Re:antitrust bully?
It'd be nice to see them take on Apple and their bullshit use of the DMCA to shut down people trying to get iTunes to work on Linux.
There's some truth in what you say, but there's also truth that some of the trouble was inflicted on Linux users by those actively breaking FairPlay. Not everyone in LinuxLand sees it as a conspiracy to keep Linux users out. From an older Linux HOW-TO - http://209.85.173.132/search?q=cache:ls5Os0LmengJ:www.linux.com/feature/114269+itunes+linux+drm&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=safari
When the iTunes Store was exclusively selling encrypted content, permitting only the officially sanctioned client to interface with the store was imperative -- the client was responsible for encrypting the track with a unique user key after the raw, unencrypted version was downloaded. For unencrypted content, that is no longer necessary. Were Apple to let non-iTunes clients interface to the store it would still collect the revenue, and arguably more of it courtesy of more customers. Apple's bean-counters are certainly wise to that business opportunity, but cannot move on it so long as part of the store's inventory still requires encryption.
In support of what you're getting at (and, what I'm saying):
Projects like JHymn and QTFairUse periodically found a way to decrypt M4P files into vanilla AAC, but rarely was it a convenient solution. Often the decryption could only be done at real-time playback speeds or only on a platform with an official iTunes client. On top of that was the "arms race" factor -- Apple's periodic updates to the iTunes application or the store would break the decryption solution du jour.
But the real issue isn't iTunes - even if that's many people's hot button. iTunes is essentially an xml browser on top of QuickTime, btw.)
The real issue - if it does exist or if it will be uncovered - is that Apple supports Windows OS w/ QT+iTunes, but not Linux. Insofar as Apple (and a great many of its users) see OS X as a flavor of *nix, then Linux is a *nix competitor to OS X. Note the subtle difference - not an OS competitor, but a *nix competitor.
Bottom line is that 1) IANAL, 2) were this to go to court (Apple non-support of Linux) then Apple would likely also show that it doesn't support FreeBSD or HP-UX or a host of other Unices, and 3) I wouldn't be surprised if they got off the hook by presenting an analogy to the jury - like VHS tapes didn't play in a Betamax, because 4) they're already "supporting" their biggest competitor.
Besides - you'll need an advocacy group to bring your plight to the DOJ - sorry, good luck with that.
Perhaps a positive approach will help - you never know - http://www.petitiononline.com/itmslin/petition.html

New petition for T1&2 source release, please mo
The Thief fan community has been trying to get the source to Thief 1 & 2 released for several years but with little success - as a consequence of the bankruptcy of the original developer, it has been hard to even find out who might have it let alone be in a position to release it. However, recently there has been a glimmer of hope since one developer seems to have information about it but permission is still needed, which is why a new petition has been started. We want to improve the engine and enable it to run on modern systems so please slashdot the release petition:
http://www.petitiononline.com/ThiefSrc/
Note: This is not the same petition as before but a new one. So even if you have signed the old one, please sign this too.

The U.S. Copyright is total crap! To: The U.S. Supreme Court Justices
Dear Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., Justice John Paul Stevens, Justice Antonin Scalia, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, Justice David H. Souter, Justice Clarence Thomas, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Justice Stephen G. Breyer, Justice Samuel A. Alito:
We are writing to you regarding the case of Dr. Dongxiao Yue v. Sun Microsystems, et al., which is set for conference in January 2009 (Information of the case can be found at www.American-Justice.org and YouTube).
In November 2007, Dr. Yue sued defendants for pirating his PowerRPC software. Evidence included defendants' internal documents showing Sun knowingly sold unauthorized and unlimited copies of PowerRPC to others. However, in March 2008, former U.S. District Judge Martin J. Jenkins dismissed Dr. Yue's lawsuit without ruling on any of the copyright claims.
The District Court then awarded defendants $219,949.90 of attorneys' fees and costs under Section 505 of the U.S. Copyright Act.
While Dr. Yue's appeal is ongoing, on December 15, 2008, the District Court issued a Writ of Execution directing county sheriff to take possession of Dr. Yue's assets (primarily his copyrights and his family home where his two young children live), despite Dr. Yue's request for humanitarian consideration. Dr. Yue's application for stay at the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal was summarily denied without any explanation.
Awarding software pirates under U.S. Copyright Act would encourage infringement of intellectual property and would be detrimental to U.S. economy. The lower courts should have provided Dr. Yue equal protection as other American copyright owners.
We respectfully request that your Honor carefully consider Dr. Yue's arguments before the Supreme Court and make an equitable decision.Sincerely,

