Consider signing this petitionSlashdotters may want to consider signing the Anti-DMCA Petition. You may also want to check out the Petition Against Software Patents. I yield superiority to gnu.org for bringing these to my attention.
Note that anyone can peruse the signatures and comments (a good idea to help sign the petition with an intelligent comment), but it appears that only U.S. citizens can sign. Of course, it's also a good idea to read the petition fully rather than blindly signing.

If you want Ogg Vorbis...
...to be the next biggest thing, we need more hardware support for Ogg Vorbis players. Please sign this petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/vorb123/petition.ht
m l which aims to convince hardware manufacturers to include ogg vorbis support in their products. Many people are complaining that they can't make the move to Ogg Vorbis unless it gets hardware support. If we can get enough signatures to convince manufacturers to start supporting Ogg Vorbis, this is the biggest barrier overcome. -
Galactica
The latest announcement has gotten fans of the original Battlestar Galactica more than worried since it's speculated that the new series is going to be more or less "Battlecreek 90210" ignoring basically everything from the original. This is despite the fact that a petition has over 14000 signatures in support for the original cast and themes. Recently a new one has been created with a more strict tone.

Re:Amber and Forever War, too...
One that caught many off guard though is a 4-hour mini-series based on the 70's TV series classic "Battlestar Galactica". Its been well known that "X-Men" producer Tom DeSanto has been developing Galactica for over a year now with Bryan Singer first attached (he pulled out of directing duties later on). The announcement today mentioned neither of them, rather people like Star Trek writer Ronald D. Moore penning, David Eick ("American Gothic", "Spy Game") exec producing and Breck Eisner directing. The worrying thing is that rumours are indicating this will forget pretty much all the old show's characters and rather be a teen 90210 style adventure in space, however the decision won't be finalised for a few weeks.
A petition exists in support of the orirginal cast and themes. It was created while Bryan Singer and FOX network were still in the picture but the purpose of the petition is still valid. -
They haven't fixed page widening either

Too bad I must protest... and you can too!
I've been waiting for ages for Blizzard to release this game. Yet Blizzard's actions force me to boycott all of their products until they change their stance.
To re-establish our rights to do with purchased products as we please (without a fight in the courts) do your part by sending a note to change their stance on this abuse of the DMCA and our rights as consumers to Vivendi Universal Publishing's corporate communications contact at:
benoit.liva@vupublishing.net
and
Or - preferably - contact them via snail mail at Blizzard's corporate headquarters and copy Vivendi Universal, and if the 34 cents is too much, fax them - I couldn't find a fax number for the responsible division :-(
Chilling Effects - DMCA and BNetd has the best answers to what Blizzard's use of the DMCA against ISPs, and the DMCA's provisions, really mean to all of us. -
Go sign the petition to have them investigated!!
Here's the link.

Petition for DOJ InvestigationYay! Glad that Google re-listed Operation Clambake. If there is any site that deserves to stay listed despite the DMCA, this is it. However, I still feel that the DOJ really should look into Scientology's actions, many of which are downright illegal. I actually made a post regarding this in the other forum, but here it is again because this issue's too important... SIGN THE PETITION!
Well, well, well... upon hearing this news, my first thought was of disgust - disgust that Google would help Scientology censor xenu.net into oblivion. However I couldn't help but wonder... who leaked the news to the media? If it was Google who informed the media about this while complying with the law, then I must admit it's a nice way to stir up the controversy and to inform people who/what Scientologists are really like. So.. who leaked?
:)While lurking around on Xenu.net, I saw that there's a petition to ask the DOJ to investigate the Church[sic] of Scientology. I signed it. How about you?
DOJ Petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/cofs1/petition.html
Getting on the soapbox for a second to rant a bit(since everyone else is doing it, why not?)
A comparision was made between Scientology and Al-Quaeda earlier on in this forum. Please! Let's be realistic here... Al-Quaeda isn't that bad!
:) At least they're honest when they say "Death to America!" while trying to kill you. With Scientology... well... they infiltrate. They smile and pretend to be your friend while reaching for your wallet. They play with your emotions. If you catch them in the act and try to speak out about it, they try (and usually succeed) to destroy your life. This is even in their DOCTRINE for crying out loud! They're the ultimate mind-fuckers.From dictionary.com:
terrorism Pronunciation Key (tr-rzm) n.
The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons.
So... if Scientology doesn't fall under this definition, just what IS terrorism anyway?

