I know who I want to teleport to
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Please show your support for Ceren in this poll of Geek Babes!
Is it any wonder people think Linux users are a bunch of flaming homosexuals when its fronted by obviously gay losers like these?! BSD has a mascot who leaves us in no doubt that this is the OS for real men! If Linux had more hot chicks and gorgeous babes then maybe it would be able to compete with BSD! Hell this girl should be a model!
Linux is a joke as long as it continues to lack sexy girls like her! I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx. Don't you wish the guy in this pic was you? Are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?! Wouldn't this just make your Christmas?! Yes doctor, this uber babe definitely gets my pulse racing! Oh how I envy the lucky girl in this shot! Linux has nothing that can possibly compete. Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat! Wouldn't this be more liklely to influence your choice of OS?
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty!
Don't be a fag! Join the campaign for more cute open source babes today!

Re:hmm
he press release says nothing about why this particular logo
But puke liberal political correctness is the reason that the old logo was tossed.
http://mail-index.netbsd.org/netbsd-advocacy/2004/ 01/14/0001.html
"Has negative cultural, and religious ramifications."
Although, for the life of me, I can't figure out what "religious ramification" the USMC War Memorial has.
And, of course, the "negative cultural ramifications" is "defeat of really nasty aggressor regeime". Just ask the Chinese, Koreans, Philippines, Viet Namese, etc. -
the old one
The old one really, truly, was a proper representation of terminal decay.
-
Re:Hmmm
Well, I know I'd never wear a shirt with the old logo on it, that's for sure. For those wondering what the old logo was, it's this thing. It had a few problems.
1) The ambiguously gay devils - no, scratch that, the flaming homosexual devils writhing naked to raise a 'flagpole'. Whoever drew this thing spent an awful lot of time drawing the fine muscles and bulging abs of those very 'horny' devils. They also all appear to be in various stages of sexual climax, and some of their 'tails' appear to be going from one's butt to another's crotch, as if it's something else...
2) As others have noted, the BSD daemons are mimicking the famous 'Iwo Jima' picture of the Marines raising the flag. Putting devils in the place of the Marines could be seen as disrespectful to veterans by some, while others might see it as glorifying war.
3) They appear to be stomping on and destroying a whole bunch of computers. Parts are littered about as if discarded, and some of the screens look like they were smashed because of the shading.
So in short, the old logo gave the impression that this 'NetBSD' thing was a militantly demonic anti-American homosexual cult dedicated to destroying computers.
It's a shame they changed it, it fit them perfectly. -

Re:It works...?
Then you must enter an intense period of training to hone your installation skills. Go out now and get a copy of NetBSD and begin. After you can install that, you can return to Linux in triumph, for you will be able to install anything.
Actually, although it's text mode and scares some people, the NetBSD installer is actually nice and straightforward because of its simplicity. Of course, afterwards you will need to do some configuring that other free Unices do with a GUI interface, but that's what NetBSD's excellent documentation is for. -
BSD is of course completely secure, and has girls

Re:My ResignationUgh...you seem to be clueless (surprise, surprise).
:)
The AC who replied to your first troll post wasn't me. I just replied to one particularly clueless statement of yours.Didn't you notice the different style?
...Do you think *I* do abase myself to discuss serious things with *you*, our "BSD's dead" Troll? :-DNetBSD Internet2 Land Speed World Record (the 1st - May 2004)
NetBSD Internet2 Land Speed World Record (the 2nd - Sep 2004)
Yes, the researchers tried with Linux as well (they say it the comments to the 1st story)... the *BSD's IP stack was simply superior. :-) -
Re:As I remember...
There's a whole NetBSD port to that motherboard and apparently a near relative Intel makes:

I want my ports NOW!!!
This puppy is actually (IMHO) a good deal for its money. I particularly liked the fact that it is quiet, which is a fact that has become very important in these days. If I am not wrong it will be able to run 3 operating systems (windows, linux, solaris) so there is a lot of choice without even counting FreeBSD. Speaking of which, I would like to make a plead to the Sun guys:
PLEASE give us a port collection similar to FreeBSD's on Solaris.
While compiling things still has meaning in a lot of situations where precompiled packages just don't fit, doing it on manual nowadays is a pain in the butt because of the complex interdependencies between various open source packages.
If you don't want to take my word for it,the NetBSD ports collection can be installed on solaris as well, so Sun would only have to assist in this effort without trying to reinvent the world from square one.
Am I getting through - or am I asking too much?
-
Re:OK, here we go again, Linux for PPC
I'd suggest either NetBSD or Aurora Linux (the latter's latest release being based on FC2 it's pretty current).
-
Re:And Linus sayeth "I think Hurd is dead."Clearly the Hurd has gone the way of Gentoo and BSD; down the path to oblivion.
BSD down the path to oblivion? If by oblivion you mean being more and more used, and getting better and better, then you're definitely right.
:-) -
The only thing collapsing is the FUD. :-)Instead of reading benchmarks which are more than *3 years old* (he said "recent"..
:-D ) I'd suggest reading this /. story about the record established by NetBSD in May 2004. It could be instructive the fact that the researchers stated they choose NetBSD because of the superior IP stack. In the comments to the story, they also say they tested other OS's as well, and while FreeBSD performance was comparable to NetBSD, Linux performed pretty poorly. The record was subsequently broken, but it was established again by NetBSD in September:
NetBSD again sets Internet2 Land Speed World Record (30 Sep 2004)Goodbye, Troll. Have a nice day.

