Re:Nope...
For single-family homes, if you're really worried about theft then you integrate a secure package receiving chute into the wall next to the front door or you put a different mailbox/post in, with such a device.
If you're living somewhere higher-density than that or cannot make modifications, and if your building has no doorman or has no provision to securely receive packages for you, then you should probably consider either Amazon Locker or else USPS General Delivery so that someone receives your package for you.
The only way I would want strangers delivering things into my house is if it's a small local private company that I've vetted myself, and that I've established the rules of entry for. I'm thinking keypad access where when I make a purchase, I dictate the ten digit number that they have to use to unlock the front door, that only works for five minutes from the time it's first entered when they arrive, and is authenticated on my equipment rather than on theirs.

"Mr. Microsoft" - I've SEEN your talent level
"But where *are* they?? Most of the candidates from domestic CS programs are, frankly, very weak candidates." - by bratmobile (550334) on Friday September 28, @11:11AM (#41488555)
They are certainly NOT YOU, because I've seen the "mettle" of MS mgt. in terms of understanding in Computer Science (having gotten 1 of your SENIOR MGT. people to concede points of mine) -> http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1467692&cid=30384918
I wasn't impressed by that from he, & in fact?
FAR from it in fact!
Why?
Well, since it told me that YOUR MGT. @ MS IS NOT THAT "SAAVY" IN COMPUTER SCIENCES @ ALL!
Thus:
WHO ARE YOU & YOURS TO COMMENT ON WHO KNOWS WHAT?? Especially those of you in mgt. roles!
(Especially considering that the person noted, Foredecker, has his CSC degree too!)
---
I've done the same to one of your TOP PhD's too (Dr. Mark Russinovich) catching VERY ROOKIE HARDCODES IN HIS WORK!
To which I had to tell him how/when/where/why/what he "screwed up" on & how to correct for it via the NtAPI (native) call interface to make it right -> http://www.pcmech.com/article/defragging-the-windows-page-file/ & at least HE thanked me via email for it...
That, as well as my proving way, Way, WAY AHEAD OF TIME that "dedicating all free RAM to cache" would NOT work on VISTA vs. Dr. Mark Russinovich too - to which he was UNABLE TO COMBAT MY POINTS/EXAMPLES, backed by MS' own documentations no less!
(*NIX's manage memory GLOBALLY is why, Windows doesn't)
To which YOUR COMPANY MICROSOFT WAS FORCED TO ISSUE PATCHES to reduce cache memory aggression -> http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/internals-and-architecture/the-memory-optimization-hoax
In addition to how memory optimization programs unhalt frozen/stalled exchange servers, terminal servers, database engines, & FAR more...
(So much for PhD's too, eh?)
---
"There are exceptions, but they are exceptions." -
There certainly ARE, even @ Microsoft... that much I've shown by EXAMPLE from both your mgt., AND your "top flite engineers"...
APK
P.S.=> Unless YOU have spent years-to-decades "hands-on 'in the trenches'"? Who are YOU to judge anyone on their skillset?? I say that not to YOU so much personally, as I do the ENTIRE mgt. strata in any company in this art & science of computing...

4chan's home of "Anonymous" (no thanks)
So, I see you're having trouble w/ this too -> http://yro.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2802947&cid=39776295
(in regards to Jay "fatboy" Little)
This too -> http://yro.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2802947&cid=39771369 where I merely asked you to disprove my points on hosts files!
Why's that, hmmm? You can't... & that IS that.
LMAO @ U: U FAIL, or better yet? This will "tell the tale" on you here -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVmBAd76kak from my fav. film this year (Capt. America)
Yes, there also in the link about Blimp-Boy Jay Little??
Unfortunately, I also took down a former "co-contractor/co-worker" for Sunbelt Software in the mid-to-late 1990's of mine Dr. Mark Russinovich (now @ Microsoft), as well in that exchange @ Windows IT Pro forums also...
Dr. Mark Russinovich PhD, whose work I even corrected "rookie hardcodes" before that article & by telling him how/what/when/where/why it failed (pagedefrag.exe -> http://www.pcmech.com/article/defragging-the-windows-page-file/ ) to which he thanked me for in email)
Hey - @ least he did THAT - he has class... Jay "fatboy" Little doesn't & got severely BURNED for it. Served him right, he brought it on himself.
However, Dr. Mark's SUPPOSED to know the OS inside-out, & is often referred to as such...
(Certainly as a PhD, & not to hardcode as well being a doctor of computing, literally...!)
However... then, I blew his doors out for attacking a class of apps I wrote the 1st GUI model of!
Bigtime... absolutely.
See - PhD's don't matter to me, I take them on & dust them too... Especially when I can PROVE I am literally correct! And, I did... bigtime, see the link on Jay Little... lol!
(MS did one before it in character mode, clearmem.exe, that is proven to unfragment RAM & get stalled or lagged Exchange Servers working again without reboots - which is part of how I absolutely "DUSTED" Blimp-Boy Jay Little, to which all he has now is a lot of "b.s." on his personal website... lol!)
* HOWEVER - Unlike Jay Little? Well... Dr. Mark Russinovich of Microsoft I respect though!
I even wished him well @ MS after that fiasco @ Windows IT Pro -> http://blogs.technet.com/b/markrussinovich/archive/2006/07/18/on-my-way-to-microsoft.aspx because he created ProcessExplorer (I can't & won't disrespect a guy that does that).
In fact?
I think HE ought to be the next guy to lead MS -> http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2792155&cid=39718511 even though "lil' ole' me" has "proven the GOOD DOCTOR WRONG" & even had to show him how & WHY to correct wares of his before too.
APK
P.S.=> Poor trolls... above all else - Do you *think* I'm going to follow you links OFF of this site here, onto 4Chan, home of trolls/hacker-crackers, etc./et al?
No, I don't *think* so... lol!

