A bio is useful here
Stuart Cohen today is chief executive officer of the Open Source Development Labs. With more than 22 years of international sales and marketing experience, he is a seasoned technology industry executive and has served in a variety of executive roles. Most recently, Cohen was vice president and corporate officer at RadiSys Corporation where his responsibilities included strategic partnership development with other industry leaders including IBM, HP and Dell. Prior to RadiSys, Stuart was vice president of worldwide marketing and a corporate officer at InFocus Corporation. Stuart spent 17 years with IBM, where he held senior positions in the US sales & marketing division, and the IBM Personal Computer Company and Networking Division, with international business development responsibilities in Europe, Southeast Asia and China. Stuart holds a B.S. in Quantitative Business Analysis from Arizona State University.
So... a corporate marketdroid that never invented anything, never built a business, who coattailed himself into executive positions with minor players based on prior employment relationships with major players who has a B.S. in Quantitative Business Analysis. Who, coincidentally is trying to bridge free software and services in a for-pay model that's starving for attention?
I'm gonna go with... um... so they couldn't get an Enderle quote? Was Maureen O'Gara busy that day? How did this guy talk his way into OSDL? It's interesting that their Wikipedia page mentions him not at all.

Age Discrimination by IDGIDG had a new policy this year for the LinuxWorld Expo:
"Age Policy LinuxWorld Conference & Expo is open to business professionals only. No one under 18 years of age will be admitted."
If this annoys you as much as it does me, you might be inspired to complain to the Show Director, PR Manager and/or the Marketing VP.
You also might ask your favorite vendors to speak up on the subject. The Show Director tells me that the reasons for the change is complaints from exhibitors about too many students.
It seems a little ridiculous that a 17-year old kernel hacker would be turned away at the door by Linuxworld. I gather that this is a bone tossed to vendors complaining about poor sales at the Expo, but it strikes me as being fairly short-sighted... in the computer biz, you really want to get 'em while they're young, before they settle in on a particular OS.

Unfortunately, it seems that Slashdot has a limitation on the minimum number of characters per line. So I can't just create a nice, simple list, but instead need a significant amount of text to pad out the list, so that I can make it past the filters being used. But I'm still not there yet... sooner or later I will (20.4 is still too few). I'm probably going to have to type a whole lot of crap in here just to deal with the 25 names that are only a few characters each. (and I tried removing returns from the message, but it didn't seem to help at all)

It's April 3-6 2006
Here's the link to the conference site for those wanting to know details such as the date
;)
I've been to this show several times and it's always a blast. A nice way to collect more new Penguin T-shirts, Linux pens and other artifacts of our era for archeologists to puzzle over a thousand years hence!

Re:How about making server side only apps?
Don't get me wrong. Javascript has it's place-- it's great for some client-side UI stuff, and it can be used to print user-friendly error messages (but I've see a ton of crap using Javascript: Check out the poor quality of the registration section of the Linuxworld Expo website for some examples-- the developers behind it should be canned : http://www.linuxworldexpo.com/live/12/events/12SF
O 05A/
But many people use it exclusively, and don't have sufficient server-side validation. That's asking for trouble. -
Re:archive.org or TLDP.org
That's not bad, but it's not very Linux specific. There are thousands of Linux sites that have articles, papers, and presentations some with forums and community news. Most Events, Conferences, Expos, and LUGs archive their own presentations . Some are GPL, but many are copywrited by the individuals or published in magazines in various formats. Try to find some older presentations from the Linux World Expos http://www.linuxworldexpo.com/. Point is there should be some quality controls, standard formats and GPL restrictions...
Why not contribute & support The Linux Documentation Project (TLDP) http://tldp.org/ ? ...they've been at this longer than most, and I'm sure they could use some help. The overall goal of the LDP is to collaborate in taking care of all of the issues of Linux documentation, ranging from online documentation (man pages, HTML, HOWTOs, Guides and so on) to printed manuals covering topics such as installing, using, and running Linux. -
Martin Fink wants to decrease the # of licensesI heard the speech, Martin Fink said it was his opinion that there were too many licenses and not OSI's opinion. I don't remember him saying that OSI would do this, but as a member of the board of OSDL he would be asking them to do so. I think the article explains it better than either of the articles posted above.
Now before people starting giving out about the Fink, he is one of people who got HP to start supporting Linux (and especially Debian). And has done a lot of evangelical work for Linux, Open Source, & Free Software.
He also talked a little about software patents, and how that even if one disagrees with them that one still need to pay attention to them. And that it's not the fact that one has patented something, but what one does with a patent that counts. Only problem with this is that any of us came up with a great software patentable idea, we probably couldn't afford the fees involved in patenting something and then allowing free use of it.
Fink is the head of Linux services at HP, he is also VP or director at OSDL, see his bio at the Linux Expo site.

