Re:Why?
I hope you showed him Meebo.

Re:Guess I'll be running hosted apps in Firefox

Might I suggest Meebo?

purely browser-based Meebo ?
try http://www.meebo.com/Meebo ?

Meebo
For that Web 2.0 glamour, Meebo.com runs the popular IM services on a webpage and supports video chat via Adobe Flash and v4l/v4l2 support. http://meebo.com/
-
for those with problems
meebo.com is an online client, works fine for me because i don't have the patched pidgin version

Re:Where's the meat?Where's iChat or am I supposed to keep spending like $0.15 a text for SMS. meebo

Re:Finally!
I don't have an iPhone, but my guess is that meebo probably works in Safari:

Re:This may be true...
My iPhone took 55 seconds. EDGE is good enough on sites that don't have a lot of big images... it really seems to choke on those. Sites like Kotaku bring my iPhone to its knees. But I mostly use the EDGE to do web-based MSN chat and email, and EDGE works well for those applications.

Re:My school's network sucks :/
Actually, I know of at least one school that DOES block everything but HTTP. Well, sort of. They actually block every port except for port 80. Even then, some protocols are blocked (like AIM). I've had quite the adventure these past eight weeks trying to get around the limitations. Fortunately, some awesome people started up http://www.meebo.com/ for my IM needs, and Gentoo includes emerge-webrsync as an alternative to emerge --sync. Still, it's terribly annoying. If my home university did the same, I'd seriously consider moving off-campus. Students pay a large sum of money to live in the dorms and apartments provided by the University (~$6k/year). Part of that money goes toward funding the Internet connection. At the moment, the only type of traffic that they throttle is streaming video. That's enough. I don't need my games throttled, too.

Re:First Application . .
http://www.meebo.com/ - Meebo works with my iPhone. Supports AIM, Yahoo, GTalk, MSN.

AIM is Top Dog?
We hopefully will add other popular instant messaging clients in the future but for now AIM is the top dog so we started there.
For teenage girls, maybe. GTalk is "top dog" for professionals as it's built right into GMail. That, IMHO, is a much better solution than having to install 500+ IM products. And if I really need to contact a teenage girl^W^W^W someone on AIM, there's always Meebo!

