The LS:N "waypoints/orders...execute!" combat system is interesting (and in some ways more realistic), but I think LS:N is missing what made UFO such a cool game. It really was the story, the RPG element, that made X-Com so good. Your troops had names, and stats that developed, and the overarching UFO invasion story with its ever-increasing urgency gave the whole thing sense of continuity. Dopes like me with overactive imaginations would even invent personalities for the characters, and move them on the combat map accordingly. Laser Squad:Nemesis? You pick your troops like egg rolls from a bad Chinese buffet--- they're all generic: "I'll take four grenadiers, two commanders, two medics, two snipers, and as many grunts as I have points left for". Perhaps it also has something to do with the fact that I don't really care much for online play against other humans, but I found that LS:N ceased to amuse me after playing a half dozen of the canned maps.

Laser Squad Nemesis
http://www.lasersquadnemesis.com/ is made by the guys who made x-com, and with additional stuff like online play available.

Re:X-COM
The first two were written by the Gollop brothers, who have a new game along the same lines. It seems to be independantly published, and has some subscription system for online play, but I think the single player game is buy-once. There is a demo, which I am about to download.

Re:No bullfrog games? No X-com? Crappy list.
It might not be an official X-Com sequel, but Laser Squad Nemesis is a really good spiritual successor by the same designers, with more of a multiplayer focus.

Re:Badly in need of a remake
If you're wanting a sequel to X-COM you're looking for Laser Squad Nemesis. It was developed by the original X-COM team (Julian Gollop and crew) and shares most of the basic play mechanics.

You want to check out Laser Squad Nemesis. Made by the Gollops!

Re:I'm tired
I agree that getting older means that it is much harder to be impressed. I have to say that the only thing that really appeals to me anymore is when the game involves such a high level of thinking that it is more or less like chess. If you want to see a good example of such a game, check out Laser Squad Nemesis. It's a turn-based strategy game that involves positioning units and issuing orders in order to properly assault an intelligent enemy, namely another living, breathing human.

Laser Squad Nemesis
Laser Squad Nemesis is supposedly a pretty good modern version of X-Com. It was actually created and developed by former X-Com developers, so you may want to download the demo and give it a try. I haven't been able to try it out yet, so I couldn't tell you how it is, personally. The reviews seem pretty favorable, though.

Re:The Force is Not With Us.
And where is Laser Squad Nemesis, just released in the US ? http://www.lasersquadnemesis.com/
That's an awesome game, if you're in online tactical gaming... With a hell of a community. -
Re:Try neverwinter

Laser Squad Nemesis can be played 100% by mouse.
It is turn based, and a lot of players play one/two turns a day (so beeing slow is absolutely not a problem). Not difficult to play, hard to master, and a huge replay value. Very nice community. Need a subscription to be able to continuously play online. A free download is avalaible to try the game.
Download is small, product is regulary updated with new units and tuning.
Need both right and left clicks to play, which may be hard for disabled.
Do yourself a favor. Try it. -
Laser Squad Nemesis.
If you're not completely bent on an RPG, I highly suggest Laser Squad Nemesis--a great PBEM from some of the people that brought you the classic "X-Com."

X-Com/UFO: Enemy UnknownFor anyone who liked this, you'll probably like Laser Squad Nemesis, which is (to all intents and purposes) a remake of the classic by the original developers, but designed for Play-By-Email, rather than against AI.
Check out the screenshots - nicely updated and runs well on practically any spec PC - handily enough, they even offer a free trial.
I should mention, it can be dangerously addictive. Maybe not PlanetSide-grade addictive, but getting there.

Re:think of the gamers man!
There is a really good game now that could be played over the IPN
... Laser Squad: Nemesis. Its a ... Real Time, Turn Based, PBeM tactical sim ... it kicks ass! You can do turns at your own pace, and each turn takes 10 seconds of 'real' time in the game. Perfect for when your opponent is in a differnent timezone ... on a different planet. ;)
(for that that are interested, check here ... made by the original X-Com creators) -
Selling Games without a publisher...
...can be done.
Take a look at Laser Squad Nemesis - Written by the same guys who did X-Com. A free download, players can join the league by paying a subscription (various lengths).
You don't need the backing of a publisher to make a game work. LSN has done it by good marketing (especially being championed by popular UK games magazine PC-Zone). -
Re:The Illuminati CCG rules!
I've noticed few if any games having modem to modem multiplayer options anymore. I know the venerable modem is a little long in the tooth but I like playing over one. The lag is virtually non-existant and the bandwidth of the connection is enough to play most types of games
You ought to tryout "Laser Squad Nemesis,a multiplayer only version of Laser Squad (the forerunner of the X-Com series)
Its a strategy e-mail based game designed from the ground up for multiplayer games on slow dial up connections.
Theres a charge of $15 per 6 months (to pay for the usual updates etc), but if you can find someone with a subscription to challenge you to a match, you can get to try it out for free.

Don't discount 'Play By Email' systems.
Don't discount the ease of use of 'Play By Email' systems - you won't have to worry about the finer points of network programming, you won't have to worry about players behind bizarre firewalls.
Of course, this is only ideal for turn-based games. An example of such a game is the the brilliant Laser Squad Nemesis, from the XCOM developers (this was officially released a few days ago.)