MacWorld Expo is really run by IDG, which also runs the LinuxWorld Expo. The LinuxWorld Expo website also runs Windows Server 2003.

January?
Has anyone noticed that the author says LinuxWorld Boston in January? The LinuxWorld Expo in Boston will be taking place February 14th-17th.
Of course, I'm assuming this is what the autor is actually referring to.

It probably has quite a bit to do with the Linux World Expo that is going on this week -- A venue for companies to make announcements about their Linux products.

Gentoo growing in popularityThis is a timely topic, as the Gentoo Weekly Newsletter (GWN) had the following information today:
- Gentoo growing in popularity
According to this article[1] on InternetNews, Netcraft's January survey
counted over 24,000 Gentoo installations on active web servers, showing
almost 20% growth over 6 months. Also, as we've reported in the past,
Gentoo has been getting more and more recognition from various sources
recently - while Gentoo Linux did not win the award, it was a finalist for
a Product Excellence Award at LWE 2004[2], and has been featured in
publications like Linux Journal[3] and Linux Weekly News[4]. Here's a
shout out to all the developers and community members who keep making
Gentoo great.

Re:Buy-in from customer base needed...
Check out the OSDL Data Center Linux project, as well as the Carrier Grade Linux projects.
Some good info about specific kernel changes can be found in the DCL Road Map.
OSDL has been *great* with regard to bringing companies and kernel hackers together on this subject. Gathering specs, performing QA, and allowing use of hardware. I had talked with Timothy Witham at Linux World about database performance, and he said he's seeing dramatic speed improvements on a 2.5 kernel over 2.4 (20%->30%, using standard TPC benchmarks). Though I don't remember the database he was using (not MySQL or Postgres, but it was open source I believe). -

MS at booth 257
According to this link, Microsoft is exhibiting the following products:
This exhibitor is not currently assigned to any product categories.
I can name a few categories in which to put MS products. If that can help. -
Their web site runs on MS s/w
Much my suprise netcraft showed that www.linuxworldexpo.com is running on MS machines!
Now I know that the web server s/w id can be faked (eg walmart) but the OS is shown as MS too!
also they have had linux+apache listed in the past, so i can only guess that they may have a mix (mirrors) or have switch to MS totaly =/ -
Probably an Acquisition
Doesn't anyone else think it odd that a company with $40 billion in cash would get a 10'x10' booth in the "startups" section at the Linux show?
Perhaps the single most plausible explanation for this is that Microsoft recently acquired a company that had already paid for their booth. There are several companies listed on the rookery page of the conference web site that do not appear on the show floor map. These include Globetrotter, Shaolin Microsystems, APPX Software, and Cylant. None of them appears to have anything on their web sites about being acquired, however.

Re:Someone's missing.
Hm, KDE is also missing and I am pretty sure I am flying into San Francisco for LWCE.
This either implies a very sloppy job by our organiser or that the exhibitor list is simply not complete. -
Prime booth location, too!
Microsoft's Booth is right between "Cybozu Corporation" and "LTrix Engineering". Oooo. Prestigious location.

Linux Expo without Linus?

-
Re:world domination?
An online version of either Illuminati or INWO would be nice, but I'm thinking that someone needs to organize a game at the next LinuxWorld or something. (And yes, I realize that Alan won't be attending any US-based conferences.)
-
Re:Just tell me
Why the hell does their pricing page say that $25 give you access to the exhibits only? Read after me. Exhibits only. Exhibits ONLY. Maybe you could sneak in by hiding in the flow of the crowd, but not everyone shares your low morals.

