Is anyone else annoyed by the big Internet.com "network"? It seems that they are going around and buying every single worthwhile and half-worthwhile website out there? After the site is acquired, it becomes slower than it was before, because they fill it with ads and links to their other sites.

During the last year, this has happened to many of the sites I frequent. I'm getting really bugged, and a even a little scared. This post on Slashdot just gives me another reason to be so.

• TheCounter was an excellent counter service. They had a website with two banner ads on each page, and a nice clean layout. The counters they provided loaded quickly and reliably. After having been acquired, the website was redone to something that makes my eyes hurt, and the counters started either taking ages to load, or failing to load at all. Their solution? Create a new account so that it exists on our new server.
• No major changes yet at LinuxApps, except for all the links and ads for the other Internet.com sites. However, the same problem as the one listed in this post arises. Would a post about Freshmeat on LinuxNewbie be pulled because Internet.com owns LinuxApps, which is similar to Freshmeat? This is, apparently, what happened in this case.
• BrowserWatch, LinuxNewbie, PHPBuilder, and a lot of other sites I frequent have all been bought by Internet.com. There haven't been major changes on them yet, besides all the annoying links and logos, but this post gives me more reason to be paranoid.

As far as the above comments about other boot loaders overcoming the 1024 cyl barrier, the newest LILO version also overcomes it. There is also a way to get an unpatched kernel to read an ata66 connected hd, as outlined on http://www.linuxnewbie.org /nhf/intel/hardware/udma66.html.

That would be the promise ultra66 controller, sharing an irq for both ide channels.

Plugger apparently has some problems handling .png files.

A fix that was sugested on Linuxnewbie was to nuke both PNG mimetypes (or, if you don't feel comfortable deleting the mimetpyes, reasssocate both mimetypes back to your browser), and restart netscape.

Make sure you have a recent version of libpng installed, or you you won't be able to do anything with .png files.

Still, I'm not saying that I like record companies or dislike Napster. As a matter of fact, I wrote the NHF on using napster and playing mp3s under linux for linuxnewbie.org. And I agree with you that that Salon article was just the RIAA party line (although they have also written several pro-Napster articles). I was merely pointing out that the Signal 11's post was incorrect on the issue of touring.

Microtek Scanmaker X6. This is a parallel port scanner that will work with linux and costs less than 100$ Why? Because it seems to really be a scsi scanner that just works over parallel port and a nice little pportscsi patch to kernel will take care of that minor inconvienience. Check this for more.

Well, I admit that it is pretty easy to go between GNOME and KDE. I have only used KDE a handful of times but it was not a unpleasant experience.

I do not see what is so difficult to understand about GNOME but some people just do not understand it. I read a article the other day by some one named Dru Lee Parsec who does not understand GNOME at all but understands KDE. I really should be writing articles because the loonies they have writing the articles never understand.

I am afraid that people are going to start complaining again that /. favors the GPL and GNOME and BLAH BLAH BLAH.

Linux is not hard to install at all. Many of the latest versions now include graphic installers to walk you through it step by step. Some of the ones that come to mind are Redhat and Mandrake. It will most likely run fine on your Compaq. To be sure you can check out the hardware section on Linux.com. Linuxnewbie.org helped me quite a bit in getting it installed and configured correctly.

However, I didn't see that as the main reason for writing the article. The MAIN thing he was trying to say is that HE had been attacked for saying that linux was hard for newbies. Newbies having a hard time setting up their machine and people being attacked for writing negative articles are two different things.

My experience as a Linux Newbie (from last October) is that it's a lot of fun. There are people out there who are willing to help you. I didn't have one person tell me to RTFM. Sure it wasn't easy at all and some stuff is fairly hard to get set up. Some applications are less intuitive than in windows. In fact, my opinion is that Linux won't be ready for the AOL newbie until 2003.

offtopic: It could really be neat trying to set up one of those computers than the user can use out of the box. When you buy a Distro CD your software is not really optomised. If you controlled the hardware you could make much more specific assumptions about the user. You could tweak the kernel to be super slim and fast. Set up X and sound etc. All the user would need to do is plug it in and answer a few questions about time zone and usernames and so on.

The articles that people flamed him for weren't that bad. He just said that Linux was going to be pretty complicated if you weren't very good with computers. I think it's true right now. You'd be surprised the number of people who don't know how to tell if they are using Gnome or KDE. Give it a year or two.

Maybe 900 comments per Slashdot article will be trolls. But most of us are decent folk.

LinuxApps.com is not owned by VA. It is a Linux.com partner, much in the same way that LinuxNewbie.org (which is owned by internet.com) is a Linux.com partner.

