Re:Provide better samples
You have a very good point. From my experience as a predominantly indie folk (music genres are odd and everybody interprets them differently, but i don't want to be vague here) listener, you will find the music of new artists first on their own page (normally MySpace) then on YouTube and once they become more popular as a torrent. Let me give an example: Haruko is an indie folk artist from Germany (no association) who released her first record about a year ago. You can find 3 songs on her MySpace page and multiple videos on YouTube where you have to search for 'haruko folk' because of the ubiquity of the name. You will however have a hard time finding her album (wild geese) as a torrent or
.rar (there might be places, but searching MySpace and YouTube will be far faster). So for me the sequence for new artists normally is: (1.) Hear it on the radio (example - no association). (2.) Google it and find a MySpace page. (3.) If they haven't released a record yet, capture the songs and check back regularly for a release. (4.) Order the record, i prefer physical ones but i take digital as well.

Other acts you might like
Listening to the start of Lotwotl (and now downloading in a separate tab), I wonder if you've heard of Surrent / Banco de Gaia / Tomas Dvorak (damn
/. for not allowing proper Unicode...) / Tortoise / Aerial M / Hobby (full disclosure -- Hobby is my brother) / etc...Thanks to your link, I'm poking around the LastFM site, and am happily surprised to find almost all these groups listed.
In quite a different direction musically, there's the harder-to-find Swedish group Nordic. I've usually heard the term "power trio" used to refer to a bass and two guitars, or a bass, guitar, and drums; these guys have a nyckelharpa, cello, and mandolin.
Anyway, have fun!
Cheers,

Re:What a coincidence
I think that it is enough work that it is worth paying someone (like a record company) to do it for you. Other things involved include doing the accounts, keeping and maintaining industry contacts, all the way down to buying paper and other stationary. The record companies are perfectly capable of using these same internet resources too. (And often do without letting people know who is behind it!)
I agree! The guy that lives on the first floor of our apartment complex is a very successful local musician...he makes a lot of his living off his music, even though he hasn't gone big-time yet (he will though...his stuff is too good to be ignored for much longer. Not my kind of music, but it's really well done, especially considering what he has to work with from an equipment perspective.) His room mate basically takes care of the business stuff, so he is free to do the music thing.
I liked your music, even though ambient/electronic kind of stuff is not normally to my taste. There is movement and arrangement to it that stopped the more soundscapey stuff from becoming just wallpaper.
Thank you
:-) That really does mean a lot to me. I do it just as a hobby, but having people enjoy it is one hell of a bonus! Why do you want more people to discover it?
Mainly because I want people to listen to music differently. There are always at least 6-8 layers in all of my songs, and I want people to begin listening to music as individual sounds melded together to create a single experience, rather than just a "song".
If you had the time, money and inspiration, do you think you could create songs that would effectively communicate your joy and understanding about this kind of music?
Inspiration is everywhere for me...from pictures taken by the Hubble to the way it feels when you are halfway between sleeping and awake, I try to take inspiration from anything that evokes a response in me. When I layer together different responses (emotional, physical, and spiritual) from different experiences in my day to day life, out pops my music.
That being said, if more people would slow down and actually listen to music rather than just hear it, then they could pick any of my tracks and be able to feel what I feel. They're all an exploration of how multiple sounds (experiences) are completely different...yet, when put together, they create an entirely new sound (experience) that didn't exist before.
::pause:: I guess kinda like finding your soul mate, in a way. You're both still separate and unique, yet combined you create something that didn't previously exist. -
Re:No WayFor anyone as misinformed as was the previous responder about the types of conditions one can expect and should be prepared for when venturing into high latitudes, here is some very current reading of the experiences of Ron Llewellyn (yes and yuk, he's using MySpace for his blog, but the content is outstanding) in the southern ocean. Scroll down to Part 2. Several 60 kt gales, one that had *recorded* winds of 120.
I have since learned:- The wind at Cape Horn on the night I was rolled was recorded at 120 kts.

