Re:Where is technology going? You talked to the wrong person. A much more thorough definition can be found here.
Depending on your opinion of the Jargon File, you may find this definition much more canonical.
The true canon, of course, would be Heinlein's novel, but I wouldn't wish that on anyone

Bikers Use Linux!
According to this story, it is indeed true that a large motorcycle gang uses Linux, and is infact willing to beat people up to protect Linux developers. From the story:
"I was running from the gun nuts and the police, and was running down the middle of the street in a panic. I thought it couldn't possibly get worse. I look up and it's a freakin million bikers wearing gang colors, coming right at me. The guy asks me why I'm runnin' and I tell him that they're trying to kill us because we're into Linux. This dude, the meanest, most evil-looking dude I ever saw in my life looks at me and says 'sheeeit, Linux? I run Red Hat on my linux box" and nods to the dude next to him. Turns out that the chief enforcer for the gang had met Linus Torvalds at Sturgis way back years ago. Linus turned him on to Red Hat, and he's been writing GNU software ever since." -
First yearI studied Computer Science at the University of New South Wales. The introductory computer course in first year was "Comp 1A". Instead of C, C++ or Java, we started with a language called Haskell, a pure functional language. Everything has to be an input to a function, or an output - no local variables, no assignment, no loops. The only available form of high level flow control is recursion. After a few weeks, we could write functions to solve simple problems like: Write a function that has an integer input 'n' that returns a square character array representing the image of a square with side-length 'n'. Trivial stuff, even for beginner programmers.
Sometime in the fourth week, our lecturer announced the eagerly anticipated first Assignment. I couldn't wait, because I expected to ace it, after all, I had years of programming experience, a huge advantage over my peers. Not so: We had to write an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) program. I was stunned. I had never done anything that complex in my life, in any language, and now I was being asked to do it in a functional language! However, many people achieved recognition rates over 80%, and some people rates as high as 98%, even though most students were first-time programmers. It just goes to show what people are capable of when pushed.
The same lecturer (Andrew Taylor) later came up with a whole series of Evil assignments -- his students tell stories about them to this day. For example, our second assignment in Comp 1A was to write an AI for the card game Hearts. To mark the assignment, he wrote a system that ran submissions in randomly chosen four-player games automatically, and ranked them by total score after some number of games. Half the marks were based on the performance of your AI! He even made the ranking software available beforehand so that students could test their algorithms against each other in mini-tournaments.

Video Tape / PVR / VCD
I've been recording everything on TV for two days now. My GF taped some 90210 on accident, but I taped over that.
I would like to have quality video to put on VCD, so if anyone can point me to somewhere that I can download video, that would be great. Streaming video is nice, but I own a TV and get cable - we don't need that.
There is a mirror of some video at my public FTP site: ftp://ftp.one.net/pub/users/joe/
Anything that is pointed out to me will be uploaded to that site.
This is something that I believe shouldn't be forgotten - let's keep these records. -
My spin... not serious
9/11 is the anniversary of the discovery (by euros) of Mann. Island where the WTC buildings were.
Someone suggested in a joking way: what if it was Native Americans. WTC is a good target for someone getting back at you for trading your nations for beads.
--This isn't at all meant to be serious-or-even to make you think that it's true--
I just want people to open their minds to who could be responsible. I don't think Native Americans would do anything like this.
My money is on Bin Ladin [not the whole Arab community].
VIDEOS AT THIS SITE -
Re:mod me? MIRRORS!
The major news broadcasters have agreed to share footage - so I believe it's ok.
I'll upload any video I get to THIS SITE .
Some are from sites above - either way, check them out. I think it's important to get this on CD or other such backup.
This FTP is in cincinnati ohio - so don't expect good speeds from the west coast.
My prayers still go out to everyone. -
Two links, and random comments...Lego motorcycle
Of course, I consider the meccano one to be 7 hundred times more appealing than the lego one. But, I played much more to lego than meccano, and ended-up as a computer engineering guy (the reason I didn't liked the meccano was that you often have to fold pieces, which is an undoable operation. Same reason why I like software, you recycles the same bits ad nauseum). My slightly older brother was more appealed by the meccano stuff, and, (coincidence ?) is an electrical engineer and actually able to use a hammer drill without wounding himself.
Anyway, the meccano models have a Jules Verne look that is probably outdated now. And are fascinating, but fscking expensive.
About the crux of the article, I think that child choose their games, so that demise of meccano is more like a 'don't want to have to screw things together'. If all school were making their computer science course on C, we'll end up with programmers that actually know what memory allocation is. But the java wave will make all this obsolete, and we'll have garbage collectors in the kernel. Sure, some of us will still be ramble about how everything started to slip down when C replaced assembly, but putting a C compiler in the hand of everyone won't change much.
Something I am surprised not to see pointed in the article is that a lego model take a few dozen of minutes to be done, while a meccano one take hours. Attention span seems to get shorter and shorter, which may explain why child would prefer lego...
Cheers,
--fred

