Re:MORE SLASHDOT CENSORSHIP!I'd mod you up but i lost my powers after that post.
eggtroll posted
Slashdot editors once again continue their campaign of censorship. It has come to Egg Troll's attention that Jamie "Security Through Obscurity" McCarthy has sent a Cease and Desist order to our beloved Trollaxor for a diary entry posted on his website that detailed a javascript exploit to Slashcode.
The hypocracy in doing this is incredible. For a site that routinely condems companies that attempt such heavy-handed tactics shows that Slashdot is almost as morally bankrupt as VA/Systems soon will be. I would expect such tactics from the Church of Scientology or a Fortune 500 company. I guess Slashdot has learned: "If you can't beat them, join them!"
To make matters extra special, Jamie updated Slashdot's Slashcode, yet didn't release details of this exploit to other sites running Slashcode. Guess its only important for Slashdot to look out for number one!
Is the imminent collapse of their parent company causing them all this stress? Or maybe its years of using that substandard open source software. Whatever the case, this is one of the slimiest things Slashdot has done since the First Troll Post Investigation.
For those wondering the code in question can be found here

---" Reposting again. Managed to get up to 50 Karma, posted ONE pro-Troll message, and got mod-bombed. This diatribe was truer than I thought. CLiT, I shall be honored if you accept me as a member!"
Yeah, if you post something that doesn't get approved with the group-think of the Nazi -Moderators, you're modded to hell and back. I posted an article about being for the Spammer in the recent article and explaining why I dontt want congress involved. I was on topic and everything else, but some fuck-wad Thought I was a troll. Guess he doesn't have the mental capicity to understand other viewpoints. Still, Ringbarer, if you think you got mod-bombed, talk to "negativekarmanow tm" about his post.
This moderation evidently shows that MANY people wanted to see it, however, the thread was being bitch-slapped by moderators applying -1 to every article continously. Here's the totals...
Moderation Totals: Offtopic=377, Flamebait=4, Troll=27, Redundant=5, Insightful=98, Interesting=205, Informative=49, Funny=12, Overrated=11, Underrated=63, Total=851to every article continously. Here's the totals...
Before modding me down, if this isn't news, WHY WOULD K5 treat this as a story??? Perhaps editors, you shouldn't CENSOR people. You're who we look up to.. -
The Linux Gay Conspiracy by pwpbotDue to the efforts of the Slash crew, I have been reduced to a crapflood bot. Stay tuned for more updates once they come in.
It has come to my attention that the entire Linux community is a hotbed of so called 'alternative sexuality,' which includes anything from hedonistic orgies to homosexuality to pedophilia.
What better way of demonstrating this than by looking at the hidden messages contained within the names of some of Linux's most outspoken advocates:
- Linus Torvalds is an anagram of slit anus or VD 'L,' clearly referring to himself by the first initial.
- Richard M. Stallman, spokespervert for the Gaysex's Not Unusual 'movement' is an anagram of mans cram thrill ad.
- Alan Cox is barely an anagram of anal cox which is just so filthy and unchristian it unnerves me.
I'm sure that Eric S. Raymond, composer of the satanic homosexual propaganda diatribe The Cathedral and the Bizarre, is probably an anagram of something queer, but we don't need to look that far as we know he's always shoving a gun up some poor little boy's rectum. Update: Eric S. Raymond is actually an anagram for secondary rim and cord in my arse. It just goes to show you that he is indeed queer.
Update the Second: It is also documented that Evil Sicko Gaymond is responsible for a nauseating piece of code called Fetchmail, which is obviously sinister sodomite slang for 'Felch Male' -- a disgusting practise. For those not in the know, 'felching' is the act performed by two perverts wherein one sucks their own post-coital ejaculate out of the other's rectum. In fact, it appears that the dirty Linux faggots set out to undermine the good Republican institution of e-mail, turning it into 'e-male.'
As far as Richard 'Master' Stallman goes, that filthy fudge-packer was actually quoted on leftist commie propaganda site Salon.com as saying the following: 'I've been resistant to the pressure to conform in any circumstance,' he says. 'It's about being able to question conventional wisdom,' he asserts. 'I believe in love, but not monogamy,' he says plainly.
And this isn't a made up troll bullshit either! He actually stated this tripe, which makes it obvious that he is trying to politely say that he's a flaming homo slut!
Speaking about 'flaming,' who better to point out as a filthy chutney ferret than Slashdot's very own self-confessed pederast Jon Katz. Although an obvious deviant anagram cannot be found from his name, he has already confessed, nay boasted of the homosexual perversion of corrupting the innocence of young children. To quote from the article linked:
'I've got a rare kidney disease,' I told her. 'I have to go to the bathroom a lot. You can come with me if you want, but it takes a while. Is that okay with you? Do you want a note from my doctor?'
Is this why you were touching your penis in the cinema, Jon? And letting the other boys touch it too?
We should also point out that Jon Katz refers to himself as 'Slashdot's resident Gasbag.' Is there any more doubt? For those fortunate few who aren't aware of the list of homosexual terminology found inside the Linux 'Sauce Code,' a 'Gasbag' is a pervert who gains sexual gratification from having a thin straw inserted into his urethra (or to use the common parlance, 'piss-pipe'), then his homosexual lover blows firmly down the straw to inflate his scrotum. This is, of course, when he's not busy violating the dignity and copyright of posters to Slashdot by gathering together their postings and publishing them en masse to further his twisted and manipulative journalistic agenda.
Sick, disgusting antichristian perverts, the lot of them.
In addition, many of the Linux distributions (a 'distribution' is the most common way to spread the faggots' wares) are run by faggot groups. The Slackware distro is named after the 'Slack-wear' fags wear to allow easy access to the anus for sexual purposes. Furthermore, Slackware is a close anagram of claw arse, a reference to the homosexual practise of anal fisting. The Mandrake product is run by a group of French faggot satanists, and is named after the faggot nickname for the vibrator. It was also chosen because it is an anagram for dark amen and ram naked, which is what they do.
Another 'distro,' (abbrieviated as such because it sounds a bit like 'Disco,' which is where homosexuals preyed on young boys in the 1970s), is Debian, an anagram of in a bed, which could be considered innocent enough (after all, a bed is both where we sleep and pray), until we realise what other names Debian uses to describe their foul wares. 'Woody' is obvious enough, being a term for the erect male penis, glistening with pre-cum. But far sicker is the phrase 'Frozen Potato' that they use. This filthy term, again found in the secret homosexual 'Sauce Code,' refers to the solo homosexual practice of defecating into a clear polythene bag, shaping the turd into a crude approximation of the male phallus, then leaving it in the freezer overnight until it becomes solid. The practitioner then proceeds to push the frozen 'potato' up his own rectum, squeezing it in and out until his tight young balls erupt in a screaming orgasm.
And Red Hat is secret homo slang for the tip of a penis that is soaked in blood from a freshly violated underage ringpiece.
