These adds all carry disclaimers at the bottom that refer you to the terms of service. The TOS on every major ISp forbid servers, which is what BT is.

Really? The last time I saw an ISP ban their users from running services was a few years ago. That was NTL and they stopped doing that several years ago AFAIK.

Also, I'm not entirely sure you can claim bittorrent is a service since it uses a peer-to-peer model rather than a client/server model. Certainly from the end user perspective, I use my bittorrent client in the same way as I use my FTP client.

As much as I hate to disagree, I've been pulling easily 100gb a month (NTL) for the last year, as have many of my friends (Telewest mostly). http://www.home.ntl.com/page/broadband3 shows the 10mb NTL package which clearly states that you have unlimited downloads (http://www.home.ntl.com/page/broadbandusage). Oddly they refer to their user agreement which says nothing about fair usage.

But anyway, don't take the piss with peer to peer maxing your bandwidth all month and I doubt you'll have a problem.

(p.s. Just noticed "unlimited" also applies to the lower connection bands as well.)

Yes NTL, because running servers with 128kbps 50:1 upstream is a joy. They do offer OC-X leased lines but that's a technology that has had it's day. I don't understand why they can't just invert their provision, I don't care about downstream speed.

Of course when every one has 10Mbps down, you'll need 1Gbps to do any rich media and the transition of the internet to TV will be complete. That's the plan, that's why BT has been busy hiring people from the broadcast industry instead of keeping pace with technology.

If you want decent speed you should move anywhere but the UK, try sweden or korea where 100Mbps fiber to the home has been affordable for years.

Don't forget that most authors would earn more money spending those book writing hours working at McDonalds than they they are likely to make in royalties from a book (at least that is the rational analysis conclusion, but then who says authors are rational). Many authors want exposure and to have people read what they have to say. Also publishers are waking up to the idea that readers will spend money on a paper copy of what they have read.

I would have prefered my own book (downloadable here, 8M pdf) to be available in paper form (publisher lost their nerve half way through the copyedit process). Thankfully the web offers an alternative delivery medium.

Here in the UK the opposite is completely true - I used to have cable from NTL but I gave up in the end because they were so bad:

1. In August 2000 I phoned NTL to arrange an installation of telephone and cable TV. The wiring was already in from the previous owner of my flat but I was told that they couldn't do the installation for 6 weeks (first sign I should have given up right there). I also checked on the availability of a cable modem and was told that the current service was analogue but they were upgrading the whole network in my area to digital in November 2000 so it'd be available then. They also refused to do the installation on a weekend so I had to take half a day off work (I didn't really see this as a huge problem at the time).

2. On the arranged installation date the engineer showed up, plugged the analogue cable decoder into the existing wire (that worked ok), tested the phone line and told me he was just going down the the multiplexer to reconnect it. He never returned (second sign I shoudl have given up). I phoned up their support line, waiting in the queue for 90 minutes before being told that my phone line hadn't been connected because they needed to upgrade the multiplexer first (they had already had 6 weeks notice that they were installing the line!). They said it would be 3 months until they did the upgrade! (third sign)

3. Eventually the phone line was connected (they tried to make me take anouther day off work for that but I managed to convince them that they *would* do a weekend install), but the network upgrade to digital never happened and I eventually decided to save money by switching my Demon dialup internet connection to an NTL one since they did unmetered dialup. I was told that this wasn't available in my area.

4. Whenever you needed to phone them you would end up having to wait in the phone queue for 60 - 90 minutes and 75% of the time they would then just hang up the call (I have since been told by people who work in NTL call centres that the line-managers do that when the calls aren't being answered quickly enough, since if they don't meet their quota of answered calls they lose their bonus pay - picking up and immediately dropping a call counds as an answered call).

5. The cable TV connection would break for several hours at a time not infrequently.

6. The analogue cable TV connection broadcast everything in 4:3 ratio - if it was a 16:9 channel they chopped the sides off the picture. I have a 16:9 TV so I'm left with a choice: chop the top and bottom off to make it 16:9 again (you lose way too much of the picture), squash the picture to make it 16:9 (ugh, distortion) or live with it in 4:3 ratio and big black bars down the side of the screen.

6. Eventually in 2002 (well over a year after the promised digital upgrade) I gave up, dropped the NTL phone line and TV and switched to Sky Digital satellite TV, a BT phone line and a PlusNet DSL internet connection. BT connected the phone line within 12 hours.

