Assuming you're not a troll, I can explain exactly what I need to do with USENET searches.

I am a small-time computer programmer (for my own enjoyment) and local technical expert (called upon for practically all Windows installations). I fiddle with Linux a lot - my computer has a 17.2G drive for bloated software like Windows 2000, and a 4.3G hard drive devoted entirely to Linux distros (PC PLUS in the UK is great with this [Mandrake 7.1 this month.]) I also do a bit of amateur spamhunting (you'll see me a lot on news.admin.net-abuse.email.)

One of my most used tools is Deja.com/usenet. I have it on my slashboxes. With deja.com, I can immediately search out whether this pernicious "Find Out About Any Poor Shmuck Fast Now" spam (I recieve it every week or so) has been posted to N.A.N-A.S yet. Also, if I have technical problems I need to solve, I call up Deja first. I don't search AltaVista, partly because I don't like AltaVista (I prefer Excite or Lycos) and because all Web search engines, especially when faced with computer support queries, don't successfully find what I want. Also, several big pr0n and other dubious sites will definitely use support queries in META tags to drive you off the route - I've had this happen to me before.

Therefore, services like Deja help me to find out about new drivers, or how to make my Sony tape drive work - they help solve problems. This is the entire purpose of Deja - not to make up a huge Britney Spears fan collection, but for technical information. And yes, there is a demand for a better engine (for a start, one that you don't have to click three different time-consuming links to move into a thread) - but at the moment, Deja and remarQ are all we've got. And thankfully, we have them.

I would guess that they would not consolidate the web sites. Each probably has loyal fans that would frown upon a change. Something similar happened to HotBot (www.hotbot.com) and Lycos (www.lycos.com). They are both online search engines, but it is obvious that they are owned by the same company (Lycos), yet each has maintained their original look and feel.

I certainly got my start on MySQL as did most others I guess. Truth be told, I got my real Unix DB start using mSQL but that's another story.
MySQL for many people is a great start. The reason there are so many MySQL installs out there is because it's just so darn easy rto get started with. I should no, I wrote a tutori al for it. The install is simple, accessing it is simple, and the SQL and data type are enough to get you off and running pretty easily.
Postgres on the other hand is, for the novice, more difficult to install.
While both DB's have an odd user auth system, postgres' is just that little bit more odd for the new user.

Having said all that, postgres I think is the best introduction for the user wanting more than MySQL but not ready for the commercial DB's. As alreqady pointed out, it has (finally) foreign key support, sequences, transactions, sub-selects and so on. I've found using views has been amazingly handy coming from MySQL. I can take a very complex join and tidy the whole thing up into a view. One criticism is that outer joins aren't implemented and you have to have something together using a UNION.
The other handy feature I like in postgres are the functions. Again they're not easy to get started in but you've got a choice of the language you want to write the thing in including C and tcl as well as pl/sql.
Finally my other joy with postgres is large object support. There are innumerable postings to mailing lists about how to store images and other binary data in MySQL. The usual reponse is to not do it and to merely store the path to the file. The lo_import and lo_export functions in postgres are simple and easy to use and accessing them via PHP is a snap.

Of course, people actually downloading the whole human genome probable wouldn't worry about this, but couldn't they use a better compression format than .zip? I bet using bzip2 or rar would shave a couple of hundred MBs off of that 753MB file. Also, the differences in compression techniques would be interesting to see on a large group of files mainly consisting of G, A, C, and T. -- demiurge You find a file that appears important and obliterate it from memory!!! Score one for the downtrodden hacker!

Huffman would better compression algorithm in my opinion. Huffman uses a tree to determine which encodings to use for each symbol. The encodings might be similar to this:

G -- 00
A -- 01
T -- 10
C -- 11

This would only work for the .fa files, but .fa files can contain "N"s also. If you just want to browse the Genome, look through the pieces directory. .

I've got one of those Intellimouse Explorers (the huge silver ones with the superfluous tail light and like three extra buttons; well, what the hell, here's a http://www.microsoft.com/Mouse/explorer.htm link) and sites that won't let you back out are an incredible annoyance. See, two of the buttons on there serve as Forward/Back (respectively) while browsing the web, and after about 20 minutes of using them, I was hooked. You wouldn't believe how simple (and remarkably intuitive) to navigate with your thumb. Now if I could just find a good use for those buttons in Half-Life... I mean, sure, it's easy enough to hold down the back button and select the page before the offending site, but that would require moving my cursor over six or so linear inches of desktop space. Isn't that just a little bit unreasonable? No? Ah well.

