Re:Been there, done that
We need some open source movie making
You should check out machinima, the making of movies using 3D game engines. You can have actors, costumes, vehicles, sets, lighting, and special effects for free. Most of it so far has been pretty lame, but Red vs. Blue, made with the Halo engine, is hysterically funny and has become pretty successful. (Season 2 debuts at Lincoln Center soon.)
It's not "open source" exactly, but it does put a lot of tools in the hands of would-be indie filmmakers.
-
Re:I have prior art on that name!
Hrm... Not enough Red Vs Blue fans on Slashdot as I would've guessed despite all the machinima stories.
-
Re:YES!
Here, let me email you Super Breakout!
I really like "that puzzle game. That's a great game. Sure, I beat it, but it's still fun." -
Trust Me.
Bios changes to "trustworthy computing" make me just as scared as when my wife and I went car shopping at Gan Chev Olds and they said "Trust Me. This is a great deal!". Boy did I ever get screwed on that "deal". *sigh*
Since when does it make sense to switch the onus for security to hardware?
Oh I knew it was time to buy a Mac! With Doom 3 being fully supported on Mac on launch, it's going to be hard for people to criticize Mac for a lack of games. As soon as Uncle Sam rubs his greedy hands together, to try and get all our secrets, it's time for a switch, IMHO. I'm developing my open source Doom 3 project on a Mac, so I'll be playing on one too. Maybe once Doom 3 is on Mac, the next generation of Id-engine-spinoffs will make for a slaughterhouse of new games for Mac, too! -
For example...
The Blood Gulch Chronicles by Red vs Blue is machinima.
-
Re:Video Game animation
That's not really Machinima, that's mostly cartoons/video editing done a computer. What she's referring to is videos made entirely within a pre-existing 3d environment like a video game engine. The acting is similar to traditional movies in that there are takes and people can mess it up, it's not being meticulously animated.
hence: Red vs. Blue -
You're kidding, right???
A MAC GAMER???
We must really be in the Matrix...
Dude, go watch this "Mac Gamer" clip on Red vs Blue. It should pretty much explain everything. Seriously. :)
http://www.redvsblue.com/appleswitch.shtml
Aside from that, can you explain to me what's up with the "1-button only" thing?
It is a big pain gaming-wise, you know.
Cheers. Peace out.

RvB FAQs
This seems like a good time to mention the Red vs Blue FAQs. There fairly easy to read for a FAQ. I just wish the Linux FAQs were that amusing!
-
Just to inform...
For those who don't know, machinima is the process of creating movies using a video game engine.
Red vs Blue has created some hilarious work using the Halo engine. The "Blood Gulch Chronicles" are about a bunch of dopey marines stuck in the bottom of a dry creek bed. They live, they love, they laugh, they blow stuff up.
Check out the trailer.

Re:I'm still dying for...
Teleportation would be cool yeah, and you wouldn't even have to worry if the pizza was cold, just scramble it a little during sending and it'll come out piping hot... or begging you to kill it.
The only real problem I see it the box being covered with black stuff (go here if that made no sense). -
Re:Marketing...Watch a good counterstrike match. If you're open minded, search for the videos:
You are talking about highlight films. Somebody who hates watching baseball will still find it entertaining to watch movie of that Randy Johnson fastball that hit that dove that's been floating around the web for a few years. That doesn't mean that they would enjoy sitting through a nine-inning Diamondbacks game.
BTW: "Machinima" is supposed to refer to animated features made with game engines and tool boxes, like this stuff, not films of "professional" game-players in competition.

Re:Prison rape
This kid is eighteen. He did something that pissed off a lot of the world (including most of the people reading slashdot). But, legally or not, he's a damn kid. If you're older than eighteen, how many asswitted things did you do when you were that age? Would you have ever thought that the idea of you getting raped for any of them was acceptable?
Amen. As Church would say:
"You are a god damn idiot. I'd like to prove this mathematically if I may. Take your current age. Now subtract ten years from it. Were you smart back then? Of course you weren't, you were a god damn idiot! Fact of the matter is, you're just as big an idiot today, it's just going to take you ten more years to realize it."

Remember, though they also said (in the FAQ
:
Q: Why do you hate Macs?
A: We don't hate Macs, the game companies do. Get it?
Q: No.
A: You would fit in on our forums. No one there gets anything either. -

Or as the guys from redvsblue put it here:
The confusing thing about PCs is just that you go to the store, and there is just so many games... everywhere you look! While on the Mac, its just six. And you know which ones are good, 'cause you have already played them on the PC like five or six years ago.

Re:More to the point
It's like all the people who want a Mac for gaming. I mean, there's tons of great games on the Mac. Like Warcraft 3. And... Warcraft 3. And the little apple puzzle thingy...... photoshop?
If you're going to more or less directly quote the "Apple Switch" piss-take video on Red vs Blue then at least be honest about it ;) -
Switch - Mac gamer's account
Check out this cool Switch parody by the Red vs. Blue guys.

There are a lot of great games on the Mac. Like Warcraft 3... mmm... that, that puzzle game with the Apple logo. That's a great game! I beat it, but it's still fun.
The confusing thing about PCs is just you go to the store and there's just so many games. And everywhere you look... But on the Mac there's just six. And you know which ones are good, because you already played them all on the PC like five or six years ago. On the Mac I can play plenty of great games that you just can't find on the PC now. Like Zork, Breakout... Super Breakout... Photoshop (in a very low voice).
Another great thing about the Mac is upgrades. On the PC you have to open up the case, swap up your videocard, change jumpers. On the Mac when it's time to upgrade you just pick it up, throw it away and go buy another one. Now, that's convenience.

HALO. No I know you are thinkin wtf are you talkin about buddy it wasn't particularly great. Well thats because I'm talking about the after the ending ending aka Red Vs Blue. It's ok I forgive you for doubting me.

