First off, it was written before they knew that bungie was going to continue the halo series, so they didn't know.

Second, they actually say right in there that the most likely thing would be for bungie to make the next halo, but for another studio to do titles between bungie releases (much like Call of Duty 3 or the NWN expansion packs).

The points are well written and thought out, although Tycho points out two more that would be great for the job.

However, maybe it is good that they fined them nearly a billion. I, too, doubt that that alone will make much of a dent in Microsoft's budget, but maybe it sets a precedent, and other nations may start doing the same. South Korea, for instance, springs to mind. One billion dollar fine might not make much, but if a large enough number other nations start fining Microsoft for anti-trust violations, they might have to do something real about it. Even if these nations are just out for the money, they still need some legal pretext in order to act, so if Microsoft will wish to avoid it, they might actually have to comply with the law or retract from business in those nations.

I know I might just be overly optimistic, but one must keep one's hopes up, right?

Either way, I'm much more optimistic about the "sharing of server protocols" part of the judgment. It would be great being able to use Samba as an AD controller.

You're kind of reinforcing my point there. Quoting irrational message board comments is not an argument. I defy you to name a platform that doesn't have its irrational fanboys. The guy you're talking about had a negative attitude about Linux for other reasons. At most, extremists users were an excuse or rationalization.

If we address the real reasons that people form negative preconceptions about Linux, the whackjobs (and note: I'm not saying the 'free software purists' are 'whackjobs') won't matter.

While I've seen some truly idiotic crap from fans of a particular console manufacturer, this is beyond everything I've ever seen before. It can't be real. The writer is either bat-shit insane, or joking. Occam's razor suggests that explanation 2 is probably true :-)

It's not just about "offensive" ads...It's ads that slow down your goddamn page loads, because the page waits for the massively overloaded ad server to finish loading its ad before the rest of the content pops up. Screw that.

I block ads from most big banner providers because I hate them. For sites that depend on that revenue I tend to buy their stuff, or subscribe, or donate, or whatever.

For small providers or people who host their own ads? I don't block 'em. They're usually not as annoying to me as the interminable "Punch the Monkey to Win an XBox/iPod/Whore" ads and I don't mind giving them my business. Hell, to use an over-wrought example, look at Penny Arcade...They put thought into the ads they choose to host, and the ads are relevant and informative to the people who frequent their site.

So user ID doesn't mean you know everything? Wow. (Admittedly mine is huge, but mostly because I've never botherd to make an account until recently...so I never judge based on UID).

I'd say the majority (at least 80%) of Slashdot regulars know and despise Jack Thompson. It started with that trial, but he has been an annoying wart on the video game industry's toe ever since then, constantly proclaiming how video game violence is destroying society, etc. He has also been in a couple good squabbles with the guys that run Penny Arcade. And since you may not be in the 80%+ of regulars who know who they are, then I'll just sum it up by saying they are probably the most-read video game webcomic on the net, to the point that they have a pretty substantial video game expo every year.

So perhaps if you'd checked Slashdot since you created your account, you might have known who this guy is and not made a fool of yourself. I will give you some credibility on the fact that this might deserve to be under video games instead of politics...but that's about it.