7. Sky only very rarely goes out (usually due to bad weather - happens maybe once a year for a few minutes)

8. If I need to phone Sky, BT or PlusNet they pick up the phone almost immediately

9. PlusNet's service is almost flawless (I know many people who use NTL cable modems and they are always having outages). I also get a subnet of real IP addresses and am allowed to run services on my DSL connection with PlusNet's blessing (NTL won't give you a static IP and their AUP explicitly disallows you from running services on it). The DSL connection almost never goes down.

10. In 2004 (i.e. almost 4 years after the promised digital upgrade), NTL came canvassing the area to say they now had digital services. They asked me what kind of internet connection I had and I replied "DSL

Slight correction/clarification - Sky One is the channel. Sky One is carried by NTL and Sky. It's probably carried by other providers, but I don't know anyone who uses them. Sky (or, more correctly, BSkyB) is the company who A) Provides satellite TV, and B) Owns the Sky channels.

Slashdot title length made me tell a slight falshood there - a number of franchise areas can receive this. But a large majority can't get hold of it, both Telewest and NTL areas (major UK cable suppliers).

And yes, I'm in an NTL area that can't get it. And yes, I'm terribly annoyed - I used to use the subtitling quite often, even though I'm not deaf. Just wanted the volume off to listen to music, for instance, or needed to be quiet for some other reason.

NTL, please sort out the broadcasting of teletext as you claimed you weere going to do more than three years ago.

Most people can receive 5 channels via aerial, approx. 30 using a freeview digital decoder. Sky via satellite delivers more channels than I care to remember and my cable service delivers practically the same only by cable (with cable modem :) )

Here in the UK I have cable TV (digital although analogue signals come down the same line) and my cable modem runs off the same line from a slitter. I'm with NTL and I'm pretty sure Telewest (the other major UK cable provider) do the same thing. Can anyone confirm that US cable providers use seperate lines for the cable modem and the TV? Why?

Yeah I hog bandwidth, all 512Kbit for a few hours most days, but not warez, and only a little MP3/pr0n. It's almost exclusiveley (legal) ISO's, just go here and look at the list on the left. I'm not gonna do what I did a year ago; try a few distros (inc BeOS :), think "Nah, this is too much to learn, I'll never master it", and go back to limping along in Windows. And smoking pot.

Ah, oh yeah, bandwidth charges... Well, 11Gb so far this month. NTL are £11billion in debt so I'm getting what I can, while I can, before a bandwidth cap/excess charge rears it's ugly head.

Yeah, activities like this are what might cause this, but considering that £11bn works out around £3500 per customer then there must have been some serious boardroom balls-ups somewhere along the line. Anyway, I'll be done soon, I promise :-)

On the other hand, NTL have 3 different speeds available in my area:
128kbit = £14.99/month
512kbit = £24.99 (what I use, does an ISO in just under 3 hours)
1Mbit = £49.99 *drools*
It's a 12-month minimum contract, which is fair enough. One cool thing is that I can still change the speed to meet my requirements, although when it comes to ease of use, it's a fine line between getting what I want from NTL customer service and doing a goatse.

So I think it's fair to pay for the bandwidth you use as long as those that don't use it get an equivalent discount in the other direction. You can't have it both ways.

I see it working out that 128kbit makes it reasonable for people to switch from dialup services, especially if they have a dedicated phone line for it. Granted, with patience you can do an ISO, but most people on this service simply will not bother with that sorta stuff. Even if they did, the load would be spread to off-peak times so that it does not slow down peak times significantly, which would cause NTL to have to invest in a fatter backbone connection. I see these users as partly subsidising the 512Kbit/1Mb users.

The occasional ISO taster such as me will strain it at times, but not too often. AFAIK my upstream is only 256Kbit, so that rules out any serious servers, not that I'd run any myself. As for MP3's, I'm a copyright theif, not a musical charity. :P

The 1MB service is overkill for most residential users. It appeals to businesses, meaning that it will be busier during the day rather than in the evening. That definiteley helps to smooth out bandwidth usage.

The bandwidth usage of customers on a certain package will tend to be decided by what activities are practical at that speed.

Ah, yes, but there's a whole world of difference psychologically between paying the television licence fee (approx 120UKP/170USD p.a., IIRC) and a 'top up' fee to recieve extra channels (i.e., the 5 free-to-air analogue, and about 15 extra free-to-air digital terrestrial broadcasts). About 40% (according to The Economist) of the UK's population gets pay-for (digital) TV, through satellite (Sky), cable (NTL and Telewest) or terrestrial (ITV/OnDigital); the government is going to auction the analogue TV bandwidth in 2006, so is hoping everyone will move off analogue reception quickly, or it will have to pay for everyone to get a digital set-top-box or television.

