Re:Oh no!
If SCO and Rob Enderle aren't outright lying (!) then they hint that they're not going after smaller users.
From Rob's keynote at SCOForum 2004, he states: "Now I hear from the Linux folks that it is SCO that is the bad guy here taking away the rights of those that worked hard to contribute to Linux and to that I say Bull Shit. SCO, unlike the RIAA which is targeting kids, is going after large well funded companies who are perfectly able to take care of themselves. In all cases the firms being challenged have more resources and are larger than SCO. If there is one thing firms like Daimler Chrysler don't need is a bunch of "hang'em high" bigots who think of themselves as judge, jury, and executioner."
So it comes down to - do you believe Rob Enderle, that SCO is only going after the big companies, and isn't like the RIAA and targeting kids..? -
Does your life lack a cause? There are people who get up every day, work a 9 to 5 and go home to their families trading their lives for varying degrees of cash. In my view, though clearly not theirs, they are selling their lives very cheaply. These are wage slaves and the difference between people like that and a zombie is generally lost on me. Do you realize that many, I'm not saying all or even most, of the Linux supporters are like this, they have never coded anything in their lives, have never even played a video game, in fact the only reason they are supporting Linux is because it is a cause and their life lacks one. That is an incredibly sad group of folks, and I wonder what their reaction will be when they finally understand they are supporting software and not the second coming.
-
The stocks againLets be honest. The people on Wallstreet are probably an indicator to what newSCO will do next. If their stock trade bad for a reasonable time (1-2 months) their "media machine" will roll out a new story to boost their stockprice. So, right now newSCO isn't doing too well on the exchange.
Lets have a look at their 6 months movement.
This little chart shows how newSCO's stock is doing. Their recent pressreleases and blabbering during the SCOforum left a certain spike upwards, then things settled again, and the price is currently at around $4.30. Compared to such companies as Novell, wich you can see the comparison of here, there clearly is a trend that whenever newSCO releases some FUD to the general public and the eager-to-cover media their stock is up for a short time, and the companies they are in legal battles with are down. Then it all slowly goes back as it was before. IBM, RedHat and Novell are all three doing rather well in comparison to newSCO.
It's sad to see how this hunger for money drive a former great company into the ground. I hope both investors and current stockholders realize that the only thing that is going to save newSCO is to focus on their product and shuffle Darl and his litigation off into the void. -
Free Software and the Idiots who Buy It
Read Rob Enderle's SCO Keynote.

eurrghhh
I can't decide what nauseated me more, the article or the banner ad above it: Walt Disney World offering a free vacation kit. With a real CD and stuff!
I'm sure the folks at Disney think they're really being helpful. Just as helpful as young Martin Taylor who's known nothing but Microsoft, yet thinks he can counter Linux by competing with Novell.
But more sickening was Rob Enderle's SCOforum keynote address

Re:Voting her book down is the wrong tactic
I won't even get into how I don't feel even an ounce of pitty for a stupid little girl with all the common sence of a door stop (or certain executives in charge of a group of litigious bastards), but to call "Ms. T" a victim in this too is just dumb. Not only does she has at much at stake here as Penguin, but she could at LEAST offer up a public apology on her site or help pay for bandwidth costs on account of her ignorance.
..all that aside though, if I were Katie Jones, I'd turn Katie.com into a hardcore porn site simply out of spite. -

Re:SCO Community Forum?
Wow, I'm retarded. That was last year. This year's is just as substance-free.