Re:Here's what happens a month later...
Ever heard of AJAX?
Scratch that. Ever used any Google website other than their search engine? Ever posted on someone's Facebook wall? Ever used Meebo (real-time IM as a web app)?
It's very simple to write web applications that easily handle all the situations you mentioned - except for possibly the "Can you have this interface with a local app?" setting, which isn't all that hard to do with a bit of Java and its JavaScript, or perhaps a native-code stub that loads the settings and sends them to the server.
AJAX is pretty fast, if you have a decent server and your scripts are written efficiently. You should try it sometime. -
A few random thoughts
Here are some thoughts I've had in the last couple weeks.
Success:
- Will it be a success? Yes. Is it pricey? Yes. Is it gorgeous? Yes. And the price will eventually drop, just like the iPod did. It's Apple's famous method: release a really nice, almost perfect product for a bunch of money, sell a bunch to the first batch of buyers; then, when that supply is exhausted, improve it, drop the price, sell again to the next round who weren't willing to buy the first time. Lather, rinse, repeat. (Note: don't look for a widescreen, touchscreen, iPod until MAYBE September for the 2007 Xmas season; more likely, you'll have to wait until Spring 2008. Apple won't let a nice iPod cannibalize sales they'll get to people who buy the iPhone MOSTLY because they want a widescreen iPod. Oh, and by the way--current iPods have 4:3 screens. (1.33:1.) All Apple's computers are 16:10. (1.6:1.) The iPhone, like the original PBG4, is 3:2. (1.5:1.) So: what shape should iTMS movies be?)
- BUT--the iPod wasn't a success just because it was pretty. It really is a better, easier-to-use MP3 player than anything else out there for most people. The iPhone will ONLY succeed if the touchscreen system works as well as Steve says it does. I can tell it'll be mostly great just by looking--a regular touchscreen could easily handle 90% of the single-finger action he demo'ed--but I'll have to see the keyboard in person to become a believer on that.
- will Apple work out a deal with Cingular to offer a reasonable data plan? No one will be happy with the Internet Communicator of the Future if it costs $100/month to do anything with. For this to really, really work, there has to be reasonably-fast, reasonably-priced data. If it becomes a situation of "Oh, I can't use Safari until I get to Starbucks or Panera" that will be a big buzzkill.
- will they meet their goals? They said they want to sell 10 million phones--have 1% of the market--in 18 months. (God, that sounds like so many WWW business plans I heard in 1995-97--"If we could just get 1% of all web users to visit our site...") That sounds good on the one hand, given that they want 1% of a billion phones, BUT--Cingular only has 60M customers. Is the iPhone so great that ONE SIXTH of Cingular's customer base will spend $500? If not, are that many people going to get out of contracts and switch carriers in the next 18 months? I'm not so sure. Like I said, I really think the iPhone will be a success, but their expectations are pretty high.
Other thoughts:
- no iChat! no iChat A/V! How LAME! Either a) it's part of the deal not to step on Cingular's toes by offering anything like VOIP, or b) it's waiting for Rev B. Unfortunately, my money's on A. Well, at least you can use the browser to access Meebo.
- Proximity sensor--nice. But I hope that's not one of their patents. My Canon XTi turns off the screen when you put it up to your face--and it already exists. ;-)
- Apple will need to add 'Cingular' and 'iPhone' to Leopard's spellcheck dictionary. :-)
- I'll pick one up in a couple rev's just to have a decent browser. Despite having twice as many pixels as the iPhone, browsing on my Axim mostly sucks. -
Check out meebo.com and other sites with your ...
With the exception of keyboard support (if there is any, let me know
:-) ), the Wii's Opera browser is perfect for "web 2.0" sites like Meebo.
Go check it out. http://meebo.com. You can sign in immediately from the page to AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Gtalk, ICQ, and Jabber, or you can sign up, create a profile, and all of your IM identities will get stored in the site for single sign-on.
The only bad part is trying to type using an on-screen keyboard.
What other nifty sites lend themselves to the Wii? -
Re:What's next?
What happens for companies that don't host their own e-mail, particularly smaller companies?
Not to mention, how will they store the IMs done via Meebo?
-
Meebo?
I used to use GAIM, but now I greetly prefer meebo ( http://www.meebo.com/ ), an IM embedded in your browser (with AJAX).
But no files transfer, nor video or audio! But freakly useful! -
Re:SlashDottedWhat is this telling us?
- Most of those toolbars are about search. Is finding things on the Internet still this hard?
- I've seen people with 4-5 toolbars installed and loving it. How do people deal with all that clutter, when people can be shown to improve with streamlined User Interfaces?
- A large amount of graphics design was put into 'cute.' The Bonzi Buddy 'thing' nonwithsanding, do people really think that kittens = cute implies kittens = harmless? Cute was invented by babies so we wouldn't throw them away on the first, second or third night-of-all-screaming followed by the endless stream of steaming stinky poo. Considering the massive carpet saturation a kitten can cause when denied litterbox access, when does cute not equal trying to harm you?
- Some of these were IM feature enhancers (smiley.com?) which begs the question, beyond Meebo, why is there such a draw for IM-features via your web browser? Do online forms suck so much they need
:-) and ;-} and ;-P liberally scattered about? (Or do I just frequent the wrong forums?)
I know that Microsoft Windows is a proprientary product. And it is mearly part of selling Microsoft Office. So Windows only ships with the most basic, often crippled, software (save what channel partners can pay to put on the CD.) But when does adding one more toolbar to IE (or firefox/Opera/etc) reach the tiping point? At what point do we neede a dedicated program with it's own feature-specific UI and application-specfic workflow? - Most of those toolbars are about search. Is finding things on the Internet still this hard?

Talk to your damn kids
No kid wants to hear about sex from their parents, and no parents want to tell their kids about sex. You know what? At 12, you need to start, at 15 or 16, you need to be done. Just do it, and it'll be over with!
"I know you're coming onto that age where you're interested in girls, maybe guys. Now, you aren't allowed to have sex with them, but because it happens, I want you to know I won't punish you, I want you to tell me. And I want to tell you about safety. Condoms blah blah blah. Men over 17(or 18, depending on your state) blah blah blah. Men over 50, blah blah blah. Sexual predators online, blah blah blah.." and then go buy the kid some pr0n, whichever kind he likes, gay or straight, and don't talk about it for another week or two, don't mention it unless the kid does, and go from there. That way it's over with, it's out in the open, and you just did OMFG bought the kid pr0n, so nothing really seems that much further out.
Yes, you're kid will have sex around 15 or 16. No, you can't stop it, not without making the kid's life miserable. You can help it.
As far as IM'ing, if you are going to monitor, tell them, but realize it's stupid.
https://www.meebo.com/
Oh, meebo blocked? Anonymous proxy, with ssl, and there ya go. No, an informed kid is way better than a frightened kid or a kid living under constant surveillance. -
Re:also you have to sit waiting for the page 2 red
Aside from GMail, here are some Ajax sites that are MORE usable thanks to Ajax: * http://maps.google.com/ * http://www.meebo.com/ * http://www.kayak.com/ * http://www.writely.com/

