yes, it does.
why is it that we are debating whether or not the universe started with a big bang, while guys like stephen hawkings are imagining multiple universes creating and destroying themselves, in open and closed systems, dimensions and branes and all sorts of weird shit, nevermind we still don't have a Unified Grand Theory of Everything, or even a descent connection between Quantum Physics and Astrophysics_Scale Classical Physics. or at least _i_ don't. mabye i missed something, where the scientists in harvard or cambridge or mcgill somewhere decided how to travel through time, what time is, how to move energy from one universe to another (or even, if there _is_ another universe,) how to use the corelation effect properly or to go between going-faster-than-the-speed-of-light and -going-the-speed of light...right down to how it is, that human's can even exist in thought---as in, that soul-thing that descartes was talking about...how does it work? at what layer does it interact with the universe? is there a god? is there a greater layer of reality that our universe, big bang to slow freeze, is merely a part of? is everything we know, everything we have seen so far not even a speck to some grand massive multiuniverse sized _life form_? personally i see a lot of room for improvement, ESPECIALLY in the fundemental axioms of thought, reason, and science. and definitely some changes in the fundemental thought processes of the mainstream human being.

For all those space is a vacuum commenters
The soundwaves that were found are an impression of quantum scale energy fluctuations carried to earth by cosmic microwave background radiation. Scientists were able to measure the waves by looking at cosmic microwave background (CMB). These early soundwaves are thought to have created super and giant clusters of galaxies with their travel. The soundwaves are actually contained in primordial plasma. They are effectively overtones or harmonics of the big bang explosion that is said to have created the universe.
I did a story that posted on Kuro5hin some time back about this that goes into just a touch more detail about ramifications for this sound. -
civil disobedience
I saw this story on kuro5hin the other day. Trhurler posted a comment that civil disobedience is not merely "breaking the law for a good reason" but a willingness to be subject to negative consequences. The students may be eager to see their day in court, hopefully to set a good precedent, but their ISPs may not. Even though the students sites sport INDIRECT links, which as far as I know have not previously been subject to takedowns.

Here's what you were saying...So you're answer is for the little guys to stand united right? Does not deja vu strike you at this very moment? Read this and tell me this is not exactly what you were trying to say. Communism has been tried before, and it will not prevail simply because of the nature of humans. Perhaps this is a better K5 discussion, but humans are inherently selfish and ethno-centric.
Perhaps you are wanting to say "look at linux, the product of many that is inherently better." I will respond by asking you to look at Mandrake, SuSe, and Red Hat. All of them are companies, smaller than the ones you hate, but companies nonetheless.
And you hate politics and politicians who have no regard for a small few? Would you like it if they always had regard for the minority? Think about it, there is a minority of people who would like kiddie porn to be legal. There is a minority that would like us to put a military base on the moon. If the minority were represented all the time, no decisions could be effectively made, and if they were, it would only be the minority of those who have power.
Do you dislike your representative? Campaign to have them removed. Do you dislike a certain law that might be passed? Campaign to have it killed. The key is that it is all in your hands. The louder noise you make, the more people will listten. Indeed, for you to be spitting drivel out in any way requires you to make an action to back it up -- something that is unique in our modern world. It's never been brighter because the little guy can raise some hell.

Re:Funny
If you check out the actual post that got the guy into trouble you'd see that he didn't post anonymously. He had his full name and email address out in the open; not too hard to trackdown. And it makes you think, what kind of idiot would seriously plot in public to kill someone and use their real fucking name? Either a naive intellectual with no actual intent or an idiot who's not capable of pulling it off in the first place. That's who.

Re:Funny
true. true. Apparently some poor fool made similar remarks on k5 a while back, and did indeed receive a personal visit from the SS. No charges filed, but 'tis a rude awakening indeed when your online words come and knock on your door.

Re:Google?
My hobbyist project was picked up by Google after a while, but it wasn't until I retroactively changed my comment signature here on Slashdot and on Kuro5hin (thereby creating many links to my project page) that it went to the top of the search results. It wasn't my intent to subvert Google in any way - I was quite surprised by the dramatic result.
There have been some less-than-scrupulous advertising companies in the business of that publishing dummy machine-generated web pages to exploit this trick. The dummy pages were typically filled with repitions of some nonsense paragraph, with self-links (to other dummy pages) and client-sponsored links interspersed here and there. The idea was that the self-linking would make the site look like a large, legit site to Google, which would mark it as relatively well-trusted and influential. Then Google would dutifully note the client-sponsored links and rank them highly. I believe Google has worked on ways to stop this; I don't know how successful they've been, or if the dummy-site makers are still around.

Useful article over at Kuro5hin
Yesterday somebody at K5 posted a short article listing sites with downloadable music, including Magnatune (which somebody else mentioned).
-
Legal != commercial
Seems only thing considered legal nowadays is something making money for someone - preferably some (RI)|(MPA)AA kind of outfit.
*Free* stuff also is legal. If a band decides to offer their music for free download, this is legal, too.
Go to that other site for a nice discussion and list of free legal music downloads.

