Re:A question of trust
As far as I'm aware, no other spyware removal application has promoted Claria products in this fashion.
what like adaware and pestpatrol did with WhenU? ;) -

Euhm, highly anticipated?
Look elsewhere.

Re:Screenshots of build 5203
Themexp is a bad place to get visual styles from, they wrap them in a spyware installer. You can get more and better ones from here. Alternative patcher. I'm glad you didn't suggest stylexp though. Yz shadow gives similar shadow effects, but it's not perfect.

Re:pre sp1
The best solution is to slipstream and burn an SP2 CD: http://www.neowin.net/articles.php?action=more&id
= 94. Then toss/hide/ignore your original and don't ever use it again.
I don't know about others, but when I get annoyed with something like reinstalling the same updates over and over again, I go looking for a solution.
Now if only more people (esp. "geeks") did the same... -
Right...
And I'm going to sue Bill Gates b/c of these. They've been haunting my dreams for a while now!

Re:Compatibility?
From the Neowin article:
Current DivX® Certified devices will playback DivX 6 files, but will not offer full support for the advanced media features of the DivX Media Format. Devices that offer full support for the DivX Media Format are expected to reach retail shelves in late 2005.
Presumably that means DivX playing software as well as hardware.

Yup. -
Re:Creative journalism
Exactly! And for the people who are too stupid to do even that, you can get "autostreamer" from Neowin. It does all the "hard" work for stupid people who can't figure out how to slipstream...

Microsoft welcoming bloggers...... but you may NOT post screenshots of Longhorn builds in your blogs!
... and you may NOT download and talk about the most recent Longhorn pre-beta build!
... and Longhorn's feature set is still mostly undisclosed, with major stuff earlier revealed to be backported into XP + 2003.
... and of course not just anyone can easily be allowed to get any insight in the actual development to be able to comment on that. Jeez, what were you thinking!
So, what are Microsoft thinking bloggers should write about?

Re:Who's copying whom
Search: Microsoft has been working on "WinFS" for quite a while now. They just can't seem to finish it.
Scripting: Automator and Monad are entirely different. When MS makes a nice GUI for creating simple scripts, then you can complain.
Built-in RSS support: As others have said, everyone has RSS now.
Info-Display Panel: Microsoft has had this since late 2002 as can be seen here:

Re:I've got an idea!
A patched uxtheme.dll and about 2 or 3 minutes at DeviantArt will clear that right up.
I agree, though. Luna and Royale look godawful. I'd love to see them recruit a better artist for some themes later on. Maybe they can make a cool Sci-Fi theme that looks like the one in Minority Report (just saw it this weekend, otherwise I'd think of a better movie/interface design). -
They should start with this one...
I don't know about you but this one looks kinda fishy to me.

Re:PSP an iPod replacement? HAH!
They don't HAVE to be expensive... YOu can get even better Memory Stick Duos from people like Sandisk, like this guy (http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=

Re:I sure as heck would LIKE 4-bit icons...
Boy, if you don't like the way XP icons look, you're gonna really hate the way Linux icons look now.
The Fisher-Price syndrome of the windows can be overcome. It's mostly the fault of the Luna theme that XP locks you into. Do a Google search for a modified uxtheme.dll and instructions on how to replace the original with it. With that in place, you can get custom themes. The one I'm currently using is Metallic Shades.
This doesn't help you at all for changing the icons unfortunately, but the theme doesn't suggest any sort of wacko icons, and the default ones look quite nice in it. -

Re:Linspire 5
Linspire 5 seems awesome
Linspire is some Linux-like operating system, right? I googled around and found what appear to be screen shots.
They're profoundly ugly.
What about this seems awesome to you? What wonderful thing am I missing by only looking at the screen shots? -

Re:NAV
OK, http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php
/ t261120.html has a few working URLs for GIANT's Antispyware program (such as ftp://ftp.zcu.cz/pub/win/winsite/winxp/sysutil/GIA NTAntiSpyware.exe).
Using this (and, if it works, the crack), you can try the original version, before it was infected^wtouched by MS.