Re:Why the stories?
Guess what? There are tons of people who run modern software on what you term 'old piece of shit' computers. Let's get over the bullshit 'my daddy bought me a P4 for graduation' snobbery. There are entire OSS projects dedicated to running modern software on older hardware.
It's cool and a fun pursuit. I just spent a bundle on an old 8080 based system and am about to start restoring it. Sorry. It's more interesting to me than case modding something I bought off the shelf.

Cheap FreeBSD propaganda
FreeBSD is worth advocating, but I bet the avergage BSD connoisseur can come up with better arguments. The article is full of stereotypes and garbage. I really wonder if the author really took an hour to visit the WEBSITES, let alone experimenting with the systems by himself:
The new FreeBSD 5 branch offers some exciting technology, generally regarded as comparable with or superior to what is offered in Linux...while plans for FreeBSD 4.12 are on the backburner should FreeBSD 5 not achieve -STABLE status by the fourth quarter of 2005.
What a fair comparison, let's benchmark STABLE technology available in Linux by the end of 2004 with technology that might be stable in FreeBSD by the end of 2005!
[NetBSD] it's currently at version 2.6.1, with aggressive testing on the new NetBSD 2.0 promising fruition by the first half of 2005...Those familiar with NetBSD swear by it, though its use in serious environments is limited.
OK, first of all, NetBSD is at version 1.6.2, not 2.6.1, and if you are looking for "serious environments", what if I tell you that the world's fastest computer is running NetBSD? Maybe NASA's Lewis Research Center, NEC Europe and Sony Japan do not count as "serious environments". http://www.netbsd.org/gallery/research.html.
Forking from NetBSD in 1995 after a very heated -- and embarrassing -- personal argument, OpenBSD's one and only focus is to offer security. Every line of code is hand-audited and, as the site claims, there hasn't been a hole in the default install in over seven years. Striking a balance in hardware support somewhere between FreeBSD and NetBSD, OpenBSD runs on very few platforms and even then only in single-processor mode.
I don't know who got embarrassed w/ that argument, but certainly not Theo since he keeps a record of it in his own personal website for visitors to see:http://zeus.theos.com/deraadt/coremail.html. There hasn't been a hole in the default install in over EIGHT years, not seven.
OpenBSD runs on very few platforms and even then only in single-processor mode
OpenBSD runs in more platforms than FreeBSD!!! http://www.openbsd.org/plat.html
OpenBSD isn't acceptable as a desktop system or 3D workstation, however...One factor that mars OpenBSD's fair weather is its primary developer, Theo de Raadt...developers may wish to remain wary of this platform and its creator.
What a bunch of nonsense! I've been using OpenBSD in my desktop for years, and had developers listened to you, OpenSSH wouldn't exist, nor have over 88 percent of the SSH server market!http://www.openssh.com/press.html
I could go on and on, but I got tired already. I wonder why you guys promote these articles. -

Only intel?
Very good article. It is great that we are not living in Middle Ages any more and someone who uses Debian GNU/Linux can choose an architecture between IA-32, Motorola 68k, Sun SPARC, Alpha, Motorola/IBM PowerPC, ARM, MIPS, HP PA-RISC, IA-64 and S/390, and in fact much more when using a BSD kernel instead of Linux, so I would expect from such a comprehensible review that it would include more than only one architecture, basically comparing apples to apples. Are they planning to add more architectures to their comparison? I really hope so because other than that it is a great review. By the way, do you know what CPU architecture I am really looking forward to? MMIX. I hope one day I will able to buy one.

Re:Caution: OS Wars Ahead
well, NetBSD 2.0 will:
- suspend (not hibernate) - you said suspend though, do you really know what it means?
- hotplug (what the hell is that? I can plug in my thumbnail drive on NetBSD after it has booted and mount it, is that the same thing?)
- ACPI: check (in 2.0)
- 'lots of devices': I have lots of devices, see GENERIC.

Re:OS X on PC's???