Bloke who wrote that guide helped Dr, Russinovich
Thanks for the links, though, I've never read any of those guides, just had a lot of experience dealing with this kind of bullshit on behalf of others. Though I have read plenty of articles by the great Russinovich himself. Now those are some good reads.
The bloke who wrote the guide used to work alongside Dr. Mark Russinovich for the same company (Sunbelt) in the same period in the 1990's and the bloke even actually corrected 'the great Russinovich himself' in code, believe it or not http://www.pcmech.com/article/defragging-the-windows-page-file/ when he found that Dr. Russinovich had actually hardcoded the path to C: drive in pagedefrag.exe for the location of the pagefile.sys and to the eventlogs and registry hives (all can be moved to other drives to lessen the work C drive does, provided a user has multiple disks) and from what I read at Windows IT Pro, Dr. Russinovich even thanked him in email for it. That bloke posts here as anonymous coward, and signs his posts as 'APK'. His guide (cut from his post I found and bookmarked it here as) for securing Windows turns up results like this for users (quoted):
HOW TO SECURE Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003, & even VISTA/Windows 7 (+ make it "fun-to-do" via CIS Tool Guidance & beyond):

It works, & is based on the concept of what many computer security folks the past few years have been calling "LAYERED SECURITY"...
PROOFS/EXAMPLES OF ITS EFFICACY? Ok, below:
----
"the use of the hosts file has worked for me in many ways. for one it stops ad banners, it helps speed up your computer as well. if you need more proof i am writing to you on a 400 hertz computer and i run with ease. i do not get 200++ viruses and spy ware a month as i use to. now i am lucky if i get 1 or 2 viruses a month. if you want my opinion if you stick to what APK says in his article about securing your computer then you will be safe and should not get any viruses or spy ware, but if you do get hit with viruses and spy ware then it will your own fault. keep up the good fight APK." - Kings Joker, user of my guide @ THE PLANET
AND
"I recently, months ago when you finally got this guide done, had authorization to try this on simple work station for kids. My client, who paid me an ungodly amount of money to do this, has been PROBLEM FREE FOR MONTHS! I haven't even had a follow up call which is unusual." - THRONKA, user of my guide @ XTremePcCentral
AND
"APK, thanks for such a great guide. This would, and should, be an inspiration to such security measures. Also, the pc that has "tweaks": IS STILL GOING! NO PROBLEMS!" - THRONKA, user of my guide @ XTremePcCentral
AND
"Its 2009 - still trouble free! I was told last week by a co worker who does active directory administration, and he said I was doing overkill. I told him yes, but I just eliminated the half life in windows that you usually get. He said good point. So from 2008 till 2009. No speed decre

Now that we KNOW you see AC posts?
Per my subject line above, answer my questions below about the IRAM & also if you are a professional coder (need proof, after all, you asked it of myself & I provided it, easily & freely - strange you do not (NOT))
Especially now that we all can see you are evading them (gee, I wonder why? NOT!), & especially after I quite EASILY manipulated you into giving away the fact that you DO see my "A/C" posts here -> http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1230601&cid=27948295 , so all your evading answering my questions below only shows that you HAVE been evading them (too easy to flush you out, hubris IS your undoing)
That all proven? Now, quit evading my questions below, & just answer the questions below that I asked, since you see my posts!
(& also, tell us, won't you (lol) how the Gigabyte IRAM is a "finicky piece of trash" when it operates reliably in Windows, but not in Linux (according to you @ least) - gee, I wonder what the 'piece of finicky trash' is (not Windows & the IRAM, but it seems rather your "OS of choice" in Linux & its SATA device access)...