Fax, call, and click
As already mentioned, US citizens should fax your senators (both of them, since you vote for both of them), call their offices (both in Washington and the local ones), and then, if you still have energy, you can also sign an on-line petition here: http://www.petitiononline.com/SSSCA/petition.html

Re:Low Profile Mac OSX Server in the works
Apple Relizes that this is a share of the market place that it is missing - and I believe Apple is making it there - slowly.
I think you're right. Rumors on "Thing 2" (a rackmountable server) have been floating around for a while now.
If I were Apple, I'd combine a 1U rack unit with a variation of Microsoft's Mira: a wireless display that can connect to any Mac in the vicinity. Add USB to the display (for keyboard and mouse) and you've got the coolest KVM switch ever.
Oh, and there's a petition underway, too.

Ogg Vorbis Support in future players?

But how about rackmount servers from Apple?
Rumors on "Thing 2" (a rackmountable server from Apple) have been floating around for some time now. And there's a petition underway.
And 2U is not enough (or too much...). With blade servers being the new wave, even a 1U unit may be seen as taking up too much space.

Re:Is this the same industry claiming losses? No.
- Can DVD sales suffer from internet piracy? Possibly.
- DVD sales can be seriously hurt by P2P sharing. The MPAA has a few things they can do to prevent that, though. Loading DVD's up with features is one idea. The DVD still has value if the movie's getting downloaded, but the extras aren't. (Or am I in the minority of DVD purchasers because I care more about the bonus footage and making of scenes...?)
People who are seriously into cinema prefer to own an original copy DVD, rather than a cheap Divx/VCD rip they can only see in their computer (not everyone has a video board with tv-out).
Lot's of people who buy this DVDs are into the interviews, comments, deleted scenes, alternate endings and the stuff that usually gets on DVDs. Dispite that, DVDs are versatile to the point they can even have little Games themed to the movie for us to enjoy.
You can see that by checking the number os signatures of this petition to convince studios to leave extras in the DVDs.- Another good approach would be to get a handle on why people download the movies. Are they just curious if the movie is any good?

For those who are unfamiliar with the details of the bill, you will find them hereAlso, please sign the online petition that is posted online here

DMCA is still a problem.
We will never have our freedom until the DMCA is overturned. Better sooner than later - when the economy collapses because innovation has been brought to a standstill by stupid laws.
The DMCA means any programmer who can write a trivial encryption routine to "protect" (restrict) content can act as a legislator by making certain actions regarding that content illegal.
When a programmer can outlaw exercise of fair use rights to a piece of content - fair use rights become meaningless.
Isn't that an illegal delegation of power from Congress to those that write content "protection" (restriction) code? I think so.
Of course we can avoid their content - but that puts Linux at a disadvantage (people will cry "It can't play movies - unless you go to a bunch of criminal hackers and use (un-American) illegal software").
It is better than the SSSCA, which would at best seriously mess with Linux and at worst make it difficult or even illegal to run at all. -

