Re:"only" $47 million in revenue in 2005
Well that's not that much once you consider all the expenses and staffing costs. The purchase price of ~$500 is a bit much unless they can grow the advertising revenue substantially.

Good for the ratings
Stoies like this appear because its good for ratings. Moms everywhere will watch the report because they don't understand MySpace.com and will think their kids are being preyed on. It's a non-isssue for now.

Only half the problem...
Detecting the earthquake is only half the problem. As with the tsunami in 2004, the earthquake was detected, but there were no solid procedures in place to take action with the data. The information went unused for the most part as researchers were unsure who to call or what to do. Quite sad.

Another reason people don't switch...
Many people don't switch because the computer they buy already has Windows on it. Whether its from Dell, Gateway, or Best Buy, the computer already comes with Windows and it works. Considering you can buy a pd from Dell for $500 with XP, why would anyone venture to Linux? I'm an of course asking that question as the average computer user. Obviously more tech gurus like Linux, but thats a small percentage of the user base. Windows works ok and already comes on the PC. That's about it.

Popularity decides if an OS is secure.
An OS's security is directly related to its popularity. The less popular, the more secure and conversely, the more popular, the less secure. Hackers aren't gonna waste time on an unpopular OS. Whens the last time you heard of a security threat for BEOS? It's not because its secure... its because nobody uses it.

All Talk If You Ask Me
"Sony says it will be better than the Xbox 360's features."
Big surprise that Sony says that. Well it should be better since it's gonna be out over a year later than the 360.

Dark Fiber Untapped Resource
This sounds little more than the usual doomsday stuff. In the US there is plenty of unused fiber that covers the entire country. Even companies like Google are interested in tapping this resource. This isn't so much a problem as it is an opportunity for a company to fullfill the demand.

Nice job Swiss....NOT!
Good to see the Swiss being so neutral on the matter

The true use of this table revealed!
Everyone knows that this is nothing more than a MAME setup to play all those old cocktail table games of yesterday! Long live Joust and Ms Pacman!!!

Gimme a break!
This is sponsored by US casinos that are losing business to online ones. Instead of pushing through bs legislation, they should have to compete by making their own casinos online. Yet another example of "bought" legislation that serves only the good of corporations.

$2,246 Is Too Much!
Depending on your needs, you can spend alot less than $2246. I have my pvr running on a Shuttle SS40g with a 1GHz Athlon/512MB RAM/200GB drive. Its been running for 3 years now without problems (knock on wood). If people need a pvr on the cheap, I would recommend buying a used lowend Shuttle PC or similar and save yourself the cash. You could probably get one on eBay for half the cost than this one.

Gimme a break!!
"Many students, teachers, and parents do not realize that downloading a copyrighted song or film over the Internet is illegal and no different than stealing a CD or DVD from a retail store."
Maybe that because it is different. Depriving a retailer of a physical product is not the same as downloading a digital copy from someone! If I download a movie off the net which I would never purchase anyways is far different than stuffing one down my shorts at Walmart. Walmart paid for that DVD and by stealing it, I have stolen money from them. If I download a movie I haven't taken something away from anyone. I'm not saying its legal or moral, but it isn't stealing!

Noteworthy Information
Take a peek at http://www.research.ibm.com/cell/patents_and_publ

Maybe, maybe not.
Many regular users of Firefox like myself are forced to use IE for some things like Launchcast and many other nonFF friendly sites. Also, many people employ FF extensions like IE Tab to use IE within FF. Of course, this may also have something to do with the IE 7.0 beta usage.

Who's doing who the favor?
Google just collects news stories and allows people to search them. When the user clicks one they are brought to their website to read the story! It sounds like some good free advertising to me. Stories like this just make me scratch my head in disbelief!

Linux Driver Reviews??
Many PVRS support linux and the number increases every year. Since this article deals with DVD/DIVX movies and not gaming, I would like to see some reviews with Linux drivers. Anyone have any experience?

Carmack's Best Days Are Over?
Hats off to Carmack for making 3D gaming a reality on the PC, but it's time to say goodbye for now. His best work as of recent has been the X-Prize and not gaming related. What has he released lately to say otherwise??

Very Impressive!
I've quite impressed with the performance of WINE, however these stats can be a little deceiving. These stats are based on a game that works. Getting the game to work in the first place can be quite a challenge. But for the part-time gamer that doesn't wanna be chained to Windows, this is a great alternative indeed!

Re:I can vouch for that!
I've been all over Wisconsin including Milwaukee, Madison, and Greenbay. I've noticed a pretty bad obesity problem pretty much everywhere I've been... especially when you compare it to other states and cities. These long cold winters take a toll up here
http://religiousfreaks.com/ :) -
I can vouch for that!
I live in Wisconsin and that virus must be all over the place judging from the amount of obesity here! Flamebait me if you will, but it's pretty bad here!

Private sector spawns creativity!
It's great to see private companies encouraging this kind if creativity! But at the same time its sad to see billions of federal tax dollars going to complete waste. I can't help but imagine if the US put billions into science and technology and not blowing up countries.

