Re:not competitive
According to MacRumors.com the iTMS Europe will have songs for 1.29 Euros - but that includes a 19.5% sales tax. The [fixed] amount to be given to artists is 0.80 euro.
Yes, more expensive than iTMS USA, but the USA price doesnt include a sales tax - apparently in states where there is a sales tax that is added on top.

The link to the MacRumors article is here MacRumors iMac G5 Typo
It was posted on January 9th 2004, I noticed it on the macworld site a few Months prior to that but most rumor sites picked it up in January when MacRumors did. -

TIM ARANGO is full of FUDThe guy who wrote the Post article is terribly biased in my biased opinion.
He wrote that:some of the usage rules - such as how many times users can burn downloads - have been altered.
Thanks for stating this in a way that does not make it obvious there are still unlimited burns of any song...and also a big thanks for not mentioning the loosening of the restriction of # of PCs & Macs music can be shared on.
In addition, Timmy shared that:For example, a Pepsi marketing campaign announced last year that was supposed to give away 100 million downloads has resulted in only 5 million downloads by Pepsi drinkers, according to a source.
The implication is that iTunes was not something people were interested in.
There are other examples of his FUD statements, such as covering Sony's new service without the mention of their restrictions (if you own a MiniDisc player or MemoryStick music device raise your hand).
And finally, this gem:A spokesperson for iTunes was not available for comment.
Got a source for that one Jimmy? Steve Jobs was just quoted refuting such a statment.
Apple's willingness to allow some singles to be priced higher than 99 cents indicates the company feels empowered by its current success in the download market and sees a chance to boost profits from the sales of digital music. -
What about virtual desktops?
There is a rumor going on about virtual desktops.

Apple Lossless encoding
Some initial, unofficial reports are coming in that a 4mb AAC translates to about 30mb Apple Lossless.

It lowered my signal
I seem to get 0-2 bars less of signal strength on average than I did before the update. For instance, now I don't get any signal out on the patio when I easily did before. I'd think this was likely coincidence except others on this MacRumors thread have noticed the same thing.

Re:LGarageBand?
So has Sound Track. And, no it is not the same thing. Plus, they are not exactly giving Sound Track or Acid Pro away. --> Read up <--
Clearly there are a number of MIDI loop programs that have been available for PCs and Macs since the 1980s. Garage Band is aimed at the non-professional, but certainly has the capability to produce commercial grade loops.

Re:G5 Laptops
Apple has a relatively constant rate of product updates, with the average for powerbooks being 171 days. This would mean that, chances are in 6 months there will be a new model, which should be G5 based barring any significant hurdles. However, it's generally safer to avoid first generation products, as they typically have bugs that get worked out in the first revision.
All of this to say that, now is really the best time to buy a powerbook, as chances are it will be at least a year before we get bugfree G5 powerbooks... but if you absolutely must wait 6 months, there should be something new by that time.
-
Re:Damn! Damn! Damn!
Actually, Mac Rumors has a buyer's guide that tells you when product updates are expected.

Re:Beh
Game consoles are supposed to be simple, turn on - insert disc - play game. Sounds like you might as well just buy a computer.
Which is why Sony also make the Vaio range of AV computers, and have also been working with Apple, arguably the current masters of digital convergence.Personally I've taken the most complicated middle road and put a Mod Chip in my XBox, installed the GPL Xbox Media Centre and stuck it on my mixed system home network, so it can now play an crazy number of media formats.

hummm..
Irony (yes, the proper usage of the word) is seeing a link for an earlier story, more doom and gloom for Apple.
Honestly, more power to Apple. I thought (hoped?) the mini was a mistake price wise, but a second, honest look told me this was more like sour grapes (or apples, even ? ). They did their market research, they got the product out of the door and perhaps most importantly, they cashed in on the almost unbelievable hype surrounding iPods and Apple products.
Hey, I'm a geek. I don't necessarily like mass market toys and my values (and what is attractive to me) may be different from the mass market. I *like* Apple succeeding with this, because the next generation could be a. cheaper b. have more storage capacity
They might even make the next models more attractive, price wise, for a poor student. I hope they sell a million of 'em

Re:Powerbook rumors?
MacRumors Buyers Guide is a good place to look for a general idea. They should be releasing a revision with faster processors and a few minor improvements in the next month or two.

