Europe may not have that many earthquakes, but the southern parts have gotten its fair share. The latest bigger one I can recall was last year in Greece.

As for wooden architecture, you don't have to go all the way to Japan to find it. When Christianity was introduced in Norway a thousand years ago people started building churces out of wood---so called Stave Chrches. Many of these churces from the 12th century are still standing. Depending on what tool/utility you use, encrypting the file doesn't necessarily wipe out the original unencrypted version in an unrecoverable way. To prevent recovery of deleted files, you want something like the "True Delete" utilities on this page.

I would recommend that anyone going on any diet start off with at least 2 weeks on Atkins. It really brings home how pervasive "junk carbs" have become in your personal diet. So much food is made of or coated or stuffed with starch and sugar.

Amen. When I heard the term "sugar addict" before, I always took it as hyperbole. But starting on the diet let me kick the habit. Now I recognize that I met the DSM IV criteria for addiction. That's spooky! Now I can sit next to an open candy jar and not touch it. I no longer have to run out and get a candy bar. And my moods are much, much more even.

It is bogus that "they" won't study Atkins properly. It isn't like they would have trouble finding volunteers. I only know it has to be better for me than being massively overweight - even with the risk of kidney stones.

No shit. I'd love to read a good anti-Atkins article, but this one wasn't it. It's the same warmed-over collection of stuff. Did it address any of Taubes "Endocrinology 101" stuff? Nope. Did it have any serious evidence that the risks of the Atkins diet even come close to the risks of staying obese? Nope.

Now I rarely talk about it with my friends. They just say, "Hey, you're losing weight!" And I just say, "Yep! I feel much better, too!"

A lot of respondents here have said that a shaped charge projects a jet of molten copper. Years ago, when I used to subscribe to sci.military, I made that mistake. Many of the correspondents there didn't hesitate to quickly set me straight, and explain that the shaped charge projects a plasma jet.

This newspaper article gets the scale wrong. It says the jet travels at around 1000 miles per hour, ie not much more than the speed of sound, whereas the Lawrence Livermore article I linked to above says the jet travels at 10,000 kilometers per second. Michael Smith, the telegraph's defence correspondent, was off by a factor of just 57,000,000.

One of the more interesting modern uses of titanium is actually an old form known as "chainmaille". Titantium wire, used in place of steel, is used to make intricate and exotic armor using this not-quite forgotten art form.

As it can be easily anodized (plated with a oxide that causes a color change by passing electricty through an electrolyte solution), it is one of the more popular metals for chainmaille jewelry as well.

First off, the url redirect isn't working too well so go here for a mirror of the download page, which includes the installer and the instructions of how to create a floppy image for *nix.
Having used the OS, I wanted to offer an opinion. The kernel, the author writes in his faq, is "real-time which is mainly monolithic, but some operations are done like in microkernel." For its small size, it is quite impressive to see how elaborate the gui and such are, especially being programmed in assembler. However, the OS itself isn't very powerful per se, and the memory requirement (32mb) is fairly large for such a small OS, which does not allow it to be used as a microkernel OS like mkLinux. Sure it has sound, but for the most part all that it does so far is edit text files, play music, and show pretty lights. Also, the HD interaction is, for now, limited to FAT and FAT32, so don't expect to use it as a Linux/Unix rescue disk.
On the plus side, the gui is impressive, along with the sound capabilities. Plus it's one of the most compact gui-based mini-OSes around, and being programmed in assembler it's fairly fast.
Pretty much I'm just saying that while it's an extremely interesting toy, I don't think it's "the next Linux" or anything close to it.
Even if it is from Finland ;)

This is very funny. The video is nicer, but streaming windows media player is hard to copy. It's an explaination from the IBM guy who invented ctrl-alt-delete explaing why he invented it. The setting is what looks like a tv news interview show. Bill Gates is there too.

You'll have to rename the file to mp3. It's easier to download stuff from prohosting if the server doesn't recognize it. You understand. :-)

Well, the organic feel and sound of vinyl will be very hard to replicate electronically... Carrot Innovations has created Virtual Turntables (shareware) which does a fairly decent job of emulating some qualities of a set of turntables. I admit I haven't used it in over a year, but as a toy, it was certainly interesting.