Re:cultural differences
I'd expand by adding that the real cultural difference lies in understanding, or lack thereof. The end goal is the same: good grades. But a lot of cultures around the world push memorization over understanding. Memorization may be just as hard as understanding, but after some practice in the former it's easier to keep going in that direction. Same with understanding -- after you've "cracked" and understood something that was initially tough, you get a knack for it, and have easier time attacking new things.
I believe that the initial push should be given in early childhood, even if the consequences can be seemingly less-than-desirable -- at least initially. Ever since I can remember, it was rather easy for me to understand stuff. Or, it was much easier than remembering things that couldn't be derived from some form of understanding. Memorizing a dozen lines of a poem in early elementary grades seemed to be an insurmountable obstacle -- I'd much rather open some technical book of my father's, and learn new stuff.
Sharing exam and homework solutions is like the copying part of memorization, just that for homework you skip your brain and copy straight from paper to paper. With exams, you copy from paper to brain, and then the other way. It's pretty much a mechanical process. Doesn't matter whether you know what the material is about.
Good ole Dick Feynman -- blessed be his insight into society -- has figured it out half a century ago while teaching in Brazil. The linked-to essay (O Americano, Outra Vez!) should be required reading for every educator. His conclusion was:
I knew the system was bad, but 100 percent - it was terrible!
Rote memorization is well rooted in many cultures, especially in Asia, but also in parts of Europe, and certainly in a lot of grade-level schools everywhere. It's like a big smokescreen covering a whole expensive lot of nothing. Knowledge is understanding, mere recall isn't. If you understand something, you will -- perhaps with a bit of help -- be able to apply it to new, unseen problems. When it comes to quantitative science (say physics), you should be able to re-derive things from simpler principles (again, perhaps with help).

Re:Sucks to be you
You never know what the major issues are without the benefit of hindsight. Rarely do people know how important the work they are doing is. Cops targeting individuals because they have personal vendettas against them would be a pretty good start but time will tell as they say.
A lot of people think that the police are out of control and have crossed the line into a unconstitutional military force, have you seen this? "The Largest Street Gang in America"

Re:Obvious abuse of power
Most cops are good people. My uncle is a cop, and a good guy. I'd wager 75% or more are good people, out to do their best to protect and serve. But being a police officer attracts a certain personality type, one that wants to control others. And they get together and protect each other because the rest of us are all out to get them, and they pull the good cops in because of various leverage, and just the fact that they're all on the same team. If they don't look out for each other, who will look out for them?

Re:...what do we do about it?
Your comment reminds me of an old George Carlin monologue about people worrying about damaging the Planet with pollution. In his usual irony he notes that the Earth will be fine. It's survived earthquakes, volcanoes, asteroid collisions, atomic bombs and lots of other crap.
It doesn't give a sh!t about us or what we do to it.
The point is it's so arrogant to think we can affect the earth, for good or bad, when in reality, it's life , including human life that's we're screwing with our insanity.

We can continue down this path, with the "we can't get by without oil - at least not while I'm driving my Volvo" crap, but if we don't get hold of this problem, we'll become the decomposing matter that will eventually become some later life form's fossil fuel. -
Re:Uh... contradictory?
Do you really think that shit matters? You don't know many cops, or you've never had to deal with the courts. Laws aren't there for police to follow... only for us. Didn't you know that?

Something strange is going on here....
I checked out Gray Powell's MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/graypowell) page linked from another article and it showed his name as "Gray" with last login date as 4/20/2010. Then a few minutes later I refreshed and it showed his name as simply "g" and the last login date reverted to 4/19/2010. Is MySpace freaking out over the huge torrent of traffic that must be hitting this guy's page, or is something else going on here?