Re:Nice but not quite "innovative"So go get a bigger iPod. Or wait a little while, and you'll be able to get the next iPod.
I have a HUGE collection of MP3s/AACs, and I have yet to run into space problems on my 15 gig iPod...

Mc Donalds...
Anderson also hints that there are more alliances in the works (beyond Pepsi, HP and AOL), but that there is nothing to announce yet.
A previous rumour doing the rounds was a 100 million free song deal with McDonalds, Which you can find here.
McDonalds later said there 'Was no deal to announce', but did not actually deny the rumour.
The revenue and publicity from such a deal would certainly put iTunes further in the lead in the online music store biz.
But perhaps Coke might not be so happy with that. -
Re:Still no USB printing fix
don't fret too much. that was already announced to be coming in the 10.3.3 update. check out macrumor's post about that nearly a week ago.
Key changes listed include improved file sharing and directory services, PostScript and USB printing, font management, updated Disk Utility, DVD Player, Image Capture, Mail and Safari applications and updated drivers. -

Definintely charging for celebrity
Apple's online store is charging $2399 for refurbed dual G5s, and the student store's price for a new dual G5 is $2699, $100 less than the MacMall refurbs from Tech. You can even take $26 more off for getting rid of the internal mode, which the supercomputer refurbs don't have either.
Even if you add the extra 512 megs of RAM from Apple's site (where prices aren't the best), these Va Tech refurbs are only $100 less than what a student would spend on the same box new. Not to mention these 2 GHz duallies are rated as "Buy only if you need it - Approaching the end of a cycle" on the Macrumors buyers' guide page.
So not a deal at all if you're a student (though I have to think students at Va Tech could get the inside track on the boxes -- anyone know?) and not a great price for a refurb if you're Joe Schmoe. And not a box with great longevity, relatively speaking, either, if Macrumors has the lifecycle pegged.
Wait for a processor speed bump unless you're dying to own a little bit of celebrity. -

Re:typo?Well, the rumor sites I've been to (AppleInsider and MacRumors) all talked about possible 2GB *and* 4GB iPod's.
The 2GB model, according to the rumor sites, was suppose to be priced between $99-$129 while the 4GB model was suppose to be $149-$179.

Anecdote of Possible Amusement
A while ago in a far off land, I noticed in someone's sig in a forum a link to see his desktop. Seems he had a script to give a live shot of it every time someone hit his box. (He was running Apache on OS X)
I thought this was interesting, so I hit refresh every couple seconds. I noticed he was looking at porn, he had quite a bit. Also he was in an IRC chat at the same time. Some Mac Clan or something. Then I realized this would probably slow down his box considerably. So I kept refreshing. I hit refresh and see the goatse.cx warning page. He opens up TextEdit and types "Whoever the fuck is watching me you're lucky goatse.cx is down!"
... and there was much laughter. -

Codes = 10 characters
Some people have already gotten their hands on the iTunes promotional bottles of Pepsi. The code looks like it's 10 characters. Only letters are visible in this image of a cap.

WSJ quotes youGuess you saw that you were quoted elsewhere...
"While several have argued concerns about the price, one Wall Street Journal Column (Paid) offers an alternative perspective:
We don't want to sound like some annoying old relative, but these critics missed the rather elementary fact that different people care about different things. For every buyer of an MP3 player who cares about capacity, there's another one who cares about size. Or style. Or both.
.....And for plenty of music fans there's no real difference between 1,000 songs and 3,750 -- they're both "enough."
As one Slashdotter who saw the light wrote, some people "can't justify $299 just for space, but might justify $249 for style.""

90nm, where smaller is definitely better.
The Xserve tech specs pdf, pointed out by MacRumors indicates that the 90nm G5 has arrived (okay, will arrive in 6-8 weeks).
I am dismayed that Steve did not take the needs of obsessive geeks like myself into account when he chose to skip of the 90nm tidbit and the XGrid beta in today's keynote.
Hopefully there are even more omissions that will be uncovered in the next few days of MacWorld. -

Yes, that's true, but remember, this is the same guy who was whining about Linux's organizational structure because of the SCO fiasco. Mac Rumors had this story a few weeks before Cringley did.
