how come all the climatologists predicting global warming based on man's CO2 emission failed to predict that temperatures would remain steady and fall slightly after 1998

Perhaps because they hadn't included that El Nina of 1997/8 raised temperatures before declining slightly? Eleven of the warmest years recorded were in the past 13 years.

Oh yeah, what is the relationship between the temperature rise on other planets circling our sun and that of Earth?

The reality seems to disagree with your argument(s). While well written in terms of their 'readability' and flow, your posts seem almost venomously anti-Obama to the extent that it almost seems that you'd rather argue and condescend rather than discuss anything of real value.

Apart from the clever right-wing zings and allusions to a couple of books you're a fan of, you're not really offering any substance to the argument. In fact, you're doing exactly what you so fervently accuse various other posters of doing...shouting your OPINION.

I respect that you and I can have different opinions, but to attempt to masquerade them as facts is a little bit silly. As an example, in one of your earlier posts, you opine:

Would you care to back that ridiculous statement up with some FACT? You won't. You know why? Because you can't. It's a ridiculous, red herring of a statement cleverly disguised to sound as if there were some historical evidence to support it. Here's a small point you may not have considered: how on earth do you propose that those businesses will suddenly come up with the money to pull up all their roots and plant them in a new country?

Large corporations have thousands of offices scattered across the country, it's going to be exponentially more expensive to try to move all of their operations, retool/retrain the local people of insert-new-country-here than it is to suck it up and pay some taxes that should not have been dodged in the first place. It sounds to me like you're one of these dyed-in-the-wool Republicans who merely resists the ideas of ANY taxes being raised ever because....well....that's what Republicans do, apparently. While none of us (including myself) WANTS to pay any/more taxes, we recognize their necessity. Furthermore, if we hadn't made some of the horrific mistakes of the last 8 years, we wouldn't be in the position we're in. A very expensive and unnecessary war in Iraq got us into hock, and now we have to pay up, like it or not. The money's gotta come from somewhere folks.

Taxes are punishment even though they may not be viewed that way by those who enact them. The disincentivize certain actions. This is a basic economic principle.

1. Failing to understand the 'Attention Deficit Economy'(ADE). SEC rules, designed to discourage fraud, punish companies which spend too much on R & D, it's not enough to convince your customers you have ADD by swapping product names every 3 months, you actually have to behave as a wildly successful startup during a bubble, every 3 months.
2. Failing to be a monopoly. Sun may have thought winning an antitrust case against a monopoly should suffice, but it is much, much better to be a monopoly and let other's spend their money trying to prove that you are.
3. Failing to make a convincing case the economy can't survive without you (as the auto companies, banks and certain insurance companies have.)
4. Failing to be 'too big to fail'
5. Being overly focused on actual products and technology engineering when the zeitgeist dictated that successful companies focus on complex derivatives, bubble assets and fraud.
6. Contributing more to the Linux stack than all other companies put together and then changing their stock name from SUNW to JAVA when it should've been LINX.
7. Believing the 'build a better mousetrap' theory, technology is never enough in an age where such a high percentage of the population is technically illiterate. The world is littered with examples of excellent technology shunned by the majority.
8. Late 90s 'road apple' workstations which were a bad combination of the worst of a slogging PC compatible bus with expensive SPARC chips and gave rise to the 'slowaris' slang.
9. Failing to get these and other hardware dumped in the 1990s by failed dot coms classified as troubled assets under the federal TARP program.
10. Overall their biggest failing is that they weren't sufficiently evil.

so somebody better post them here for posterity, and I guess that will be me.

End of an Icon
It's been quite a while since I've written anything in my blog. Having worked for the Corporate Development group at Sun for the past 3 1/2 years, I've had to be very careful about what I posted on a public blog. I felt it was better to be safe than sorry, so I've left it to the many other prolific bloggers at Sun to tell our story.