Re:wow... good job at nothing
How is this post even on the Slashdot home page? We already knew that this was going to happen because we already heard of the acquisition. Even worse it's just a bad post.
Here is the Slashdot article:
"Broadband Reports mentions Neowin's sneak peek of Microsoft's upcoming anti-spyware software recently acquired community favorite Giant spyware; Microsoft has code-named their re-hashed version of that software 'Atlanta.' It is currently in an internal beta test. There are screenshots of the application in action."
Which is a bad re-write of the Broadband Reports article:
Neowin has a sneak peek of Microsoft's upcoming anti-spyware software that's currently in an internal beta test in Redmond. The site also has some screenshots of the application in action. Microsoft recently acquired community favorite Giant spyware, and has code-named their re-hashed version of that software "Atlanta".
Worse the real story (sic) at Neowin is not that great and loaded with ads. Even when you RTFA you get screwed on this one. But then again I'm in a fowl mood. -
SpyNet...
Anyone notice in this pic how it mentions SpyNet?
Sounds a little too much like SkyNet to me :) -

Re:How do you patch a system?
Try AutoStreamer(site is down atm, but just google for download locations), it allows you to update your windows XP CD to have SP2 in the installation. The program is an extension of AutoPatcher which will fully update a system (and should be what you download and burn to a cd instead of trying to find everything on windows update) DL/Torrents for autopatcher

Won't work
If you have your XP license key (should be on the side of your desktop or bottom of your laptop), then just burn a copy of someone else's Home or Pro CD (depending on which version the key is for). It's legal, because you have a license.
OEM keys are different from Retail keys.

Re:History
WordPerfect History::
November 2004
1980s WordPerfect is the leading word processor software when most PCs ran character-based operating systems such as MS-DOS and DR DOS.
1985 Microsoft introduced early versions of Windows® with a graphical user interface (GUI).
WordPerfect for several reasons decided not to write a version of its product for Windows, and deliberately delaying writing software for Windows as way of trying to hurt Microsoft.
"We didn't write for Windows" because" we were rooting for anybody but Microsoft to win." WordPerfect co-founder W.E. "Pete" Pederson, March 2002 deposition
WordPerfect believed that "the impending GUI revolution would take some time to catch on." WordPerfect co-founder W.E. "Pete" Pederson, Almost Perfect, 1994
"Just when we were winning decisively in the DOS word processing market, the word processing world wanted Windows." WordPerfect co-founder W.E. "Pete" Pederson, Almost Perfect, 1994
November 1991 WordPerfect released its first Windows word processor, 18 months after Microsoft released Windows 3.0 and never fully recovered from this late start.
March 21, 1994 Novell announces that it's buying WordPerfect
March 22, 1994 Novell's stock declined by more than 15 percent.
In conjunction with the WordPerfect purchase, Novell also purchased the Quattro Pro spreadsheet application from Borland and planned to continue WordPerfect's and Borland's established practice of marketing the products together. (Consumers by this time were seeking product "suites.") This package, consisting of products from two companies, lacked key features offered by competing suites from Microsoft and Lotus and never gained a following with consumers.
1994-1996 Novell failed to successfully merge WordPerfect and Novell, failed to create a competitive application suite from the separate applications it acquired, and failed to recognize the importance of investing in sales and support teams in this market. Many former WordPerfect executives and employees left the company.
March 1996 Novell announces it's selling WordPerfect and Quattro Pro to Corel for approximately one-eighth of what Novell paid for it only 20 months earlier.
Previous press reports state that WordPerfect and Quattro Pro are for sale, and discusses management failures, including the inability to merge the two companies' cultures and failure to develop a WordPerfect sales force. One newspaper notes that sale includes "none" of WordPerfect's senior executives and only about 1/3 of its employees.
November 1996 Novell "did not understand the desktop applications business." International Data Corp., "PC Office Suite, Word Processor and Spreadsheet Markets Review and Forecast," 1995-2000 -
Price, format, and no DRM!My first consideration is always going to be price. The cost of manufacturing a song is down to almost zero. There are infrastructure costs of less than ten cents. Now, consider that the
.99 iTunes and others charge represent a doubling in the royalties that the R.IA.A. wants and you can see that it is very possible to sell music for around fifty-cents per song and still be profitable. They would have to accept lower royalties than do do now. However, I think the increase in revenue would more than make up for the per-song reduction in absolute royalties. More info here: Neowin.netI would like to be able to sample a song for at least a minute though being able to stream the whole song would be nice. Thirty seconds is not long enough, a minute would do.
ALLOFMP3 occasionally tosses out an oldie album for free. That is a nice marketing touch. This wouldn't be necessary but I would probably check back more often to see what promotions were ongoing.
I like my downloads to be unencumbered mp3. No DRM. If I am only paying fifty-cents per song I don't have a lot of incentive to cheat. It sounds like a lot to ask by DRM is a scourge. An ideal music source would also have all of the major labels and quite a bit of the balance. Not asking for much, am I?
