Microsofts secret.

Microsoft dosent want you to know this

Excellent
For all my mission critical systems I always deploy RedHat Linux, coupled with the excellent EXT2 filesystem and MySQL.

Re:This must be pointed away from Santa's workshop
Actually, Santa's workshop (actually located in Korvatunturi, Finland) was linuxized a long time ago.
Don't believe me? See for yourself. "The site www.korvatunturi.fi is running Apache/1.3.12 (Unix) (Red Hat/Linux) PHP/3.0.12 mod_perl/1.21 on Linux." (no doubt they chose Red Hat...)
And they're actively cheating Microsoft. You know, many kids wish for computers these days - and Santa made the mistake of making an OS deal with MS.
Of course, it's easy for them to put in Linux if the kids want it - if MS asks anything, they ask the parents to tell MS death squads that they bought the computer in parts, put it togheter and installed Linux - and conclude this proof by questioning Santa's very existence.

Re:Hmm, if the web site is the way...
Have they lost the plot, or just outsourced to mindless idiots
Well, their website does run Microsoft-IIS, so what do you expect? -
Re:Linux is dying
As long as it is not MS, I will gladly accept either BSD or Linux. =)

Code Red did cripple the internet.Take a look at the statistics At one point over half IIS based e-commerce websites had a confirmed backdoor. Months after Code Red hit, 10% of the the e-commerce sites still had a backdoor.
How can anyone look at numbers like that and say it's not a problem? I find the numbers absolutely shocking...
Basically if I buy something from a website, I want to make sure it does not run on IIS. In that sense Code Red crippled many sites for me because I am not able to use them anymore.

The page is hosted on a linux machine!Netcraft, What's that server running?
Wasn't "Open Source" just another name for communism?
-
His Site Runs Communist Linuxlook here -- he's running Linux:
The site members.truepath.com is running Apache/1.3.22 (Unix) mod_perl/1.26 PHP/4.0.6 on Linux.
-
Well at least they are running Linux
Well at least he's being hosted on a Commie linux server, and not a Satanic and Commie BSD one.
I don't think I have the heart to tell him. -
Re:Prices please?
The Crusoe upgrade costs another $500. The OS is extra ($250 for RedHat or Debian)
According to Netcraft 90% of Linux users use Linux because it's free.
At $250 for this copy of of linux I wonder of those 90% will go back to using a real OS like Win2k.
-
Guess what "truepath.com" is running!Heh. I just checked over at Netcraft and it seems that the servers are running Linux with Apache and mod_perl.
As we all know, Linux makes extensive use of daemons for running background processes, something the True Path "gentleman" was critical of OSX and BSD for. And, these daemons will fork off and reproduce in a rather Darwinesque way.
Shouldn't we let this person know that his Christian site is infested by foul, evolutionary daemons?

Re:A major problem
It's a standard way of thinking for government agencies. They will never adopt open source...
It all starts at the top. I see it happening. -
Re:The correct way to do it is..Linux: the hype is over
According to the latest Gartner group research report, the Linux hype is finally over. Research shows that market share of Linux-driven production servers on the internet has finally declined to a single-digit number. The reasons for this are clear:
* Linux is unstable
* Linux has an unreliable filesystem
* Everybody uses Windows or BSD, nowadays
Research has clearly pointed out, that although there are still hordes of penguin-dressed geeks running around MIS departments, management has grown wise (or gone out of business) and doesn't even allow Linux workstations anymore, since the costs in maintaining these machines turned out to be astronomically high. The reasons for this are clear as well.
* Installation is a pain in the ass
- it usually takes a whole support team to install a geeks' workstation
* Bandwidth
- Installation and maintenance requires 4-5 times the bandwidth a 'normal' OS would require
* Integration and connectivity
- Linux was deliberately made completely incompatible and inoperatible with turnkey solutions like MS Exchange or MS SQL server. Investments in these products are therefore voided the minute you start rolling out Linux.
* Complexity
- Applications developed in Perl or C, the languages of the linux community have proven to be slow,
- unreliable, insecure and headaching complicated. Once developed and debugged, nobody is able to understand the code.
Therefore, it has been statistically proven that most companies have already moved away from Linux. This can be concluded from the following signs:
- All the 'geeks' wearing tux t-shirts are actually MIS support guys who are still studying for their MCSE exam.
- 'The screaming fast Linux machines at work' are actually refurbished workstations at a separated network segment, not allowed on the production network since every Linux (l)user seems to need nmap [insecure.org] to perform normal work-related computer operations.
- All the 'cool' Apache web servers are actually IIS machines with forged host headers. (yes, you can do that in IIS without recompiling anything. Heck, I lived for years without a C compiler and still do. )
- For the rare instance where a free UNIX is actually used in a production environment, management has smartened up and BSD is usually installed.
-
But his webpages runs on Unix.