Re:What Charging Infrastructure?
What facts do you have to support your opinion that "very, very few people will pay new-car prices for a car that will go 150 miles then require a 3-hour recharge."?
Because I would buy a car like that in a heartbeat.
The average US commute is only 32 miles per day. People don't need a 500 mile range to commute to work everyday.
Here is an online petition with 1755 signatures wanting Mitsubishi to bring the i-MiEV to America, which gets 100 miles per charge and will sell for approximately $24,000.
Here is an article from NPR in which the president of Nissan says "Today, there is latent consumer demand, but no offer."
As gas prices continue to increase, there is plenty of demand for an affordable electric car. Just no one supplying them. -

An online petition is already available, with signees agreeing to either move to a cheaper plan, put their account on hold, or cancel their accounts entirely. Re:We need Linux applications not a virtual deskto
"WINE doesn't cut it, nice try, but you either have to tweak WINE or used a hacked/cracked version of the commercial software that has been modified to work with WINE due to copyright protection."
Please read how to get Worlds of Warcraft working under WINE, the average person doesn't want to take that many steps to make it work, plus using a hacked/cracked version that might have a trojan inside of it stealing data.
What I am talking about is having a Worlds of Warcraft native Linux version, just insert the CD, install, then play. No messing around with command lines, using malware cracked versions to patch it with, tweaking system files, changing WINE configurations, using WINE addons, and even still having game freezes and lockups even if everything is configured correctly.
You are just too damn stupid to read my entire post, aren't you? Most Linux geeks are like that.
Windows users don't want to do half-a-million steps, and use malware hacked files, and then still have freezes and lockups just to get WINE working properly to run games inside of it. They don't even want to RTFM or RTFA about what they need to do to force WINE to work the way they want it to work or Linux for that matter. They want an OS that works the way they want it to work, and native software programs that don't need crappy things like WINE to work, and native driver support for their third party software that is reliable, and an easy to use and configure OS that doesn't need complex steps to use, it shouldn't force the average user to read books or web pages, or to even think, it should be intuitive enough to work that the user just clicks the mouse a few times and takes no less than a few minutes to get things working. This isn't that hard to figure out. But really stupid people don't understand that, and thus they fail to see why Linux hasn't caught on as well as Windows has, or even Mac OSX is catching on. Windows and Mac OSX don't need too much work to get things to work, unlike Linux. -

Re:Ruh-roh
I'm not saying it's right, but that you're putting a highly emotive and anachronistic slant on a practice which Muhammad's contemporaries would probably never have dreamed of calling into question.
Funny how this old arab pervert's example continues quite regularly into the modern day.
Or how about this?
Or how about the fact that non-muslims still have to try to stop this in nigeria too?
Tells me a lot that the "ultimate example" of how to behave in the Muslim religion is a stinky, homicidal arab perv. -
Re:13" MacBook Pro
I just posted a link above, reporting on the MB Air's shitty market performance to date. Here are a couple more.

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/165960/macbook-air-sales-deflated.html
I can't locate sales figures for the 12" PB G4, but I can state anecdotally that I saw many of them, with satisfied owners. A reasonably fierce following, too. Conversely, I have not seen a single MB Air nor do I know anyone, including all members of a Mac users' mailing list I am on, who owns one or even wants to. I don't think Apple chose the most profitable market segment here. -

Not sure what to think...
Adobe seems to want to jump on the OSS bandwagon, which might make a lot of people smile... although,
....
- Flash isn't OSS
- The Linux Flash binary-only plugin is still WAY behind the Windows version in quality and stability (remember how long we had to wait for Flash 9.x on Linux??)
- Shockwave Director isn't OSS (and isn't even ported to Linux in a binary-only format, despite the 29511 signatures in the online petition that's been going on forever). Not a peep from Adobe on if this will ever even happen, even though revisions are still being made and it being widely used
- No intention of porting Flash to x86-64 platforms, on Linux -or- Windows (at least AFAIK)
- Just in my experience alone, COUNTLESS other buggy applications (like the other week, installing a version of Acrobat with a .0 known bug that plainly doesn't launch when executed without a fix from their website)
I agree Adobe has a LOT of momentum behind them with the Internet community. With this, however, comes great responsibility. If they want to play in the OSS playground, I think they need to share all of their toys like the others do. -
Petition for decent drivers (and open source supt)
Like anything else, there's now an online petition about this:
http://www.petitiononline.com/crtvlabs/petition.html
It demands decent drivers in the first place, decent driver support, properly labeled products, and support for OSS development. -

Adobe in particular is very stubborn about releasing versions of it's software for architectures other than x86. 64-bit Firefox will work with fine even with 32-bit Flash and Java using a plugin that was released with Ubuntu 7.10.
So, in summary don't blame Mozilla for Adobe's stubbornness. You can sign the petition to Adobe here, although it is unlikely to make a difference. The problem appears to be across Adobe's entire product line and on every operating system. -

That's nice, but how about FreeBSD?
Nice. But how about getting Flash to work natively on FreeBSD also? Petition here. There are over 5,600 signatures. FreeBSD currently uses the linux emulation layer to run flash, but it's not perfect.