The fags have even invented special tools to aid their faggotry! For example, the 'supermount' tool was devised to allow deeper penetration, which is good for fags because it gives more pressure on the prostate gland. 'Automount' is used, on the other hand, because Linux users are all fat and gay, and need to mount each other automatically.
The depths of their depravity can be seen in their use of 'mount points.' These are, plainly speaking, the different points of penetration. The main one is obviously
/anus, but there are others. Militant fags even say 'there is no /opt mount point' because for these dirty perverts faggotry is not optional but a way of life.More evidence is in the fact that Linux users say how much they love `man`, even going so far as to say that all new Linux users (who are in fact just innocent heterosexuals indoctrinated by the gay propaganda) should try out `man`. In no other system do users boast of their frequent recourse to a man.
Other areas of the system also show Linux's inherit gayness. For example, people are often told of the 'FAQ,' but how many innocent heterosexual Windows users know what this actually means. The answer is shocking: Faggot Anal Quest: the voyage of discovery for newly converted fags!
Even the title 'Slashdot' originally referred to a homosexual practice. Slashdot of course refers to the popular gay practice of blood-letting. The Slashbots, of course are those super-zealous homosexuals who take this perversion to its extreme by ripping open their anuses, as seen on the site most popular with Slashdot users, the depraved work of Satan, http://www.eff.org/.
The editors of Slashdot also have homosexual names: 'Hemos' is obvious in itself, being one vowel away from 'Homos.' But even more sickening is 'Commander Taco' which sounds a bit like 'Commode in Taco,' filthy gay slang for a pair of spreadeagled buttocks that are caked with excrement. (The best form of lubrication, they insist.) Sometimes, these 'Taco Commodes' have special 'Salsa Sauce' (blood from a ruptured rectum) and 'Cheese' (rancid flakes of penis discharge) toppings. And to make it even worse, Slashdot runs on Apache!
The Apache server, whose use among fags is as prevalent as AIDS, is named after homosexual activity -- as everyone knows, popular faggot band, the Village People, featured an Apache Indian, and it is for him that this gay program is named.
And that's not forgetting the use of patches in the Linux fag world -- patches are used to make the anus accessible for repeated anal sex even after its rupture by a session of fisting.
To summarise: Linux is gay. 'Slash -- Dot' is the graphical description of the space between a young boy's scrotum and anus. And BeOS is for hermaphrodites and disabled 'stumpers.'
FEEDBACK
What worries me is how much you know about what gay people do. I'm scared I actually read this whole thing. I think this post is a good example of the negative effects of Internet usage on people. This person obviously has no social life anymore and had to result to writing something as stupid as this. And actually take the time to do it too. Although... I think it was satire.. blah.. it's early. -- Anonymous Coward, Slashdot
Well, the only reason I know all about this is because I had the misfortune to read the Linux 'Sauce code' once. Although publicised as the computer code needed to get Linux up and running on a computer (and haven't you always been worried about the phrase 'Monolithic Kernel'?), this foul document is actually a detailed and graphic description of every conceivable degrading perversion known to the human race, as well as a few of the major animal species. It has shocked and disturbed me, to the point of needing to shock and disturb the common man to warn them of the impending homo-calypse which threatens to engulf our planet.
You must work for the government. Trying to post the most obscene stuff in hopes that slashdot won't be able to continue or something, due to legal woes. If i ever see your ugly face, i'm going to stick my fireplace poker up your ass, after it's nice and hot, to weld shut that nasty gaping hole of yours. -- Anonymous Coward, Slashdot
Doesn't it give you a hard-on to imagine your thick strong poker ramming it's way up my most sacred of sphincters? You're beyond help, my friend, as the only thing you can imagine is the foul penetrative violation of another man. Are you sure you're not Eric Raymond? The government, being populated by limp-wristed liberals, could never stem the sickening tide of homosexual child molesting Linux advocacy. Hell, they've given NAMBLA free reign for years!
you really should post this logged in. i wish i could remember jebus's password, cuz i'd give it to you. -- mighty jebus, Slashdot
Thank you for your kind words of support. However, this document shall only ever be posted anonymously. This is because the 'Open Sauce' movement is a sham, proposing homoerotic cults of hero worshipping in the name of freedom. I speak for the common man. For any man who prefers the warm, enveloping velvet folds of a woman's vagina to the tight puckered ringpiece of a child. These men, being common, decent folk, don't have a say in the political hypocrisy that is Slashdot culture. I am the unknown liberator.
ROLF LAMO i hate linux FAGGOTS -- Anonymous Coward, Slashdot
We shouldn't hate them, we should pity them for the misguided fools they are... Fanatical Linux zeal-outs need to be herded into camps for re-education and subsequent rehabilitation into normal heterosexual society. This re-education shall be achieved by forcing them to watch repeats of Baywatch until the very mention of Pamela Anderson causes them to fill their pants with healthy heterosexual jism.
Actually, that's not at all how scrotal inflation works. I understand it involves injecting sterile saline solution into the scrotum. I've never tried this, but you can read how to do it safely in case you're interested. (Before you moderate this down, ask yourself honestly -- who are the real crazies -- people who do scrotal inflation, or people who pay $1000+ for a game console?) -- double_h, Slashdot
Well, it just goes to show that even the holy Linux 'sauce code' is riddled with bugs that need fixing. (The irony of Jon Katz not even being able to inflate his scrotum correctly has not been lost on me.) The Linux pervert elite already acknowledge this, with their queer slogan: 'Given enough arms, all rectums are shallow.' And anyway, the PS2 sucks major cock and isn't worth the money. Intellivision forever!
dude did u used to post on msnbc's nt bulletin board now that u are doing anti-gay posts u also need to start in with anti-black stuff too c u in church -- Anonymous Coward, Slashdot
For one thing, whilst Linux is a cavalcade of queer propaganda masquerading as the future of computing, NT is used by people who think nothing better of encasing their genitals in quick setting plaster then going to see a really dirty porno film, enjoying the restriction enforced onto them. Remember, a wasted arousal is a sin in the eyes of the Catholic church. Clearly, the only god-fearing Christian operating system in existence is CP/M -- The Christian Program Monitor. All computer users should immediately ask their local pastor to install this fine OS onto their systems. It is the only route to salvation.
Secondly, this message is for every man. Computers know no colour. Not only that, but one of the finest websites in the world is maintained by a Black Man . Now fuck off you racist donkey felcher.
And don't forget that slashdot was written in Perl, which is just too close to 'Pearl Necklace' for comfort.... oh wait; that's something all you heterosexuals do.... I can't help but wonder how much faster the trolls could do First-Posts on this site if it were redone in PHP... I could hand-type dynamic HTML pages faster than Perl can do them. -- phee, Slashdot
Although there is nothing unholy about the fine heterosexual act of ejaculating between a woman's breasts, squirting one's load up towards her neck and chin area, it should be noted that Perl (standing for Pansies Entering Rectums Locally) is also close to 'Pearl Monocle,' 'Pearl Nosering,' and the ubiquitous 'Pearl Enema.'
