If he's gaining in the polls, on a longer trend, it's because a lot of conservatives (think Reagan Democrat types, not Kudlow types) are mad at Bush over his illegal alien amnesty plan and the budget deficits.

Sadly, I'm one of them... although I don't live in NH. Even more sadly, I don't have any other option for my vote. I don't approve of Bush's handling of a lot of things, chiefly his spending of money that isn't his to spend, but he'll get my vote simply because of the tax cuts and the war on terrorism. Lieberman is my next option, but he probably won't make it to November, unfortunately. Even though he's the most fiscally responsible, he's still $35 billion over Bush's spending, even if all the tax cuts were repealed. (A side note, the federal income tax returns were higher in 2002, after the tax cuts, than they were in 2001... so I don't see how repealing them would do any good anyway.)

It is always funny when democrats are subjected to their own medincine. This time you have discovered the evils of gerrymandering. Finally! Take a look at excellent article in Opinion Journal for a history lesson.

What you said is largely true, except the part about Cheney not benefiting from his involvement with Halliburton, as mentioned above in the grandparent post: "Vice President Cheney has a financial interest in Halliburton."

I don't think his stock options were an issue at all until the haters started seeing massive conspiracies in everything this administration does. All congressmen own stock, so it is easy to form conspiracy theories, especially when it fits the purpose of extremists. But before you accuse the vice president of that level of corruption, shouldn't you have something better than, well, ...nothing? Anyone who knows anything about the bureauacracy and heavy oversight involved, the idea of pushing a billion dollars with a single phone call is laughable.

You didn't mention the alcholic personalities of Bush and Cheney. The grandparent post gave links to their DUI records. Basically, Republicans are, in general, more out of touch with their feelings than Democrats. So Republicans tend not to notice alcoholic personalities:

Absense of deep or sophisticated thinking (If anyone has any information about George W. Bush showing evidence of sophisticated thinking, please write to me.)

Have you ever read anything to come out of any conservative think-tank (Cato, Heritage Foundation, Hudson...)? Liberals like to think they are so smart, that only they should be allowed to spend your tax dollars and they alone have the good of the country in mind. The truth is liberals consist largely of the under-educated (those w/o a hight school degree vote 70% democrat) and the over-educated (university professors vote 85% democrat). A strong majority people in the 'middle,' those with a high school or 4-year college degree vote Republican. So don't mistake a lot of thinking with a lot of quality thinking, especially when the only ones who agree with your conclusions are the idiots who couldn't graduate high school.

Polarized thinking (Bush's "you are either with us or against us" is an example. Another example is his statement, "Look my job isn't to try to nuance. I think moral clarity is important... this is evil versus good.")

Meanwhile, the Chicago Maroon reports the University of Chicago is facing a problem with students who aren't potty-trained. Nate Claxton, who appeared on a panel at the university's Center for Gender Studies, said that, in the Maroon's words, he "knew people who had contracted bladder infections because choosing a gender bathroom bothered them so much that they did not go to the bathroom all day." Here are some more highlights from the panel:

Members of Feminist Majority, Queers & Associates, and the Center for Gender Studies organized the panel as part of the Coalition for a Queer Safe Campus. "Going to the bathroom is a moment where definition is very important in choosing a door," said Mary Anne Case, one of the panelists.

She pointed out that many women's restrooms have a caricature of a person in a dress on it. "Going into it implies that we are willing to be associated with that image. There are only two [images] to choose from. This moment involves an act of self-labeling."

The feminists, "queers" and gender studiers want unisex bathrooms:

Ana Minyan, the moderator of the panel, said that bathrooms will be called gender-neutral, rather than co-ed, because, "this terminology is generally used to refer to two sexes while the gender-neutral tends to be associated with more diversity and fluidity within the sex-gender continuum. As our aim is to make everyone, no matter what their gender and/or sexual persona is, more comfortable, we are using the term gender-neutral."

