I feel safer already!
It's good to see such huge advances in domestic spying instead of things like stem cell research.

Hire a maid, much better results!
My wife and I though about getting one of these and then another for the vacumming. But we decided on a maid and the rest is history. We spend 0 hours/week cleaning and our house looks great. I'll highly recommend one

It's Still In Beta Folks!
Tough crowd here at Slashdot. We all know it's going to suck, but at least let them release it first before you criticize. Seriously though, it is just a beta and not the end result. They're looking for feedback to make improvements and thats a good thing.

Sounds familiar...
"...the site will be up and running within a couple of days" Hmmm, thought I heard that once when ShareReactor got raided a couple years ago.

Re:It's possible according to Yahoo
Here's a start... http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2006-05-2
2 -nsa-template_x.htmObviously, everyone wants the government to stay out of the public's provate life, but there is a big difference between listening to peoples phone calls and looking for calling patterns. I find the latter to be somewhat acceptable, but it is subject to abuse like everything else. The government is in a tough situation where people demand protection, but want to maintain their civil rights rightfully so. It's a tough task in which there is no easy solution.

It's possible according to Yahoo
I know that YAhoo has commented on this because they datamine extensively to find surfing habits on their site to better place advertisements. Obviously this is a bit different, but the technology and methodology is similar. I have no problem with computers analyzing calling patterns. There was a distinct pattern of calls that lead up to 911 and other attacks.

They were too cocky
The should have stopped taunting the MPAA, RIAA, and just about every Hollywood movie house. Those entities combined have an enormous amount of influence and power. It was just a matter of time unfortunately.

Kick ass flick and kind of amusing
I find it hillarious that the movie was portraying the future, 2019, as totally different and disturbing than the year it was made which was 1982. I guess thinking that 30+ years into the future it was possible that such a drastic change to occur. But here we are just 13 years away and LA doesn't look that bad... yet
:)Remember the predictions back in the 50s of flying cars be common-place in 2000

Stop your worrying!
Never fear, the DMCA is here to protect us from that sort of behavior. It's illegal, so I doubt criminals would even try it

WOW a Laptop!!
I love Apple and all the innovation they have brought to the arena, but it really is just a laptop. I think Apples best accomplishment is not their products, but the hype they generate and their marketing... brilliant! My hat off to you Steve.

Hahaha, that is priceless!
Look at the picture in the article. I've seen happier faces behind the counter at McDonalds. You can have those jobs India.

You mean I can't run Vista on my toaster?!?!@!@$
Come on people, Vista was not meant to be run on a wristwatch, toaster, calculator, or anything similar. The minimum requirements are on par with what any person who would want Vista in the first place would have. Seriously, if you're using a PII-350, you're just not using it for anything that would require Vista anyways. Am I nutz?

Too Bad!
Telling Google to filter those selections is rediculous! If the company doesn't like people supplying cracks/serials then go after the offender... not Google just because they no they exist. I'm tired of all this crap. Pretty soon the MPAA and RIAA will go after Google because they index illegal mp3 and movies. What the hell is wrong with this world?

OMG!
All under the watchful eye of Bill Clinton no doubt!

Doesn't matter.
With a 90% installbase and billions and billions of dollars... Microsoft isn't going anywhere. People are still addicted to their software and will keep coming back for more. They can sustain a lack of creativity for many many years.

Re:Combat piracy??
That $1 is cheap to them when compared to the actual cost of the goods. Sure it's not as cheap to them as it is to us, but $1 for a DVD vs $15 is a big difference to them aswell.
http://religiousfreaks.com/ -
Combat piracy??
Seeing as how China is the piracy capital of the world. I doubt Microsoft can do little to stop it. Having been in China, I can say that the piracy market is impressive. Every market you go to you'll find dvds, software, and everything else on the cheap. I think the going rate for DVDs was about $1 and thats a fully labeled DVD with sleeve. Windows XP was going for a few more $. Good luck Bill, you're gonna need it!

Googles problem will be their increasing size
Many companies started out fresh and lightweight like Google did. The problem is that with success comes size. Companies like Microsoft get crushed under their own weight. If history is any lesson, Google will follow suit unless they truly are that smart. Only time will tell.

Thought MS was further back.
Honestly, all MS bashing aside, why would anyone use MS over Apache? The support and knowledgebase surrounding Apache is second to none. Plus its free, but to me thats second to the quality and performance. Keep it up Apache!

This is a GOOD thing.
This is yet another reason for artists not to sign with the RIAA and its cronies. This will drive a more consumer oriented driven alternative to this crap. It's just a matter of time... som long as they keep doing stuff like this.

Guess where this is going
I'd imagine a huge opensource type project where people contribute their own models of places into this. Then eventually the entire planet will be mapped in 3D.