I've heard rumors of Pioneer and Technics making "CD Turntables" that will let you "scratch" your CDs back and forth and make it sound close to a vinyl table. Haven't used or seen these, but a DJ friend of mine told me about them... Here is a page selling them.

OT, but I was thinking, how cool would it be to have your own custom vinyl cutter? Then you can combine your mp3 collection with your vinyl collection... :)

Heck I would do it excrept for the following:
1. Somebody needs to write a boilerplate letter, and I don't feel I'm skilled enough to come up with a good one.
2. I probably only get one or two submissions
3. I get slashdoted and get thousands of submissions and it costs $$ to mail them all.

You'll have to highlight the text to see the code, or just look at the HTML document in a text editor. I think it's a pretty neat way to get the source code out with some degree of stealth.

UNIX has several advantages over just about anything else for distributed networking. It was built for networking and I don't see any reason why, with only minimal improvements, it can't be used in distributed networking.

I wrote the following article and got it published in my local paper.

I've seen one person come up with some better one ... a few days ago someone posted the anology of books being published in a secret language so that you had to take it to a translator to have it read to you. Then somebody publishes the translation key to the secret language (CSS) so that you can read you book yourself whenever you wish.

This one seemed to be pretty good especially when somebody else brought up the analogy with the secret language and latin where it was considered blasphy to read the bible unless you were a member of the clurgy in the middle ages.

Another note: This may not help us with the NY case, but may very well help us with the one in california. If you follow this link you will discover that Cirrus Logic has patented a circuit implementing the CSS algorithm and thus making it public, and no-longer a trade secret.

I don't know if this patent would effect a software decoder or not ... I don't think so, but IANAL so that may not be the case. If the California case is based on the keys being trade secret (even though they are on every DVD) then this may not get us directly out of hot water, but I have an idea that may work...

Since there are only 64K actual decoding keys, and there probably is a signature in the MPEG2 frames that could be keyed off of
1. I would think it would be possible to brute force the decryption keys for a disk down to a manageable number without using the key information stored on the DVD.
2. You could setup a database on the net like CDDB that your open source DVD player could get the key for playing the disk from.
Then once the key was found an individual would not have to manually sift though the possible keys to play their disk, but if they were the first one to run accross a disk they could submit it to the database for everybody else to use.

Somebody also posted that the studios have a right to require you to use players that they bless ... I just read though all the accompaning documentation for my dozen or so DVDs and no place do I see where there is a statement of any of the following:
1. that I can only use licenced players
2. that reverse engineering is not allowed
3. I'm not allowed to make copies for personal use
4. That the disks use or contain Trade Secret or patented information
There are notes that the works are copyrighted and that I'm not allowed to make Illeagal copies, and that public performance or re-distribution is not allowed without permission from the copyright holder.

Actually that's a pretty good one, but I would have made it convert to ascii/pdf instead of MP3. Kusweil (I think) has a decent machine to do just that, but it's pretty expensive and so is rather limited especially since it's a special purpose device. Also there are OCR to brail coverters also I've seen, maybe somebody should make a version that runs under linux on a standard PC.

Smaller newspapers seem more than willing to publish alternative views to issues, so here is everybody's chance to fight back a little and write to all your local newspapers and let them know your/our side of the story. If you don't write and support groups like the EFF & ACLU you get what you deserve.

I work as a computer programmer by profession, and am a website developer and computer enthusiast by hobby. I have become very concerned by recent legal actions by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) and the DVD CCA (DVD Copy Control Association). In December 1999 the DVD CCA filed for a preliminary injunction that was heard January 18 against numerous web sites that feature a program called DeCSS to force them to remove the program, source code, and any materials dealing with the CSS encryption algorithm. The judge decided January 21 to grant the DVD CCA the preliminary injunction against 500+ web site operators and online news sources. On January 14, 2000, the MPAA filed suit against three individuals under the "Digital Millennium Copyright Act" stating that the only possible use of DeCSS and the DVD decryption information is to pirate DVD disks. The judge heard the case granted a preliminary injunction January 20 against the website owners.