Re:I Still Use It...
Ahh, replying to one troll of an AC, but here goes: See my page. For the record I have exactly 1 customization to the default template, it adds the strike-through text decoration to the musicians that I've already seen. Notice that I have a music player on my page, but it doesn't blast music at any volume until you click play. That's more customization they allow, first to include the music player and secondly to say "No, don't force my music on anyone who hasn't clicked play." I'm not bothered one bit if you don't like my profile, but don't knock it until you've seen it.

Re:Emi
I think, as you get older, the diminishing flow of music is primarily the result of one thing: your time becomes more valuable. When I was younger, I listened to lots of music. Lots of it was shit, but I sifted through it and found many gems. In college, I worked at the local radio station, and I had access to, really, insane amounts of music. I also had the habit of just up and going to shows I knew nothing about. This yielded possibly the coolest show I had ever been to, Low at the Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA. Everyone just sat around the band on the floor, chilling out. Wow.
Now... I'm a bit more conservative, and as a result, I come across a lot fewer good bands. I don't want to spend the money, and heck, I don't really have the time anymore. Amazon's recommendation system sucks in this respect (it's recommending stuff that other people like you have bought... which you probably have already bought, too), but most artists have some kind of blog or Twitter thingy now, and you can find a lot of leads there, too. For instance, I just discovered The Tower of Dudes from Mike Doughty's Twitter feed. Yeah, Czech accordion-banjo punk! -

Re:How math is taught
"My impression, through my own experience and people I have spoken to, is that maths is hard to learn because it is generally abstract."
Something I blogged about 2 years ago:
So here I am thinking obsessively deep about what exactly that "biggest idea" should be in each of math and computer sci classes. And oddly I find that all the different math/compsci classes sort of get sucked into the same single, primary big idea in my head. My concern is that it's such a big idea that it can't fit into a single class, or really into the sequence of subjects already mapped out. Or that it will be comprehensible at the level of incoming students...
For today let's say it's this: Abstraction. Getting comfortable with it. Getting proficient with it. Knowing deeply what it implies (Getting rid of details. Panning out just the key big-league concept that you need to apply.) Being able to recognize that any knowledge domain will have a bunch of different abstraction levels, and being able to pick the right one you want to be working at. And being comfortable with forgetting everything else as long as yourk work lasts.
To summarize, I argue this: The whole point of a math class is to be abstract. If it's not abstract, then it's not math. If you didn't need to practice your abstraction skills, then you wouldn't need any math classes.

Patently false.
From TFA:
“Google’s consistent and prominent ranking of links to illegal ‘free’ downloads of [Blue Destiny’s] copyrighted recordings has devastated [Blue Destiny’s] business,” the suit reads, before pointing to specific RapidShare links that have appeared when users search Google for the Roy Powers song “Firing Line.”
It would appear, however, that Google is not linking directly to such downloads. It links to RapidShare landing pages where the download urls are listed. In other words, Google’s top “Roy Powers Firing Line” result points to a RapidShare page that serves up several links where you can download the song.
And even that is false! The Google results for “Roy Powers Firing Line” are:
Roy Powers Firing Line rapidshare file downloads
Roy Powers Firing Line megaupload file downloads
Roy Powers - Firing Line (2009) rapidshare
Roy Powers Music Firing Line Out Now!
Roy Powers on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures ...
Blues Destiny Records
Google and Microsoft sued for links to filesharing sites ...
Ronny Sessum Funk'n Blues Man Album Out
Vans Triple Crown of SurfingNone of those URLs point to a RapidShare server!
Even the ones that look like they’d have RapidShare links are merely search engines or forums where the RapidShare links are found.
This is so false that it’s laughable. Also, can anyone say Streisand effect?

Who really needs iTunes, anyway?
There are many music download and music access services available. Just go elsewhere. Like so many "firsts" on the Net - e.g. eBay, Yahoo, etc. - iTunes seems old in the tooth. Couple that with egregious DRM policies and attempts to choke interoperability. Why bother. I like Apple products, but who really needs iTunes for music. Other than as a software platform for playback, I could care less about the iTunes music store.
