Starsiege: Tribes and its sequel Tribes 2 in my opinon, are two of the best online FPS titles ever.

Tribes 1 would have recieved several GoTY awards, but it was overshadowed by Half-Life. Tribes 2's release was plagued by lots of bugs and patches, and many of the T1 vets didn't like the "new stuff".

Both games were also very easily modded, (there was amazing freedom and ease, but secure so there was almost no hacking) and I actually started learning how to program by modding and tweaking a server I ran off my home connection. It was also made for 56k connections, so bandwidth usage was low. (I ran a server for three years without my ISP caring) I played Tribes 2 for a long time, but then high school came along - last time I checked, there were only about 60 servers left, and only a few actually had people playing.

If they're going to target Cedega for compatibility, why not just use SDL, OpenGL and OpenAL instead of going through another cycle-eating software layer that simply acts as a Direct* wrapper around them? It would enable you to use anything in those libraries without having to worry if the guys over at Transgaming are keeping up with Microsoft.
 
Writing for what's basically an emulator so you maintain a false "cross-platform" compatibility is not the way to go, and it is not the way it will go. The only way to be truly and effectively cross-platform is to only use cross-platform libraries.

Sure, if you're only making one install CD, it's almost free.

But we're talking about installing on about FIFTY MILLION computers. If you are going to do that, you will need a factory to print CDs, a distribution network to get them out there, etc... Linspire already has this, and they're offering to do it all for about 10 cents a computer.

I used to work for a software company that published new release / upgrade schedules to a semi rigid timetable (date given was not down to day / week /month, just quarterly, so rigid but with a bit of "leeway" if you aimed for ideal Q start release). QA process would involve bug prioritisation, these would be fixed on a priority basis, and new (bugfixed, either all bugs or critical bugs depending on remaining timescale) releases would periodically again enter QA. This allowed a lot of bugs to be removed, but even with this approach, a release usually had some bugs left when time had run out for further fixes. Release was never delayed (unless extremely rare case of some real showstopper bug remaining that made software non viable), even though QA still had a list of outstanding bugs. It was deemed more important to ship on schedule than have a product free of (known) bugs. As long as that philosophy (re shipping product) is in place, then the people high up in the company have to take the hefty share of blame. At this company I *never* saw a release that actually passed QA (QA were sensibly stringent and never signed off software if they thought faults remained, so someone higher up had to sign an override of QA) (posted as anon to reduce risk of company I used to work for being easy to infer)

7 days is farcical It could take the best part of that to download something for many people. e.g they go to work and only have PC turned on when they are in the house, turn PC off overnight, so downloads restricted primarily to weekends, a few hours each evening. Although UK broadband connectivity is getting better a lot of people still at the end of slow ADSL lines. Viable if your PC is on 24 /7 (or appropriate good amount of time) or you can get very fast downloads, but otherwise 7 days is a killer (unless 7 days starts when download ends, which, on my reading, is not what the article implied). As this is a limited trial I think we can assume no idea of "real world" download speeds and so have to assume downloading HD prog will not be swift. As for DRM - a farce as a UK licence fee paying resident... and I'm not even going to comment on Windows / IE only aspect.

[The controller] was incredibly responsive to even slight wrist movements-I barely had to move my hand at all.