• Look at their Samba install advice: download the source and build ... the RPM? For a huge percentage of newbies this is just plain wrong-headed. If one is on a system that supports RPM, one probably already has an RPM that is consistent with the kernel version. If that samba is too old, probably the whole distro is too old. If one is not on a system that supports RPM: totally screwed. There is no mention of any of this. Instead it says right at the front of that article: having problems? go read the samba doc.
• That was one example. I have similar complaints about just about everything else I looked at, including the home page which does not strike me as at all simple and/or inviting to people who want to try linux but aren't sure where to start or where they stand.
• Read the piece about "why some guy chose NT over linux." His reason boils down to security: he thinks the way samba (not linux, samba) handles expired passwords (they keep working) is not secure enough. That guy doesn't know much about Windows security, does he? Expire your passwords all you want, pal, but if you send'em in clear text you are completely insecure. And where did you read about this anyway? I would doubt highly that it was uncovered by accident.
• That article calls into question the LinuxNewbie model: newbies writing doc for other newbies? All previously existing Linux HOWTOs and advice are missing from LinuxNewbie.Org... that's not just a waste, it's is less than helpful.
• Probably, it's just poor execution and not bad intent. But if Bill Gates paid me to set up a website that would undermine linux by getting newbies into trouble, what I would do is mirror LinuxNewbie.Org. To tilt the table any more against linux would, in my opinion, get me caught. Yes, that's how harsh my criticism is.

I do not have blinders on about linux. Cross platform advice is important to many newbies who will likely have a foot in several OS camps for the foreseeable future. And, the linux HOWTO world is pretty screwed up: while once it was highly useful, it is now too far out of date for newbies (oh, for how long did I slavishly rebuild my kernel to get masquerading... years after RedHat built it in). But ignoring it all and have newbies hash out the "new" way is not a good idea.

I've just erased all that is Microsoft so I live with only Linux from now on. I have just installed RedHat 6.1 with the updates and whatnot from a few hours ago... I'm downloading the linux-2.2.14.tar.gz file (not the .patch file) from ftp.us.kernel.org, and I'm reading a page on upgrading the kernel from Linuxnewbie.org at the same time. However, I can't put my finger on how to properly install and use the new 2.2.14-bundled modules. I know the computer will "modularize" everything else when I follow the Linuxnewbie directions, but I don't know how to make it so that I am using ONLY the latest module for my Adaptec SCSI controller (the "aic7xxx" module) and nothing more. The last time I used Linux, I remembered something to the effect of "the aic7xxx module is already loaded (possibly the 2.2.12-20 version, from an initrd file)" during the bootup sequence. Obviously I screwed up something back then. Even more, I will have to take care of the 3dfx Voodoo3 stuff and the Sound Blaster Live! support for the latest kernel as well. What should I do?

Linux is not for everyone yet. It has a pretty steep and frustrating learning curve. Persistance will pay off, however. Cable Modems are simple to run off of Linux. I know that ADSL is easy if you have an external hardware DSL modem like my company does. (Actually we use BSD as our server) I have heard that any DSL isn't so hard to set up in linux but I have no first hand knowledge.

Go to Linux Newbie for info.

Linux is like a multi-user, multi-tasking, DOS on steroids. You need a GUI to sit on top of it if you want a windowing environment much the way win3.1/win95/win98 sit on top of DOS.

Try MandrakeLinux first because it is the most beginner friendly. Hope this helps and good luck.

Also, most documentation breaks down when the user wants to do anything 'adventuresome' -- more than just word processing, emailing, and surfing the Net. Its assumed that a "Linux for Dummies" (please don't sue me IDG) book is for Dummies, and that these Dummies are unwilling to learn anything that don't need to, that reading makes their brains hurt. But what about the people that do want to learn? Where is the documentation for them? I'm not talking about the "The Linux Kernel Hackers' Guide", "Beowulf HOWTO", or other high-end specialty topics. I'm talking about wannabe geeks that want to read clear, concise, complete documentation about everything they can get their hands on. Sure, they could learn everything by experimentation, or asking questions, but wouldn't some decent docs save alot of time and anguish?

Thank you for pretty much summing up where I'm at when it comes to Linux.

I want to learn as much as I can about why Linux is set up the way it is; what the directories are for, and why some executables are is /usr/bin instead of /bin.

The man pages can be confusing at times, and to me most of the "Newbie-ized Help Files" at Linuxnewbie.org read as if the person using them has never touched a computer before.

The real problem with getting people to write documentation is that its not 'sexy' enough. People would much rather be playing Quake, or coding some killer app then spending their time trying to write interesting documentation on something most see as a boring topic.

I'd even help write it if I can find someone who has the information I want.

I really don't think that documentation (or its authors!) get the attention is deserves. So here I'm going to give a great big THANK YOU to all of the worlds Linux and Open Source documentation writers and the FAQ and HOWTO maintainers. You guys provide an invaluable service. Keep up the good work.