Oh, and the licence fee money isn't collected by the government, but by people contracted out by the BBC (currently Consignia/the Post Office/what-ever-name-change-they've-had-this-week ).

I got basic cable Internet for £6 ($8) a month on top of my cable TV/phone bill, and I can run servers, and my DHCP-assigned address hasn't changed in the last 6 months. Mind you, that's the 64/32 kbps option, and the cable company (NTL) is rumoured to be going bankrupt at the end of the month...

They completed their initial rollout, which covered quite a number of locations, but they are still expanding. They tend to keep the availability fairly up-to-date. Unfortunately ex-Cable&Wireless areas are still waiting for cable access using the modem in their set-top-boxes.

The price is currently still £19.95 a month, which is excellent value compared to a typical £39.95 for BT's ADSL (where available). The service has also improved a lot since I was first connected in early 2000. They do seem to have a genuine interesting in expanding their systems to keep things running smoothly. There's no monthly bandwidth limit at the present, just the usual 512Kbps capping.

What's more, NTL even updated their AUP to allow hosting of private servers, on the request of some users. Good on ya NTL!

Here in Ireland we have no consumer broadband. If I want to connect to the Internet I can:

Dialup at up to 56k for $0.6 - $2 per hour + $15 per month line rental
ISDN 64k for $0.6 - $2 per hour + $35 per month line rental
ISDN 128K for $1.2 - $4 per hour + $35 per month line rental + $25 per month IP connection
Leased Line (about $10k per annum for 128k)

It's so bad the incumbent monolpoly telco launched it's Hi-Speed Internet service about 2 years ago ... ISDN (with a reduced installation charge)!! Then they annouced I-Stream (ADSL) with a launch of October 2nd 2001 ... HOWEVER they knew full well they would not actually be allowed to launch at that time, and simply announced the date (and pricing, but NO conditions and STILL no conditions) so as to ensure the service would be stopped and dragged through litigation by it's competitors and the regulators. In the meantime the jokers are raking in the cash while soiling the market for any other potential competitors (the main candidate being ntl who paid (at the time) the highest price per subscriber ever worldwide for the largest Irish cable tv network (which was semi-state at the time and had hyped it's price by talking about cable modem trials which were very small) and who are completly cash strapped having rolled out (allegedly) maybe a POTENTIAL couple of thousand nodes for cable modems (I have yet to find a single person I know who could actually avail of it).

So now we have Ireland Offline trying to act as the voice of reason our politically appointed department of Telecommunications Regulations should be, but neither have any real teeth. Just to top it all off, after NTL bought Cablelink (cableTV) the next government sale came up, Telecom Eireann which was floated to the public with guaranteed share availability to each member of the public, and everyone encouraged (banks throwing money at them) to buy at the government set price. So Eircom was launched (of course they had to rebrand it) and proceeded to lose most of the country some of their hard earned cash (but not the country's "vice prime minister" who was/is on the board who claimed at the first agm/lynching after the floatation that "he had no money to buy with" HAHAHA (insider trading cough cough) HAHA). So after a failed floatition that lost most of their customers potential loyalty (most people even had to deal with a share split as the mobile division was sold off, so they ended up with some vodafone shares) the company went through an incredilby public bidding war resulting in the purchase of the fixed line division by a private group which now has a £2billion+ loan to cover .... so they are going to launch a cheaper service for anything .... I think not ... they will unbundle the local loop now (only 1 year after the EU deadline) and risk losing some analogue call revenue ... NO

To anyone in this thread who has complained in any way about price, quality of service or availability of service I suggest you thank your lucky stars you aren't stuck with 56k (I'm actually extremely lucky that I availed of an offer a few years ago to get unlimited free off-peak net access for $25 per month from one of their competitors who no longer allow people to sign up AND who kicked of many users for over using the unlimited service!) and go search google for errorcom to see just how popular eircom are! I think GPRS will be my first "broadband" connection .... Go 2002!!!

They've always dragged their feet over any innovation that has potential to stop them screwing over customers. They kept ISDN at exhorbitant prices ($640 installation, $42/month rental plus call charges on top). Ran trial after trial of DSL even though they had it working, fearing cheap unmetered access would cut into their lucrative ISDN scam. Even now my friend using BT DSL tells me that the contention ratio is so high his old 56k used to be often faster.

I'm very happy with my NTL cable modem, which is faster (BT caps at 512kbps as does NTL but I get faster downloads and better pings in Counterstrike than my ADSL friends) at half the price.