Re:So?
Simple. NetBSD has infinitely higher quality and cleanliness. While it is reputed that Linux is now "more portable", not all of the ports are in the main source tree, not all are actively maintained and support all the features (let alone a userland, which NetBSD has for every arch). NetBSD's ports are, with few exceptions where things are just impractical on a device (e.g. Playstation 2 wouldn't really go far), all equally functional and stable, and all are in the main source tree, without needing to apply hacks and do unheardof installation procedures.
NetBSD's stability and cleanliness even put it ahead of FreeBSD, and leave Linux in the dust. Performance that stems from this same cleanliness and the developers' understanding of hardware and good software is pretty hardcore, especially in 2.0. SMP is supported but I haven't heard much about it.
Seriously, try it, you'd be amazed. NetBSD is not just for portability, that happens to be its edge against other BSDs (with OpenBSD close behind, for obvious historical reasons). It is the leader of cleanliness and code perfectionism, and hardware support is right up there (especially the way it handles USB devices is much better than FreeBSD and on par with Linux, albeit with less devices).
I got trolled, I have lost, I'm having a nice day, but at least I got that out there.
Fear this: http://netbsd.org/gallery/in-Action/ - and those were much older releases. -
Bagged and tagged will be linux IP stack. :-D
NetBSD again sets Internet2 Land Speed World Record (30 Sep)Heh... the harsh truth of software development (and many other sci/tech fields as well): quality and quantity often don't walk hand in hand.

Re:Totally off-topic, but need Linux advice....
Sir, you are absolutely out of line. BSD is a thriving operating system. Have you never heard of FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and NetBSD? These operating systems are maintained by at least 7 different people. Why even here on Slashdot you'll see there is a seperate section dedicate entirely to BSD. This forum and these operating systems are used by at least 107 people.
Not only is BSD the world's most secure and open operating system in the world, it is extremely easy to use. Before I started using BSD I was using Linux for about 6 years, and Solaris and HP-UX before that. Once I switched to BSD, unencumbered by GUI interfaces, web servers, TCP/IP, and all the other "inventions" so frequently touted as progess I was able to easily produce text files in almost six weeks. I had to port vim from the source, edit it for my Amiga OS, and strip out most of the featurs so it would run in the free memory I have, but man it was awesome. I felt so free. Security and portability are integrated into BSD. You can configure a firewall, router, security, and a VpN in less than 3 days using the very friendly command line interfaces, man files, and well... you don't need any gui help interfaces. It even has lynx.
Anyways. BSD is definitely not dead. Me and 106 other people prove you wrong. If you're looking for a dead or dying OS try these on for size: option #1 and option #2.
Oh yeah, one of the best thing about BSD is that it's not encumbered by the viral GNU license or misappropriated intellectual property. Ditch Linux, ditch Windows, ditch VMS, get yourself BSD. -
I2 Land Speed Record: NetBSD did it again. :-)From NetBSD's website
:NetBSD does it again. After the original Internet2 Land Speed Record set in 2004 May 3 was broken, NetBSD shines again: researchers at the Swedish University Network (SUNET) have broken once more the Internet2 Land Speed Record, using the upcoming version, NetBSD 2.0.
The new records are 124.935 Pbmps in a single stream (was 69.073 Pbmps), and 122.367 Pbmps in multiple streams. NetBSD was used once more due to the "scalability of its TCP code".
More information about this record including the NetBSD configuration can be found here for single stream and here for multiple streams. And here is the website of the Internet2 Land Speed Record (I2-LSR) competition.

Re:multi-platform
From http://www.kernel.org/:
"These days it also runs on (at least) the Compaq Alpha AXP, Sun SPARC and UltraSPARC, Motorola 68000, PowerPC, PowerPC64, ARM, Hitachi SuperH, IBM S/390, MIPS, HP PA-RISC, Intel IA-64, DEC VAX, AMD x86-64 and CRIS architectures."
Check, check, check, check, check, dunno, check, in progress, in progress, check, check, nope (who needs Itanium? :-P), check, check, never heard of it.
From http://www.netbsd.org/Releases/formal-1.6/NetBSD-1 .6.2.html:
"The NetBSD operating system is a full-featured, open source, UNIX-like operating system descended from the Berkeley Networking Release 2 (Net/2), 4.4BSD-Lite, and 4.4BSD-Lite2. NetBSD runs on 52 different system architectures featuring 17 machine architectures across 11 distinct CPU families, and is being ported to more. The NetBSD 1.6.2 release contains complete binary releases for 40 different machine types."
There are certainly some that Linux supports that NetBSD doesn't, but not many. And as far as sheer number, NetBSD wins hands down.
Besides. At a certain point, you get past the serious marker, because you've exhausted all the common platforms. At that point, only one thing matters: Can I run *Nix on my Atari? -

You mean like this?
Basically, the NetBSD pkgsrc collection (their ports-equivalent) has been ported to a number of OSes, including Solaris. -
Re:Real life
you're a newbie? turn off the PC and install NetBSD if you want to learn a real Unix.
Gentoo is a weenie toy. use it if you want people on IRC to think you're cool. use NetBSD if you want a clean, tight, secure, stable and beautiful system. -
Re:uhh..Is this book mainly code, or is it mainly theory? I'd like to get a book that explains the guts, but I really don't want to spend days looking at page after page of code on paper.
A book has to cater to so many interests, and one that attempts to descrie a kernel has a really difficult task.
A very important part of a kernel is the device drivers. As it happens, I found on the NetBSD a guide to write device drivers for NetBSD. The goal of the article is to implement a device driver for NetBSD while giving an introduction to several relevant parts of the kernel.