With the big number of new users that linuz is getting, myself included, I see a need for not neccessarily more documentation, but better ( ok, dumbed down ) documentation.Linux Newbie has been a great help to me, and I know quite a few others who have benefitted from it. I think this is really a good step in the right direction but we need some of these NHFs with the distrobutions. Lets face it for some one learning a new operating system so of those HOWTOs can be pretty cryptic. So, keep if ya got a talent for dumbing down stuff and you know a particular subject like the back of your hand, get and old help file, and rewrite it to help out the new and somewhat ignorant user base. After all, somebody did it for you.

http://www.alsa-project.org/ Don't let the version # fool you, ALSA has been awesome on w/ my GUS Max since I started using it 6-8 months ago. You may want to save ALSA for a future go-round, though, until you're feel comfortable configuring drivers not included as part of the stock kernel, as it's completely redone (and backward compatible) sound support for Linux, which is planned to be the next generation drivers and API. Also, it has a user mailing list in case you'd like a helping hand.

Both have documentation about how to go about setting it up, so given the inclination, you can have sound right now instead of waiting for the next round of distro updates. :)

Btw, kernel configuration and compiling really isn't very difficult - it's primarily choosing what devices to support, and a few protocols (and each option has a friendly little help display if you're unsure). First I must warn all that I have long since dropped out of my business analysis train of thought as I steadily receded back into loving electronics and OS's - *NIX being my favorite.

Businesses and managers are very impressionable folks. In that I mean they truly believe in commercialism. I have worked with government and commercial sector and I have seen the way salesmen can appeal to these goons. With the government it is - well kinda perverse in a way but it works, with business it's easy -- we offer you this and get that.

So let's break off and follow that last statement for a second, we offer this and we are saying you get that.

Now let's apply the late 80's early 90's MS edition of that very same statement:

If you want that you must buy this in order to survive and have that, oh yeah we forgot to mention you have to also buy this other pile of sh*t as well but we can get inot that later . . .

Now come back to the present.

Joe Blow IT Manager, the very same schmuck whose light up when the dancing paperclip "finally does voice recognition" (f*n idiot) sees this. He now says - sh*t, maybe sinking all of that $$$$ into M$ could kick back - - QUICK, what do the other InfoWorld Ad say? Who should I turn to?

Yes this will happen. Even some delusional idiots will actually turn to Apple to solve their "hi end needs". This will be the first fallout.

But hey, all society advancement comes at great pains and cost, this will be one of them. By the same token just as many smart IT Managers will sit back and "see where things are going" and probably apt for a conservative UNIX Company or quite possibly FreeBSD or Slakware (despite it's "freeness" Slakware still boasts the best uptime and stability in distro - not neccessarily kernel).

IT Managers, believe it or not, think very short term as within 2-3 years or so. They are not forward thinkers (well not most of them I am sure the gang at Red Hat might take me up on that) so many saw NT as a good thing for the next year or maybe 2 years. This makes sense when the byline of your job is "keep from gettin' fired".

So, first, businesses will begin to lose confidence in MS, some will stick with them but many (as is already happening) will turn to companies like VALINUX and Sun.

The home computing market gradually lags anyway due to out of pocket expense limits so breaching the MS infiltration will take several years, but I believe as more becomes available and usable, more home users will seek alternatives. They may or may not turn to Linux, that is hard to tell (but I can say, the time is ripe for FreeBSD to make it's move).

Ultimately home users will not change their hbits for a long long time, I think everyone already sees this. I expect a shift to take place in 2-3 years (given the current buying trends).

I mention them in the same context here because I mean the same thing - both GNU / Linux and OSI now will see something that has been slowly and quietly happening for a long time.

Converts

Developers and geeks alike will also lose confidence in the almighty M$. We now will be given an opportunity to bring in and cultivate untapped talent that simply "didn't know any better" but have now awoken. This will most likely happen (in large numbers) after a ruling which is pretty sure to go against M$. It is already happening, as a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Linuxnewbie.org's mailing list jumps a little next week.

This isn't much different from other breakups as far as business is concerned. Geeks, however, will reap great reward which as all /. readers know is what matters.

based on what i've seen at LNO it seems that there is some buzz going around to newbies that Mandrake is the distro for them.

I highly recommend it to the emails i get as well, however, this buzz is obviously strong because the influx of new linux users seem to head straight for Mandrake.

Mandrake is faster than redhat and easier to install and comes with a few more apps. Redhat seems to have taken a hint with their newer gui install.

I sometimes op on an Efnet channel called #linuxnewbie (related to the LinuxNewbie.ORG website), and haven't seen any flaming over distro choices there. The point of THIS channel is NOT to wave the biggest dic^H^H^Hdistro around, but to help people who are new to Linux. I know that I received a LOT of help there with my Slackware installation, and I've seen many others request and get help with many different distros, though not with a "Macmillan" distro. Lots of people with Mandrake questions though, along with SuSE, Slack, Caldera, RedHat etc, etc etc.....