Too bad they cant use older technology.
Some pacemakers had a nuclear battery. I am not sure exactly whst types but this link talks about nuclear pacemakers being just thrown in the trash by funeral homes. Couldn't you gang up 2-3 of these and generate enough power? that way battery life is no longer an issue (well except for every 5-10 years for a fuel rod replacement !)

Re:my .02 dollars
Although I'm also fond of WebImage, it hasn't been updated in three years. After I gave these guys my money, I never heard a peep out of them until yesterday, when they spammed me.
Oh, sorry, they put me, without asking, on an "opt-in" news headline list, where they get revenue for every clickthrough. And even better, I can sign people up for it and get money for their clickthroughs! Feh. And when I contacted them, they of course told me that since I had given them my e-mail in 1997 (where the require it on every order), that they had put me on their "marketing" list. And since I was a customer, it couldn't be spam!
So beware of doing business with Group42. -
Re:Here are pictures of the ballotI am truly disgusted at the number of posters who think these voters were purely stupid! My other comment explains my view of how the ballots oculd be confusing in more than one way.
Heck, I even included a picture that shows the effect that shifted holes would have.
Don't be so quick to judge. You're making fools of yourselves!
-
The Ballot *was* confusing!
Look, the first problem is not with the pages alone. Its how the pages lined up with the holes. Check out the mock image I threw together. The black dots are where holes might have been if there was play in the ballot book. The light grey dots is where they should've been (and where the one news photo I've seen shows them).
The stories from people just don't match that perfectly aligned news photo. But if you consider that the holes could've been shifted (really, the book would've been what shifted, but for all intensive purposes...) you can see how it could be confusing. One lady said she saw a dot RIGHT NEXT to the word Democratic, not the separating line above -- that turned out to be the Buchanan hole.
But there is another problem people have cited. If you go in there thinking only of two candidates, Bush and Gore, you look only for those two. In English, we read left->right, top->bottom, left_page->right_page. You could easily say "First one is Bush, so that's teh first hole... Second one is Gore so that must be the second hole!". Why read further? Why examine the right page at all when your candidate isn't over there? Remember, your hindsight is 20/20, so don't be so quick to label these people as "stupid" or you might be so yourself!
The fact is, the ballot was redsigned on to two pages so they could use bigger fonts to make it easier to read. That was a nice idea. But, they never evaluated what the other ramifications were.
Furthermore, the sample ballots sent out to the voters, etc. were paper books! There were no holes in there, no gap, etc. It was not what the ballot actually was. No one could've guessed.

Not uncommon for Euro Countries...
France is just twanked because Echelon caught them on a little deal with Brazil not too long ago. (read it here)
If you are included in the ECHELON network, like the UK and Ireland, then everything is just peachy...else, you cry foul. What of the countries that are in the "network" that are spying on their own companies? Is this suddenly OK?

Mirrors part 1Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Temporary restraining order DENIED!
Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.
We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.
Here is the EFF's stance on this case.
Save a copy of this web page now!
We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.
Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.
Here is a 2600 story on this.
Explanation on legality of this information
The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.
Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:
NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.
Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.
Current Mirrors Last updated: Wed, Jan 19, 12:13am EST
Numbers are only for the maintainer's convenienceWe apologize for the length of time between updates. This list has gotten quite large and thus more difficult to maintain.
Much thanks to this site for listing mirrors of the mirror lists.

Mirrors part 1Note: This mirror list has been copied from http://www.humpin.org/decss/, on January 2nd 2000 13:13 GMT
Mirrors since 28-Dec-99 added by me.
To my main DVD page (containing list of lists of mirrors) Visit Humpin!
If you need a REAL reason to host these files, try reading this. Truth has never been more purely distilled.Save a copy of this web page now!
Current Mirrors Last updated: Fri, Dec 31, 8:18pm EST
Numbers are only for the maintainer's convenienceMuch thanks to this site for listing mirrors of the mirror lists.