One Roger Simon thinks it's a great idea: "I believe that if all parts of the body were treated equally, and there was not so much emphasis on genitalia, than people could move beyond gender differences and grow mentally and socially." Well, call us small-minded, but the idea of going to the bathroom and having a girl at the next urinal doesn't exactly put us at ease.

Statistician Jeff Sonas has an interesting article on chessbase.com discussing the history of man vs. machine chess. As for the defeat of Kasparov by Deep Blue, Kasparov had some interesting comments in the Wall Street Journal on that match.

In 1997, when IBM terminated the Deep Blue project, the computer-chess field was left to talented enthusiasts. In the past 5 1/2 years, new programming techniques have combined with superior chess knowledge to create a quality of machine chess that is far superior to that of Deep Blue. In game five of my match with Deep Junior it played an imaginative sacrifice of the type generally considered impossible for a computer player. It was a landmark moment for computer chess and the science and programmers behind it.

Unfortunately, because Deep Blue's records were never made public, it is quite useless to discuss the strength of Deep Blue vis-a-vis the strength of Deep Junior. IBM said Deep Blue crushed other programs, but what value are these statements without records?

If the ACLU supported the Second Amendment in the same fashion that they do abortion, then they woudl be demanding taxpayer subsidies for poor children to buy guns, without having to notify their parents, so they can shoot the child molestors who prey on them.

The Patriot Act is something over which a lot of people get worked into a frenzy, I know, but 1984 this is not. There are lots of good canned lines the ACLU and others are using to fire up their supporters, but catchiness doesn't make them true. Policy disagreements over issues like this need to be addressed with reason and respect, not insults and emotion.

One of the best articles in defense of the Patriot Act appeared in Commentary and the Wall Street Journal and was written by Robert Bork, a very conservative former judge, Reagan Supreme Court nominee, and legal scholar. I think he makes some points about which a lot of the rabid anti-Patriot Act people are unaware.

I happen to think the Patriot Act is appropriate. If you don't, that's cool. I can handle disagreement, and I urge you to vote your conscience in 2004. But let's keep the debate constructive.

Food for oil, I don't see much money in that deal. No money can't disappear.

Well, you don't walk into a grocery store with 10 gallons of unleaded and trade it for food. Oil gets sold, money buys food, food goes to Iraq... or at least that's what was supposed to happen. The UN got a nice "administation" cut off the top, but no one seems to know exactly where those billions went. And as much as people like to point the finger at Haliburton and claim they're a bunch of war profiteers its interesting how no one brings up the TotalFinaElf scandals and their involvement in some very, very shading dealings in Iraq.

* How much business did France and Germany do with Iraq in violation of UN resolutions?
None that I know of. Of course I have seen a lot of this crap on public forums or frog-bashing sites. But no report of those on any remotely reliable source, not even on Fox News (only exception is an op'ed column by William Safire in the NYT, which allegations have been denied by the US administration itself). Given the unusually aggressive stance the Bush administration has taken against those countries, I guess that any credible lead on that subject would have been leaked to the press in no time.

See the TotalElfFina articles above. Plus, the Germans and the French were trading *a lot* with the Iraqi gov't in the late 90s. It would be interesting to see just how "liberal" their interpretations of the sanctions exactly were. I think its been underreported.

* How the "sactions are killing millions of Iraqi babies" stories were bogus.
Economic sanctions are a useful tool to destabilize a regime or prevent it from endangering its neighbours but you have to admit that the population ends up paying the highest price to them. It might eventually be worth the price (South African Apartheid regime) or not (Cuba comes to mind). In the case of Irak, I guess that the food for oil program somehow prevented the most severe famines but I don't know of hard facts. Do you have them?

This assumes that if there was no oil for food program there would have been "severe famines" which also seems to be a pretty unsubstaciated claim. What looks like what happened was Saddam hyped up and played the "starving" baby angle for all it was worth. The "food" he got for his oil didn't make it to the Iraqi people. If you average $5billion a year in aid and spend $13million on healthcare, that's a lot of money unaccounted for.