...and just in time for a party at LWE!
Linux World Expo is next week at the Moscone Center in San Francisco!
It's pretty cool to see how far Linux has actually come since the 'ol days. Maybe one day we'll finally settle this whole Gnome vs KDE stuff once and for all.... ;)
Speaking of parties..don't forget this party to raise funds for Dimitry's legal defense. -
Re:Erik: does this mean...
No, that's not what it means. Nico has been working on this for quite some time (sponsored by MontaVista), but he still maintains the SA1100 Linux tree. I am still working on the LART.
Nico and I have been sharing a hotel room during the Linux World Expo in New York, and we wanted to have the XScale shown running on the expo. So we hacked on thursday night and showed the result on friday.
About the UCB1200 driver: there is a unified UCB1200 driver in Nico's latest SA1100 patch. I promised to review it, but still got no time to do it. I'll do it Real Soon Now [tm].

Unions Suck...
My company is preparing to go to LWE, and we had to ship 5 computers and about 40 boxes of tshirts, as well as some other swag, across country (LA-NYC).
It cost us some $1100 to ship it all.
That's about 3000 miles...the union at the Javits center is charging us almost $1500 to move the SAME boxes less than 1000 feet.
That's nothing but extortion, pure and simple.
We are NOT ALLOWED TO carry in our own stuff...dollies aren't allowed on the show floor unless a union guys pushing it. It's fucking ridiculous.
And the bad thing is that companies and convention centers condone this behaviour.
Another example; we have a popcorn machine at our booths...they won't allow us to dispense it ourselves, we have to pay a union worker over $20 per hour. $20 PER HOUR TO HAND OUT POPCORN!!!
It disgusts me...honest to God. -
what you like to do?
I would say that there are tons of conferences out there but generally speaking the SAGE conference is where you can network with some really cool people (and its in New Orleans ).
If you are into security then there is a MIS training institute that gives pretty good classes.
If you want free gizmos and gadgets then LinuxWorldExpo is hard to beat.
I've been to the orielly conference this year and that was pretty decent especially if its not your money. ( I got the hook up for 3 free books !!!! )
I would suggest if you go to any conferences and get a workshop or session or what ever people call them make sure to get "hands-on" (or the equivalent) type of class because it sticks with you a whole lot better.

Some material for consumption
It's difficult to find good evidence on both sides of the argument for Open Source. For the record, I'm definitely in favor of open source (especially if your company has no competency in software). In any case, I've included some pieces of evidence, not necessarily in favor of open source per se, but perhaps a bit more generally about dealing with an open community with regards to development.
- Luc Barthlet's "The Simulation Sandbox"
Actually an overview of "The Sims" before it came out, but the end of the lecture discusses how they used immediate Internet feedback to improve the design of the game. - Linux GNOME FAQ
Hidden in the depths of the FAQ in the section "What CORBA implementation is GNOME using?", is a comment about how Xerox's implementation of CORBA was not used. If this had been open sourced, Xerox's name would be associated with an important part of one of the largest software projects around. - OpenSource.org
I apologize if I've being repetitive, but I didn't see this URL earlier. Anyway, this site has some very good arguments in favor of open source. You may wish to take what they have and modify it slightly for your specific purpose. - Successful OpenSource sites
Conferences like O'Reilly's Open Source Software Convention, LinuxWorld Expo, open source projects like Apache and MySQL, and sites like SourceForge and IBM DeveloperWorks are showing that Open Source Software (in some cases) is becoming quite mainstream. If you have even one really cool project, that's advertising that no budget could pay for.
Well, I hope this helps.

Free software and big businessCould you please explain the reasons why you seem not wanting to be involved in any "big business" with open source or free software? I mean, a lot of well-known open source people showed up at the Linux World Expo in NYC this February. Often your name was mentiond as being the one who "started this all". What are the reasons that you don't attend such an event?
- Stephan.

Re:Mail on a different machine can be me@mydomain.But what happens when your DNS server is out, and all the data have expired ?
Of course at least you should have different DNS servers, preferably also in different geographical regions. Then the data can't expire, if there is still at least one of your DNS servers around the world up and running.
And with the MX records: as somebody stated before, you don't have to have different domains for your email and your web server, as long as the A record for web server points to a completely different server than the MX record for your email.
And, another important thing, you should also have at least two MX records with completely different servers behind them, perhaps also in different geographical regions. This way you still get email (at least with some delay) when the first MX server is down.
