Re:Who uses Atom??
For anyone interested in the tag differences between the two feeds, look at the simplicity of the RSS feed compared to the noticeably more complex Atom feed. The difference will probably enlighten many people, as it did me, about which information is more useful. It seems that they have jammed a whole lot more attributes into each element. The usefulness of that information can be dubious at best, however.

Re:Who uses Atom??
LiveJournal has atom feeds enabled for all of its accounts.
Here's for example, ATOM feed from my account (don't read it, it's in ru-ru anyway), and if you change the username, you can get anyone's ATOM feed. -
Um...huh?
"But: do you want to meet people on the Web at all?"
Well, given that I met someone on match.com more than two years ago and that we're getting married in August, I'd say there's nothing wrong with meeting people on the web.
If it weren't for the web, I wouldn't have met my font-design mentor, Chank, despite the fact that we live in the same city. Some of my best friends on the planet, I've met through IRC and Livejournal
That said, I still don't want to have a sitatuation as describe in the article of being aware of people that are surfing the same sites I am. Especially when I'm surfing the pr0n. I mean, yeesh...talk about TMI. -
Re:Culture jam Gi-Joe/Barbie
So I thought you had just gipped this off of an episode of the Simpsons wherein Malibou Stacy says a phrase just like that. I was a tad shocked to find out it's true, and the Simpsons were merely mocking real life. Apparently it's called Teen Talk Barbie, released in 1992. A person with more details (but no references) posted on this board. According to that second link, the quote is "Math class is tough!" I imagine most people make the quote you did from having seen the Simpsons episode previously.

Freenet mirror of John Ashcroft link
The blog post linked in the summary (as John Aschroft) contains what appears to be an entire Vanity Fair article. While it's properly attributed, it will no doubt be removed via pressure from somewhere or other; most likely not at the request of Vanity Fair, but by someone else using the article's copyright as a straw man.
The text has been mirrored for posterity in the Freenet network at:
CHK@~hhRclleaZhvLuTqszqG3ZuoGCsQAwI,u3nABqXhTmGA tC 9SDv5lYw/Ashcroft.txt
If the CHK@ is greek to you, please have a look at the Freenet project. -
Taping The Day After Tomorrow? Why would they WANT to pirate it? Steal it perhaps to destroy it and save humanity from its scourge, but propagating the thing? Evil!
(And here's an amusing summary/parody of the thing for those who are up for a little MST3K style ribbing at it.)

What happens on Livejournal when you die ...What happens when you die on Livejournal.
My wife told me about this -- one of our friends is on here. I don't really do lj (my life is chronicled on Usenet!) so I'm not up on the politics, but apparantly people have tried to get people removed from this list, or to have their journals removed after their death, and lj (or somebody else, I don't know) has been unwilling to do so.

Re:Poor Critique of Gnome 2.6 / Poor Review
Yes, spatial Nautilus is a poor choice of reasons to criticize GNOME, when there are so many other shitty GNOME misfeatures you could choose, like basic font handling and atrocious "help" for instance...

Itagaki is crazy
Having this interview translated by what I assume was a marketing flack probably evened out some of his lunacy. From the times I've seen him at events and the interviews I've read, it seems that he always wears a lizard skin jacket, sunglasses, jeans and boots. He's quite tall for a Japanese guy - over 6 feet with the boots on, so he has a certain impact. But that's just clothes - anyone can dress like a rockstar.
It's the way he interacts with people and the things he says when there's no minder around that lets you know he's totally insane. Check out Tim Roberts' account of meeting him at E3 http://www.livejournal.com/users/108/42763.html, or the Tokyopia interview.
Mind you, when I say that he's crazy, that's at least half-positive. He seems to pretty much do what he wants, and he's been successful enough that obviously Tecmo is happy to let him have his way with things. That means that his games have been designed with only one purpose in mind: making him happy. That's miles better than a crappy movie-license game, or some other forgettable game that's been designed by committee. Ninja Gaiden may be too hard, but it's certainly original - we could use more lunatics like Itagaki. -
Re:LiveJournal break down
Note that it's not suitable for single user install, so isn't actually in direct competition with any of those.
Some of these features require a paid membership.
Post API support: also supports the Blogger API
Post pings: IIRC can only ping weblogs.com

Comment RSS: no, but a paid user could hack up a dodgy per-post version

LiveJournal rules!
Well, the software that runs LiveJournal.com (let's call it LiveJournal, because that's its name) rules. It's infinitely configurable, because for one, it is designed that way, and for another, it is open source. It can be deployed on any website. See the Hopkins Weblogs, for example.
See my weblog on LiveJournal.com. What more does a blogger want?
I'm surprised they don't mention LiveJournal in that blog software chart of theirs. I have evaluated Movable Type, and I think LiveJournal is better.