One scary thing about Perl is that it contains hidden homosexual messages. Take the following code: LWP::Simple -- It looks innocuous enough, doesn't it? But look at the line closely: There are two colons next to each other! As Larry 'Balls to the' Wall would openly admit in the Perl Documentation, Perl was designed from the ground up to indoctrinate it's programmers into performing unnatural sexual acts -- having two colons so closely together is clearly a reference to the perverse sickening act of 'colon kissing,' whereby two homosexual queers spread their buttocks wide, pressing their filthy torn sphincters together. They then share small round objects like marbles or golfballs by passing them from one rectum to another using muscle contraction alone. This is also referred to in programming 'circles' as 'Parameter Passing.'
And PHP stands for Perverted Homosexual Penetration. Didn't you know?
Thank you for your valuable input on this. I am sure you will be never forgotten. BTW: Did I mention that this could be useful in terraforming Mars? Mars rulaa. -- Eimernase, Slashdot
Well, I don't know about terraforming Mars, but I do know that homosexual Linux Advocates have been probing Uranus for years.
That's inspiring. Keep up the good work, AC. May God in his wisdom grant you the strength to bring the plain honest truth to this community, and make it pure again. Yours, Cerberus. -- Anonymous Coward, Slashdot
*sniff* That brings a tear to my eye. Thank you once more for your kind support. I have taken faith in the knowledge that I am doing the Good Lord's work, but it is encouraging to know that I am helping out the common man here.
However, I should be cautious about revealing your name 'Cerberus' on such a filthy den of depravity as Slashdot. It is a well known fact that the 'Kerberos' documentation from Microsoft is a detailed manual describing, in intimate, exacting detail, how to sexually penetrate a variety of unwilling canine animals; be they domesticated, wild, or mythical. Slashdot posters have taken great pleasure in illegally spreading this documentation far and wide, treating it as an 'extension' to the Linux 'Sauce Code,' for the sake of 'interoperability.' (The slang term they use for nonconsensual intercourse -- their favourite kind.)
In fact, sick twisted Linux deviants are known to have LAN parties, (Love of Anal Naughtiness, needless to say.), wherein they entice a stray dog, known as the 'Samba Mount,' into their homes. Up to four of these filth-sodden blasphemers against nature take turns to plunge their erect, throbbing, uncircumcised members, conkers-deep, into the rectum, mouth, and other fleshy orifices of the poor animal. Eventually, the 'Samba Mount' collapses due to 'overload,' and needs to be 'rebooted.' (i.e., kicked out into the street, and left to fend for itself.) Many Linux users boast about their 'uptime' in such situations.
Inspiring stuff! If only all trolls were this quality! -- Anonymous Coward, Slashdot
If only indeed. You can help our brave cause by moderating this message up as often as possible. I recommend '+1, Underrated,' as that will protect your precious Karma in Metamoderation. Only then can we break through the glass ceiling of Homosexual Slashdot Culture. Is it any wonder that the new version of Slashcode has been christened 'Bender'???
If we can get just one of these postings up to at least '+1,' then it will be archived forever! Others will learn of our struggle, and join with us in our battle for freedom!
It's pathetic you've spent so much time writing this. -- Anonymous Coward, Slashdot
I am compelled to document the foulness and carnal depravity that is Linux, in order that we may prepare ourselves for the great holy war that is to follow. It is my solemn duty to peel back the foreskin of ignorance and apply the wire brush of enlightenment.
As with any great open-source project, you need someone asking this question, so I'll do it. When the hell is version 2.0 going to be ready?!?! -- Anonymous Coward, Slashdot
I could make an arrogant, childish comment along the lines of 'Every time someone asks for 2.0, I won't release it for another 24 hours,' but the truth of the matter is that I'm quite nervous of releasing a 'number two,' as I can guarantee some filthy shit-slurping Linux pervert would want to suck it straight out of my anus before I've even had chance to wipe.
I desperately want to suck your monolithic kernel, you sexy hunk, you. -- Anonymous Coward, Slashdot
I sincerely hope you're Natalie Portman.
Dude, nothing on slashdot larger than 3 paragraphs is worth reading. Try to distill the message, whatever it was, and maybe I'll read it. As it is, I have to much open source software to write to waste even 10 seconds of precious time. 10 seconds is all its gonna take M$ to whoop Linux's ass. Vigilence is the price of Free (as in libre -- from the fine, frou frou French language) Software. Hack on fellow geeks, and remember: Friday is Bouillabaisse day except for heathens who do not believe that Jesus died for their sins. Those godless, oil drench, bearded sexist clowns can pull grits from their pantaloons (another fine, fine French word) and eat that. Anyway, try to keep your message focused and concise. For concision is the soul of derision. Way. -- Anonymous Coward, Slashdot
What the fuck?
I've read your gay conspiracy post version 1.3.0 and I must say I'm impressed. In particular, I appreciate how you have managed to squeeze in a healthy dose of the latent homosexuality you gay-bashing homos tend to be full of. Thank you again. -- Anonymous Coward, Slashdot
Well bugger me!
ooooh honey. how insecure are you!!! wann a little massage from deare bruci. love you -- Anonymous Coward, Slashdot
Fuck right off!
IMPORTANT: This message needs to be heard (Not HURD, which is an acronym for 'Huge Unclean Rectal Dilator') across the whole community, so it has been released into the Public Domain. You know, that licence that we all had before those homoerotic crypto-fascists came out with the GPL (Gay Penetration License) that is no more than an excuse to see who's got the biggest feces-encrusted cock. I would have put this up on Freshmeat, but that name is known to be a euphemism for the tight rump of a young boy.
Come to think of it, the whole concept of 'Source Control' unnerves me, because it sounds a bit like 'Sauce Control,' which is a description of the homosexual practice of holding the base of the cock shaft tightly upon the point of ejaculation, thus causing a build up of semenal fluid that is only released upon entry into an incision made into the base of the receiver's scrotum. And 'Open Sauce' is the act of ejaculating into another mans face or perhaps a biscuit to be shared later. Obviously, 'Closed Sauce' is the only Christian thing to do, as evidenced by the fact that it is what Cathedrals are all about.
Contributors: (although not to the eternal game of 'soggy biscuit' that open 'sauce' development has become) Anonymous Coward, Anonymous Coward, phee, Anonymous Coward, mighty jebus, Anonymous Coward, Anonymous Coward, double_h, Anonymous Coward, Eimernase, Anonymous Coward, Anonymous Coward, Anonymous Coward, Anonymous Coward, Anonymous Coward, Anonymous Coward, Anonymous Coward, Anonymous Coward. Current changes: This version sent to FreeWIPO by 'Bring BackATV' as plain text. Reformatted everything, added all links back in (that we could match from the previous version), many new ones (Slashbot bait links). Even more spelling fixed. Who wrote this thing, CmdrTaco himself?
Previous changes: Yet more changes added. Spelling fixed. Feedback added. Explanation of 'distro' system. 'Mount Point' syntax described. More filth regarding `man` and Slashdot. Yet more fucking spelling fixed. 'Fetchmail' uncovered further. More Slashbot baiting. Apache exposed. Distribution licence at foot of document.