First, prove what you claimed about yourself, in your allegedly being a professional programmer (because all your errors from the past week now & more don't show any of us you are that is certain, lol!) & tell us more about the Gigabyte IRAM being a piece of trash (it works on Windows, but not Linux according to YOU @ least, so what is the "trash" here? "Google failed to find any offical mention of your work with Russinovich" - by ion.simon.c (1183967) on Monday May 04, @10:57PM (#27825779)
GOOGLE didn't fail, YOU DID (as usual, per this reply AND the list of your screwups here I enumerate below in this exchange)...
See this -> http://www.pcmech.com/article/defragging-the-windows-page-file/ (& the comment by "SuperFluid" there)
YOU can't even GOOGLE something right, lol...
LOL, trouble is, you're showing yourself to be nothing more than a "I can't do anything w/out GOOGLE" type online... and, you say you're a programmer? PROVE IT (how do you like it? That's the kind of crap you've been saying to me & I provide proof below... lol, you do not & have NOTHING LIKE THE LISTS I PROVIDE BELOW, to your credit)

For Sunbelt Software (I'll save you the time there) to whom we contracted out wares we had written, thru LC (& also MANY years later, in 2003, when I fixed up his pagedefrag program, instructing him where it was hardcoded and how/why it could adversely affect the operations of his application if people moved their pagefile.sys location (which is doable on both accounts) to another disk (he had them hardcoded to C: drive only, & it made his program fail - he emailed me back thanking me in fact).

"You're thread's not stickied on xtremepccentral, btw. Why is that? It's not stickied over on Ars, either. Why is that?
:)" - by ion.simon.c (1183967) on Monday May 04, @02:18AM (#27812855)I don't believe they do that, & I can't get that EVERY place I imagine though I'd like to!
(However, my guide IS rated "5/5 stars" there, AND is in the top 2 most viewed of all time @ that website within the forums section it is featured on)...
NOW, for what You're asking for now? Well, it has done so in becoming an "Essential Guide", & on these websites:

On many websites, it is in their top 1-5 most viewed usually, or "5/5 star rated" many times, would you like a list of those also?? Heh, sad really, all those years you claim to have been on a PC & yet accomplished nothing on your end apparently. I.E.-> My guide alone thus is, by far, more than YOU have shown you have ever done over 22++ yrs. on these machines on your part, for comparison's sake!)

Re:Apple isn't even spending that
Unlike other big companies, Apple doesn't even give research grants to academia in any significant quantity (they just charge an arm and a leg for their machines).

Exciting!
Could this mean the end of the infernal beast that is Gateway? Will we no longer be subject to their shoddy assembly-line computers and annoying marketing campaigns?
If only Dell would go down the tubes, too. Then maybe people would have to figure out how to put together their own computers
... it's not that complicated, and you save a huge wad of cash by doing it. Hell, you can even look up a how-to guide online. The economy would likely benefit if people saved money by working on their own equipment, displacing all of those assembly-line workers and retail tycoons into more productive jobs -- jobs which would become available, eventually, since the money saved would be put into other areas of the economy, creating larger overall markets for other businesses.
Not to mention that the country would probably benefit passively, as a whole, if people were suddenly aware of all the tasks you could apply computers to (as a result of being forced to assemble their own). It would make businesses and gov't agencies in every sphere more optimized.
>_> What, I can dream.

Re:Nvidia Linux Drivers
There's a world of difference between writing a modern graphics card display driver and writing a little utility to poke a couple of bytes into a card.
And another world of difference between poking a couple of bytes into an older graphics card (that had all of its video modes available to be read) and poking a couple of bytes into a newer graphics card that hides its capabilities.Oh yeah?
From the summary:
However, coming out in June of 2005 from the NVIDIA camp was CoolBits support for their alternative operating system drivers."
Followup: From PC Mechanic, by way of google:
More and more, gamers, performance addicts, and adventurous computer enthusiasts are getting deeper and deeper into tweaking and overclocking their computers. To facilitate this process, and unlock a plethora of additional features related to the performance of your nVidia GeForce Video Card(s), Coolbits answers the call.
In other words, there's a world of difference between what you believe, and what is true. nVidia explicitly makes available the tweaking/overclocking functionality since last year even on linux, and since before that on Windows.