Mac Gaming
At least you have the option of running WineX for unported games. I'm sure there are currently more Mac desktop machines out there than Linux desktop machines, and look how few ports there are to the Mac. And with a few exceptions, most games that are ported take at least a year (or even longer). If the Linux gamer's market is smaller, how do you expect companies to make a business case for porting to Linux? They're not until Linux becomes more prevalent on the desktop side.
And now, for fun's sake, take a look at RVB Apple Switch -
strange...
It is just me or did the soundtrack seem, well, japanese? The movie in general is just flat-out weird. Not quite funny. Just weird.
I'm not a big fan of Halo myself. I've never played it. None of my friends have. There's just not that sense of greatness about the game that makes me feel like I really need to give a crap about it. But something is worth noting about the game; and that's the sudden deluge of movies circulating the internet that were recorded using the game. This is probably due in part to the game's amazing graphical capability, of which the X-Box itself is very likely playing a key role in, but perhaps also due in part to something easily facilitating video recording? I read something awhile back (probably one of the OpenGL 2.0 white papers about pixel pack/unpack from 3D Labs, maybe not, my brain's starting to fall asleep right now) that seemed to underline the fact that you can send a lot of data to a video card and have it be all accelerated and fast and all, but it's not quite as easy to send it back into memory for, say, recording high-quality 3D rendered movies in real-time. That all we'd need is some kind of bus or compression scheme to get the stuff back into main memory from the video card and all of a sudden you'd have this massive flood of 3D-rendered indie movies.
That said - it is quite likely that this, and the others like it (if you haven't already, check out Red vs. Blue and see what I'm talking about here), is the tip of a very big iceberg. -

that would be cool...
...because the blue team would fight the red team for total domination. But can we fight over something cooler than blood gulch? I just hope that Church wouldn't have to die this time.
-
What the....
...how can you mention game engine videos and leave out Red vs Blue and the Blood Gulch Chronicles.
Don't get me wrong. Randy Glass is the godfather of Halo movies, but Red vs Blue took it to an entirely new level. Heck, those guys were even invited to go to the conference and made a special video for it. This is just blasphemous. -
Re:Works for me
Don't worry about it... If it's released in 2005, you'll wait until about 2010 at the earliest to get it on your mac.
Ever heard of a "mac gamer"? Neither have we. -
Re:BitTorrent is a valid technology
That's only once or twice, because there just isn't that much legally distributable material that can reach the required "critical mass" for BitTorrent to be effective and necessary.
*cough* Red Versus Blue *cough*
It's hilarious machinima. Try it. -
Red vs. Blue
I can't believe that no one has talked about the success of red vs. blue. It would seem to be machinima (Halo) and it is hilarious and original. Although is does not seem to diverge very much from the game I could easily see the concept taken in many directions from what they have done. I think that it is an emerging field.
-
Re:Not a surprise
Not to mention that Red vs Blue, based on Halo, is the bomb ( http://www.dpk.net/download/rvb/ - don't have episode 2 yet)
-
Don't forget "Red vs. Blue"
The Blood Gulch Chronicles are a (IMO) very funny series of movies made entirely from in-game footage from Halo with the audio dubbed over. (As a bonus, BitTorrent links are available from the web site for recent episodes.) This is the first I've heard of Machinima, but it sounds like a similar approach using a different genre.

Copyright/licensing issues?
After seeing stuff like Red Vs. Blue, I've wondered whether this technically violates copyrights. The models, textures, etc. were created by people other than the ones doing the posing, scripting, etc. Also (I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this one already, but I'll ask in case anyone knows for sure), can you use any game/rendering engine to do things like this with your own models/textures/sounds, or are you technically supposed to license the engine as well?
I'm really interested in these questions because I think this is a great way for people who want to tell stories but who don't have the resources to use other media to get their material out there, and I hope we see more of it in the future. -
Red Vs. Blue
Along the same lines is the Red Vs. Blue series availible at http://www.redvsblue.com/
They are working on the Blood Gulch story right now, and have about half of it up for d/l (using Bittorrent) -
Re:No
Unless Apple does someting drastic with their product (and everything else being relatively the same), e.g. offer it on x86, open-source much of it, etc. I don't see how Apple's market share changing significantly.
Quite a good point. Apple's blessing and curse is that its profits are tied to hardware. This is a blessing as they have an incredibly beautiful OS that causes windows and *nix users to go out and buy one. I have an ex-windows-now-Linux/BSD PC at home and code on a G3 with 3 monitors at work (3840x1024 pixels (-: ). I must say that I vastly prefer OSX. Almost everything I have running on my Linux box I can run on OS X. Everything else, I install on the linux box, then pipe X through ssh to X11 on OSX. The apps run off of the powerful x86 box, but apear on my Mac. Wonderful!
Their tie to their beautiful-if-slow hardware is also Apple's Achilles' heel. Since most people can't afford $2,000 for a new computer (or see it as a waste of money), OS X will never have the market share nessisary to get application developers to code natively for the OS. Luckily, with OS X you can run most any *nix app with the CLI or X11, so this is less of a problem, but it is still the thing that is holding back Apple the most. For instance, check out RedVsBlue's Apple Switch parody -- quite funny and true. The total, utter void of wicked-cool 3D games for the Mac is really crap. However, unless they get --or have the potential for-- significant market share no one is going to waste time writing apps for them.
Hopefully, OS X's ability to run most *nix apps and X11 will enable it to ride along on the wave created by Linux and keep its niche market without too much loss. While many of Apple's practices are not all that friendly (their monitor and speaker plugs, for instance), homoganization of computing is definately a bad thing and Apple does have a place. Horay for a less-Micro$haft future!

Advantages of a Mac...