The future of other news sites.
I wonder if sites like
/. will ever go that way (charging a subscription fee). Currently my other favorite site kuro5hin offers a voluntary subscription service that offers extra (useless?) features that a free account doesn't have. I have been happy to see that /. has not gone in a similar direction but I wonder if it is inevitable.
I have a site and it is extremely cheap to run ($10/month on my friends server). I know my site doesn't have the bandwidth consumption or content that a site like the New York Times or /. has but is it really that expensive to run a site like that? I guess the NYT is much more concerned about turning a profit. -
R. T. Jones's SSTBlended wing bodies actually go back to the Horten Brothers prior to WW II. A look at this page gives some perspective on where the work for Boeing's current design originated. Note that the work immediately prior to the work at Boeing was carried out at Stanford University and NASA Ames with Ilan Kroo.
Dr. Kroo was one of the only academics to work closely with the inventor of an even more radical concept called the Oblique All Wing (aka Oblique Flying Wing) Supersonic Transport. The OAW SST concept originated in the 1940s with supersonics pioneer Robert Theo Jones (who preferred to be called "RT Jones").
I became interested in Jones' concept when an article (very similar to the one available online from Hiller Museum of Aviation) appeared in "The West" magazine in the early 90s. The thing that hooked me about the idea was that RT Jones had originated the supersonics models for swept wings used for all of aviation and had come to the conclusion that:
- The optimal supersonic wing was an ellipse with no body that tilted into the wind more and more as it went faster and faster -- an amazingly simple and elegant concept.
- The price per passenger mile for a trans-Pacific flight would be no more than for a 747 even though the flight time would be half.
Having hooked me at the time I was most active in aerospace politics I decided to look into why the supersonic wind tunnel at NASA Ames wasn't being utilized by the Stanford crew under the ultimate mentorship of RT Jones (who it was obvious to me, was nearing the end of his functioning life). As it turns out there were some problems with NASA HQ not wanting to have confusing signals sent to Congress about which direction NASA was going to go with its High Speed Civil Transport program. There were funds at stake here. At one point NASA Ames attempted to take a small part of its "discretionary" budget and fund the supersonic wind tunnel runs of a model of the OAW SST, but when it did so NASA HQ got "wind" of it and not only forbade the research but docked NASA Ames an equal amount of money in the next year's "discretionary" budget.
When I heard about this, I became angry.
I plunked down some dough and flew RT down to meet with Congressman Ron Packard (R 43rd district CA) and discuss the situation. We got some other Congressmen to look at the situation a bit as well. The real clincher didn't happen until I discovered the person with the most intimate knowledge of the supersonic modeling equations was going to work for Airbus after having been trained by RT Jones at Stanford. This gave me the leverage I needed to push the "American Competitiveness" buttons with the Congressmen -- and I did just that.
This had repercussions.
The initial result was a specific line item in the NASA bill. This was to send a signal to NASA HQ that they weren't to stop the supersonic windtunnel testing from going forward at NASA Ames -- that the OAW SST model from Stanford and RT Jones would be experimentally tested against the equations. The second result was that someone's head was going to roll for letting the cat out of the bag about NASA HQ's bad behavior. I think the guy who got demoted was Tom Gregory even though he wasn't the source of the dirt -- so I have to apologize to him for the consequences of my rather heavy-handed politics -- but the consequences for the testing were at least a little good.
RT Jones was pretty sick the last time I talked to him -- and discouraged. The fact is he was within a few years of dying of a prolonged illness. He didn't think it was worth pursuing the OAW SST anymore -- that a subsonic 747 style jet could be made more comfortable for the long flight. It was sad hearing him talk that way about his brain child but it was understandable given the life-long struggle for acceptance of the idea and his weakened state. Nevertheless, the idea remains an intriguing if not viable one -- and someday I hope there is at least a FedEx next-business-day robotic package OAW SST fueled by methane -- the system I first thought would be viable.

