Re:Ain't gonna happen>There is, by my understanding, an absolutely ZERO chance that Fox will pick up a second season of Firefly and an approximately equivalent chance that Fox will consider surrendering the television rights to another channel.
Given a largely-male demographic for science fiction, you're saying that FOX wouldn't even pass the proverbial leaf on the wind over to these guys?
(One ticket to hell, please.)

Big News OutletsI would LOVE for big news outlets and game magazines to publicly blast this show for the crap paid-for spectacle that it is. Its not just the horrid product placement categories.....its the fact that they vote for games that aren't even out yet, which to us gamers is just plain fucking insulting. It insults our integrity, our intelligence, and our loyalty to gaming. If anybody knows the email addresses of the people behind this farce, please by all means post it here so we can let them know how we feel. For now, you can go to the feedback page and leave them a note. I tried to find a marketing persons email address through their media kit section, but you have to REGISTER TO GET THEIR MEDIA KIT! As someone in advertising.....I have to say thats bloody ridiculous. Great way to keep people from getting more information about advertising opportunities with you idiots. Although maybe thats for the best now that I think about it.

Re:Who are Spike TV?
Check it out, mate: http://www.spiketv.com/
But who are they? More specifically, what about them gives them any credibility when it comes to judging computer and video games? Does their regular programming even focus on video games?
It's kind of the "station for thirty-something couch potatoes". They play a lot of action movies and TV shows and some sports type of thing. I don't recall and video game only type TV shows but I do know game publishers advertise heavily on the station. -
Re:Quake machinima seems forgottenYes, Machinima started with Quake. I know because I directed one of the first Machinima movies, Apartment Huntin'. We used Quake for that. You can see that movie if you scroll to the bottom of this page.
In fact we still sometimes use a modified version of Quake 2 called Qfusion which allows us to use Quake 3 assets within the open source Quake 2 game engine. A nice example of this can be seen in a series of shorts we did for SpikeTV called Gamer Gags.

2005 has been a good year for MachinimaThere's actually quite a bit going on this year in the Machinima movement...
The Academy of Machinima Arts and Sciences has announced the 2005, not so annual, Machinima Film Festival. The festival will once again be held at the American Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, New York.
Machinima in general has grown in popularity and commercial success since the last festival in 2003 with such recent work as Paul Marino's Half Life 2 music video, "I'm Still Seeing Breen" appearing on MTV2's Video Mods, Rooster Teeth's recent series of shorts for IFC, the Nisha Chronicles for GMD Studios' latest A.R.G. promoting the Audi A3, and The ILL Clan's "Gamer Gags" for SpikeTV.
In all it's been a good year for Machinima, and it's only August.

Another 48 Hours Killed the Broadcast Flag
In a major media blunder the US Government and major media corporations are denying the resuscitation of the broadcast flag. Despite wide reports, Doug Herzog, President of SpikeTV (the First Network for Men) has confirmed that he along with other media executives have decided to abandon all attempts to push the broadcast flag through congress. In a press release Herzong noted,
"After looking at our summer lineup of movies, and previewing 48 Hours, starring Eddie Murphey and Nick Nolte, it was pretty clear that we wouldn't need a broadcast flag to keep people from recording our programming. I and a few others, hoping to promote our July 4th weekend of 48 Hours of 48 Hours, only on Spike TV also watched Another 48 Hours. After we finished the film, we were confident that we had done the right thing to abandon the broadcast flag and honestly were considering abandoning television altogether." -

Re:Defined a generation
You say that, but consider the current cartoons that could define the next generation that are airing today. Family Guy, hilarious as it is, is often very edgey and borderline acceptable. Infact it's interesting to me what is acceptable one day and not teh next. Family guy for example was canned, now it's back. 2 years ago you could not watch Ultimate Fighting (you the hardcore cage fighting) on television because it was banned. Then it was allowed on pay per view. And now this weekend, for the first time it is on regular (US) cable tv (http://www.spiketv.com./ What next?

Re:Have they completely missed the point?I like InuYasha because of the storytelling and character development
Bravo! I admit, it is one of the shows that I enjoy - along with Fullmetal Alchemist, Samurai Jack, and One Piece (The Fansubbed version, not the abomination on "4Kids TV" - blecch!) among others.
So I have eclectic tastes - so sue me. I also like "Hey! Spring Of Trivia" (SpikeTV - a Japanese Gameshow), Survivor, The Entertainer (just ended), Nova, Antiques Roadshow, and have a morbid fascination with Carpocalypse.
In any case, the best thing about true anime shows, IMO, is that they are *not* designed for *American* kids. Ever since Johnny Quest went off the air, American Cartoons have been watered down dreck. If CN can actually capture some of the story depth and maturity of real Japanese Anime (even the lightest Anime is deeper than any Network cartood that I can think of), then I will do nothing but cheer them on. If they stick it with an 'american' depth and maturity, I'll turn it off.