The best analogy I can come up with is if book publishers printed books in such a way that they could only be read under a special light that was only manufactured by certain companies that had promised to keep the book publishers secret of how to make the special light to prevent people from possibly making xeroxes of them. Then say John Doe takes apart one of the special lights that he had bought and discovered that you could read their book by just putting red cellophane over a normal light. John Doe then publishes this discovery in his newsletter and the information gets republished in other magazines, newspapers and newsletters.

The book publishers discover a month later that John Doe has published their secret and the worry that the information could be used to make it possible to xerox whole copies of books (never mind that the book is cheaper to buy than the copy). So they file a lawsuit against John Doe, his newsletter, and against every other newspaper, magazine or newsletter that reprinted John's article or mentioned other publications that had printed John Doe's article. The law suit requires all defendants to recall articles dealing with John Doe's discovery or face fines of $2500 for each copy that contained the information.

Is this fair to John Doe and the people that republished John Doe's work? Is it fair to the general public since John Doe's discovery means that people could read the books they purchased without buying expensive special light bulbs, or a third party could make a less expensive version of the light bulb?

This is the situation facing hundreds of individuals and website operators right now, and less directly effects tens of thousands of users and software developers. The primary use of the DVD decryption information is to allow access to and play the video stored on DVD disks that people have purchased on systems they own that are other than Windows or Macintosh. I feel it's unjust and infringes on my right to "fair use" of the DVDs I've purchased to make me use only DVD players that are sanctioned by the Motion Picture Association, and to indicate that I'm irreparably harming the Motion Picture Industry if I provide information on how DVDs work or links to DVD information.

The judge heard the case granted a preliminary injunction January 20 against the website owners.

The best analogy I can come up with is if book publishers printed books in such a way that they could only be read under a special light that was only manufactured by certain companies that had promised to keep the book publishers secret of how to make the special light to prevent people from possibly making xeroxes of them. Then say John Doe takes apart one of the special lights that he had bought and discovered that you could read their book by just putting red cellophane over a normal light. John Doe then publishes this discovery in his newsletter and the information gets republished in other magazines, newspapers and newsletters.

The book publishers discover a month later that John Doe has published their secret and the worry that the information could be used to make it possible to xerox whole copies of books (never mind that the book is cheaper to buy than the copy). So they file a lawsuit against John Doe, his newsletter, and against every other newspaper, magazine or newsletter that reprinted John's article or mentioned other publications that had printed John Doe's article. The suit requires all defendants to recall articles dealing with John Doe's discovery or face fines of $2500 for each copy that contained the information.

Is this fair to John Doe and the people that republished John Doe's work? Is it fair to the general public since John Doe's discovery means that people could read the books they purchased without buying expensive special light bulbs, or a third party could make a less expensive version of the light bulb?

This is the situation facing hundreds of individuals and website operators right now, and less directly effects tens of thousands of users and software developers. The primary use of the DVD decryption information is to allow access to and play the video stored on DVD disks that people have purchased on systems they own that are other than Windows or Macintosh. I feel it's unjust and infringes on my right to "fair use" of the DVDs I've purchased to make me use only DVD players that are sanctioned by the Motion Picture Association, and to indicate that I'm irreparably harming the Motion Picture Industry if I provide information on how DVDs work or links to DVD information.

Here is a diagram I just made of how I constructed my own rack-mounting enclosure from cheap and readily available components: the most expensive components were the telescopic drawer rails. The drawer rails are mounted to the enclosure and then the runners are simply screwed to the side of the machine chassis; if you then leave the lids off the machines, you can easily pull a machine out for maintenance.

WARNING: you must either counterbalance or attach this assembly or it will tip - over when you pull out a chassis!

It's possible to use sort of WMs in Windows. You can install an alternative shell which is started instead of the MS GUI. Just change the EXPLORE keyword in win.ini (?) to some executable. There are clones for enlightenment and so around.