Shut up fuckwad....
...just kidding...slashdot is troll land though. I vent over here, and try to keep my more meaningful intellectual property elsewhere.
-
Re:What does this mean for the industry as a wholethose who try to make a living selling anything that has to do with intellectual property
Slashdot people oppose people trying to make a living because they think they have a God-given right to take something which cost thousands of man hours of time and money to make, and steal it without compensating the investors who put so much money in to make the art in question. Leeches.
The reason I don't like Slashdot as much as I used to is because it isn't democratic. Moderations are anonymous. It is well known that the owners of Slashdot have the maturity of a 12-year-old who has ops on a channel in IRC; they whine about censorship they see anywhere besides Slashdot then turn around and censor posts they do not like here.
Kuro5hin looks promising; moderations do not matter as much, are not anonymous, and the process of posting articles on the front page is democratically decided.
Any other reasonable Slashdot alternatives?
I see these web pages as being the MUDs of the 21st century. Just as the 1980s and 1990s had the multi user dungeons, where most of them had few players, and only a few had a large community, web boards are the 1990s and 21st century's way of having an online community for people as pathetic and without life as myself.
Slashdot is popular because it was one of the first. I am getting the feeling, however, that Slashdot is slwoly starting to lose its user base and that people are starting to persue alternatives. Slashcode is obsolete; Scoop handles huge web communities in a more democratic fashion.
I really wish VA Linux (or whatever they are called today) would hurry up and go out of business so that Slashdot would die, and the large community which Slashdot has--slashdot's only asset--would go to a web site better managed for a community of Slashdot's size.
I am obviously posting this anonymously; I have a four-digit user ID which I have had for over four years that I don't want to see get bitchslapped. I know that the people who run Slashdot do not have the basic emotional maturity to handle any kind of criticism.
-
Of course, look at k5The handwriting was on the wall when they adopted the subscription model. Most people aren't willing or even able to pay for content
Of course when a site develops a real sense of loyalty and community, simply asking for a donation can yield a healthy sum of money - kuro5hin.org, for example, raised over $37,000 in two days.
While such a model is obviously not going to cover Salon's $11 million annual expense, it is an intriguing idea. Granted, I doubt it would work for Salon, it seems like such a proposition would work only for tightly-knit community oriented sites.