In case those abroad know little of BT's history: it used to be a national monopoly and the entire country's telecommunication infrastructure was laid at taxpayers expense. Hence in opening the telecoms market to competition it is felt that rival companies should have the same benefits the ex-monopoly has to level the playing field*. Naturally BT are pulling every legal and obstructive trick in the book to frustrate this process.

Forgive this blatant plug, but if you are in the UK and want broadband, try NTL. 25 quid a month for 512kbps. I've had no trouble at all with them.

BT's behaviour over this issue makes me ashamed to be British. The sooner BT get a wake up call the better.

The Cable companies in the UK (ntl, Telewest, C&W) have been carrying both anologue and digital channels since 1999, I'm not sure if it's a capacity issue since the average widescreen digital channel (mpeg encoded) uses about 6Mbps in bandwidth whilst an anologue channel uses the equivalent of 27Mbps of bandwidth, the digital bandwidth is variable though. If the cable system is carrying well over 100 anologue channels then bandwidth might become tight.

This is probably an excuse for the cable companies to drop anologue services as quickly as possible because it would free up huge amounts of bandwidth.

I'm on NTL trial of ADSL and it's nice at 1Mbp/s. However, for a home user I can't see ADSL scoring over cable modem in any way. Apart from downloading ISO images of Linux distros, I never notice any difference between ADSL and cable modem when playing Counterstrike or streaming video.

NTL is *not* trialing cable modem. It rolled into service quite a while ago at £20 per month and the details are here. As NTL have over 8M homes (not people) as customers, with a franchaise of 12M, I wouldn't call them insignificant. Telewest reach "more than 1.6 million homes or approximately 4.0 million consumers".

Telewest 5.5M homes franchaise, NTL 12M homes franchaise, apply same 1.6/4 homes/consumers ratio, and you get a reach of 43.75M consumers. This is over 2/3 of the population of the UK, so I wouldn't underestimate the effect the cable companies are going to have.

A good friend of mine's got 2Mb (business) aDSL with demon installed along side a 512K cablemodem from ntl. He's had the aDSL for close to a year, and despite the NAT translated connection, was reasonably happy with it, however service degraded rapidly to the point a couple of months ago he decided to get a cable modem installed along side. He doesn't use the aDSL anymore ;-) He's a big online gamer, and values a low ping above all else. Last week the aDSL gave a ping of 75 and average download speed of 80kps, the CM a ping of 30 and download of 70. The CM costs 25gbp per month and the aDSL 100gbp per month. Guess which is getting cancelled ;-p
I gotta disagree with the apparent majority on here regarding the state of the UK broadband market though. We've got the most advanced interactive TV developments, fast roll out plans of both aDSL and cablemodems, an increasingly competitive market, world first beta trials of new Broadband services, and fantastic prospects for those working in the business. aDSL doesn't suck if you choose your provider carefully, and you can always read the contract before you agree to it, to guage your chance of getting a refund. for no or partial service.
I do worry for the inevitable proliferation of broadband in mainly metropolitan areas though, and wonder if we may be developing a less connected rural underclass.

Disclaimer: I work for ntl:, but only in one of those lowly moral support type functions ;-)

There are a number of things that hold up broadband access in the UK but the main one is Local Loop Unbundling (the last mile from the exchange to people) if owned by BT. Now OFTEL, the regulator is working to undo this but even though it should happen in the next 12 months BT are still dragging their feet by saying "there isn't enough room" in the exchanges. It isn't however all doom and gloom. There are cable companies like blueyonder and ntl trying to get cable out. Also there are a few wireless companines. But if you are like me and live in the sticks there isn't much help. For someone outside the UK you can get a good overview at broadbandhelp.com. Even though there are now quite a few ISP's offering DSL BT is still providing the bandwidth and of course it is their best intrests to take their time :(

Not for a bit yet.

I understand BT are trialling, although I don't know where and the results have apparently been mixed. They may not roll out the service at all.

No idea about other providers of DSL. Since BT are the only real copper carrier here (unless you live in Hull) it seems unlikely.

Cable modems are on their way though - our cable provider (NTL) is running a trial in Guildford now and say they will start selling it to customers in Surrey and Hampshire in July. Other regions are scheduled over the next year or so.

However, NTL require you to buy a 3Com card (150 quid) and to have a NIC (they offer a 3Com one themselves), and the subscription is 40 quid a month (includes ISP charge).

Other bad things are that they only support Windows at the moment, dynamically allocate IP addresses, and conspicuously say nothing about running servers. That may not mean anything, but... their suggested target market does not include homebrew web serving.
