Re:"mainstay of our democratic society"
That reinforces my point that the news media/journalism is completely disconnected from reality.
It isn't. It's divorced from its alleged mission of providing news on reality, but it seeks to create reality by providing misleading commentary, or outright lies.
Dissemination of facts is no longer about vetting and varifying information, it's about how many SJW's you can get to follow your posts and give you likes.
Acronym "SJW" used, dickhead detected.
There are no 'traditional safeguards' that work on the 'reddit' format.
There are no 'traditional safeguards' that work on the 'newspaper' (etc. etc.) format. That's now how news fucking works. At least, not in America; in this country, you can call yourself a news organization without making any attempt whatsoever to be factual, or even being willfully disingenuous. Furthermore, Bill Clinton helped eliminate the other major protection we once had, namely that one entity could not own all of the media outlets in one market. So if you "think" that there is some protection from "news" outlets spreading lies in America, you're not thinking. At best, you're hopelessly ignorant.
That's not how the mob fucking works.
And, you're also hopelessly out of touch. Memes are continually and frequently discredited for inaccuracy... by the mob.

The same way that Western goods make their way to any country under export control, through intermediaries.
Coke can't sell to North Korea. Coke however can be sold (or made) in China and then gets shipped across the line to North Korea.
Is it really hard to imagine that Syria or Iran might be able to download from an intermediary country that might have a mirror of the distribution? Or had someone travel to such a country to download it? Or just went through a VPN or proxy? Or...

surely someones considered this.
1. new currency emerges, becomes significant
2. reigning system of currency/government considers it a threat.
3. coordinated attacks on the stock exchange
4. bankruptcy, uncertainty, disappearance
5. 'Maybe X currency isnt so bad after all!"
the fact stands that shifting major trade away from the dollar is dangerous, but the bitcoin midel would be catastrophic. its a world where international financial sanctions cant work, and in which America would need to do more than just show up to security council meetings in the UN for a rubber-stamp vote against $evil_dictator. Iraq and Iran serve as real-world examples of this in action. both countries have in the past attempted to shift oil trade away from the dollar. Nothing says monetary supremacy like de-stabilizing the competitions government.

Re:So long, farewell...
Even if that is true (which it's not- there's nothing stopping a corporation from growing larger if it has enough resources) Big Corps would still continue existing after you get rid of Big Government. They're not going to magically vanish just because one country goes up in smoke.
And if you had any sense you'd realize it's far easier for a big corporation to bully a small government or work with a corrupt small government. They would be very happy to take over or use the government as its army. There would be very little that a small government can do to stop it if no big government/organization with a larger military steps in to help.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_East_India_Company
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_India_Company#Military_expansionThe Dutch East India Company (VOC) was also arguably the first megacorporation, possessing quasi-governmental powers, including the ability to wage war, imprison and execute convicts,[4] negotiate treaties, coin money, and establish colonies.[5]

The only thing stopping them from doing worse stuff are big governments with bigger "guns".

Re:Just another reason...This is the reason why FOX news should not be trusted, http://www.projectcensored.org/top-stories/articles/11-the-media-can-legally-lie/
specificallyDuring their appeal, FOX asserted that there are no written rules against distorting news in the media. They argued that, under the First Amendment, broadcasters have the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on public airwaves. Fox attorneys did not dispute Akre’s claim that they pressured her to broadcast a false story, they simply maintained that it was their right to do so.
(my emphasis) So really should you trust ANY news from this media empire?