Re:Found this funny..
There are running Win 2K.
See Netcraft.
In fact, they switched from Apache to IIS.

look who really needs the clue.
And i'm an anonymous coward! -
Apache lovin'
Kinda weird that this website gave such a stunning review of Apache. Especially given that they switched their webserver from apache to IIS. Hrm.
-
Netcraft?
I would have loved to see what Netcraft would report, unfortunately it can't find the server.

Re:I call shanagans! And if you try it with the correct hostname (TFE.c64.org), here's what you get:
The site tfe.c64.org is running uIP/pre-0.7 (http://dunkels.com/adam/uip/) on unknown.
-
IncentiveMake the start smoother, give an incentive!
For example compare Win2K vs. Linux according to the following criterias:
Compare costs of a standard corporate LAN installation
Compare total number of servers using *nix, average server uptime etc.(get this info from www.netcraft.com)
Compare number of website break-ins (get this info from www.attrition.org)
Good luck! -
Re:Mess them up.
According to Netcraft, www.fast.org.uk runs Microsoft Windows 2000, which is vulnerable to initial sequence number guessing.

Re:*BSD is dying
Even if it is dying I couldn't care less, because it is unthreatened in quality; I don't care about hype or coolness, I want high quality products that are fast and DO_NOT_CRASH(TM).

I think that this link which says that google runs on Linux is much more informative than any reference to googel.com.

Re:Support?
Google runs on win2k, so in a way, Microsoft is helping you irregardless.

I, too think this is scaryI read your privacy policy, but some questions remained unanswered:
-Who owns the information?
-Are there any cases where a user must agree to release info?-How do you make money / pay for site+bandwidth? I saw no advertising (this may be the scariest part)
-"The site www.onumber.net is running Microsoft-IIS/5.0 on Windows 2000." (uptime.Netcraft.com). ooooh. baaad. Sorry... Must... resist... hating... Microsoft...
-but seriously, how protected are you? What firewalls/encryption do you use?
-I didn't go to the main account thing, but do you use SSL? -
EnterTheGame sucks.
As a former EnterTheGame user, I have to say: hanging out there is bad for your mental health.
The network is run by some hopelessly incompetent people; they run several ircds on the same machine because they either want to look larger than they are, or have no idea how to support larger client loads with a single ircd. Rumor has it their services are written in Visual Basic - this seems quite plausible, since the machine they run on appears to be an NT4 box, as does linux.enterthegame.com. Ironic.
Recently, www.enterthegame.com was pointed at 127.0.0.1 for little more than a week. Their server list is hopelessly out of date, and uses some rather creative geography - according to EnterTheGame, Singapore is actually Sweden. There are server aliases that supposedly connect users to European, Asian, and African servers - these actually appear to point to servers in America and New Zealand.
Their service is awful; users are sometimes forced to wait for hours for someone to register channels. EnterTheGame's largest channels happen to be dedicated to anime fansubbing - hardly on-topic for what is supposedly a gaming network. For a network that seems to enjoy claiming title to the best gaming chat network in North America, they certainly don't show the technical proficiency or common sense you would think they'd need.
I recommend GamesNET. Their staff are far more competent at running an IRC network, and have even developed some very nice IRC services, called srvx.
In short, EnterTheGame sucks. -

