Re:technophobes is a misnomer...
According to dictionary.com,
technophobe = Fear of or aversion to technology, especially computers and high technology
Aren't people who write with pens actually Luddites? -
"analog"?
Definition of analog: "Of, relating to, or being a device in which data are represented by continuously variable, measurable, physical quantities, such as length, width, voltage, or pressure."
I submit that just because a watch has moving hands does not make it analog. Many moving-hand type watches keep time by using quartz crystals. Guess what? They count the number of vibrations of the crystal and tick one second every 32768 oscillations. Since they count, they are, by definition, digital.
True analog watches are ones that you usually wind up every day, the ones that have springs and weights inside to oscillate naturally every second, without any circuits to count the number of oscillations.
It is (at least) theoretically possible to hook up an LCD to a spring-weight mechanism; that would still be analog. But anything with quartz crystals and 15 half-adder circuits must necessarily be digital. -
It's a language problem
Of course we all take pleasure out of SCO's misery. Why should we hide it? They're a bunch of rotten cock-smokers (the litigious bastards campaign was a success, it's time to expand it), and we all hate the bastards. I think it's time the English-speaking world get a concept of what Germans call Schadenfreude, because you, like everyone else, are perfectly capable of having this emotion.
The lack of a word for it seems to make some of you incapable of recognizing this. Asking everyone to hide their "malicious satisfaction of SCO's misfortunes" is about the same as asking people to pretend they didn't do it, even if they didn't do it anyway.
I say this about the SCO website situation: It serves them right, but I'm not going to take the blame for it. Hell, I haven't even had the virus sent to me yet. -

Hey, maybe you should read ALL the definitions of the word athlete before you over impress everyone with your, what is that, stupidity?

3. One fitted for, or skilled in, intellectual contests; as, athletes of debate.
So, yes, smartass; as dumb as it sounds, Gary Kasparov is a "Mind Athlete".
By the way, how the hell did you manage to spell athlete correctly the first them, but then incorrectly as athelete?

Re:throw new LanguageDilutionException();
Mind athletes?? The last time I checked, an Athlete is someone who required good physical attributes in order to be sucessful. The term "Mind Athlete" makes no sense whatsoever.
You might want to consider your own references before calling a definition incorrect:
3. One fitted for, or skilled in, intellectual contests; as, athletes of debate. -
throw new LanguageDilutionException();
demanding the mind athletes be treated with the same respect as physical athletes.

Lets call these people what they are...gamers. Being a gamer is nothing to be ashamed of, and I would love to see more professional gaming, and more pro gamers. This goes for both the electronic and "pencil and paper" variety.
But come on people, is Gary Kasparov a "Mind Athelete"? Maybe gatorade can come out with a new marketing campaign:
"When you're trying to decide between bishop to R3 or a queen gambit, your body depletes essential minerals and nutrients..." -

WTF is a "naturalized monopoly"?!?
I beleive the phrase you're looking for is "natural monopoly". You're insistence on the use of the term "naturalized" makes me sincerely doubt your credentials as an expert at economics, since I don't think most monopolies are "introduced from another region and persisting without cultivation" or "planted so as to give an effect of wild growth".

how appropriate..."Why should CBS want to bring in unneeded controversy into the Super Bowl that would distract from the game?"
yeah, i mean its not like the only reason that sports exsists is to distract the general population from politics or important social issues.
"Lets take sports. Thats another crucial example of the indoctronation system in my view. For one thing because it offers people somethign to pay attention to, thats of no importance. It keeps them from worrying about things that matter to their lives that they might have some idea about doing something about.
And infact its striking to see the intelligence used by ordinary people in sports. I mean you listen to radio stations and people call in. They have the most exotic information, understanding about all kinds of arcane issues. ... I remember in highschool, i suddenly asked myself, why do I care if my team wins the football game? I mean, I dont know anybody on the team, nothing to do with me, i mean why am i cheering for my team?, it doesnt make sense.
But the point is it does make sense. Its a way of building up irrational attitudes of submission to athority. And you know, group cohesion behind leadership elements. Infact its training in irrational jingoism.
I think if you look closely at these things, they do have functions. Thats why money is speant supporting them, creating a base for them, advertising them and so on."
-- Noam Chomsky -- Manufacturing Consent, The video Transcribed by me
this is what made me understand why people like watching sports, as I never have. -