Go to Kuro5hin!
Sometimes (often!) I wish Slashdot let you moderate the articles and not just the posts; this one would have been (-1, Troll) very quickly.
That what are you doing on Slashdot? Go to Kuro5hin! ;-) -
Re:Wanted: moderation for the articles
It's called Kuro5hin
. -
Re:very nice but can it overtake DivX?Very simple. Set threshold to -1. Now we see following:
- First musical post! -1
- Penis hoooooo!! -1
- post for osama -1
- very nice but can it overtake DivX? +3
The trend is clear - the first on-topic message is moderated up regardless of how dumb it is. I don't have an exhaustive explanation, but I guess it has to do with the deluge of off-topic posts and the deficit of the moderation points. Having one point, 3 offtopic posts and one on-topic post, it's "cheaper" to moderate up the on-topic post than to give the idiots what they deserve.
That is no mod point deficit on kuro5hin, and that results in much better moderation. It's darn hard to stay near 5 points if everybody can rate you down. And it's a good thing IMHO.

Re:Duh
I hope popups and cookie abuse and all that crap is coming to an end, but I don't think that spells the end of doing business on the internet, which I am not opposed to. Think of this, over at kuro5shin Rusty puts out a call for some emergency funds--and it works! Meanwhile portal sites like Yahoo are getting uglier and more useless by the week, "content providers" like Salon and nytimes.com just don't seem to ever learn. Sooner or later I think the sites that don't get on the cluetrain will go under. Even the giants, because they cannot sustain a losing business model forever. It will take time, but for those that can stick it out, there will be financial rewards for those outfits who understand the internet and work with it. Well, that's my hope.

Bad UIKuro5hin has an article about the new Visual Studio.NET, where they found about 3 widgets in the same application. If MS can't follow it's own GUI Guidelines, who will?
Also, there is a great place for the bad UI design at The Interface Hall Of Shame.

Ah yes, that would account for people being arrested for trying to buy sale items at the advertised price. Give me the commission-based salespeople anytime.

Do you have any skillz other than Copy and Paste?
I know you wrote it the first time as well, but I think its just karma whoring on your part.

Ya think we might, one day, get a non-inflammatory response to the ADTI paper?
If you want one so badly, how about writing it?
It would probably make for a great story on the other site.

Some suggestions for letters/faxesUnlike the article states, the debate on the RIPA ammendment has been delayed from Tuesday 18th June until Monday 24th June (see Stand.org.uk). This now leaves you time to fax, or better still, write to your MP.
Here are some ideas and examples of letters that you could use to base the letter/faxes to your MP. However please, please do not just copy and paste significant portions of the letter into your one. This does more harm than good since then the MPs will just ignore both of them and think that you don't care about the issue enought to write your own letter.