What about the Lycos MP3 search engine? How is MP3Board different from that... other than the fact that MP3Board tends to return links to mp3s that actually work.

Shouldn't RIAA have filed the lawsuit against Lycos first? The concept is the same, implementation is a bit different. And Lycos had their mp3 search engine installed for a long time... way before Napster.

...is what the RIAA is trying to do by shutting down Napster. What I find amusing is that it's very possible that they have no idea how solid the MP3 distribution system is outside of Napster.

As some above have said, (and I'm not trying to be redundant) there are many other places to get MP3s, most of which existed before Napster.
Oth.net used to be an amazing source for them by listing searchable FTP sites full with albums and singles. There's always other less dependable websites like AudioGalaxy.com and LycosMP3. There are all BIG, well-known WWW sites, which, although not quite 100% reliable are well established. This does not cover the thousands of pages you can find if you go to Hotbot and search for 'mp3'.
Then, of course, there's IRC. Here again, there are hundreds of communities across dozens of servers all working on one thing: getting/trading MP3s. (My recommendation is to try some of the IRC servers on the Eris Free Network).
Then of course, you've got other Napster-like clients like GNUtella, FreeNet, and Globalscape's CuteMX (most of these share more than MP3 files).
And college students will always have the trusty, reliable LANs where students share their large collections.

Ok, so you knew this already. Bottom line: MP3 is not going away, not now, and especially not at the hands of the RIAA. If they are only half as smart as their lawyers are blockheaded, they would work with some of these companies, as well as organizations like the Frauenhoffer Institute to develop a replacement for the MP3 file format. One that maybe sounds twice as good for half the file size, so you can get 320kbps encoded songs for 3MB or so. New technology is the way to fight MP3. If enough people think it's worth it to pay $0.50 for a song that sounds twice as good and can be downloaded in half the time, guess what? They'll be more likely to get that song as opposed to an .mp3 file. Relatively secure encoding already exists. The band Phish released MP3s that you could listen to for free three times, then a window popped up that reuqired you to enter a credit card number and pay some small amount of money to continue listening to the song (apparently, an executable was appended to the WAV file before it was encoded... You couldn't remove this prompt, or extract a WAV file with WinAmp).

If Lars is reading this, spend money on getting new media developed, not on paying your lawyers. You may win against Napster, but not against MP3.

I read that the release of Netscape 6.0 will be so much like IE5 that some proprietary tags made specifically for Netscape 4 will NOT work.

My question, then, is how in the world are we supposed to maintain multi-browser compatibility? Or should we even try anymore? I've been trying to steer my clients far clear of 'fancy' stuff by telling them that not everyone will see it the way we do...but with everyone else doing it, that argument is beginning to slip. Everybody wants Flash, and Quicktime, and JavaScript...
I grow weary of fighting in the Browser Wars... ;-)

This topic of napster is driving me up a wall. What napster provides is esentially a search of links to files on other individuals computers, which in and of itself is completely legal. They do primarily the same thing that mp3.lycos.com or a quick multimedia search for MP3's at AltaVista would do as well. Now it may provide an easier way of doing this by making much of the process transparent, but it is in no way different. Why not sue these other companies for providing links to the information? Because linking is LEGAL . And once Napster proves to the courts that they are not hosting any copywritten material on their servers, they have simply a database that is similar to the ones above, the RIAA and the other ignorant bands may get it through their thick skulls that they can't get companies like napster for this.

Topclick has 61 results for "web-based project management software" (with quotes included); Google also returned 61 for the same query, although the order was different.

As for canceling the Service or getting a free service like NetZero, FreeI, TheSimpsons, Lycos, Altavista, or BlueLight you are forced into this horrid agreement. Not to mention what if you own a cable modem and want to just network the box into the home lan. Can't do that.

I actually can see the article in maximum PC's "Watchdog" right now ... Netpliance will soon be the enemy that once stood in the place of WebTv ... BTW why has no one hacked one of those yet?

sorry i can't, you see IE5 is broken, ie it do not use CSS to do layout, it uses XSL...
why IE sucks..

