Re:Tricky EIRs
Let us assume that even if you could impregnate a female Mastiff with with Chihuahua sperm
We don't have to assume anything. Different breeds mate all the time and produce viable offspring. Poodles and Labradors are the current most famous generating the recently accredited Labradoodle. I personally have 3 lab mixes (Walker Coonhound, Border Collie, and Norwegian Elkhound) and we previously had a Dachshund/Coonhound. All common dogs are from the base Canine species (Canis lupus familiaris if you want to be technical), which is then in turn a sub-species of the Grey Wolf (Canis lupus). Wolf != Dog at the species level. Chihuahua == Mastiff at the species level. Chihuahua != Mastiff at the breed level.
Next time please understand the subject of your analogy before throwing it out. In fact if you had spent 5 seconds you'd see that your "impossible" mix is indeed quite possible.

That you don't know how to use a search engine either.
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=%22ronald+reagan+is+black%22
= 91 hits.
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=%22ronald+reagan+is+white%22
= 919 hits.
Result: Ronald Regan is white.

Re:Not a huge surprise...Additionally, here's another story produced by WebProNews, based on the RockPaperShotgun article produced a day earlier. From the story:
This week, Stephanie Perotti, Ubisoft’s worldwide director for online games, confirmed in an interview with Rock, Paper, Shotgun that Ubisoft has ditched always-on DRM. In fact, the company hasn’t implemented such tactics in over a year. Ubisoft’s policy is now to require only a one-time activiation when a game is first installed. In addition, the company now allows gamers to activate a game on as many PCs as they want. Perotti stated that Ubisoft changed its policy based on feedback from its customers.
"Whining" helped. "Creative protests" helped. Not buying Ubisoft's DRM-encumbered games helped.
Not going to bother posting more citations; I have decent karma already. I'll just leave this here and let you find some examples of your own.

Re:I'm not one for reddit, I must say
Completely agree - I like in the summer, it not getting dark until 8 or 9 and your sun isn't coming up at 4AM, and in then in the winter setting the clocks back so that the sun comes up at about 6-7 instead of around 8. Daylight Savings Time does exactly what it says - saves LIGHT for the DAY.
Most of us have computers, phones, and atomic (ahem really radio) clocks that update themselves - all I have to do is update the old alarm clock and the clock in my car.
Most modern calendar systems (such as Exchange) take timezones and Daylight Savings Time into effect, even across areas that observe DST at different times or across areas that don't observe DST.
So seriously, what is the worst that happens? You loose an hour of sleep? Go to bed earleir! You have to set forward or back a couple of older clocks? Boohoo, that takes, how long, under a minute per clock? You are late for work on Monday? Seriously, did you not realize that everything was off an hour on Sunday (argument doesn't hold, though, if you are like me and work on Sundays)?
I think people just like to moan and complain.
As for the original post, I am getting really pissed off at Ask Slashdot topics where the person could google the answer faster than they can type up a question to slashdot.
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+many+time+zones+are+there
add that to
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+many+different+calendars+are+there
In particular, on the second link, I found this:
http://www.hermetic.ch/cal_stud/lunarcal/types.htm
Which state there are over 40 different calendars in use
So, I got 40 time zones, and 40 different calendars.
Now, if you want to get technical, instead of adding them, you would multiply the two, as each calendar could be used in any of the 40 time zones.
40*40 = 1600 POSSIBLE variations across the planet.
Seriously, people, learn how to use Google!

Re:This could actually sink Chrome altogether
It's in all versions of Chrome. It's much, much more secure than ActiveX -- but that's mostly because ActiveX was not secure at all. NaCl was built from the ground up to be secure, within a sandbox with a contained instruction set.
It's not clear to me whether this ability to execute code is intended solely for Chrome OS, or whether it is intended for all versions of the Chrome browser
Did you even bother to Google what you were unclear on before blathering about your unclarity on the Internet? Here, let me help you with that... ah yes, here it is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Native_Client
The feature is enabled from version 14 of Chrome

I know google isn't "authoratative" but it is popular. Please find me an authoritative definition of "sport" which supports your assertion, or kindly just shut the fuck up. Sports do not require a "competitive" element
I presume you accept wikipedia, as you linked to it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport
"Sport (or, primarily in North America, sports) is all forms of competitive physical activity..."
"competitive activity." So, are you going to continue to insist that there is no "competitive" element in sport? I'm quoting from your own links. Did you even read them? -