But with the recent announcement that Sun will become part of Oracle, I feel able for the first time to talk about how we got here. Not about the Oracle acquisition itself, but rather how we as a company came to the point where seeking an acquirer was the best way forward. Granted, 2009 is one of the most challenging years in decades and many companies are struggling, but when I joined Sun in 1997, we had the technology world by the tail and were poised to become as influential and lucrative as our more famous rivals (Microsoft, IBM, Intel, HP and even Oracle). So as excited as I am about becoming part of Oracle (there were many far worse options in my opinion), it still feels a little anti-climatic.

So as a sort of "post mortem" on the company, I'd like to examine where I think Sun really missed its opportunities. Some things are only obvious in hind sight, but many of these things are things I've spent my career at Sun advocating and attempting to drive forward. Maybe this is a bit of sour grapes on my part, but mostly this is just an attempt to say externally some of what I've been saying internally at Sun for most of my tenure, now that our future as a Corporation is moving out of our hands.

I will call this my "Top 10 Reasons Sun is Setting". In typical Top 10 fashion, I will start with the #10 Reason Sun is Setting and work my way up to the #1 reason. I know there is a lot of opinion on this topic out there, so feel free to comment as you see fit. I think we may all find this cathartic.

When you hear that Oracle wants to make 15% profit in the first year, are you embarressed? I mean you (and the other managers) could have cut all those useless projects that Oracle will cut now years ago, couln't you? Does it really need Larry Ellison to make a company with 13bn revenue and 55% gross margin profitable?

I don't blame employees - at least not the rank-and-file. Sun is full of great, dedicated, energetic people who have done some incredible things with technology. Better than our rivals. My comments will be more on missed opportunities and poor strategies, not on the failure of any specific employees.

No, I am not embarrassed by the idea that Oracle might turn a profit when Sun alone could not. It's easy to turn a profit by slashing jobs. Sun has been trying to turn a profit through increasing revenues, which is much harder.

- with a webserver?
- with support fees of 1000$/socket for an application server or a database while direct competitors charge at least 20x that much?

April 6, 2009 - Sony's PS3 outsold Nintendo's Wii during the month of March. Sales of the PS3 were reported at 146,948 units as opposed to the 99,335 Wii units sold. In third place, the Xbox 360 is noted to have 43,172 units sold.

Apparently, Ryu Ga Gotoku 3 (or Yakuza 3, here in the U.S.) and Resident Evil 5 helped urge the PS3 sales, as both games were at the top of the software sales charts. This is, comparatively speaking, good news for Sony's current-gen hardware, though analysts predict that the PS3 will not threaten the Wii's global dominance of the market.

Maybe the casual gamers have moved on and now only the hardcore gamers remain to purchase new software and peripherals? The Wii is at market saturation nearly everywhere and now it's time for the PS3 and X360 to move ahead at least in month to month sales.

For some anecdotal evidence I own all three consoles, each one since their own launch date, and I never touch my Wii (cue childish sexual jokes). In the last month I've hammered away at Valkyria Chronicles and Metal Gear Online for my PS3 for hours upon hours every day. For my 360 I play Virtua Fighter 5 and Fallout 3 regularly as well. And between both the PS3 and 360 I play Street Fighter II HD Remix and Street Fighter IV daily as well. My Wii? Maybe when Dead Space Wii comes out I'll plug the console back in but my god has that thing been collecting dust for months.

Not to mention what hardcore treats the PC is getting coming up by way of Blizzard. I already told my boss I needed a week of vacation off for both of the releases of Starcraft II and Diablo III...

Is hardcore gaming dead because of the Wii? No. Nintendo can't stroke its ego quite that much.

I'm not sure how interested they are in J2ME, JavaFX, or any other areas of Java that doesn't effect their existing products.

I would have thought the same thing, but in yesterday's conference call, they stated that Oracle was the leading embedded database which took me by surprise.

With J2ME having such reach in mobile devices, I would think they would care.

Four men linked to The Pirate Bay, one of the world's biggest free file-sharing websites, were each jailed for a year on Friday for breaching copyright and ordered to pay 30 million Swedish crowns ($3.58 million) in compensation.

Dumb criminals are easier to catch, so they get lower sentence times? Sounds like republicans trying to put more democrats in jail - republican states - country bumpkins, not sophisticated, but "them 'city-dwellin' sophisticated types -- thems we got to put behind bars longer!"