A note to Linux users.
"If you are an experienced C# developer looking to move to Mono for Linux support, this is NOT the book for you. It is a very basic level introduction to development using Mono and C#. It also contains several editing and content mistakes including misplaced screen shots, and simple factual errors such as describing INSERT and UPDATE as DDL and SELECT as DML (they are all DML). Frankly I expected more from APress."
This was taken from a review on Amazon that people may find useful.

Master of the obvious!
"Mitnick says that open source software is easier to analyse for security holes, since you can see the code."
Once again proving his technical prowess!

Site looks pretty plain to me
I really don't understand all the hype with del.icio.us. The site itself is extremely boring and lacks creativity. It's just a collection of links on various subjects or did I miss something? http://religiousfreaks.com/

Its too much!
This show would be better if it were like The Office. Have the IT guys in there aswell as nerdy users, but this intense focus on it is too much. They are gonna burn out within the first few shows.

Times have changed.
While is sad to see Netscape fizzle away, it was the browser that took on IE and fought the good fight. Mozilla and Firefox are the next evolution in the fight against IE. There is one constant in this universe though and that is Internet Explorer
http://religiousfreaks.com/ :( Hopefully this stiff competition will make IE a good browser once again. -
AMD Looking Good
Yet another reason to buy AMD. I dumped Intel back when I had a brandnew Celeron 400 and have never looked back. I see a class action lawsuit in the future

No more articles on this please!!!!
Google hasn't done anything countless other companies have done. But because thits Google the press goes crazy with it. This is laughable to say the least. The more China gets exposed to influences from other countries, the better off they are. Google alone can't dictate policy in China. But once they are established, change can occur.

Who cares??
So what if there aren't many women in tech jobs....maybe thats because they don't wanna be there. How many men are in nursing as compared to women? You don't see too many male hookers either
http://religiousfreaks.com/ ;) It's a non-issue that bores me quite frankly. -
This is funny!
"It is also significant because the Google page will let people know if their search results are being restricted, something that doesn't happen if the filtering is done by the government."
That's not acceptable. People there know they are being kept in the dark. Simply telling them that they are is adding insult to injury. What a joke! On the flip side, Google and others need to be there and push the boundries. Eventually China will open up. It's just a matter of time because you can't keep a good thing like freedom down.

It's A Brave New World.
"Ignorance is not a defense" That's a classic one. Seriously though... what if you played stupid like you don't even know what p2p is and stick to denying d/l. Of course they'll come back and say we have IP logs. But can't you use the "IP spoofing" or "I have a wireless router" idea? I would argue, ok if I stole this song... where is it? Show me that the one you apparently saw on my computer exists? A good defense could win the case I bet.
http://religiousfreaks.com/ -
It's totally unacceptable
I have no problems with wiretapping. Bush just needs to get authorization and have some oversight. If he would just use the proper channels, this wouldn't even be an issue. Tapping converstions on your own stinks of communism and evil dictatorships.
http://religiousfreaks.com/ -
Interesting Point
I find it somewhat interesting how Google rightfully doesn't want to cooperate with the US government on this issue, but I also find it funny how they will appease the Chinese government when its in their best interest.

Still trying to finish a couple games
I've been using MAME to play some old games. After 15 years, I still can't finish Rolling Thunder! What an awesome game that was. I did however finish Ikari Warriors. Damn, I'm old

Lucky for /. Readers!
Google's cache is often times the only way to read an article posted on here. Also, its a good resource for people behind firewalls and can only pull up a cached version. It's a good win for Google.

Bad Idea
With high tech countries like the US performing so poorly in math/science and just about everything else... why on earth would we unleash this on poor nations? Would they be better of with a $100 device that makes clean drinking water? I mean there has to be something better to put all this effort towards. I understand its a noble cause, but I think its misdirected.

Good luck enforcing this one!
They can stick that patent in their (_|_).

Playing catchup again.
For a company that has more money than most countries, I find them rather dull. Vista is boring, XBox 2 is blah, and this portable strikes me as dull. It just seems like MS has kinda faded in the background while newer more innovative companies have stolen the spotlight. When I hear MS, I just yawn.

ID Has No Solid Foundation
ID doesn't belong in the classroom as part of a science class. There is absolutely no evidence to support it at all. Science is far from iron-clad, but there are at least observations and experiments to back up theory. ID on the other hand seems to stem from a lack of observation and depends more on faith and ignorance. I don't want my kids taught something that has absolutely no foundation from which to build on. Science has that. Until ID proponents can find the blueprints for us, they have nothing. Think about it, there is more evidence that Bigfoot exists than there is of an intelligent designer.

How interesting
I loved this show when it first came out. Of course the network didn't support it well and it got canceled. My how times have changed because this show has taken off much to the credit of the loyal fan base which resurrected the show. I hope FOX remembers who was right in the future when another show like this comes along. And good luck to you Stewie and you new found success

It's ok if we reap the benefits too!
If the advetising doesn't detract from the game and the revenue reduces the cost of it, then I'm in. If it doesn't than what's the point from a gamers perspective?