* How much of the Arab and some European press were getting paid by Saddam
Come on! You're not saying that any media that voiced opinions differing from the official White House point of view were sold to Saddam, are you?

What I am saying is that there were reporters/editors in the Arab press who were getting money (commissions, bribes, call it what you want) from the Iraqi gov't to file reports that were sympathetic to Saddam. There was speculation that some European editor/reporters were pocketing cash. That, as far as I know, hasn't been proven, but the point of this entire /. article is about stuff that hasn't gotten a lot of attention. There's been no followup as far as I know.

I suppose there are some good points in it, but the fact that it's almost entirely fiction really puts me off.

I agree with some of the larger opinions Moore expresses, but the fact that he's a toss and the facts are very unreliable kills any credibility for me. The ending made me physically cringe.

Not So Foolish
We heard from numerous servicemen, ex-servicemen and relatives of servicemen who took issue with the articles we cited in our item yesterday on pay and benefits for the troops on duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. Capt. Jamie Flanders of the Air Force writes:

Neither the Pentagon nor Congress has any plans of removing the family-separation allowance or the hostile fire/imminent danger pay from all of our deployed troops.

I am currently deployed to Uzbekistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. As a captain (O-3) and a deployed member, I am entitled to the following benefits in addition to my regular pay:

* $3.50 per diem (to cover miscellaneous expenses, soap, snacks, etc). $3.50 per day for one 30-day month comes to $105. This is the least amount given to every deployed military member and may be increased based on the cost of living in the deployed area.

* Hostile fire/imminent danger pay. Currently set at $150 a month for members deployed in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Pentagon is reviewing whether or not those areas that are no longer considered dangerous deserve this specific pay. This will not affect those members deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.

* Family separation allowance. Currently set at $250 per month. This pay is given to any military member who is away from his family for at least 30 days. Congress increased the amount to $250 from $150 a month after Sept. 2001 and reviews it each fiscal year to determine whether to should drop it back to $150.

* Tax-free status. Given to every military member deployed to a combat/imminent danger zone. And this amount is not prorated. If I deploy on June 30, my pay for the entire month of June is tax free. If I go home on July 1, all of July is tax-free as well. This is given to the military member by not withholding FICA from his monthly paycheck--and that month is not considered part of total taxable income on the W-2. As a captain with 10 years of total military service, my monthly pay increased approximately by $600.

So for my deployment to Uzbekistan, I receive additional benefits totaling $1,105 a month. In the worst-case scenario, the Pentagon is considering for my area to remove hostile fire pay and reduce family separation back to $150. Based on that, my total benefits would drop to $855.

Many readers also pointed out that in addition to the $6,000 death benefit for families of servicemen killed in action, the Department of Veterans Affairs also offers low-cost Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance, which pays even if a soldier or veteran dies while not on duty.


Note the "tax free status," which is like giving money to a rich stranger.

Here's the fact about the Kyoto Treaty that is often overlooked. Kyoto did not cover much of the developing world. China (currently the 2nd largests emitter of Greenhouse gases), India and Brazil are exempted. All of these economies are projected to grow at a rapid rate. Under Kyoto, Greenhouse gas production will grown sharply in the next few decades.

It's pretty clear that Kyoto's only real effect is to boost the economies of certain countries, such as China, at the expense of the US. Since Greenhouse emissions will probably not go down at all under Kyoto, if the assumptions of those who posit Human-activity induced Global Warming are true, things will continue to get worse.

I'd say that the government and people of the US have stated again and again what our aims are. Here are some examples, if you want:

• Here's Bush's speech on the subject to the United Nations, given September 12, 2002.
• Here's the Joint Congressional Resolution which almost the entire Senate, and about 75% of the house voted for.
• Here's the statement of the nations of Spain, Portugal, Italy, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Poland, Denmark, and the Czech Republic.
• Here's the statement of the nations of Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Of course, to hear you tell it, all of these people are just in it to make some money for President Bush's father. Is that really your claim?