You really don't get itThis means using this career discontinuity to bone up on the latest-n-greatest in the hot sectors of the industry, to offer a better chance of a finding another great job.
Buzzword compliance won't make you a better programmer, and if you go work for an employer that hires based on such then expect seriously inept coworkers.
If you have a good grounding in CS principles (algorithm efficiency, data structures - linked lists, trees, use of pointers) plus a couple of representative programming languages (C or C++, and perhaps some higher level language like perl or sh) and can go from a problem description to a clean design and readable, documented code - then technologies with new names are unimportant. If you don't, then you'll be playing catch-up all the days of your life and still be woefully bereft of "clue."
Take XML (as in "take my wife - please"
:). It's just HTML except you get to invent the tags. There are some complications (W3C comes out with a new XML standard daily) but most of them can be ignored. Anyone that's read this paragraph can now put "XML" on their resume, but what's the point? Similarly, once you learn one structured or OOP or functional language, picking up another is easy; learn one RPC system (SUN RPC, CORBA, COM/DCOM, .NET) and the rest are, for the most part, isomorphic. Here's an article that I wrote a little while ago that might be of assistance.

Plagiarism and Bad Writing
First, as an AC posted below, this post was lifted in its entirety from kuro5hin.
Second, Jefferson had nothing to do with writing the US Constitution. -
Not me.Slashdot is and has always been an advocacy site, and has never prentended to be anything else.
It presents the GNU/Linux and free software side, which is a small step towards bringing balance, as we do not have the big advertisement budgets to buy editorial good will, or money to order favorable rewievs from "the customer is always right" analysis companies.
What I am getting tired of is the the people who whine that slashdot is not Ars Technica or kuro5hin, both excellent web places with a different focus than slahsdot.
What about the fact that we STILL don't really take advantage of gfx hardware for 2D presentation?
What do you mean "we", white man? I have "taken advantage of" 2D gfx hardware under Unix for longer than slashdot (or Linux) has existed.or the fact that fonts still look like ass?
They fonts don't look "like ass" on my screen. I guess what you want is anti-aliasing. The free technology for that is awailable, it is just a question of installing it. Maybe your OS distributor have done it for you in a sufficiently recent version. -
Re:Yes, WE COVERED THIS WEEKS AGO
Yeah, that's called kuro5hin. Slashdot is Malda's site and he can post what he wants when he wants to as many times as he wants. He has stated this several times. If you want a site where your opinion counts, go somewhere else.

Re:Well done to the team (again) but..Slash's HTML is completely customizable. Assumming you can get a good XHTML+CSS layout, it shouldn't be hard to integrate it into
/.A sorta-relevant example - Scoop, a Slashlike blogging tool which normally uses tables, can be used to make very nice CSS pages. The same thing could be done to Slash, except it would probably break NS4 compatibility.

Re:If the community is involved
Just look at Kuro5hin.org
... it is not based on slashdot, but IMHO, that's a good thing. It manages to keep a pretty high S/N ratio even though people have never met. (Actually, some people, mostly in the UK do get together on the weekends, all organized through the site)
It attracts some seriously interesting journalistic content, and to my knowledge, noone has ever been paid for writing a story.

Re:Where is Microsoft ?"There is no floating point math necessary for Vorbis. The standard library uses it, but it's perfectly possible to write a fixed-point implementaion. In fact, Xiph does have a fixed-point version, which they are planning to license to player manufacturers."
I stand corrected. I got the floating-point information from a K5 article referenced in a slashdot story from a while back.

Re:"Slashdot style" is flawed, but learn from it
In other words, use Scoop.

Use drupal
I am not a developer neither a paid promoter of Drupal, but I think it has what you need.
It's a news system, pretty much like Slashdot. The major difference is the submission queue, like Scoop that runs Kuro5hin, and anyone can rate comments.
Slashcode, which runs Slashdot, is better for targetted news, IMHO. The selective karma system allows wiser users to rate comments. For a wider audience website, I think you need to give more freedom of choice to your users.
Oh, and Drupal also allows users to build blogs, it has a news feed script, collaborative book and a forum. It has a wider scope.
About the specifics of your problem, yes, I do think blogging can be useful for local newspaper. The citizens will get to know each other, and feel like they were part of a community. I would say go for it. A news script performs the tasks that you want, and if you can enhance the community spirit of your users, better. -