If I were Darl McBrideI think the idea here is that he doesn't want to lose face by having to withdraw. If he fights the remaining cases, he can hold up competitors, and when he loses, he can claim that he lost for some reason other than being in the wrong. He might claim the courts didn't understand the technical merits of his case, or some such.
Also, he probably wants to mantain SCO's reputation as litigious bastards, to threaten people with later. -
Re:Bottom line?
And a marketing push for SCO Openserver/Unixware will?
<form action="smoke" value="crack">
Sure. Now that they are not the litigious bastards they once were, wouldn't you want to do business with them? I am sure they will start contributing code to GPL projects, maybe even the same code in questions, to prevent any further problems in the future. I would not be shocked if they released a new version of SCO Linux with the 2.6 kernel in a few weeks, and refunded what few license fees they received. When all is said and done, most people will just let it pass and understand that they were just mistaken in their belief that they owned Linux IP. I mean, its not like anyone was actually hurt, right?
</form>
Oh wait, wtf was I thinking?!? -
Utah, maybe?
Go to Lindon, Utah, find Darl McBride, and get him to sit on your head. Instant asshat.
I bet that all you'd have to offer him is some evidence that Linux is infringing on SCO's IP...
Easy! -
Linux's been there for a while
I work in a company that does work for Lockheed, and they've been using Linux for quite a while. Even without this, they could still be targeted by litigious bastards. Good luck to SCO targeting Lockheed though. They're humongous and build fighter planes and nuclear submarines that could level the SCO headquarters with the push of a button!!!
-
Reliable source?
The whole "article" seems to depend on the word of "a Lockheed employee who is close to the transition." I have my doubts about their source. For example, the source says this about Lockheed's lawyers:
According to our source, Lockheed's lawyers "are like a deer in the headlights" because of SCO's legal threats over Linux usage.
Are you serious? Lockheed is a defense contractor, a major government supplier. Their lawyers aren't going to be "deer in the headlights" against these or any other litigious bastards. More like "alligators in the swamp," if you want to use nature as a metaphor. If SCO so much as puts a toe in Lockheed's water, they're going to lose a leg.
So after calling BS on this, can the source be trusted? He's competely ignorant of the real legal threat, but knows a lot about what's on and under the engineers' desks.
I say their "reliable source" is the janitor. He's probably the guy who stole your lunch out of the fridge last week. -
Re:A few thoughtsYou don't think Apple will stop me the same way they will Real if I come up with a way to play everything (including realmedia) on an ipod and I distribute it?
That depends. Do you plan on distributing it as FOSS, or do you plan on starting a competing music store and earning money off the work Apple has done to develop, popularize and improve their product? Certainly the distinction between the lone hacker and a competing corporation must be clear, and the distinction is intent. If you hack your TiVo for the fun of it, the company couldn't care less - you're just voiding your own warranty. Most companies won't even care if you tell others how to hack it, and Apple seems to have been pretty supportive of the OSS developer community with the advent of OS X. But if you start selling your hacks to others (a la General Computing selling modkits for Missile Command and getting sued by Atari), then you've stepped over a line that invites litigation.
The fact thar Real is a mere shadow of its once-dominant position in online multimedia should be a clue to any customers considering purchasing music through RealNetworks. I wonder if this is an act of desperation, or are they deliberately taking on a fight they can't win in order to boost their stock price?
-
Re:$700!!! That's crazy talk!
I just can't figure out what justifies that price tag
Don't be so hard on Sony. We all know where $699 are going. That leaves them $1 for covering development, production, shipping, service and a profit margin. Pretty impressive, if you ask me.

SCO really loves OSSThis recent press release clearly shows SCO really loves OSS. Without they could not have a major new release of the their OS - the hypocritical bastards

FPGNAA Penetrates Popular Pirating Network
By Commander TrollcoChicago, IL - The GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America) announces their forcible entry into the Soulseek filesharing network. This action was tasked to faggot tar baby Lysol, who created the GNAA's first slsk chatroom.
This development is expected to make thousands of gay nigger converts as nigger-seed-virus laced mp3s and FLACs are injected into rooms Underground Hip-Hop and Jazz (Full CDs), among others.
GNAA member Lysol commented, "With our new slsk chatroom GNAA we will be able to spread our holy nigger seed to copyright violating music pirates the world over!". He then proceeded to fuck Jazz (Full CDs) founder Lamig with his massive nigger dong, making her the third human female(after the Olsen twins) to be impregnated with the holy gay nigger seed.Already, signs of niggerdom are spreading. Last Measure is being distributed on the network by persons not directly known to the ghey darkies.

I don't get it
Linux users need to decide what their operating system is all about. Is it about freedom and doing it your way, or is it all about sales and making money?
I'm sorry, but the two are not compatible. Once your focus becomes "market share" (shouldn't that be "market selfish"?) then you start in with the competition and copyrighting and everything that goes with it.
It would be a shame to see the creativity and individualism that spurred the Linux revolution denatured and dilluted, like so many other initally promising social trends, by the invisible hand of the "almighty greenback". -
Re:Orrin Hatch?