Perfectly clear, but only because it is taken out of context. The UN Charter also says:

"Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defense if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations."

Your turn to cite evidence that the security council approved of how the US chose to respond to 9-11.

On September 28, 2001, both the Security Council and the General Assembly approved US-drafted, US-sponsored measures approving our actions in response to the attacks of September 11. I welcome you to look these up.

Can you provide me with a shred of evidence that the presence of Syria, China or Sudan has had an adverse effect on the judgement of the human rights committee?

While I would argue that such effects are clearly evident, especially in the Human Rights Committee's statements in the matter of Israel, this is beside the point entirely. The mere presence of such notorious human rights violators on the Human Rights committee does irreparable harm to the UN's credibility.

It also states that whether or not they have followed the requirements of the convention is a matter for a tribunal to decide, and that until such a decision has been made, they are to be considered POW's and treated as such.

This is a misrepresentation of a specific provision of the Conventions, which actually calls for such tribunals only in the case where a nation has generally upheld their obligations under the conventions, but where an individual soldier caught fighting in civilian garb claims that he had legitimate reasons to do so.

Afghanistan is free? When did this happen?

Around when it was liberated by US and Northern Alliance troops, basically. Is there more progress to be made? Sure. Is it miles beyond where it was under the Taliban? Clearly.

Food aid is STILL at the present time lower than it was prior to the US attack.

This is simply incorrect. Indeed, in actual fact, even during the air war more aid was reaching Afghanistan than had under the Taliban. Once Kabul fell and the roads from the north were open, aid shipments skyrocketed again. See here for an analysis of claims that food aid is not getting through.

Finally, on the issue of US Foreign policy, I repeat that I do not see a legitimate claim against America by those who you claim `have ample reasons to be angry'. If you do see such a legitimate claim, perhaps you should spell it out.

For those who think that only right-wing Christian anti-abortionists engage in such hate-mongering, you should read the following blogs by Andrew Sullivan, from the week of November 25, 2001, about an extreme gay group that had a web site similar to "The Nuremberg Files":

They add a disingenuous disclaimer disavowing violence - but these are the very people who seize on even the slightest homophobic remark to argue that it leads to gay-bashing. Notice also their complete contempt for anyone's privacy or personal dignity - a good indicator of a totalitarian mindset. Don't get me wrong. I'm all for their free speech. And I'm no fan of many of the individuals they oppose. But this kind of extremist, personal rhetoric is simply disgusting. It's equivalent to the hate-filled pro-lifers who discredit their cause by advocating the murder of abortionists. I don't know where these people get their hatred from, but it is as real and as dangerous as any of the right-wing hate groups who also deserve censure. These people do as much damage to the cause of gay equality and civility as anyone on the far right. It's time we stopped ignoring their evil.

MONKEY-FISHING?: James Taranto of OpinionJournal.com thinks I've been snookered by a site, usQueers.com, that's supposed to be a parody. And USQueers.com does have its fair share of campy excess. But James is wrong. The site I'm worried about is serious, extensive, and the owner of it is real. He's one Allan Ross, who told CNSNews.com that he was indeed unironic: "In a phone interview, Ross said he stands behind the content of his web site. But he added: 'It's certainly open to legal change if somebody points out that you're crossing the line here and legally you're saying, go out and do this, because we don't want anybody to go out and do this. The whole idea here was to say that they deserve to die for what they've done. I'm not standing behind calling for the death or murder or anything like that of anybody on this list at all. Or anybody listed on our web site. We do not call to murder anybody or hurt them or even touch them,' Ross said." So why then, one wonders, is the early and horrible death of named individuals called for on the site "by any means"? Then see what you make of this. Earlier this year, the following incident occurred at First Southern Baptist Church in San Diego. One Allan Ross had to be subdued by San Diego police for attacking a Baptist minister, David Powell. According to the Baptist News, "Powell said Ross initially asked to speak with the pastor ... Powell agreed to contact [Pastor] Lewis from the church office in the adjacent main building. As they were walking toward the office, Powell recounted that Ross revealed a jagged bottom of a glass bottle. 'I will hurt you if I have to,' Powell quoted Ross as saying. Powell said Ross also threatened to cut the artery in his neck and take his own life." According to the Baptist Press, Ross then took Powell hostage until he called the media, wanting to broadcast an anti-Baptist message. Ross was eventually overpowered by police. This article from the Catholic World News identifies this criminal with the same Allan Ross of the usQueers.com site. And on the site itself is this statement: "B. Allan Ross, was arrested for three felony violations he allegedly committed at the First Southern Baptist Church of San Diego, including the two most likely to be pursued in court - kidnapping and holding the church's janitor hostage."