Re:Security
For Yahoo Messenger and other IM programs, there are JavaScript clients like Meebo that have garnered a good reputation for being trustworthy. (How do you know it's secure? You don't, of course, but you don't do anything secure over IM anyway)
Similarly, it's only a matter of time before the MySpace cottage industry cranks out a few JavaScript programs to read and reply to MySpace messages, post to blogs, and whatever other services MySpace offers. -
Re:EyeOS
Still, I can see how it would appeal to non-geeks away from home - and it's not much different to placing your trust in online mail, online shopping or online tax return services - all of which have a healthy take up and get a splodge of your personal data.
And what do people do away from home? Check email? Practially all mail services have a web based client these days. What else? IM? Try http://www.meebo.com/ . And anyone with more elaborate needs will most likely have a notebook computer with them when traveling. So what is the point?

Head on over to http://meebo.com/ for web based I/M that hits the major networks. Great to get around company firewalls too.

One missing feature...
When I was at work, I decided to give Google Spreadsheets a shot (it wasn't for anything critical, just some simple calculations). I noticed one feature that, surprisingly, was not implemented--as far as I know, Google Spreadsheets can't merge cells vertically. Cells can only be merged horizontally. I ended up having to use Excel because of this one tiny missing feature. However, it's still in beta, and I am really impressed with what they've done. It's the second-coolest AJAX app out there (the first being Meebo).
Keep up the good work, Google!

Re:IM
RD/VNC from the top of a mountain to my home desktop machine
That's overkill. Even if the service offers only a HTTP proxy, there are still methods to do IM over HTTP. -
Some Apps kill allready
Iv'e found some apps that allready kill their software counterparts. http://meebo.com/ is an IM client that I use at home and at the office because of its portability and ability to function over trillian or other IM clients. A killer app is something that should do it for YOU not the market as a whole. I swear by Meebo but other AJAX apps fall short. Microsofts "Live Office" is grand for the avarage user, but he tech community will find it lacking... it is all about useage for YOU.

Re:empty computers
I disagree. Once they open up Gaim or Kopete (or, even easier, open up Firefox/Konqueror/some other *nix browser and load AIM or Meebo), then they'll be chatting on their machines.
Nothing will get in the way of high schoolers/ college students and their IM/MySpace/Facebook/whatever hit of the day. Unless you give them a command line, but if they find naim....

No, we hadn't. But we do now and will add it to our blocked site list...

Re:I foresee....
I know that I have said this before but if you want a web-based chat client you really ought to check out meebo. Quite impressive really...

Check out Meebo
Meebo has already been offering AJAX access to AIM/ICQ, Yahoo IM, Jabber, GTalk and MSN networks for some time now. You should go check it out now.

Re:IM Banned
hmm... haven't heard of http://www.meebo.com/ yet, have you?
IM with AJAX goodness :) -
wow
Its called AJAX and its not just some technology that script kiddies use. It is a USEFUL technology that allows us to get information from a server without needing to reload the page. Now while this is not a complete definition of it, it covers a lot of what AJAX is for. You CAN however group all of the people who have little clocks made of text that follow you cursor around, as script kiddies. The tasteful use of AJAX and Javascript (thats repetitive) can make a site more appealing to the end user. Sites like http://meebo.com/ use AJAX to create a never before seen product.

Re:Just don't use their client
of course there is allways http://meebo.com/meebo too.

Meebo
I use Meebo.com for my messenger. It lets me log in to AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, Google Talk, Jabber, and MSN in a web-based, java-free session. It actually encrypts your passwords, unlike some.
-
Meebo Anyone?
this is perfect for people not travelling with their own computer or at work where you can't install a client
http://www15.meebo.com/ -
Re:Each Protocol Has Its Good Points
Personally, I use MSN but am moving many friends and colleagues over to Skype. Skype is encrypted and also allows voice conversation. Excellent stuff.
Also look at the http://www.meebo.com/ site where you can use MSN/AIM/Yahoo/Jabber all at the same time over a web interface. Don't slashdot them! -
.... not having to install any software
-
The Meebo Alternative.
And for those who want to use these IM clients but can't from work, there's always Meebo. Pick on AJAX all you want, but I can IM on MSN, Yahoo, Google, and AIM through port 80.
