certain degree of quality, if you're willing to look for it or if moderation works as advertised.

That said, one of the sites that always gets mentioned when people ask for alternatives to Slashdot - and rightly so, I guess - is kuro5hin (also known simply as k5). It's really, really different though, different readership (maybe smarter, but only on average), different topics, different moderation system. K5 and Slashdot readers have an odd sort of relationship, you can see remarks about each other regularly on both sides. Maybe somebody else can say more, I always think it's fairly strange. Personally, I've tried to get into K5 a couple of times, never worked out.
Apart from K5, what's left? Recently I bookmarked digg, but I haven't gotten into it, and I doubt I will for reasons outlined in the first paragraph. There have been attempts of explicitly creating an alternative "better" Slashdot, most notably Technocrat by none other than Bruce Perens, which was pretty much a failure, although I am surprised to see there still are lots of news items and between 1 and 5 comments on each (hah!). Oh and of course there's Fark which to me is pretty much like a reverse-K5 from Slashdot's point of view - take from that what you will.

My first impression of WOW was that this technology would evolve into virtual malls useful for real world business operations. Browse and purchase business supplies, that sort of thing. Or visit an Amazon book store. Interact immediately with sales staff etc.

The article brought up an idea that never occurred to me before. WOW characters could join in marriage or civil unions. Opposite sex partners could have children.

I advanced a WOW character to level 60 just to see how the game worked, then cancelled the game subscription. There is no way I can put that much more time into a game.

Yes, once again its another editor fuckup - why is everyone still so surprised that this happens? The 'editors' barely pay lip service to their title and I doubt very much that they read the comments either. At face value there is no real passion from the creators of the site - its just the same old shit day after day.

To explain further, Slashdot exists for one purpose: to make money for parent company OSDN. There is nothing wrong with that in itself but don't expect a high quality site the way its currently run. The Slashdot business model (if you can call it that) seems to be to provoke reaction from the loyal crowd of slashbots that frequent the site. Inflammatory / trollish stories (e.g here) and dupes cause the page hits (and therefore ad revenue) to go through the roof.

As a result, most of the comments I see on the stories are neither insightful, interesting or informative. There seems to be no real balanced discussion - something I feel is a product of the moderation system which rewards those who conform to the slashbot mindset and censors everything else. This democratic method of editing the comments is terrible - especially where technical issues are concerned, as a lot of nonsense is modded up by people who don't know otherwise.

You are probably wondering why I read Slashdot. Partly morbid curiosity and partly to laugh at both the flame wars which invevitably break out and the well crafted trolls.

To conclude, Slashdot is neither really "News for Nerds" nor is it "Stuff that matters". If you want the former, go to somewhere like arstechnica or kuroshin and if you want actual stuff that matters, the BBC are hard to beat.

While your "history" is vaguely correct, it's missing a great deal of real fact. Apparently, MS bought their TCP/IP stack from Spider software. This appears to have been licensed from UCB since the copyrights on it predate the open source release of the BSD TCP/IP stack.

But would the users change over drafts to stable, or would the editors?

Good question, I don't know what the best solution would be. Perhaps draft pages could be periodically placed in a vote queue, which users could periodically visit and vote each draft up or down. (Preferrably, voters would be presented with a draft in which changes from the original are highlighted.) If a draft passes voting, it replaces the "stable" article.

For some idea of how this can work, head over to kuro5hin and sign up for an account. All their articles go through a community voting process, which mostly works (though the trolls seem to make up a significant minority of the voting users - this would undoubtedly be a problem for wikipedia as well).

If there are too many drafts in the voting queue, it could be split by topic into multiple queues, or users could be presented with a random subset of drafts.

But you're not wrong. The article is nothing but a series of false dichotomies, where really a tertium quid is usually the more accurate viewpoint.

Take abortion vs. the death penalty. Personally I'm both pro-life in the anti-death penalty and the anti-abortion sense. But not for the same reasons, and I understand perfectly the thinking of those who don't share my anti-death penalty sentiments. Pro-life opinion regards the unborn as innocent human life. Pro-death penalty opinion regards the criminal to be executed as very guilty indeed. The two cannot automatically be regarded as moral equivalents, and it's not reasonable to expect them to be.

Same with the on-topic (more or less) information question. There is information that ought to be public and information that ought to be private. Information that affects public policy in a democracy, information that controls how the machines we use and depend on -- sometimes for our livlihoods, sometimes for our lives -- this kind of information, that directly affects us and the public sphere, ought to be free. My bank balance, on the other hand, is none of anyone else's business unless I choose to make it so.

While it certianly isn't an original comparison, even when I made it, I think it is worth wondering why we encourage kids to hit each other as hard as they can in real life, and are afraid of virtual violence. -- and perhaps more importantly why none of our lawmakers are pointing this out and yet we keep voting for them...

We both know that mistakes can be done without motive, and that sidebar does look a little childish, but who do you expect to hear from? I'm sure a K-5 student would offer advice with less ulterior motives, if he had any advice to give.

The problem is intractable in any society. Take a look at Iraq, it's currently a police state occupied by 100s of thousands of troops, yet there are bombs going off every day.

You can't stop someone who is willing to give thier own life to commit terrorist acts. It's too easy, regardless of laws. Unless of course you want to put everyone in prison.

If you really want a solution, and you may no like it, here goes;

• Try not to piss people off. When was the last time the Swiss had a terrorist attack on thier soil? Maybe being neutral is not such a bad thing. At least it would seem to limit the number of people willing to give thier life to terrorize you.
• Ignore it. Imagine if the networks didn't interrupt normal programming for minor terrorist events. If it was treated just like the murders they report on each day. Sort of takes the wind out of the sails if you don't get a lot of press coverage.
• Don't punish your own people, it's not thier fault. There is no reason to take rights away from Americans. Doing so may make more Timothy McVeigh's then it catches international terrorist. We have as many nuts in this country as any other, let's not piss them off either.

Some people believe (rightly or wrongly) that the US government were somehow involved in the 9/11 attacks - either by direct action or by lack of action - precisely to have a pretext for 1) reduction of civil rights, and 2) launching a large-scale military campaign in the middle east. I went to check it out yesterday and, while I didn't spend much time with it, it seemed there wasn't anything that could be done without signing up for a profile first! It hurts us, precious!

To be honest its the first one that has really impressed me. I looked at slashcode, scoop, zope, plone, postnuke, mambo.

When I started using drupal I got the same feeling as when I started using Mac OS X. To continue the OS analogy postnuke and phpnuke are more like windows whereas zope and plone are kinda linux of the CMS world.

It's an interesting phrase. The reason I don't use the sig field is a nasty experience. On 9/11 2001 I removed a witty joke sig that I had back then, and participated in a huge thread about the tragedies of that day. A couple of days later I put the sig back and took part in other discussions. Then for some reason I checked one of my 9/11 comments, and was horrified to see my witty joke sig under my comments there. In that context the sig was horribly out of place and disrespectful.

If slashdot should offer optionally "sticky" sigs (sigs that stay with each comment), like Scoop sites do, I'd use that immediately.

And as a programmer (the black sheep of the family), I strongly believe that programming is an art form. The article talks about finding examples of software that are "art"... but I think every instance of programming is art. I recently got into a fairly in-depth discussion about this topic: Programming: Technical or Artistic. I think one very interesting point is that both software and "normal" art have an audience. The programmer creates a work of art in the medium of a programming language and a physical computer system. The audience, the customer/user of the created software system, may appreciate the software or not: there is no objective measure to say that software is "correct". Software, like art, does what it does, and the audience determines its value, beauty, utility, and esthetics.