Please, Help Abolish The DMCA
The DMCA harms every American. It allows organisations and corporations to terrorize citizens of the United States with threats of jail time and fines for citizens, scientists and academians (a Princeton professor was threatened to not publish a paper) who perform math and science. The DMCA makes is a crime to "circumvent" copyright protection systems, on materials you bought and that you have a right to fair use of. Essentially the DMCA is a war on education. The DMCA, or Digital Millenium Copyright Act (United States Code, title 17, chapter 12, section 1201 http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/1201.html), can put you in jail for creating, using, or distributing software to playback the DVD's you legitimately purchased on a computer you paid for. It can put you in jail for reading electronic books you pay for without authorisation from the publisher! In fact, Dmitri Sklyarov was arrested and imprisoned for writing such a software program. It can put you in jail for making copies of music you purchased so that you can listen to it in your car.
The DVD consortium locks each DVD disc with a key, and then gives the key to manufacturers of DVD players. The key itself is a number. With this key, one can rightfully play the DVD's one owns on his equipment. However, the DMCA makes it illegal to speak about or distribute said number! It makes it illegal to do math and science. This is a flagrant violation of your first amendment rights, which reads "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Please, sign the Abolish the Digital Millenium Copyright Act: http://www.petitiononline.com/nixdmca/petition.htm l Please, write to your US senators and representatives and tell them you want abolishment of the DMCA. You can find out their mailing and e-mail addresses at http://www.senate.gov and http://www.house.gov
The DMCA harms every American. It was bought by organisations that want to be able to completely control what, when, where, and how often you use media--television, books, music, and movies. The DMCA is not a valid exercise of Congress's enumerated powers. It is unconstitutional. Please show your support to strike down the DMCA. Please forward this notice along to your friends, family and co-workers.

Re:Probably the most poorly promoted show ever
Family Guy was the most poorly promoted show ever. Period. Sign the petition to save it!
-
... the family guy!
They also axed the family guy.
The futurama and the cable guy were the best shows on TV!
I never missed an episode. -
It's aparent Fox is full of retards
Because they've also canceled Family Guy twice already, just to bring it back.
There's also another petition on the same site for saving Family Guy. I figure sign them both, save Fox from going from Shitty Shitty Shitty to Stinky Farty Smelly. -
Not that I expect results, but...
...I went and signed the online petition to save Futurama, and while I was there put my name to the ones for Family Guy and Undeclared as well.
Anyone noticed that Fox seems to always cancel its good shows, while keeping unfunny shit like Malcolm in the Middle on along with voyeur crapola like Temptation Island?
When they finally do away with *all* the shows I love, I'll have to start referring to Fox as "the good taste takes a holiday" network.

Except ZIM!
I'm surprised only one person mentioned Invader Zim in all this. It has never been promoted, and Nick (which hasn't shown a new ep. since halloween) is holding supposed last ten eps of season one and scaled back season two from a new 20 shows to the 6 completed. It was easily one of the best cartoons on lately, and some weeks, it can still be seen at maybe 1pm on Sundays. There are Two Petitions going on the same site (the second is longer, but the first has about 32,000 more names.) And unlike the family guy reply below, IZ is plenty geekish.

What a Load of Shit
Slashdot, you suck. I don't care how this is modded.
I submitted almost this EXACT TYPE OF NEWS STORY about Family Guy ( Which is 100% funnier than Futurama ) and I got rejected so fast I still have the skid marks on my ass.
At the time, I figured that it was because Family Guy isn't technically a geek thing ( by some people's standards ). And now I see this. Bleh.
For those of you out there who *DO* care about Family Guy, you need to see the petition located here. You can also get info on snail-mail and pickiting here.
PS - Futurama isn't BAD, I just don't find it nearly as funny. -
online petitions..
To be quite honest, while I love shows like The Family Guy and Futurama, I question how much petitions like this do. True, they gave it a terrible timeslot, but the real "petition" is to watch it (although without a Nielsen box it doesn't do much).
I mean, looking through the petitions on petitiononline.com, we see:
1337 sp3ak in 5(}{00l !!
A petition to the WWF in honor of the Undertaker
Let's Import Japan
A bit hard to take this seriously, especially considering how little effort it takes to sign a petition. A bigger noise would be made by sending postcards, that would fill their mailboxes. -