I really hope you don't mean this guys -
Oddly Enough
Whenever something even remotely spinnable happens in one of these cases, SCO is there with a prepared press release that is sent out to the media almost immediately.
Its now 4PM EST so they have had a few hours to come up with SOMETHING, but their website only has two PRs so far today... one about a new release, and another about a partnership with Ericom.
Maybe even they dont know how to spin this one... -

Under Solaris, "init 5" brings the system in poweroff mode...
Under SCO... in firmware mode (on x86 machines, it's the same as runlevel 0)
Once we take control of SCO's "init", we can implement "telinit 0". Don't worry -- be happy!

Re:Nothing changes for big companies
"I don't see part-time amateurs having the money to cause that kind of trouble."
That's why we have lawyers and venture capitalists. To provide time (lawyers) or capital (VCs) to finance the patent infringement claim. Or they simply sell it to some litigious bastards (remember: the company that used to be called SCO is now called something like Tarantella; the company that is now called SCO used to be called Caldera) and let them handle it. -
DependsI usually use postmaster or abuse @ the domain of the site asking for my address.
On sites that have a legit need for my email address like Amazon, ebay, Newegg and others I buy stuff from I use Sendmail's plus notation (also known as the user+detail format) OR an alias on one of my personal domains. I use aliases quite a bit. That way I can remove the alias and shut off the potential (or actual) flow of spam to that address. It's easier to remove an alias than it is to have Procmail filter out mail to a given plus notation address. It always amazes me who gets my alias or plus notation email address over time. For example I may notice that I'm getting penis enlargment or mortgage spam from "networkcomputing@mydomain.com." Hmm... I wonder who sold the spammer that address... Hmm....
When filling in First name Last name fields I always use Marion Morrison. Before you Google for that name try to guess who's it is (ok, a hint, was).
I also understand that it's very common to use pres@whitehouse.gov, or so I hear. Another favorite is darl@sco.com

Hah!
So how about it, IBM? You've got nothing to lose! Want to make a lot of geeks happy and release that final patent into the public domain?
Lets count how many gif's there is in SCO's site? .... time to cash in, in their own game! -

Re:Canada not afraid
Can a canadian or someone who knows fill us in if there is a parallel to the RIAA in that country (or any other country).
The closest thing I could find was Canadian Country Music Association. However their about us page differs greatly from RIAA's about us page.
Remember, frivilous lawsuits is a big business here in the US. We are familiar with the litigious bastards. We, believe it or not, actually have lawyers on TV telling uninteligent people that they will get them CA$H for any wrongdoing done to them. -
Re:$1111 !?!! Too costlyBut still 1Ghz VIA processor, 256MB RAM, 40 Gig HD shouldn't be costing me $800
Maybe you are forgetting the $699 component from your calculations?

Their New Products....... are codenamed "Plan B". Hilarious! I guess they've figured out Plan A isn't working... Looks like another example of how every company who buddies up with Microsoft goes under in the end.
No, seriously, folks, take a look at SCO's "Five Reasons to Choose Unix Instead Of Linux.
1. SCO UNIX® is a Proven, Stable and Reliable Platform
Translation: It's Unix. This differentiates us from Linux because... uhh... our system starts with 'U'?
2. SCO UNIX® is backed by a single, experienced vendor
Translation: Vendor lock-in comes at no extra charge! We're your Single Point Of Failure(TM), so you better hope we don't go under. Don't worry, we've never been better. *cough*lying*cough*
3. SCO UNIX® has a Committed, Well-Defined Roadmap
Translation: We WILL release stuff unfinished if our marketing guys tell us to. Quality is Job NONE!
4. SCO UNIX® is Secure
Translation: We now have less marketshare than BeOS. Evildoers leave us alone because we're obviously self-destructing - we push OURSELVES off the cliff into obscurity and humiliation.
5. SCO UNIX® is Legally Unencumbered
Translation: We promise not to sue ourselves - unless we get really desperate.
Many Thanks to BFG9000's SCO Marketspeak to English Dictionary, without which this could not have been possible. -

Re:Sun will Shine at the Big Blue
Agreed, but how much of that "high-end Solaris" is under SCO license restrictions?
Great question. Probably some substantial part of it is covered, if Sun thought it was worth paying $100M for it over the years.
So here's a good question for people looking at Solaris: do you really want to be using a technology licenced from litigious bastards who might try to change the licencing terms, or sue end users at any point, and who believe that "contracts are something you use against partners"? Or would you rather have a nice Unix that's been extensively and expensively proved to be absolutely free of SCO code? The second looks much less risky to me. -
