Had to Convince My Boss of the Same
I had to convince my previous boss of the same fact. Security called him to say that I was using the piracy tool BitTorrent. I sent him this link: http://linuxtracker.org/index.php?page=torrents and told them to leave me alone.
They never did accept that I was using Tor as a quick way to view our public services from outside the network.
I should have asked them to pay me in Bitcoin just to see their reaction.

Re:Maybe. freemoviestorrents.com no, linuxtracker.
I don't know about "most", since I haven't done a survey. I'm guessing you haven't either. What I can say is the freemoviestorrents.com is completely and obviously all about infringement, of Hollywood movies specifically. http://linuxtracker.org/ , on the other hand, is clearly not.
I say "most" because when a site does not meet both of those criteria, it tends to get taken down. So maybe transient sites that pop up and are then taken down might constitute a majority. I don't know. But I can say with some confidence that the majority of long established and successful sites do meet those criteria.

The protocol is as neutral as http. There are lawful web pages, and there are unlawful web pages.

Re:where's the firehose
Vote this article down - it's misleading flamebait in the extreme. In particular, it fails to mention that the software was designed to facilitate anonymous filesharing, which would most certainly be used for copyright infringement and illegal purposes.
Yeah, anonymous file sharing has no legitimate purposes whatsoever.

Re:I don't see the problem
Yes, actually. Although I don't know whether Red Hat replaces the Tux image with something of their own.

Re:Mirrors?
I've had a try at setting up a torrent for it: http://linuxtracker.org/index.php?page=torrent-details&id=5665e3caf528c853645efe633113c6bab9042718

Re:How is this even possible!!?!?!?!!!
You mean illegal knowledge transfer. You see there is a difference say from linux torrents and movie torrents. I don't see anyone wanting to shutdown this site: http://linuxtracker.org/

I know it isn't the majority of traffic, but there are plenty of trackers of completely legitimate content out there where you could easily seed 100GB/day if you had the connection for it. -
I used to run SUSE
It was the only distro I could find that fully supported WPA-PSK for my laptop "out of the box"... But I've tried Linux Mint since then, and it's great. Coincidentially, Linux Mint 2.2 (Bianca) was released today.

Re:Now if only they'd attend to their web site!
I see two workarounds -
1. fill in their form with fake info, or
2. download the torrent
Although I do agree, Novell really should know better... -
Re:Linux doesn't have to be better
Back in the day, we used to use Google to find out the answers to questions we didn't know.
A quick search for 'suse livedvd screensaver' gives this page, amongst others:
http://linuxtracker.org/torrents-details.php?id=22 27
Including this description:
SuSE Linux 10.1 , set up so that it will boot the way you expect; also will 'autorun' under Microsoft Windows; and will run as a Microsoft Windows screensaver. Uses QEMU to run under Windows; rather slow, but functionally fine. Linux gets everywhere ! I wonder, will anyone want to put it on their preload ? No reason they shouldn't, provided they put source code on too, to keep the GPL sweet. Great marketing novelty, I reckon. Jamming along nicely ... Oh, I forgot. To end the screensaver, the fastest way is to do Ctrl-Alt-F, then click on the red 'X'. This is an update of SuSE 10.0 screensaver
It looks like it is a convenient DVD to have if you want to get Linux up and running fast on a computer without having to install it, or even reboot it.
And if so, what good is that?
Even if you don't own the computer and you can't install anything on it, you can still get Linux running quickly. -
Linux doesn't have to be betterIt just has to be free; as in 'commercial freedom', or 'independence'.
You can get Linux a screensaver for Windows here
SuSE 10.1, nothing but the newest.

Re:HmmmYou'll be replacing CentOS with Gentoo within a few days.
Uh, sure, if the GP wants to spend the next several days compiling/configuring every... last... thing... (which is the purpose of Gentoo--total control of your OC).
CentOS is a rock solid platform. What exactly (besides a distro-flame war) do you hope to accomplish by such an indictment against a perfectly good OS??

Re:Why Bittorrent
I just got the latest DSL (2.2b) from http://linuxtracker.org/ a few days ago using Azureus. Actually, I'm still seeding it at 30k along with quite a few others using various speeds. I got a 50MB download in just less than a couple of minutes, and have gotten larger iso's (debian/slack) in surprisingly short periods of time. Maybe it's just the tracker or client you were using.
ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE != PROOF! YOU ARE NOT EVERYONE ON THE INTERNET! MAYBE IT WAS HIS FUCKING ISP!
Sheesh. -

My download's completely legal, fully within the ToS of my cable company ISP, and I haven't had any problems using it once I got a few firewall issues sorted out. Bittorrent is a great program, but I think most of the media wants to throw out the baby with the bathwater. Just because it's a tool used by pirates and/or theives, doesn't mean that every single application for it is evil by association. -

Re:Why can't it automatically remove?Yeah. Because Gnutella offers downloads that scale well when new distros are released. It allows people who don't have complete copies of a high-demand file can contribute to the swarm. Searches are really fast, too, because you can immediately hop on the network and find most anything you need immediately. Also, it's network topology doesn't splinter users, in centralizes them based on what files they demand.
Oh wait...
Not to bash Gnutella, but there is a very good reason it is not used for large downloads that tend to get Slashdotted, like new Linux distro releases. Using Gnutella for downing Linux ISOs is a step backward. The Gnutella network is good for some things, but as Bit Torrent mutates into a decentralized network that can use an anonymous routing layer, Gnutella will fall off the map, I think.
Instead of talking about Gnutella, I'm surprised more posts haven't mentioned the other Linux tracker sites:

New Linux TrackerIn keeping with the theme of things here....
A new Linux Distro centered tracker site has opened up at the address: linuxtracker.org. It's a recent startup, but it selection seems to be growing pretty rapidly.
There really should be some central location in which Linux related developers can upload torrents to. Time will tell if this site is able to provide this much-needed service or not.
