OK, I'm imagining...
Imagine ALL off the developers around the world working on an X server replacement.
Hmm, like in the mythical man-month, where each time you add a developer you reduce quality, introduce stress, and increase delay?
OK, I'm squinching my eyes... imagining... AAAAAHHHH! AGGGHGGHHH!!!!!!! Make it stop!!!!

Re:Success of web comics
So? A movie deal isn't every cartoonist's goal. Many great comics (especially comic strips) would make terrible movies. There are other ways to profit-- like merchandise and publishing, even selling original art.
BTW there are quite a few cartoonists who work in print-- typically "alternative weeklies" like the New York Press, or with indie comics publishers like Fantagraphics-- but also make their strips and archives available on the web. I wouldn't call them "webcomics" in the Penny Arcade mold but these guys have seen that distributing their work over the intraweb as well as whatever publishing opportunities come along, is a good way of reaching fans... Some of my favorites (catering to my weird tastes, of course:)

truth is a slippery chimera
I thought you were going to say:
"But it's not always right. And where it's not right, my assertion is."
Now THAT would be great ;) At least, we would always know the truth :P
Alas, we don't get to always know the truth.

This reminds me of the work suits the First Hundred used in Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy
Not quite complete spacesuits, but enough to keep you alive and working while on the surface of the red planet. They included a lattice of warming wires beneath a flexible exterior.

Re:My favorites
Jerkcity and Pokey are great
:-)
I guess Jerkcity isn't for everyone, with the constant gay jokes et al, but Pokey's absurde humor is a laugh-o-rama
if you like comics that are a bit offensive or weird, you may like Red Meat -
Re:Why Black and White?
Since when has amazing art been required for a comic strip? Gary Larson himself admits that his art is weak, and nobody can argue that The Far Side has not been one of the best comic strips of the last few decades.
And as far as online strips go, I think that simple, black & white art really fits some strips out there. The dry humor styles of Red Meat and Random Axe of Kindness actually benefit from art that is similarly simple, IMHO. -

I still prefer redmeat.
-
oh yeah
I've had a couple different ones - Galactic Overlord, Alpha Primate, and so on - but the one that most people that I've worked for recenly know me for (and the one that I've used at the last three or so jobs) is "Gun-Toting Psycho". (Inspired in part by a Red Meat comic strip.)
Well, time goes by, and things happen, and eventually my title and I got a mention in a front-page New York Times story about this very subject. (Can't find a URL right now, but it was about six or seven months ago.) Anyway, the higher-up types at The Company didn't take too kindly to me talking to the press without official sanction, and people were not happy all around.
I wound up leaving that job shortly thereafter, but I've still got my Gun-Toting Psycho name plate, and a whole stack of business cards... -
No Red Meat?
I can't believe there's not one mention of Red Meat anywhere. One of the funniest I've found online....twisted sense of humor required.

LOPOW
For the not-so-faint-of-heart, keenspot has a great "List Of Potentially Offensive Webcomics". Classics such as SpaceMoose, and Celebrity Car Wash figure prominently. Also contains links to the newer low brow comics on the web.
On a completely different note, here are my personal faves: Penny Arcade, Sluggy Freelance, Exploitation Now!, MegaTokyo, Red Meat, HotenDotey, and Jerk City.
I am sure I forgot a couple of my regulars, but these are the major ones.

Don't forget

Librarian issues
I'm the son of a librarian, and I know firsthand that they are trying to stop this in any way they can... but should that not work, we're screwed, because I can research virtually nothing for my anatomy course... unfortunately, they get their internet connection through the local school, who has some kinda filtering software up... it's really screwed up, you can't go to half the 3rd party candidates' websites, 2600, or even the Onion. It's really annoying, because I got one of the librarians hooked on red meat, and now we can't access it!

Help Test Our New Server! Posted by CmdrTaco on Mon August 30, 12:51 PM EDT

So here it is: A mirror of Slashdot (as of a week or so ago). It exists now for testing: So feel free to post comments and help test the new load balancer. For the curious, the new system has 3 http machines (P2s) and one mysql box (a dual P2) with a load balancer trying to keep everyone all equally busy. And its about time: the old setup has been really stressed out trying to keep up with everyone. Anyway, don't get to attached to any of your comments here, when we're satisfied that the new setup is stable, I'm gonna mirror over Slashdot and make the final switcheroo.( Read More... | 335 of 335 comments )

Re:Who cares?
Am I the only person in the world that finds no humor in this comic strip? I have never read a strip that even made me smile.
I'm with you
I remember from a few years back, a critic slagged off Ben Elton's stand-up comedy as being only funny to sycophantic lefties who'll laugh at the mere mention of Margaret Thatcher. I think they were wrong. But they'd be right if they had said that User Friendly is only funny to sycophantic Linux-heads who'll laugh at the mere mention of Microsoft.
Come on, it's just not that funny! If it wasn't aligned to your political beliefs, none of you would glance at a second strip!
(and the artwork is terrible, too)
(and and, for whoever said "at last a web comic is getting the respect of a publishing deal", Red Meat has two volumes in print, and is 100x funnier to boot!