LAVENDAR FASCISM: So am I over-reacting? Sure, Ross represents a minuscule portion of gay culture. Sure, his site is fringe and obscure. And sure, Ross may well be a bit unhinged. But none of this makes his specific threats against named individuals any less real. In fact, it makes them more real. I guess it's having been subjected to death-threats from far left gay activists myself that makes me realize these people are for real. (Last summer, a legit gay website, Datalounge.com, having fomented a vicious witch-hunt against me last spring, broadcast a specific threat to have my own "skull cracked open" in Provincetown. It took a week to get the owners to take the threat off the site, and they refused to apologize. They still won't disown the death-threat.) The truth is these extremists are not parodists. And they're not monkey-fishers. They're dangerous cranks, who get a pass from the liberal gay establishment, so long as they keep terrorizing straights or non-p.c. gays. Again, I support their right to free speech. I don't believe their site should be censored or shut down. But they are the gay equivalent of the anti-abortion murderers and the Klan. It's time we said so - don't you think, Mr Taranto? Or do we have to wait for the unthinkable to happen before we speak up?

MORE GAY EXTREMISM: James Taranto conceded yesterday he'd been too hasty in dismissing my worry about usQueers.com. In fact, the problem of some gay extremists violating basic norms of propriety in civil discourse is finally getting some attention. Two such activists were arrested today in San Francisco for "allegedly stalking and threatening newspaper reporters and Public Health Department workers." I feel bad because one of them, Michael Petrelis, has done good work in the past, but appears to have gone completely off the edge in the past couple of months. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, "Newspaper employees said the men made dozens of obscene and threatening phone calls earlier this month to their homes and at work. A bomb threat also was made to the San Francisco Chronicle's offices." This isn't new. Until you've been targeted by these extremists, you don't know how vicious they can be: phone calls at all hours of the day and night, threats of violence, intimidating relatives and ex-boyfriends. They have no sense of decency. ACT-UP did many good things, but it also tolerated and fomented a fascistic approach to civil politics that has metastasized since. I'm glad this has come to a head. And I hope the mainstream gay groups like the Human Rights Campaign will finally denounce the tactics of violating privacy, threatening violence and general puerility that sadly infects much gay extreme left activism. So far, such mainstream groups have simply been silent or craven, terrified that they might be next on the list. It's time for them to speak up in defense of privacy, decency and civility in the gay rights movement, and condemn thuggery in all its forms.

'These types of sites, on either side of any debate, should be condemned in the strongest possible way,' Smith said." Amen, David. And thanks.

I am experiencing a change of temperament, if that is the word. I have mostly gone through life as a short-term pessimist and a long-term optimist, but now I find, and perhaps it's only temporary, that I am increasingly a short-term optimist and a long-term pessimist. That's not quite right. I am certain there is a heaven, which is not a pessimistic belief. But my long-term thoughts about the world are not as sunny as once they were.

And yet I am happy each day and enjoy my life.