VA Software CEO/Founder Larry Augustin Dead at 39, Apparent Suicide
by ASSOCIATED PRESS
VA Software (LNUX) CEO, president and founder Larry Augustin was found dead in his home in Fremont, Calif. early this morning. The death was an apparent suicide, caused by a close-range shotgun blast to the face and head. He was 39 years old.
Police reports indicate that strewn about the room in which Augustin carried out his fate were empty cartons of ramen noodles and discount bulk oat bags. His house was bare of any furniture or furnishings of any worth, and his garage which once held several classic cars was emptied. An autopsy revealed several thousand VA Software stock certificates, neatly rolled and bundled, in Augustin's rectum. Police are investigating how the five-inch-wide bundle appeared in Augustin's lower intestine unlubricated without any sign of strain on his anal sphincter. Also discovered was an abnormally high concentration of dye in Augustin's bloodstream, which was determined to be the main component of "ledger red" ink.
VA Software, which at different times has been called VA Linux Systems, VA Linux and VA Systems, has seen financial difficulties of late. Most likely to be soon delisted from NASDAQ, the company shares a struggle for profitability with many other dot-bomb era corporations whose business plans include the line "???" directly before "PROFIT !!". VA Software child companies, such as geek weblog Slashdot.org and Star Wars fan site Sourceforge have felt the pinch of the economic downturn.
Augustin is survived by his domestic partner and two adopted children. -

Re:Why can't you people get it through your heads?
What are they going to do to me if I use freenet
They will probably decide to sue everyone on Freenet, and we can thank you for it. Why don't you post some child pr0n and plan terr0r attacks using Freenet as well. Then you can make sure the fascist regimes will hunt every Freenet user down. The RIAA doesn't care if they sue or screw over innocent people, so broadcasting their crap on Freenet will just end up screwing everyone on the entire network.
Freenet works if the users are just criticizing politicians/companies or doing things which are considered mildly unacceptable, but when many users go into things which are blatantly illegal or does things which pisses off an entire government or factional group, then the network is screwed. They'll just track down every Freenet user and mow them down--at least within countries they operate.
The "entertainment" cartel is smoking some serious SCO crack. They are so bad, for a minute, I thought this story was real. At this point, it wouldn't be suprizing if the story was true.

K5?
you can move to K5
What does Scoop have to do with anything?
I hadn't previously seen "K5" referring to Kerberos 5.

Re:Inferiority complex?Thank you. Contrary to the moderation, I didn't intended it as a troll. I was expressing an opinion in the hope that it would stimulate an intelligent and enlightening discussion on the topic. My mistake? I posted it here rather than at Kuro5shin. You see, Slashdot isn't a place for dissenting opinions. It's a place for posting repetitive (tired) jokes and agreeing with the opinion de jour.
I've long thought that Slashdot should add 'provocative' as a moderation choice. Some posts may make people uncomfortable while raising good points. This will probably get moderated as a troll too (if anyone with moderation points get this deep into an aging story, which I doubt). Truth hurts.
PS- The part about Kuro5hin WAS a troll.
-
I love the idea, but . . .
. . . how do we vet the legitimacy of the information posted?
The article was much too short to provide detail, but the one concern I have is that posting reports of suspicious government activity doesn't guarantee its truth. Will there be some type of mechanism that will allow peer review (just like /. or kuro5hin) to determine an item's validity? Otherwise, it just becomes another rumour mill a la F---ed Company, of little value to anyone except the tin-foil hat crowd.

grow some ballsyou spend the entire review saying this book sucks more than not, and conclude "I wouldn't recommend it to anyone" but still give it an 8. I agree with the substance of the review, but wth, 8???
k5 seems to be in it's usual state these days right now (down) but when it's back up, check out the amusing poll they had a while ago. ("Most overrated geek icon.") Guess what won by a landslide? Hint: it's a cartoon.

Re:Why?
You can burn to a CD, then rip it to the unrestricted format of your choice.
Of course, there's still no reason to use it. Why give your money to RIAA members when many sites offer free, legal MP3 downloads? Most of the money you spend on i-tunes goes towards the RIAA's campaign against freedom. -
Re:interesting methodologyIt sounds like these spammers really have their shit together. There are plenty of legitimate websites, such as Kuro5hin.org, that can barely keep their servers up for more than one day at a time.
Perhaps spammers are crackers aren't as stupid as we all thought.

What about playing _Go_ with God?
On a related note, here's a short story that appeared on Kuro5hin about paying an infinite game of Go with a horribly wounded angel.
Deals with the concept of NP-hard problems, too! -

Would be nice if you pointed to the original article.