-
Re:Here's an idea.
We've been trying to get them to chage the law for 40 years. Without victimless activities being illegal you don't need secret police.
-
Re:Viewpoint from an American in China
Censorship in an absolute sense isn't generally how it's done - it's more of a statistical, dynamic way of working. Some stories are marginalized, others are pushed. The science and art of public opinion manipulation has so many techniques that it would require several books to describe. Virtually anything or anyone that is on the national news is there for the purpose of influencing the public, and this is coordinated by a fairly small number of informally associated people. Go to the Project Censored Top 25 list for some of the marginalized stories.
-
Re:kind of like the police
If Fox News just lied they would be out of business rather quickly.
Given Fox's demographic it's unlikely to cause them any grief commercially and of course the courts have already decided that lying is not a problem for them legally speaking.
-
Re:"Illegal Information"?
In the US it is against the law to spread false information about people and events..
Unless you're a media organization like Fox News, in which case it's entirely legal.
-
Re:The other side of the coin
It's not like you have to look to the past to find examples:
Mercenary Armies in Service to Global Corporations:In Indonesia, a U.S. company, Freeport McMoram, has been accused of dumping more than 110,000 tons of mining waste into local rivers every day. When the Indonesian populace protested the devastation to its land, Indonesian troops, hired to protect Freeport McMoram, moved in and cracked down on the protesters. Human rights groups estimate that the army has killed nearly 2,000 people in the region in the two decades the company has been in residence.
In general, what I find most tedious about these discussions is that a lot of the participants seem to want to hit upon some simple rule, "Government is always evil," "Corporations are always evil," or "Any organization of any kind is always evil," as if they can find such a simple rule, apply it in all cases, and never have to trouble with thinking again, much less looking at historical trends and internal conflicts, and making tactical and strategic assessments of what's going on in a given context.
-
Re:oh gee. then they are fools.
Yeah, why have journalists or media at all, they've never worked to uncover secrets or to publish the words of whistle blowers, there's obviously no reason to ever have news agencies now or ever again.
For entretainment purposes, like "public clowns"? Nothing wrong with it, as long as you can keep in mind that they are no more than that.
Ah, yes, I'd still appreciate if they can be sincere and admit it from the begining and spare my time/neurons to derive it from their behavior.
-
Re:Anonymous releases are possible
You need to get media attention to make a splash. The wingers who did the whole ground zero mosque thing had their material out for months with no media interest.
You nailed the heart of a large part of the problem... A lot of scandals are just ignored by all but some obscure media outlets. Just look at some of the stories on Project Censored (and the fact that they even exist). It really does show information does not have to be hidden to be unknown to the world... And some of the regular media can continue to ignore or distort the truth indefinitely, research like this well known 2003 report showing Fox information distortion was a real eye opener to me...
-
Oh yeah!?
Yeah, well...I bet it'd, like...fall on some birds and make a lot of noise!
(for the record I also support nuclear, but I'll save my jokes for now).
-
Yup, it's legal
Yes, it's completely legal in the US. For better or worse, the media can legally lie.
Moreover, Americans have a great history of accusing presidents of mass murder with no factual basis whatsoever, yet I've never heard of any one of them being arrested for speaking their views.
-
More of the same.
Sadly, it doesn't really matter what the truth is to people that are determined not to believe it. How well documented are atrocities like Operation Keelhaul or the USA's active involvement in the genocide of the people of East Timor in the 70s? Very. Many people have taken it upon themselves, at great risk to their own safety, to bring things like that to the attention of the public at large... most of the time it does no good whatsoever.
For every 1 dedicated researcher out there, there is a countless myriad of parrots that simply read off the carefully prepared messages their teleprompter tells them to, to the slews of average citizens that are more concerned with bickering over which news channel is actually presenting unbiased raw facts.
When you bother to alert said average citizens that no major news outlet is trustworthy because all major news outlets agreed with one another in 2005 that they should be allowed to lie on public airwaves, legally*, you get labeled as a conspiracy theorist.

Author: Al KrebsFaculty Evaluator: Liz Burch, Ph.D.
Student Researcher: Sara BrunnerIn February 2003, a Florida Court of Appeals unanimously agreed with an assertion by FOX News that there is no rule against distorting or falsifying the news in the United States.
By all rights, Beck - as an employee of Fox who was accusing somebody else of make false statements - should have been physically tossed from the courtroom (which, if justice was to be served, should have been on the 5th or higher floor).
IANAL, of course - but I would be remiss if I did not mention that I look upon anything that Fox says with a certain skepticism.
-
Re:Their site...
It's a little more in depth then that but if your narrow it down, you recalled correctly- except that the ability to lie wasn't given, protection from whistle blower lawsuits is what was given.
Basically, to resolve the possibility of litigation, Fox executives ordered statements from Monsanto to be included in a reporting about Bovine Growth Hormone at a local florida affiliate. The reporters claimed the statements to be false and misleading and initially refused to include them in the report. The two reporters were terminated after threatening to report Fox's actions to the FCC so they filed a wrongful termination lawsuit under the Florida whistle blower protection laws.
The court actually ruled that misrepresenting the truth or a lie didn't rise to the levels needed for the whistle blower protection to kick (a violation of a law) in so the two reporters didn't have standing for the suit. It didn't give Fox news Carte Blanche in their reporting as they are still held by other standards including libel and FCC regulations. But it did reinforce their editorial control over the protections against people working for them. The effect can be distorted to include the ability to lie in news reporting but that would be a misstatement in the least.
Again, the argument wasn't that they can lie, it was that lieing didn't trip the whistle blower protections the reporters claimed to have had. Five other major news operators in the area filed amicus briefs on Fox's behalf over this too. This is also only a Florida regulation under Florida laws in a Florida court. It doesn't automagically apply in other states or nation wide nor does it make it legal for Fox to lie. It only makes it legal to fire reporters in Florida who refuse to lie. Consumer protections as well as libel and other laws still apply.