I don't hate Katz. I am, however, extremely frustrated by his lack of insight, which imho reflects upon the entire Slashdot community.

I come to Slashdot almost every day. I started coming here when I became overwhelmingly frustrated by seeing conventional media outlets pander to the masses. I would read a newspaper and see a statement by a politician or marketing exec, then do the math and find that he was talking out of his ass; on Slashdot, this behavior is immediately corrected by hundreds of posts explaining in excruciating detail why such and such is blatantly incorrect. I like to read posts by people who know what they are talking about; I have a couple of dozen user pages bookmarked just so I can see what they think on exciting issues. Since I happen to know things about some issues, and have imho well defined, rational arguments to support most of my political and social philosophies, I therefore enjoy posting when I see the opportunity; I can identify with what Jon must feel, because I have had some searing AC replies which have hurt me deeply while at the same time enjoying a greater number of buoying emails. From the relatively few negative emails I have received, and the emotional trauma associated with those particulars, I can tell you that if I received the hundreds of negative replies that Katz has received, I would have moved on long ago. For this he has my utmost respect.

Jon Katz' hellmouth series was initially a major point of interest to me; I had seen both sides of the high school popularity wars and was profoundly moved by some of the insights revealed there. He immediately jumped out at me as a "deep thinker", someone whose ideas were good and therefore someone whose opinion mattered. I cared what he said. After the first hellmouth, I waited impatiently for more wisdom, because I crave insight. I wanted to read the words of someone I respected, expand them and argue against them to achieve a higher level of comprehension. Unfortunately, such gems were rare. Not non-existent, but sporadic and inadequate.

In the months since his first posts, I have become abjectly bored with his work. I have not seen anything which really made me think, nothing which makes me run to the library and delve into the wisdom of the ages, the way posts by amphigory or kintanon or fable2112 or countless others routinely do. I have to say that Katz has neither challenged my beliefs nor caused me to think in anything other than a cursory manner in at lest several months- and if this is true for other Slashdot users, who possibly come here for the same reasons as me, then that could explain a lot of the hostility. When a smart person is expecting stimulating conversation, and receives nothing but shallow blather, hostility is a natural result.

I think that a lot of the hostility currently reserved for Katz would be reduced if he were really as profound of a thinker as he presumes himself to be. If he were Karl Marx, Bertrand Russell or Ayn Rand, people would respond differently--because regardless of whether or they agreed with what he was saying, the content which would come with the posting would provide fertile grounds for argument. As it is, people read a 3000 word essay and come away with only one thought: "What did I waste my time with that for? I could have received equally eloquent commentary from the editorial staff of the small town newspaper." The lack of intellectual substance leads to ad hominem attacks against the author due to sheer exasperation.

I think Katz could be better. I know he has written good stuff; I think he just needs to take a little bit more time preparing his work, making it truly profound instead of the mass of tepidity it is today. If he does this, then I think his problems will solve themselves. That is, if Slashdot would just do away with AC posting...

I guess another solution would be for someone better to start posting to Slashdot; that way we could get our intellectual fixes somewhere else and Katz could be our Spice Girls, good for a few minutes of entertainment but nothing requiring deep reflection. (You listening, David Brin? I doubt it; after the way Slashdot treated you the last time you posted something I wouldn't listen to us either... Neal? /. got you at least one fan, how about giving back? Anyone else? Please?)

Apparently people are a little on edge around here lately.... Legality issues aside, there are a growing number of search sites that are "endorsing" pirated music by way of having huge indexes of MP3s, many of which, undoubtedly are pirated. One that sticks out in my mind is the MP3 search on Lycos, powered by Fast Search and Transfer ASA, the same people that brought us AllTheWeb. Then there is Napster, an MP3 lovers dream (sorry to keep referencing this ad nauseam.) There was much publicity, at least among the /. Community about the suit filed against our buddies over at Napster, no doubt it'll get thrown out (it may have already, I'm not sure) because there is the concept that Napster is simply providing a vehicle for search, location and subsequent download of MP3s, and never takes physical, or even legal possession of the data. Basically, they, and other such sites, services and software, are conduits and, in acting as such, are not violating any law. I think there is a distinct possibility that we might begin to see the tides turn on these types of issues. After all, how many times in the past year or two have we been hearing about class action suits against other types of "conduits" for other activities. Gun manufacturers, tobacco companies, automobile manufacturers. Although there is a substantial difference between manufacturing a weapon used in a deadly crime and providing an avenue to procure a music track that you do not own and possibly do not intend to pay for, where is the line drawn. I am not predicting that there will be huge class action suits by large numbers of music artists or record concerns, but noting a potential for some legal actions to at least by subject to closer scrutiny by the judicial system. Until then, there is going to be a lot of back and forth on issues such as encryption technology, legal liability for sites linking to and referencing certain MP3s and other media files, and there's going to be a lot of money to be made as an intellectual property and copyright attorney. The industry is too new for self regulation, whether this means that the government will step up its battle or technological advances on protection technology will speed up to stop the gap remains to be seen. All of this of course, IMHO

