The problem is not computing power, it's the lack of raw data to feed the computer. There aren't enough sensors collecting data to feed the system to make an accurate calculation. Their effort should be spent on increasing the amount of data collected over the globe to have a significant number of datapoints to analyze. That's the key.

Seriously, this is such bad science as to be completely useless. The only result of this will be fear as it will surely predict doom and gloom. Like the submitter said, my weatherman can't even predict tomorrow's weather, muchless 30 years.

Years from now when computers are 1000x faster and are our overlords, we can look back at this experiment... and say thanks a lot assholes! I kid, I kid.

The part about banning thmem from computers even if not convicted is just nuts. However, as with gun crimes, convicted felons can't legally buy/use guns. That makes sense because there is no real need to use one in the first place. However, computers are a different challenge... they are somewhat necessary in todays society, especially if that's your career field. How do you tell and convicted hacker, also a programmer, that he can't use a computer? This will only get more interesting as time passes.

They could have been sued for violation of the DMCA. We don't want any weaknesses exposed by researchers in the early stages... we'd rather have them exposed maliciously after its too late!

Seeing as how Memory Spot readers must be "positioned closely" to access the data stored on the chip, wouldn't these make a better choice for passports? I think this would alleviate a lot of fears.

What I find facinating is how companies change the way they do things when they get popular. They forget what made them popular in the first place. My company is a prime example. We we extremely successful and thus bought by a huge company. The first thing they did is change the way we did things... not realizing that the reason they bought us in the first place is that we were already doing things right. Very strange indeed.

As for the video game industry, I see a trend of going back to the basics with respects to gameplay. All this push to make super realistic movie like games is just not working yet.

I always find it amusing when you have IT people developing features for Windows that really don't understand IT in the real world. Then they release something and are shocked when IT managers are furious over it. One would think MS would have a real good understanding of the IT environment and what is and is not a good idea. Good stuff :)

How far are you broadcasting in the first place? If its like 10 feet who cares? Now in good practice, whenever I travel I leave my passport in the safe at the hotel. Not really a good idea to walk around with it ;)

Could you at least put that link in your signature block instead of every post? I and others turn off signatures for a reason, and you force us to look at your signature each time you do this. You already have that listed as your website, so it already appears in the header of your post.

While I find the idea of an open source Windows facinating... is it too late? With Vista coming out soon, many new applications written will only run on Vista because of the new architecture, driver model, etc. ReactOS seems like it will be stuck in the past catering to XP applications/games while Vista goes forward. Since most people already have XP who would use this? Or will ReactOS emulate Vista? No, this is not a troll post, but a legit question.

Now I'd imagine then that the results would vary from user to user. So would this system require the "right" person then for testing and calibration? Very interesting indeed.

Exactly my point. Gameplay has slipped in priority behind graphics. I would like to see gameplay accelerate at the same pace as graphics quality.

Originally this technology was being used by religious freaks to keep their children from hearing/seeing bad thing in movies. That sounds ok, but when the intent of the movie is changed, I don't think they should be watching the movie in the first place. If you can't appreciate the movie the way it was intended, then don't watch the damn thing. However, it's supposed to be a free world and if morons want to remove the bloody scenes from Saving Private Ryan, then they should be able to. This world is beyond retarded.

I'd like to know how many /. readers predicted this a long time ago. But seriously, this just shows the troubles that MS is having maintaing the beast that is Windows. You can only sustain a rotten code base for so long until disaster strikes. And this disaster is Vista. If Microsoft is going to survive in the future they will have to innovate and restructure the way they create software.

Complain to the companies that advertise with these methods. If you see an ad for Delta airlines, write them a letter complaining. Bitching to the advertising company is useless because they don't care... they're getting paid from someone else. Now the companies advertising through them are getting paid from you... and they will listen eventually.

Also, use a router, firewall software, Antivirus, and Firefox. Haven't any issues ever.

I wouldn't necessarily call taking 2 trillion screen captures a great hack. Thats like filming the movie with a highdef camera off of your LCD and saying they left another door wide open! I'll be more impressed when some 16-year-old kid completely H4x0Rs the entire system and movies start flowing over eMule and Bitorrent. Until then, I'm not impressed.

If the media would stop magnifying everything different between blacks and white, then this crap wouldn't be perpetuated. Black, white, who gives a shit. In the real world, no amount of tips and tricks is going to make up for a bad schedule. We end up doing code reviews while are software is in verification and validation. Is that smart? No. But when you need to get features done, that takes priority. As for documentation, that always falls to the wayside as well. The truth of the matter is this. The only way to make schedule is to totally inflate your time estimates on the project. We developed a rule of taking the engineers estimates and double them. Of course we're still running a little late ;)

This shows that eBay fears Google's new service. Ebay is starting to show its age and lack of innovation. It needs competition from the likes of Google and anyone else that can challenge them. I stopped using eBay due to the high fees. Good luck Google and I hope you bring a good fight!

AMD produces a better/cheaper product. Why bother using Intel right now anyways? Intel has held the lead for so long because of marketing, not performance/quality. I'm glad to see Intel having their feet put to the fire... maybe they'll focus on quality and not marketing.

Look at lie detectors, we still don't understand those and they have proven time and time again to be faulty at best. Depending on this a sole source of information is foolish.

If you don't like their policy, just leave the school. Eventually they will see the error in their ways. This is just a growing trend and is going to get worse. Social networking sites are a rather new addition and once the hype dies down, so will stupid stories like this.

You can find RAID 5 enclosures as well.

You can also find solutions that will hold several more drives. This could be usefull for small form factor setups that people (myself included) use for pvrs. Small, reliable, cool running.

The whole point of having a computer is to free yourself from paper. So why would you take a step back and try to digitally emulate a system that is antiquated? A computer offers endless opportunities for organizing and storing data, I see this as a step back.

With all this development for FF, it makes me shed a tear for IE users. If they only knew.

I believe this was the result of propostion 71 that was passed in California last year. It allocated $3 billion over a period of ten years to fund stem cell research! Way to go California :)

I was on the phone with some engineers at MS the other day and even they admitted that they use Google. It's just better... for now.

Honestly I don't blame the spammers... they are just advertising, like the people who send junk snail mail. I do have a roblem though with the idiots who fall for these ads and drive the business. Seriously, how stupid are people. To actually fall for that Nigerian one... my God!

With the XBox 360 out and doing well and Nintendo realeasing soon with a great prices... will Sony recover from this? I just don't see any excitement around the next Playstation... all I hear is bad news.