Re:Beauty of Capitalism
while i've never heard of E'Prime Aerospace, but if you want to look at an example of privatization hurting society, then look up info on water privatization in El Salvador. i first read about this issue about 5-6 years ago (when the water supply was first privatized), but the problem doesn't seem to have gotten any better over the years.
other examples of this include India, where the World Bank is also pushing the government to privatize Delhi's water supply, as well as Pakistan, where the WTO and other IFIs are pushing for privatization of health care against the protest of doctors and other medical professionals. Pakistanis have also recently been swindled by foreign investors when Pakistan Steel Mill was privatized at far below the market price. likewise, there is strong public opposition against the privatization of Pakistan's Oil & Gas Development Company. however, all of this is just the latest episode in a string corrupt privatization dealings by the Pakistani dictator which has cost the Pakistani people over $23.8 billion in national income and domestic resources.
another example of the harm of privatization can be seen in post-soviet Russia, where the privatization of national assets have made a handful of people disgustingly rich while the rest of society bears the cost of this ransacking of public infrastructure and lack of industry regulation.
it just seems ridiculous to me that public assets should be auctioned off to the rich at 1/1000th their market value while public institutions like schools, hospitals, transportation infrastructure, etc. remain chronically underfunded. and certain things like the water supply and other public utilities serve a more important purpose than creating lucrative profits for transnational conglomerates, especially in countries where people can barely afford to eat.

H1B abuses have been well know for many years
So many articles are coming out about the newly discovered h1b abuses, that you might think that, because everybody finally knows about the abuses, the problems will be fixed.
Sorry folks, but the abuses have been well know for nearly a decade.

Re:stupidThe fault of those that forced that situation: The colonial powers. And how long does this fault last for? At least as long as they keep it up.
Today, Africa is the most war-torn continent in the world. Over the past fifteen years, thirty-two of the fifty-three African countries experienced violent conflict. During the cold war years (1950-1989), the U.S. sent $1.5 billion in arms and training to Africa thus setting the stage for the current round of conflicts. From 1991-1995 the U.S. increased the amount of weapons and other military assistance to fifty of the total fifty-three African countries. Over the years these U.S. funded wars have been responsible for the deaths of millions of Africans, and the subsequent displacement, disease, and starvation of many millions more.
In June of 2002, leaders from the eight most powerful countries in the world (the G8) met to form a New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) as an "anti-poverty" campaign. One glaring omission, however, is the consultation and representation of the African nations. Not one of the eight leaders was from Africa. The danger of the NEPAD proposal is that it fails to protect Africa from exploitation of its resources. NEPAD is akin to Plan Columbia in its attempt to employ Western development techniques to provide economic opportunities for international investment. Welcomed by the G8 nations, this development plan reads like a mad dash to grab up as much of Africa's remaining resources as possible. -

genocide
the flippant nature of the conversation so far kind of disgusts me. I worked for some of these campaigns in West Virginia a couple summers ago, and what's going on down there is terrifying and, in my mind, evil.
The term isn't strip mining. This is worse. They call it Mountaintop Removal Mining, although really they destroy entire mountain ranges, then shovel the rubble into what were valleys, destroying thousands of miles of freshwater creeks. The work takes a crew of no more than a couple dozen, whereas traditional "deep" mining needs hundreds, so the jobs that the Appalachian hill culture depends on have disappeared along with drinking water, wildlife habitat, and resident's health. The destruction is complete. The mountains, their ecosystems, and the cultures they support will never return. Dirty King Coal, meanwhile, reaps unprecedented profits.
Remember, energy from coal is anything but clean. Coal plants push massive amounts of carbon into the atmosphere, accelerating the mass extinction we all are witness to.
What's happening in Apallachia, one of Project Censored's 25 most censored stories of 2005, is a crime against humanity and the planet. I applaud Google for helping to bring attention to it. If any of you feel like helping in this struggle, www.climateaction.net/mjsb is a good place to start. -