While I am worried about the future in a way I cannot shake.

The friend who had e'd me followed up with news that the Chinese are creating dozens of cloned embryos in their labs. The British medical journal New Scientist has reported a Chinese team "based at Shanghai No. 2 Medical University" says it has "derived stem cells from hybrid embryos composed of human cells and rabbit eggs." The journal said scientists throughout the world fear similar research in the US and UK has been "bogged down" by "ethical concerns."

Ah, those pesky ethical concerns. They slow you up just when you could be creating in a Petri dish the recipe for Rabbit Man. And then of course you could grow him, bring him into being, for all but dunces know that what man can do he will do(*). And then perhaps once you've grown him you can have Rabbit Man for dinner.

As far as Tom Clancy's reaction to Sept. 11th...

This is kiddies' stuff compared to what has gone on in the past. The fact is, the US has always had a contraction of civil liberties during wartime, but they were always restored. There was John Adams' Alien and Sedition Acts, Lincoln's suspension of habeus corpus, Ulysses Grant's expulsion of Jews, FDR's locking up of Japanese Americans etc: all much worse than what we have now. But as history shows, freedom and civil rights were always restored.

If you're referring to the 'threat' of someone actually using the phrase 'God bless America' in a sign at a school (see http://www.sacbee.com/news/news/old/local03_200110 13.html for more information) then yep -- I suppose the ACLU is right on target.

If you're referring to Ashcroft 'investigating' whether or not we should create a national ID system, or convict hackers to life in prision (a little extreme, if you ask me) -- the ACLU has been strangely silent (as far as I know -- correct me if I'm wrong, of course).

Sadly, I think the ACLU is actually adding to the distraction of the real issues in our country right now. They're not helping anyone but their own best intrests (which as far as I know, is nothing new).

I think the real issue that the bugs the hell out of the ACLU right now is that it's becoming fashionable to 1.) Stand up against folks like the ACLU who are simply distracting America from being patriotic 2.) Be a patriotic American 3.) Be a 'God fearing' American 4.) be a soldier, actually taking part in an effort to stop terrorism.

Peggy Noonan said it best with her column this past week, "Welcome back Duke" (referring to John Wayne, of course).

Now that I thik about it ... didn't the Dukes of Hazard drive a Grand Torino ? Or was that was Starsky & Hutch ? I can't remember ... all them muscle cars look alike to me. Either way, I would think both of them are better at getting babes than some emotionally-challenged import.

Larry Ellison penned an editorial in the Wall Street Journal last week, and it made it to today's free web-based opinion page, Opinion Journal. You can find it here. He makes the argument that everyone's tracking us anyway, so why not just compile it all into one database? Thanks, Larry, but no thanks.

The post says "only today" but that only holds for the (directness of the) link. Yes it's a news graphic, but it should still be accurate. I think the suspicion that the media is biased, perhaps unintentionally, on this issue is supported by the loose checking of such things. Now, if all that is wrong is the labelling of 1900 instead of 2000 (or whatever it's supposed to be), the factual evidence of the graph is not hurt (not to say I agree or disagree with the predictions). However, the fact that the mislabelling (or perhaps more serious problems) was missed indicates that the graphs are not being checked very closely. Now I may be wrong, but if that graph was evidence against global warming, I would guess that it would have been scrutinized rather closely.

More evidence of a media bias: check out what one of the author's of the NAS's June report had to say about the media's treatment of the report.

You would think that we could just read reports such as the NAS' report on climate change and identify the conclusions of climate experts. That turns out not to be the case. Often nonscientists (sometimes with their own agendas) write the conclusions. You should take a look at this letter written by MIT Meteorologist, Richard Lindzen, one of the report authors. He claims that the summary reaches much different conclusions than the report itself. The essence of Dr. Lindezn's position is, "But--and I cannot stress this enough--we are not in a position to confidently attribute past climate change to carbon dioxide or to forecast what the climate will be in the future."