This guy is hilariousThis guy is hilarious. He is quite serious about everything he says but is nevertheless purpously extravagant. He seemlessly (through four dimensional space) blends a dead serious eccentric passion with a superb parody of all the over the top marketing hype we've all grown so fond off. He mixes outrageously pointless claims with dead serious observations of the properties of his products such that every one of his sentences is at the same time a parody, an observation of the physical properties of this world and an earnest description of his wonderful product.
For your edification:

OOPS - Trying Humpin list againYou have one bat and there are 100 million holes Visit Humpin!
If you need a REAL reason to host these files, try reading this. Truth has never been more purely distilled.Save a copy of this web page now!

Mirrors - Now more than 70!!!!Oh yeah
Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Explanation on legality of this information:
Attention
www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files.
UPDATE: Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.
I have taken it upon myself to mirror the mirrors. So until such time as the hounds of hell come a-knocking at my door, I present for you this list:

Re:Backup onto multiple CD-RsThere's a more automatic way of doing this called backburner. It does more or less your scripts do, but is easy to use. It also has support for a variety of media, so if you wanted you could even backup your server onto all those old floppys you've got kicking about.

Old HatBack in 1997 or so I stumbled over this guy selling acreage on Mars. I've had mine ever since.

Wow. You just type that all in?
This is a riot in a more digestible format that may describe the fustration towards big evil software companies. -
Empathy, Imagination, and Dread
Many of the comments I have read, including this one, seem to be from people who lack the ability to convey any sense of empathy. Empathy is a requirement NOT of "horror," which is more concerned with shocking the sensibilities of the viewer/reader with vivid or violent detail, but of "dread," which does so by forcing us down an inevitable path that leads to a sort of "unspeakable" climax which we cannot help but allow our minds to enumerate, at once against, and by, our own will.
The root of dread in a film, short story, novel, etc. that taps the mass unconscious mind is first and foremost its ability to explore and magnify this concept. Dread cannot be appreciated if one is not willing to first empathize beyond the bounds of one's own personal experience. Furthermore, empathy is only gained by testing through extremity. Empathizing with someone on a shopping trip is considerably less substantial than empathizing with someone trapped alone in a stopped elevator with no lights.
I certainly would not be very interested in tracking down an urban myth based on half-baked recollections of a child murderer, or a colonial-era witch. I would not feel drawn to filming a hiking trip as if it were some novel approach to documenting the history of the myth. I certainly wouldn't go hiking in the first place without a number of prior arrangements (and, for pete's sake, a cell phone).
But I can *imagine* what someone who was drawn to do these things would feel like. I can imagine their energy and their enthusiasm for a project they believe in. I can imagine the mounting stress and tension as they realize they have lost control of their situation. I can definitely imagine their terror at things that go bump in the night. (Wait -- don't tell me -- you were never five years old, right?)
;)Second, dread relies on our willingness to complete a half-drawn picture with the worst possible details drawn from imagination. If one is unwilling or unable to allow one's imagination to fill in these details, then one will never be truly frightened by a dreadful story (visual or otherwise).
Edgar Allan Poe's story "The Casks of Amontillado" is a perfect example. What frightens us most is not the interment of the narrator behind the wall of brick, but rather, our imagination of the hideous nights of utter darkness, starvation, madness, and ultimate death that await him. None of these elements are described at all by Poe, but they are the most vivid image left by the story.
TBWP is thus a film not of conventional "horror" (which consists usually of a predominant amount of gore and/or special, makeup, and visual effects) but of dread. It is not fairly judged against such films as "Halloween" or "Hellraiser," but rather "Picnic at Hanging Rock" or "Angel Heart."

Re:CD-RW?
CD Backup, which is based on Backburner, are both good and rapidly developing solutions to the linux CD-R and CD-RW backup questions. Furthermore, they can be used to archive mounted partitions which addresses the original question of how to backup multiple OS's.

Re:PPC distribution--LINUX PPC 5.0
NetBSD has a PPC port. They have a thumbnail of an iMac on their page, so I assume the iMac is supported hardware.
As far as the other comments on this thread -- I have X running on my iMac, although it was a royal bitch to install. The one site which really helped with this was the iMac Linux site, already mentioned several times on slashdot. It describes how to get X (with good resolution and color depth) running, and has other tips for the platform.
A bunch of new PPC distros are in the works -- DebianPPC, iMandrake, Yellow Dog, and of course LinuxPPC v5. For the iMac user, probably any of these will be an improvement over the weird-ass iMac installation of LinuxPPC 4.x. -
James Hoffman's SQL Tutorial
Posted by DiegoGuy:
Well, the first thing I would do is thoroughly read James Hoffman's SQL tutorial at
http://w3.one.net/~jhoffman/sqltut.htm.
That should get you started quite well with SQL.
MySQL has plenty of documentation online, use it. -
How do I do that? View source!