For the great unwashed
A true professional would already know all about documentation, but for those who don't, hereare some references .
-
well....
first, label everything clearly. 2nd, document what you've done. print documents, in case there's no computer around to read them on. screenshots or logs of what you typed and have done is better than handwritten notebooks. 3rd, train someone in the Why and How of a system and it's response and they'll figure out the What on their own, usually. also, check out this article at kuro5hin and then do what seems more useful.

Re:"With Folded Hands"You might also be interested in a story mentioned here a few months ago: The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect.
Very well-written story about a computer which "comes to life" through its ability to manipulate the world, and decides to protect humans such that noone can ever die. So the humans play "suicide games" knowing they'll be brought back at the last moment. Excellent story.

it's about time.
This isn't new; many people have had this idea before, including me, but this is the first time I've ever seen a state actually trying to *do* something about it.
California, I admit that I haven't trusted your judgement that much of late, what with your energy scandals, your various boneheaded court decisions, and currently the California recall... but I support and applaud your efforts to hold Microsoft accountable to the consumer again. Who knows, maybe we'll see a Microsoft recall next. -
Dumpster Diving?
So how does this affect dumpster diving? I know that I've gotten some nice computers out of the trash, as well as other semi-working electronics. I don't understand why someone would throw out a computer with a blown power supply instead of asking their friendly neighborhood geek what the problem is.
Of course, finding a 2 or 3 generation old computer was more useful before you could get a NAT router for under $50. "Back in my day, we had to install Linux on the drive to build a router... and we liked it!" -

The quote is from Uncle Stoat Warbler, 6 Aug. 2003, directed at Burst.net, which is where my servers are located, so, yes, it was a threat against me, and can be found here.

Why go after Terry Gilsenan? Any group that affects commerce in such a negative way must be held accountable. We're not talking about the CIA or MI-5, SPEWS is simply a good idea gone horribly out of control. -

Re:Helpless?
and then send myself the email from there.
Of course, spammers use these sites to send spam too. And guess what? The spam is suddenly coming from *your* site! You're the spammer!I raise all hell when I find a comunity based site that does this...
Like Usenet?Like mailing lists?
Like Kuro5hin ?
Like Fark ?
Like Freshmeat ?
/. doesn't seem to allow you to send a private message or email to a user at all based on a comment, but if they get a story submitted, it almost always gives their email address right there. It's often spam-proofed, but not in any difficult to decipher manner.Looks like you've got a lot of `all hell' to raise. And I wasn't even looking hard -- I was just going down my bookmarks.
In fact, I can only think of one site that does what you've suggested -- Ebay. They used to give email addresses, but now let you email through their system instead. They may say it was done to cut down on spam, but I'm pretty sure the real reason is to keep track of the emails sent, so they can make sure that people aren't offering to buy stuff outside of the system (depriving Ebay of their commission), `interfering' with auctions (like telling the top bidder that the seller is a crook), stuff like that.

Sad News -- Robert Palmer dead at 54I was just listening to talk radio and heard that rock singer Robert Palmer has died of a heart attack at age 54. His suave image and slick videos helped define the MTV image in the 80's, and I'm sure he'll be missed by many music fans around the world.
Please, please. Get with the program! It's supposed to go like this:
I just heard some sad news on talk radio - Brit Rock singer/composer Robert Palmer was found dead in Paris this morning. There weren't any more details. I'm sure everyone in the Slashdot community will miss him - even if you didn't enjoy his work, there's no denying his contributions to popular culture. Truly a British icon.
Here's an example; here's another; and this is a third. I suppose you can paraphrase a little, as in this example.
But the format must follow the traditions of Slashdot:- start with "I just heard some sad news on talk radio"; "listening" doesn't scan corectly
- follow with the 'no details' bit, even if there were details
- then the 'contributions' sentence, qualified with the "even if you didn't enjoy" (possibly with "agree" substituting for "enjoy")
- and ending with the "Truly a(n) _______ icon.
Just as a sonnet's not an Italian sonnet unless an eight line octet precedes a six line sestet, it's just not Slashdot poetry unless you follow the traditional format. - start with "I just heard some sad news on talk radio"; "listening" doesn't scan corectly

Microsoft Dropped the Ball?
Now that MS has dropped the ball on the XML Office front,
I'm curious, how did Microsoft drop the ball with respect to other XML-based Office suites? The linked article points to a report that the ability to import user-defined XML formats into a form that can be understood by the primary Office products is an Enterprise feature. However loading or saving documents using a default XML format is in the base versions of Office and in fact was in the last version of Office given that Excel had a documented XML Spreadsheet Format.
Is anybody out there writing Perl/Java/whatever programs to take advantage of StarOffice XML?
Not me but I am writing C# apps that make use of Excel's XML format. I wrote about using XSLT on the Excel XMLSS format in my blog a few months ago when I had to update date values in certain columns. I also posted the XSLT stylesheet.
Disclaimer: I work on the XML team at Microsoft but not directly with Microsoft Office.