There are alternative stores for them.
They can shop at eMule, Bittorrent, and Gnutella. They have very reasonable prices and the largest selection available anywhere!

Now with built in firewall!!
I bet this thing filters questionable content right out of the box!

It's a threat!
How long before the US government classifies this as a "National Security Risk" and bans the use of opensource in the banking industry?

Looking at it here for work
At work we're looking into this to store critical data on out intranet which spans several states and facilites. Looks great, but only time will tell.
I seem to remember a project months ago that was going to use P2P to backup your data on other P2P users computers which to me sounds quite insane. Anyone know if this is related?
http://religiousfreaks.com/ -
This is priceless!
Since Vista will be crapware, MS is gonna try to push people to buy XP. Nice one MS.

Re:Blame it on the .com bust and hype
Not all programming is high-tech, but there are many industries where the level of required coding and design is quite sophisticated. Now I agree that many programming jobs are akin to factory work, but there is an enormous demand for talented designers/programmers in industries such as the medical field, military, Google, MS, Oracle, and the list goes on.

Blame it on the .com bust and hype
I graduated in 2000 when life was sweet for Computer Science majors. When the bubble burst, there was a false impression that computer related fields were doomed. I always found that amusing because our whole society is based on technology and will always need people to run it. Media reports and articles on websites like this didn't help either. They gave the impression that Computer Science wasgoing the way of the dinosaur when it truly was healthy.

Try that at a real company and hasta la vista!
If you try that at a real company (i.e. not a state job) and your ass is gone. Surfing for hours on the net is not acceptable anymore than talking on the phone with your girlfriend for hours. With the logic of this ruling.. wouldn't it be ok to surf porn? Because you can talk on the phone with one of those 900 numbers. Bottom line is this... a company is paying you to do a job and thats it. Now if your job is to surf the net, then I guess you're ok

Never Fear!
Just like all the old arcade games, these will be preserved by users like us. As for being available legally, I don't see any company really caring. Look at all those Mame games floating around.

Re:Misguided legislation
Ultimately parents are responsible for what their children are exposed to. The problem is many parents are lazy and want government to do that job for them. Look at other countries that have sex on commercials and show nudity... theirs no noticable negative effect. Now look at the US with all its violence on TV and that is mirrored in our society. We have an extrememly violent country and school system. That's a result of violence, not sex. Sex is healthy. Violence is not.

They forget who makes them what they are!
Without us, these stars would be working in a drive through at Taco Bell. The best to handle this is by not buying their overpriced music and not attending their shows. Their arrogant selfish people who feel that making millions isn't enough?!?! Gimme a break! I haven't bought a CD in over 10 years and have no plans to do so in the future.
http://religiousfreaks.com/ -
Misguided legislation
What is with this disturbing attitude towards sex in the US? It's just sex people and nothing more. Violence is far worse than boobies and has a more profound effect on kids. Its insane that showing people getting killed and beaten is more acceptable than sex. Sounds like the US still hasn't excaped their puritan past and that's sad.

It's not Yahoo's Job.
It isn't Yahoo's job to change the political climate in China, no more than it is Googles. Change in China will occur once the people demand it and other nations (not companies) apply pressure and lend support.

Don't they have bigger issues to worry about?
Shouldn't the FCC focus on bigger issues like boobs indiscriminately appearing on the Super Bowl. Or how about shock jocks saying naughty words on the radio. Geez, stay focused FCC!!

Just over $1B in revenue.
With a revenue of just over $1B expected this quarter, that certainly is a bite in the ass. Looks like the cost of Norton AV is going up.

Downward spiral
How long till the US goverment mandates that all data, whether from phonelines, email, searches, etc, has to be maintained on government servers for safe storage. I'm being totally serious. First they use child porn and incidents on myspace to scare people... then once they get their foot in the door, its just a matter of time. It truly is scary. Wheneve I talk of stuff like this I am deemed a conspiracy nut or something similiar.

People still use AOL?!?!
I remember when AOL was useful, back in the dialup BBS days. But seriously... why would anyone in their right mind still use AOL? The fact that they still survive is absolutely impressive. There is no need for AOL. If you use it, just stop and go with another provider.

Overkill
This guy was a hacker, not some Jihadist killing people or flying planes into buildings. Throw him in a regular prison and move on.

Because it's the future... duh!
Of course network tv is threatened by this. It's old technology and hasn't changed much to adapt to younger generations. TIVO started the push towards controlling your tv, but thats not enough. People want to watch whatever they want, whenever they want it with little interuption. Some may say this is unrealistic, but if the public demands it long enough, someone will provide it. ABC is already starting to offer some shows.