Re:Thank you
"I doubt the PC would be quite as popular today as it is if it weren't for Gates."
Of course it would have, the simple fact of Moore's Law continuously decreasing the size and power-requirements of silicon-based electronics made the popularity of personal computing devices an inevitability. Apple, IBM, or most likely DEC would have carried that torch had Bill and Microsoft never existed. -
Very Noticable Void
I am a manager at PCMech [pcmech.com], and we recently published a very straightforward, windows-user-friendly install and transition guide for Ubuntu Linux. This guide has gotten thousands of hits in just a few weeks, and the author has gotten more than 100 responses to it. The reason it works is that the guide is not so technical that you have to be a linux user to install it. That's a big problem out there - guides assume you know what you are doing. We got one person who complained that he didn't try and build on the wiki, instead writing something of personal interest instead of helping the community. Really, what they are doing is *hurting* the community by not making such resources availible. The guides can be found here: http://www.pcmech.com/show//903/ [unbuntu install guide http://pcmech.com/show/os/917/ [windows to linux transition guide]

Re:Back in the day..
This account of processor history http://www.pcmech.com/show/processors/35/2/ seems to disagree.
486's were not nearly so expensive at that time considering they had discontinued the 386 by 1991. -
GEM
Windows was pretty much a take-off on earlier GUIs (and in particular the Mac).
Don't forget GEM either. The Macintosh, being a different architecture, was less of a threat. GEM, however, ran on the same hardware. -
Re:Intel vs. US Treasury Dept
This reminds me of a comment I heard early in my career at Intel, when the 387 (the original match co-processor, anyone remember those?) went on sale:
There were earlier Intel math coprocessors for the x86 line I believe.
However, your point is still valid.

Re:Right
how exactly do you bork a Windows installation these days? As long as u pick the right partition to install on its not really possible.
See here and here. The latter link is to MS's own troubleshooting page, with remedies like "Make sure that you have the latest drivers, firmware and BIOS for the computer and all hardware. If you don't know whether you have the latest firmware or an updated BIOS, contact your hardware manufacturer or check their Web site" and "Temporarily remove all hardware that's not required by Setup (modems, sound cards, and network cards)".
Sounds borkable, and these resolutions don't sound like tasks for naive users.

Re:Master / Slave HDD
My main point is that Master and Slave are NOT synonymous with Primary and Secondary. A secondary need not be subject to the whims of the primary, where a slave is subject to the whims of a master.
http://www.pcmech.com/glossary/master_slave.htm
You shouldn't take assumed/emotional meanings attached to the words master and slave out of the context they are used in.
The primary definition of slave is someone who is the property of another. So upon hearing/reading the word most people would consider that definition, before finding the more appropriate one. To do otherwise would be as contrived as reading "minute hand" as tiny hand. -
You've got to be Jaschan
The reason he created the Sasser worm was to drum up business for his mother's fledgling PC security company. So, by at least one account, that makes him a decent son as well. You've got to be Jaschan

Re:Alternatives
The working Build Your Own link. I have also found that DIT to be fairly low priced, and it has local stores.

Re:Liability Insurance and a Lawyer
Whatever, guy. I have an AT case with an AT motherboard with a Pentium III 1000 MHz. AGP video card too. This sucker can run Quake3 just fine. No modifications to case, motherboard, CPU, or anything.

Re:AMD vs Intel
I agree with the original poster. According to this the K6 and PII were both released in 1997. I remember debating whether to buy a PII or K6 at the time, actually. While the K6 matched some early PIIs in integer performance, I remember reading many Boot magazine articles ridiculing the K6's phenomenally bad, not-fully-pipelined FPU. As the PII line progressed, you basically only got a K6 if you never executed an FPU operation (ie. played a game!)

Re:SCSI?
The performance overhead of SCSI over IDE comes from structure of the bus, not the drive. The nature of the SCSI bus allows it much better performance when doing data hungry tasks such as multi-tasking. The SCSI bus controller is capable of controlling the drives without any work by the processor. Also, all drives on a SCSI chain are cable of operating at the same time. With IDE, one is limited to two drives in a chain, and these drives cannot work at the same time. In essence, they must "take turns".
For most people, IDE is just fine and offers very good performance. The reason I believe one does not need to get SCSI, though, is that most users do not use their system in a way that would actually justify the SCSI bus. While the nature of the bus is faster, it takes certain situations to actually need it. Couple this with the significantly higher price, one can see that they can easily live with IDE.