X box is dying
X box is dying
Today yet another crippiling bombshell hit the biwildered x box community. A recent servey on Netcraft showed that xbox accounted for less than 1% of all gamers! X BOX IS DYING
You do not need to be a linux guru to see that x box is dying losing market share every day!
How many Xboxes are there?
A recent survey found 50 x box users. Half that many are xbox 95 users so that means theres 25 xbox users. 5 timess of less of them uses xbbox 3.1 while Xbox XP has 5000 users. This is consisten6t with the number of Xbox geeks!
Bill gates says this is the biggest load of SHIT i made since DOS and its one of the few places that i don't have a monopoly in.
If X box were to survice it would be with illegal roms and emulators, for practical purposes X box is dead.
FACT : X BOX is dead -
Re:The telling statement
"people publicly lament that Microsoft has virtually taken the Internet over"
How, may I ask, has MicroSuck taken the Internet over??? Last time I checked:
Apache has 60 some percent of the webserver market. IIS, 35%
BEA/IBM has 90% of the app server market (check out their web page), Microsoft, has close to none.
The language of the internet is Java/XML/HTML. Not this crap called .NET, for which market share is roughly 20% which no java shops want to convert (TheServerSide, Gartner)
One of the futures in web services is SOAP, initiated by MicroSuck by the w3c, my shop uses Apache SOAP/Axis. When the SOAP statistics comes out, I could almost bet the house that the Apache/IBM/etc solutions will dominate over M$.
The Database that backends the database is Oracle. Not SQLServer (Access# ?).
I write this crummy response on Opera version 6.x, not IE 5.x.
So, tell me again, how has Microsoft "taken over the Internet?" -
Re:That sound you hear.....
Sorry to be a pain but they're actually running Netscape-Enterprise/3.6 SP3 on Solaris. Uptime looks good.
-
Re:Slashdotted????
netcraft says it's solaris 8 and apache.
Of COURSE they're not hosting the machine on a cray. That's complete overkill, even for Cray themselves. The electrical costs alone would be on par with a top-of-the-line hosting package (I imagine).

It's now hosted at Unisys.com.
Funny to see they have a couple of Linux machines
with high uptime ;-)

Re:Apache Goes Gold
Usually these sudden jumps and drops are due to some big ISP switching, taking a few zillion virtual domains with them. Apparently Apache lost 3% to IIS last month due to one of these.
-
Apache's lead slipping?
Anyone know why Apache's lead is narrowing in the server battle? According to this graph, Apache has dipped recently and Microsoft has surged.

What Slashdot is running now...
Slashdot is running Apache 1.3.20. They will probably run 1.3.24 (currently the latest 1.3.x) before moving to 2.0.
Does anyone know when a new mod_perl will be available? The current mod_perl (1.26) was released in July 2001. -
Looks like they switched servers
I got curious and decided to look on Netcraft. It looks like they were running on NT4/IIS4 until today, and then suddenly switched to Win2K/IIS5. Perhaps they decided to throw some new hardware at the problem?
-
Re:No service arm? Wha?I was hoping to run a netcraft query on gap.com and find that it was running BSD but it turns out they are actually using IIS.
aww shucks..

Re:For all you "this isn't news" people...
First...there's a grand total of 1 link to this site on the entire web...that in itself is actually a rarity...
And it's from a site owned by the same company for Digital's Tru64 UNIX...
And M$ has put themselves into this positon. They are the ones slamming the UNIX community...I see nothing on this site that says "M$ Sux".
The fact that a M$ ran site has BSD/Linux on it is not news. The fact that the site is aimed at destroying the very platform that they are using is the issue.
That having been said, it looks the main page hasn't been updated since February 05, 1999!!! I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say someone's probably domain squatting...