A great deal of our laws and penalties are decided upon what group of people will be most targetted. They've targetted race and religions in the past, and they've gone after political affiliations in the past 30, most obviously under Bush, where they deliberately fired Liberal leaning attorneys, and tried to only place conservo-loyalists, under their summer intern program, where they filtered out anyone with liberal keywords in their name, and even based on, the now public campaign contribution lists, democratic-party donors were targetted by Bush in his first as well.

Too often liberals are all focused on their own issues and forget to watchout for their fellow "non-conservatives". Prison, sentencing, and penalties all need major reform at the Federal and in my state (CA). The sentencing is harmful to society as a whole and our country won't be able to support the ever increasing prison load in addition to our other financial burdens.

I don't know about nation-wide, but in California, a sizable junk of our state budget has to go to prison building and prison/prisoner maintenance, and CA is ALREADY guilty of prisoner abuse with the state operating prisons at 200% of holding capacity. It's been that way for years and has been getting worse. Don't even think about health care for prisoners. It took a federal judge ordering the state to spend money for health care for prisons to get it allocated, and another ruling has ordered CA to reduce it's prison population to "only" about 133% of capacity. Following the judges order would involve releasing 57,000 inmates.

Of course many of the prisoners are in for non-violent, mandatory drug offenses, which is probably the single largest part of the prison population these days (grown since Bush-I implemented 0-tolerance). The federal prison system doubled its population during the Clinton years due to the mandatory drug sentencing (another reneged promise), predominantly affects blacks, and liberals. I don't know if it is still true, but during the Clinton era, the fastest growing segment of prison population were women, because the male drug-dealers used their women-girlfriends as couriers, thinking they'd be less likely to get caught. That sure backfired. Dunno if the first-timer rate has declined for women or not.

It's a sucky and corrupt system along with other parts of our government.

Many old movies are being lost due to film decay, many of which are stored only on a single reel made from acetate compounds. Then there are fires in warehouse, museums and the odd tunneling company causing archives to collapse.

Because it's software and is written. Writings already enjoy copyrights. Patents protect actual physical goods. A specific implementation of a CPU, car engine, or knife. And a patent application used to require a working model of what is being patented. However while patents may of been helpful at one tyme they no longer are. Instead they delay progress.

Since the article being discussed deals with Apple patents and Apple not willing to let the W3C use them, here's another story about Apple and patents: "Taiwan's Elan sues Apple over touchscreen patents"". I don't know how many patents are sought for these reasons but a number of patents are either held by patent trolls or are for protection, you come up with something you think is unique and use it. Now if you don't patent it someone else may slap you with a patent infringement lawsuit. But of you have a bunch of patents you may find one the other party uses, so you can sign a cross licensing agreement.

A good proportion of undergraduate computer scientists can not explain RSA after having it explained to them more than once. Society as a whole has benefited from having it disclosed - the entire reason patents exist -

Copyrights also require disclosure, so patents are not needed for this.

Unlike most software patents, it is not something that could be easily reproduced by someone seeing the effect.

It is an algorithm and they should not be patented. Neither should business methods.

I guess regarding this farfetched 96% statistic... Look who it's coming from. Brought to you by the same market researchers who contended the 13-17 year old music listeners would accept ad-supported music. The 96% figure seems more likely to be a massive error in calculation than anything.

I've spoken with a few retailers about their Netbook selection and as far as I can tell, Linux dominates based on price. Sure, I don't have hard data to back it up but 96% seems off-the-map implausible.

Well said. No argument from me. I even work for one of these companies and I was pissed when they got the money. Yeah, it probably would have meant I'd lose my job, but I'm not the type to declare defeat so quickly -- especially since I think that much of this "crisis" was manufactured early on and exacerbated until it became what it was. There was *tons* of money to be made by doing so.

One thing that upset me was that many of these smaller banks would have had a chance to step into the vacuum and really clean up. Yeah, some were badly run and they went under as they should have, but many, many more are well run without excessive risk. They deserved their shot, and the opportunity of a lifetime was taken away from them. Now the corrupt players are back in the game, ready to create more trouble -- so much the worse.