Another good resource for new users is http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ which is home the NHF (newbieized help file) and has web-based dicussion forums.

Other good resources for hard-to-find info are http://www.deja.com/ (a usenet search engine), http://www.google.com/ (THE search engine), and http://www.freshmeat.net/ (the canonical software search engine) .. Freshmeat itself doesn't necessarily have the info, but the software packages for any given type of application tend to have useful links. For instance, the xawtv site that I found by searching freshmeat had the drivers necessary for the WinTV 401 card I recently configured, and the cdrecord site, as found on freshmeat, has a ton of useful cd burning resources.

Regarding newbie-friendly docs, http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ has NHFs (newbieized help files). On the LDP, the Guides - particularly the Installation and Getting Started Guide and the Linux Users' Guide are informative and accessible.

Sounds like a declassified version of the Ground Support Radar [GSR] units we used years ago in the Army. So here it is: A mirror of Slashdot (as of a week or so ago). It exists now for testing: So feel free to post comments and help test the new load balancer. For the curious, the new system has 3 http machines (P2s) and one mysql box (a dual P2) with a load balancer trying to keep everyone all equally busy. And its about time: the old setup has been really stressed out trying to keep up with everyone. Anyway, don't get to attached to any of your comments here, when we're satisfied that the new setup is stable, I'm gonna mirror over Slashdot and make the final switcheroo.

He's talking about hand-held radar systems police can use to detect breathing, beating hearts or other motion through walls and other obstacles. Sounds like a declassified version of the Ground Support Radar [GSR] units we used years ago in the Army. I can see why police would want them, and I can also see why Bram considers them a privacy threat. Depends on how they're used, I suppose.

So here it is: A mirror of Slashdot (as of a week or so ago). It exists now for testing: So feel free to post comments and help test the new load balancer. For the curious, the new system has 3 http machines (P2s) and one mysql box (a dual P2) with a load balancer trying to keep everyone all equally busy. And its about time: the old setup has been really stressed out trying to keep up with everyone. Anyway, don't get to attached to any of your comments here, when we're satisfied that the new setup is stable, I'm gonna mirror over Slashdot and make the final switcheroo.

He's talking about hand-held radar systems police can use to detect breathing, beating hearts or other motion through walls and other obstacles. Sounds like a declassified version of the Ground Support Radar [GSR] units we used years ago in the Army. I can see why police would want them, and I can also see why Bram considers them a privacy threat. Depends on how they're used, I suppose.

He's talking about hand-held radar systems police can use to detect breathing, beating hearts or other motion through walls and other obstacles. Sounds like a declassified version of the Ground Support Radar [GSR] units we used years ago in the Army. I can see why police would want them, and I can also see why Bram considers them a privacy threat. Depends on how they're used, I suppose.

So here it is: A mirror of Slashdot (as of a week or so ago). It exists now for testing: So feel free to post comments and help test the new load balancer. For the curious, the new system has 3 http machines (P2s) and one mysql box (a dual P2) with a load balancer trying to keep everyone all equally busy. And its about time: the old setup has been really stressed out trying to keep up with everyone. Anyway, don't get to attached to any of your comments here, when we're satisfied that the new setup is stable, I'm gonna mirror over Slashdot and make the final switcheroo.

Another good one is http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ - It has what they call "NHF's", which stands for Newbie Help Files.

You may also want to have a look at Linux.Com which is working to provide articles and links to help newbies get established.

Once you understand the basics, learning how to do new things or handle new situations becomes much easier. Then your tools can become mailing list archives for particular things you may be looking for information on, and deja.com & google.com for that hard-to-find tidbit.

OK OK.. The following article here Is garbage - I never wrote it, posted it, said it or anything. I don't have a girlfriend... (sux eh?) I live on the 3rd floor, not the 2nd, my computer does all it needs, I haven't given any notice to Red Hat about leaving in any way or form - nor am I intending to, Red Hat is just fine - it's not becoming a huge microsoft, E is NOT dead - damnit.. I'm still patching stuff and am adding features (just been sick for the last week with a flu - thus a bit slow), and no - not all my knowledge is computer based. I can speak German and French pretty well, can paint and draw. Hell it was posted at 6:26pm - I was at the Durham Ball park watching a baseball game with other Red Hat employees at that time. So whoever was so childish as to go posting this complete piece of FUD and GARBAGE I think now would be a good time to come clean and admit it and fix it. I DON'T like people masquerading as me - It's not nice to do it, not gentlmanly, not mature and not intelligent. I have very little respect for such childish behavior. If I have anything to say I'll say it HERE on MY pages at rasterman.com - not at some site I've never heard about until today. (my emphasis) Now back to doing useful stuff, like code... and looking for a girlfriend.... :)