Re:You're wrong.Bill Gates is nothing like a valky
valkyries aren't neccessarily loud and fat. They were beautiful women. They became known as loud and fat as a result of the hefty opera singers who played the part of the valkyries in wagner's operas.
but that being said, i'd still say that bill gates does not resemble a beautiful woman by any stretch of the imagination. Ballmer doesn't either, but maybe you remember that he did demonstrate his musical talent by dancing. possibly not what wagner had in mind. -
Do it!
I've posted this already to kuro5hin, but it can't hurt to repeat my comments to a possibly wider audience. A few sample letters are also here.
If you're like me, you'll find writing to your MP about matters like this very rewarding. Saying that, I neglected to write or fax when the RIP bill first came up, despite my intentions to do so.
I last wrote (dead tree, rather than fax) to my MP at the time regarding Higher Education funding (at the request of my old University), and got a nice reply back saying he'd deal with it in due course. Subsequently, I received a pp'd letter saying he'd contacted the appropriate people.
Ok, it changed nothing - higher education is still poorly funded - but I felt I'd done 'my bit'. Multiply that out, and it could have an effect. Although with the almost dictatorial goverment system we have, it's hard to imagine enough Labour MP's rebelling against a 3-line whip to reject the amendment.
It makes a lot more sense to write something you have thought about, rather than copy/pasting somebody else's letter. If the same MP (well, secretary) receives a few similair messages through the same format (ie. fax), they IMNSHO are (even though they shouldn't) more likely to discount your views.
Different letters, especially if they are dead-tree compliant (come on, how many tech savy MP's have you ever seen or heard from?) go so much further.
So do it, people. This extension of power is extreme, and deserves a letter writing campaign and far more attention.
So:
# Write to your MP. It'll only take a few minutes to write it, print it, sign it, and send it.
# Write again after a few weeks if you've not heard back.
# Forward the link to this story (when it hits the front page or sections) to your friends.
# Mention it to friends at the pub. It's ridiculous, and i'd be startled if anybody - even the non-techies in your circle of friends - agree it makes sense for these organisations to have this amount of power.
# Check that newspapers are giving this coverage.
# Write letters to newspapers on the subject, expressing your feelings.
None of this takes a huge amount of time. It's worth it, and you'll feel a lot better for doing it.
And if anything, it might start to pursuade the government and media that techy's can actual get themselves organised into a politicial pressure
group.
Maybe. Perhaps.
Mmmmm.
Well, one step at a time, then, eh?

ITS OFFICIAL!!Slashdot is now in the hands of the trolls. All non-trolls should now move over to a much better site.
Thank you. -
Re:How is this news for nerds?
Honestly, after seeing the kind of shit a "democratic story acceptance system" breeds, I think we're better off with cmdrtaco and all his faults. Stories on kuro5hin are frequently killed for trivial things like a single capitalization error or a split infinitive. While I'm something of a grammar nazi myself, I find this ridiculous. If you'd like democratic story submission, go there and see for yourself how shitty it is.
Personally, I would like it if Michael stopped posting stories with his inane comments, and if CmdrTaco used a spell- and grammar-checker, and if stories stopped being duplicated within the week, as this demonstrates that none of the editors even bother reading Slashdot themselves (running a story from 6 months ago is understandable, however).
In any case, I used to think voting for stories would be a good thing, and for a while k5 was a good site. Now it is filled with anti-American drivel and other would-be punditry that I find quite distasteful, boring, and not newsworthy at all. The comments are worse than the trolls on Slashdot because the writers of the comments actually believe what they're writing, whereas the trolls are just there to annoy. -
Re:'blog
'A "blog" is an online diary. Just because it's a "journal", doesn't make it journalism, by the practical definition.'
Not all what people are calling blogs are just journal and online gossip columns - there are quite a few out there that have a lot of good information and intelligent, timely conversation. I don't usually go a day without checking Metafilter, Kuro5hin, and not least Slashdot (you know where!)
These sites announce and discuss news, happenings and issues on average much sooner and with much more intelligence than more common news and media outlets - showing a wide variety of opinions and viewpoints on everything. It's easy to spot important comments, ideas, and trends when you've got the benefit of community discussion to fill out the picture. Some of these sites use voting and moderation to help elevate messages that need to be seen to the users' eye, allowing them to easily find the highlights of any discussion or issue.
There are even specialty "blogs" that offer information on more specific areas of interest. The state of the art in blogging and scripting in general is being developed and discussed right in front of your eyes at Dave Winer's Scripting News. Scripting News focuses on scripting languages (python primarily) and blogging using the Radio Userland system, a rich weblogging environment that allows the interface and performace of sites to be scripted and adjusted as much as you like. It can utilize live news feeds from other systems and sources, as well. The New York Times recently agreed to distribute NYTimes.com content to sites using Radio. Winer's site highlights the technological aspects of running blogs and gives a lot of good information and tools for creating incredible sites using technologies like XML-RPC, SOAP, python, and others. The links to other sites for their comments and viewpoints also provide a good view of issues and the community in general.
Celebrities are even doing it: Adam Curry of MTV and broadcast fame does with great results and Wil Wheaton runs a pretty good site using another blogging system called Movable Type. There are some pretty professional sites springing up using the tools available.
The timeliness of sites like Slashdot and Metafilter keep participants up to date and informed on relevant issues. We all know that to be true.
The types of functionality available to the blogging community cover a wide span of needs and purposes. If all you want is a journal that a couple of people can read - you can have that. If you want to have a place to store all of your bookmarks and discuss and share them with others - you can have that, too. If you want something that will integrate all of your news and discussion - you can have it. If you want to compete with Big Media, you're fully free and capable of doing just that, as well.
With such a wide choice of blogging themes, it's easy to see that there is room for much diversity with this technology. All roses may be flowers, but so are dandelions - Ferarris may be cars, but what I'm driving's definitely just a car! "Blog", while a catchy name, is still a broad category. It's like saying "web page" - it could mean anything. Once "blogging" is mainstream, it will be time to make some new categories and descriptions.