Noticably absent is LiveJournal
I can scarcely think of any more scalable system than LiveJournal. (Free software under GPL, more info at FSF/UNESCO Free Software Directory. For one person ranting about Howard Dean, perhaps, it is overkill -- that's more Moveable Type or whatnot's field. But if you are wanting two blogs, or three or four, or 3216504 and counting, LiveJournal would appear to be the simplest and most powerful way to do it. Also there are plenty of clients available...LiveJournal for Windows, Xjournal for OS X, and many others for all operating systems.

Re:Why not sign email...
I'm proposing , more-or-less the same solution as your
better method
except filtering should be applied at the first possible opertunity based upon how much you trust the certificates of the senders.
In your 'better solution' what's to stop spammers changing keys all the time unless you have to pay someone for the key who then assigns you a level of trust.

Like Livejournal. They use Akamai for hosting userpics. This morning my buddy list was having trouble loading the images. (as they note here.)

Related issue
Network install and hard disk install no longer work the old way with Fedora Core 2 (via bootdisk.img and netdrv.img), for the simple reason that the kernel no longer fits on a floppy disk. But there are workarounds. I made some notes on this issue.

Re:In many poor...
I couldn't agree more.
I'm working in the South Pacific as an IT volunteer, and let me tell how, the things that FOSS makes possible are great.
A local NGO, which has a total of $0.00 to spend on hardware, is running a dial-on-demand Internet server with proper firewalling features on a Pentium 100 machine that they purchased in 1997.
This same organisation has just been chosen to pilot a project that will use HF radios to create whopping 1 Kbps email links between isolated villages in this island nation. FOSS is the *only* viable contender in terms of robustness, affordability and the ability to even run on the kind of low-cost, low-power equipment we need for this.
I just posted some observations on FOSS in development to my online journal yesterday, too.

You miss the point
Yes, there are options, but not having to rely upon an outside service for updating the content in your blog or gallery is what MovableType provides.
I agree that MovableType (and sixapart) should have the right to charge for their program. But going from free to crippled 70-600 dollar licenses is a bit of a shock to those of us who didn't see this coming.
Blogger or livejournal, etc are of course for people who don't want to get their hands dirty with setup and maintenance. It's a great service. But what happens if the service goes belly-up? Think mp3.com and the artists. While there's a great deal of minless drivel on many blogs, still others provide witty, insightful, funny, local, or even newsworthy content.
It's a shame that MovableType has deliberately alienated their community support and likely will end their own dominance over the weblog content management software.
For people starting out on weblogging, I agree that multiply, blogger, livejournal, or some such service is definitely worth a look.
For those of you already using MT and looking for alternatives, the ones that have been commonly mentioned in the past day may be worth checking out. For example, TextPattern, Drupal or Wordpress.
Don't like the free alternatives? MT's success came from community support. Do the same thing for these. Test them, report bugs, develop them, use them. Show MT that they're not the only game in town, just one of the most expensive. -
Another alternative
Livejournal.org hosts the codebase (GPL'd) used on Livejournal.com and other clone sites.

Re:Many Worlds Theory Invalidated
Oh, it gets better. Gotta love this comment for example. Using Google reveals a lot of similar responses. In other words, it's nonsense and we can all forget about it. Too bad that comment got moderated so high and now people that didn't bother to doublecheck will actually think that some QM interpretations have been invalidated.

Re:Blog? How about design notes?
Hear hear!
"Blogs"* have potential. Currently they are utterly disgusting because the whole thing regarding blogs and journals is ruined by boring people forcing their dull lives down our throats. Fortunately, the technology regarding journals is good and there have been some very good journals around. Now tell me, what's more interesting? A boring rand( 12, 50 ) year old (emo|goth|depressed) tosser from randomCity() ranting on about randomSubject() or having the creators of Google shed some light on the technical insides of Google? What about a journal where some people keep track of major (OS) projects? Gives one a view into what was considered during design, what was dropped, why it was dropped, what problems were encountered and so on. Even if you don't make your journals public, they'd make GREAT referrence material to improve oneself upon. After all, you learn the most from your own mistakes and if you can review the entire process instead of just the mistake itself, it ought to be more helpful.
*
... Change of name please. Blogs will forever be stained by the stupidity that is currently infecting them. That, and whoever made that word up should be hung, shot, burned, quartered and then REALLY hurt. -

Spirit and Opportunity on LiveJournal
For those who haven't seen it already, Spirit and Opportunity have LiveJournals. Spirit is a moody goth girl, while Opportunity is a perky teeny-bopper. I know I'll certainly miss them (or at least Spirit) when they're gone.
In other news, Spirit is really cute. -