Spike's original content
But their origional content, and their ads (first time I ever saw "male enhancement" ads other than SPAM was on Spike) are just demeaning to any guy with a brain.
I'll give you the ads, but ease up on their original content. Remember, Spike TV is the network that gave us The Joe Schmo Show, the first reality show that has ever been any good. An original concept, plenty of comedy, bizarre situations that bring out the best in the (real) contestants, and even some boobage for us men who actually do enjoy thinking about sex. -

Fraud in the name of Television
This seems to be a going trend for TV producers to claim they are working on project A in order to get people to unwittingly participate in project B... here on Slashdot not to look ago there was a warning story about MTV Networks fooling experts into appearing on a Comedy Central project called "Crossballs"
MTV Networks seems to be making a habit of this. MTV itself fooled a half dozen college students who thought they were interning on a music video project into being the stars of Faking the Video. And let's not forget TNN/SpikeTV's project called The Joe Schmo Show.
There oughta be a law against these things... because apparently basic fraud hasn't caught up to when fraud is being done in the name of TV. -
The Joe Schmo showRhett Reese is the producer of the Joe Schmo show, a show that spoofed reality shows by setting a few people up to think that they were on a reality show.
This seems like the same thing in a way, and the Joe Schmoe show was quite funny. You can read Rhett's blob here. No information yet, but that might change soon.

Re:You Bastards!
Is that the original Takeshi's Castle or the remix?
I wouldn't mind seeing them bring Takeshi's Castle to American TV. It reminds me of American Gladiators, which if I remember correctly also had international versions. -
Re:no doubt..I just wish I knew where to start. See this all started when I fell in love a few months ago.
Being the geek that I am, there no way I'm going to buy something and not upgrade it or at the very least know how it works. So I've been reading whatever I can get my hands on and watching stuff like Horsepower TV . But everything I read is either basic stuff, like changing your oil or really advanced stuff about engine timings and camshafts that lose me after the first paragraph.
I haven't felt so clueless since I accidently took an advanced Philosphy class in my freshman year.

Re:good or bad?Make money, good.
lose money, bad. This lesson brought to you by the Kenny Blankenship and Vic Romano school of economics.

Rocket Science? More like medical/drug science
-
This sounds like....
This sound like the Most Extreme Elimination Challenge, only in reverse and not funny. and no crazy people falling into puddles of fluid. and of course, no Vic Romano and Kenny Blankenship.

Grand Challenge?
Notice:
DARPA has subsequently changed the event from "Grand Challenge" to "Most Extreme Elimination Challenge" in hopes of drawing more support and viewer coverage. Fox is asking for broadcasting rights. -
Re:Makes me wonder
Don't forget SpikeTV's Most Extreme Elimination Challenge!!! Real life video games + Funny japanese dubbing = best of both worlds! Those guys talk some serious smack...

SCO on Fox TV?If it's not, then we can kick SCO's ass into oblivious.
I'm sorry, but I fail to see the advantage of getting SCO onto a stupid Spike TV show?
Wait... maybe that's what this whole thing is... maybe it's some newfangled Reality TV Series! That would explain a heluva lot.
Tonight, after Surviving Average Joe in Eden is 'SCO: Litigious Bastards'. Follow the life of Darl and his cronies as he sees just how far he can push Big Blue and the tech industry at large! Tonight at 9!
Betcha FOX is behind it...

Re:Fan Boy RPG GroupiesOnly the most dumbed down concept and straight forward message is going to make it through. "Hey, lets buy Timmy a football game."
If you were unfortunate enough to actually watch the joke that was theSpikeTV VGA(Video Game Awards), you'll notice that a lot of the winning titles were as you mention, dumbed down concepts and mainstream pop culture related. Very few of what I thought were really good games even got nominated. An example of the winners:
- Game of the Year: Madden NFL 2004
- Best Sports Game: Tony Hawk's Underground
- Best Animation Game: DOA Beach Volleyball - (ok I'll admit the animation was pretty good)
- Best Driving Game: NASCAR Thunder 2004
- Best Game Based on a Movie: Enter the Matrix
- Best Fighting Game: WWE Smack Down: Here Comes the Pain

the VGAs were trash
I'm glad other's felt the same as I did. The VGAs were a disgrace, but I don't know what I was really expecting from a network that markets to the lowest common denominator of men who can't have entertainment without strippers, sports or people injuring themselves/others.
Everyone who was saddened by the VGAs should relay their opinions to the network. The five of us who care can make a difference!
Ah, who am I kidding... I'll just play Viewtiful Joe instead, the game that I think should have won best animation, or at least been a freaking nominee!

Re:digital Soupy SalesDon't forget Japanese shows that have made their way over here to the states. Like Most Extreme Elimination Challenge for example, which is a redubbed (hilariously too I might add, although I wouldn't be totally surprised if they really said those things in the real Japanese version. My friend from Osaka told me its based off a very old Japanese TV show called Takeshi's Castle. Makes me wish I could afford to get Japanese channels on the cable for my dorm. Actually....makes me wish I could afford cable for my dorm period.