Re:No No No!A receipt is something you take with you for your own records, and for your proof to other parties. Like those tidbits of paper that the IRS or your company's reimbursement desk wants to see.
I agree... common usage of a word sometimes causes problems. I'll invite you, however (and anyone else who's confused) to take a look at the defintion of the word receipt. Notice that there's no usage that says it's something you take with you?
Also you should not think of this just in the terms of the voter. The government itself needs to have a receipt of what the voters wanted. That is encoded (at least) in Florida State Law, with respect to voter intent (must be verifiable), and what Diebold machines failed to do.

There's no such things as "very unique"AAAARRRGGHHH! It drives me insane! Something is unique or it isn't. Period.
From the above link:
For many grammarians, unique is the paradigmatic absolute term, a shibboleth that distinguishes between those who understand that such a term cannot be modified by an adverb of degree or a comparative adverb and those who do not.
Emphasis mine. -
Re:Debating, not flaming...
The intended interpretation of the word "fear" in "God-fearing" is rather antiquated compared to common modern usage. Look up the word "fear" in the dictionary... it is perhaps better translated "respect":
3. Extreme reverence or awe, as toward a supreme power. -

antipodean
antipodes ( P ) Pronunciation Key (n-tp-dz)
pl.n.
1.)Any two places or regions that are on diametrically opposite sides of the earth.
2.)(used with a sing. or pl. verb) Something that is the exact opposite or contrary of another; an antipode. -
Re:How is this "graffiti"?
apparently, spraypaint on wall == graffiti
I thought the same thing when I looked at the pictures.
I suppose it's all in what you program this plotter to draw and where you set it up to draw that would make it 'graffiti'.
n. pl. graffiti (-t)
A drawing or inscription made on a wall or other surface, usually so as to be seen by the public. Often used in the plural.
From the summary, I was half-expecting this to be some robotic arm deal, but this implementation to hang it from wires on the surface of the wall seems kind of interesting.
Could you really use a system like this to tag a subway train? Probably not. -

Re:Wasted time!
naieve
The diacritic on the i in naive is not an umlaut, it is a dieresis. The standard typewriter spelling of umlauted words (add an e) is not applicable. Slashdot doesn't appear to allow the appropriate html entities (ï is just plain is edited out of my preview html) and appears to translate any non-ascii roman character down to ascii. The convention in such situations is to just drop the dieresis and spell it "naive". -

Anyway we both agree that nazism and fascism are NOT the same thing. Now that we have that out of way...
What do they have in common? Because you are so stupid I will make it easy for you. Here are the links to dictionary.com
fascism
nazism
After you read them you will see that they have a few things in common. Mainly belligerent nationalism, nationalistic expansion and of course racism.
You see now how you are a nazi and a fascist? You are racist and you advocate belligerent nationalism. You advocate controlling opposition through terror and censorship.

Bull freakin crap. The emails trick users into launching executables. What- you don't think that an executable running on a Linux machine can send 100 emails in 30 seconds to people in your kMail address book? There is no security hole being exploited, only dumb users executing untrusted code. -

Re:Hey Dan Quayle!
Like, the plural of "hero" is "heroes", and "heroe" and "heros" are both wrong
However, the plural of "gyro" (the sandwich, rhymes with "hero") is "gyros" [1]. Oddly, though, the plural of "gyro" (short for "gyroscope") is also listed as "gyros", though I would think it should be "gyroes"
When I say them out loud, I can hear a long sound like "oes" in "heroes", where I hear a more clipped "os" in "gyros" -- though maybe that's just my trying to add a Greek accent. When I say "gyroes" out loud, emphasizing the "y" with a Texas drawl, it really sounds like an "oes". And my co-workers look over the cube walls to see what form of dementia I'm currently exhibiting.
Potatoes, gyros, heroes... All this posting is making me hungry. Time for lunch. -
Re:five-seven-six?
Depends on your dialect. If you pronounce it "con-tro-ver-see-al," then you're right; if (as dictionary.com suggests) you say "con-tro-ver-shall," then the author is right.