Re:Well, of course.
Why the hell ELSE would you post a question on slashdot?
I think the point of the parent is that the question has this nice, fuzzy "I didn't do my research, please do it for me." feel, which will get you into trouble on any serious forum. One can even see it in the question. It asks: "Any fun, off-beat party apps this middle-aged suburban dad hasn't heard of?" But never lists which apps he has heard of.
The OP also asks for a ROM but never tells us the modell of tablet (except that it is 7'' and from MID, hope they have only one of those). Basically it asks at least two questions where IMHO the only answer a self-respecting nerd seeing the lack of research can give is LMGTFY:
- What custom ROMs are there for my device - Google leads in its first entry to xda-developers the ROM source.
- What MP3 player apps are there - (ignoring the play store) Google finds quite some
Mentioning Gentoo in a negative conotation doesn't help either (and no I am not using any beta ROMs either but neither do I compare them to Gentoo).

To my mind, provided that the algorithm doing the conversion is appropriately protected, pseudonymisation may be one good method of reducing the risk associated with the processing of personal data, protecting it in the event for a data breach, and thus be a form of security measure, but is unlikely to stop the data from being capable of identifying the individual, in the hands of the party carrying out the pseudonymisation.
With all respect, your mind and common sense are superseded by better minds:
Robust De-anonymization of Large Sparse Datasets
Our techniques are robust to perturbation in the data and tolerate some mistakes in the adversary’s background knowledge.
We apply our de-anonymization methodology to the Netflix Prize dataset, which contains anonymous movie ratings of 500,000 subscribers of Netflix, the world’s largest online movie rental service. We demonstrate that an adversary who knows only a little bit about an individual subscriber can easily identify this subscriber’s record in the dataset. Using the Internet Movie Database as the source of background knowledge, we successfully identified the Netflix records of known users, uncovering their apparent political preferences and other potentially sensitive informationDeanonymizing Mobility Traces: Using Social Networks as a Side-Channel
Location-based services, which employ data from smartphones, vehicles, etc., are growing in popularity. To reduce the threat that shared location data poses to a user’s privacy, some services anonymize or obfuscate this data. In this paper, we show these methods can be effectively defeated: a set of location traces can be deanonymized given an easily obtained social network graph.

Network de-anonymization task is of multifold significance, with user profile enrichment as one of its most promising applications. After the deanonymization and alignment, we can aggregate and enrich user profile information from different online networking services and make the bundled profiles available for end-users as well as third-party applications.

Re:Charge who? Google and Mozilla?
Post your bug reports or it didn't happen.
The bug trackers relevant to Chrome are public. You don't need me to post bug reports, you could just google any of the example areas I mentioned and find several different ones for yourself by looking at the first page of results.
It's a shame you didn't do that, but in a way you made my original point for me: far too many people come along every time this topic is raised on most Internet forums and just attack the critics in a knee-jerk reaction, instead of considering whether actually the criticism might be valid and making even the slightest effort to find out.

Re:166 entries?
Angry birds on a console wouldn't (IMO) do much good. I doubt anyone would play angry birds on a PC/Console.
While I did say "nobody" in my original post, I didn't mean it literally. For that matter, cut the rope is on the Windows 8 store (and I'm sure it is on other platforms). My second point addressed this issue: I don't think Angry birds for Xbox would make anyone thinking of buying a console choose that platform instead of a PS3. They choose Xbox for Halo. When you want people to buy a console, they look for big-name titles. And Angry birds lacks the complexity that makes game play on a console fun (compare it to GTA or any other major title).

If I owned a Mac, the first thing I would do is to investigate disabling automatic updates, remote control, and other internet access that I didn't approve of.
It's standard procedure. FFS, it's so standard, that even my sons do as much with all their devices. They demand that WHATEVER THE HELL they are running, it runs THE WAY THEY WANT IT to run.

Try and explain the missing enzymes there to the first 100 results on google, its not a fad. Its scientific fact that humans can eat raw-anything.
My personal favorite is salmon and if I could eat copious amounts of that on a daily basis cheaply I would cream my pants and love life. (a little over dramatic, but you get the abstract point I hope).