AT&T (formally TCI) has cable internet access in the area. They're still in the process of deploying it in some areas. However, I think the price is pretty reasonable ($40/month, free first month and installation) and the performance is incredible.

I think the main problem is a lack of high-tech companies. Pittsburgh definitely has some, including Marconi (formally FORE Systems), Lycos, Black Box, the recently IPO'd FreeMarkets, and for those of you wanting to get in on a promising startup, there's the newly formed Spinnaker Networks.

Pittsburgh isn't a technology city yet, but it's getting there.

Stats: CMU grad, worked here consulting for a few years, moved away, moved back.

Having lived here off and on since '83, I can honestly say I like "da burgh". There're good normal and more adventerous restaurants, mainstream and alternative cinema, good Rails To Trails, really excellent public theatre (Pittsburgh Public Theatre) and the Pittsburgh Symphony (site done by a friend of mine, FWIW), low traffic compared to other metro areas (Philly, NYC, Baltimore, and LA from direct experience), nice people, good high speed access in a growing number of neighborhoods, etc., etc. There's also an advocacy group of non-codgers trying to work on relevant issues for geeks and other young professionals.

And to note a few success stories: Fore Systems (now Marconi), Lycos, Free Markets Online (woulda liked to have a piece of that IPO), the Seagate magnetics research center, a mysterious whiz-bang startup, etc.

On the political scene, the local county (Alleghany) just switched from a three-headed-dog-of-county-commisioners system to a single county executive. UPitt, CMU, Pittsbugh, and Alleghany County are starting to cooperate better in attracting business and supporting spinoffs and startups. CMU's actually figured out that the wild-eyed innovator rarely makes the best startup CEO and is trying to support startups/spinoffs with more serios business support. Pitt's learned that lesson as well.

Now that's not to say that we don't have 'issues', like tax structure, crappy roads, a high codger factor, but things are definitely on the mend around here. We haven't gotten to the point of choking on our own success: housing's, food nad clothing cheap, traffic's low (relatively), no more choking pollution. We've got good and growing support for ADSL (which brings you this missive), cable modems, and CPDP support.

All said, I'm glad I moved here and it looks like things are going to be moving in the right direction very nicely over the next 10 years or so. Meanwhile, we don't need to cope with the crap you need to cope with in longer-standing "high tech" areas.

Agreed - the problem as far as he music companies are concerned is the lack of ability to stop this kind of activity. As gooboy pointed out - stereos can duplicate cassettes. BorgDrone suggests that FTP and HTTP programmers shold also be sued for providing tools for duplicting illegal material, and what about CDRs? It's so easy to duplicate material of any type now - cassette, CD, MP3 etc etc - the music companies are just over frustrated that there's nothing they can do to prevent it, so are venting their frustrations on those people that visibly going against their wishes.

Didn't a similar case come up with Lycos' MP3 search engine? (Lycos) that never went anywhere? Same argument - they aren't breaking the law, but simply supplying tools that could be used to break the law. You can't sue for that - you'd have to sue makers of hammers, guns, and anything else used by criminals.

In a related story published in April on Wired, the use of redirect hyperlinks to track email by Deja is described.

Deja is basically tracking your creation of an email response to an article on their site.

According to the article:

"Deja News could also record -- and log -- the use of the link, the IP address of the sender, and the addressee's email [address]."

The ACLU has some rather pithy comments on Deja's practices in this area, including the possibility that Deja is in violation of the Electronics Communications Privacy Act by intercepting these transactions.

Not to worry though, Deja is a member of TrustE.
