Re:Bundled Soon? This buzz is all well and good, but the word is getting out that people have choices, even on Windows. Look at Firefox surpassing 10,000,000 downloads. And Firefox throws a specially branded Google search page at you.
Microsoft's market share is slowly but surely eroding, and as people begin to see the high quality of open source software, it won't be long before a completely open source system becomes available to, and usable by, Joe Sixpack.

Re:New York Times Advertisement?
I tend to agree with this article that the NYT ad may be misguided.

Norway
In related news, this poster is appearing all over Oslo, Norway. Spotting it the other day was one of those unwordly moments where you're seeing a little-known niche thing becoming mainstream. Then yesterday I had a meeting with the IT manager at a government agency; those guys have always been Internet Explorer users, and now Firefox was running on the guy's desktop. The fact that Firefox is actively competing with IE now is going to be good for the Internet.

Top Affiliates on Spread Firefox all Turkish?
This is offtopic but it has been bugging me. How are all the recent top affiliates spots taken by Turkish webmasters on Spreadfirefox? Turkey is a country where not even 20 percent of the population is connected to the net. These bastards might be using scripts to pump up their button referals, to promote their sites on spreadfirefox. There is no way they can get so much more recent referals than a heavily trafficked site like broadbandreports(dslreports).

Re:Local Web Site Ads
As the original poster of the mentioned article about Firefox in Saugus my point was that the New York Times article idea may not be the most effective because many of the New York Times readers are still reading newspapers because they haven't figured out the Internet yet.
I'd personally like to see the energy being spent to go into more effective advertising. The article promoting Firefox on Saugus.net is meant to be just one example... Saugus.net has a history of promoting free software, though; I'd like to see more local sites without such a history getting into the act.

Local Web Site Ads
How many of the New York Times readers will even know what a browser is?
I think web site promotions will at least be targeting a better audience. In Massachusetts a couple local sites have now started doing so:
Here's an article discussing it further. -
SpreadFirefox
Firefox has been a 100% grass-roots effort to date. SpreadFirefox.com, the site devoted to informing people about Firefox's benefits over IE, has 35,000 members, basically volunteers that provide free advertising.
Everything is not well though. They are being a little too secretive about the status of the NYT ad, which garnered $250,000 from the community. Threads have begun to pop up about what exactly happened to the ad, and some people are starting to whisper "refund":

Re:Not for the US
You're wrong.
This was done by using umbilical cord stem cells. This has far fewer ethical problems and George Bush said on many occassions he fully supports the use of umbilical cord stem cells.
This is a huge advance, getting results without the ethical issues that many people struggle with.

Waiting for Verification
This is absolutely exciting, stem cell research potentially producing real results. And even better, by use of umbilical cord stem cells. Results without the ethical issues.
I just can't wait to see this research be verified. Seems like too many scientific research teams release their results early and without complete verification, hoping to get more funding from the buzz created.
In the end, this is really exciting. Can't wait to see how this develops.

Re:fluxbox
Making fluxbox and its kin usable winds up requiring I run half a dozen other apps. Xfce is those apps, bundled together. You can think of it as Gnome done right.
Incredible! Does this mean a base installation of XFce includes Firefox, Abiword, Emacs, GVim, The Gimp, GPhoto, Inkscape and Scribus? These are the apps I require in order to make Fluxbox usable.

I read my mail in mutt and I like that (*hint* , it lets me use vim to compose) , chat with xchat etc.. Mozilla Suite might have been overshadowed by it's leaner sibling

Re:Where is the NY Times Ad?Seems like there is a little delay, but everything is fine:
So what's up with the ad? Rob Davis and I are managing the production of the ad and making sure that it gets done to our exacting standards. It's painstaking work, but we are committed to getting the ad in print sometime in early to mid-December. We've got a good deal of the design and thinking behind it worked out, so expect a preview sometime next week (we can't wait either)! Of course, embarking on this kind of design project is no easy task. Frankly, we need some help (what, you thought you could donate and leave the hard work up to someone else?!). So here's what I need and here's how we're gunna do this:

Re:No links?!?
Yeah, it's too gosh-darn bad. Not that the Mozilla servers aren't going to start getting batshit insane from all the traffic anyway. Why not just completely do them in now?
(You will note that Spread Firefox is mostly down at the moment.) -

Firefox & IE
The more people use Firefox, they are more likely to use Google instead of MSN Search, since Google is integrated in Firefox. And since the 1.0 release, the start page is http://www.google.com/firefox.
Future versions of IE will ofcourse try to use a similar search box that would use MSN search and won't let the users add/change the search engine, unlike Firefox - in true M$ style.

Re:Marketing problem
"I think Mozilla's biggest problem is their marketing strategy, or lack thereof."
www.spreadfirefox.com is the marketing campaign, whom you might remember from such features as "raising $250000 in a month from donations and buying a NYTimes advert" covered recently.
The marketing probably won't be as obvious as companies which pour that much money into advertising every month, but it's doing okay for a non-profit foundation.
The people who use it (i.e. everyone technical) probably helps too, as they tend to recommend it at every opportunity. -
Re:Sensationalist /. headlines
Whoopsie. Swamii forgot to mention that SP2 breaks stuff as well as fixes stuff, further perpetuating the fact that MS can't do stuff right the first time, the second time, or the THIRD time, so it's not worth bothering in the first place.

Take the "5 days with Firefox" challengeThis is mainly aimed at Windows users (we know you're there!), but here it goes:
- Read the "Why Use Firefox?" document
- Go download Firefox and install it
- Use Firefox as you default browser for 5 days
- If, after 5 days, you're still not convinced that Firefox is the best browser there is, uninstall it and switch back

They Got 'Political Capital' with Us
Novell's actions over the past year has really helped them gain some 'political capital' with me, and I believe the rest of the community. I really want to believe that they will keep making the right decisions, and they will keep working with the OpenSource Community.
For example, I've been running RedHat servers for the past 6 years. I am happy with RedHat, even through a few problems here and there. But I'm planning to move toward Suse, because I'm so impressed with Novell's recent work.
They can really change that momentum with the community quickly, by making the wrong decisions. So I really really hope this doesn't mean a change in what they plan to do in the future.

The Stage is Set
This is very exciting, alternative sources of energy are getting closer and closer to becoming more viable. After reading an article about how rising oil prices are helping alternative energy, I think the stage is getting set for a real revolution. Being realistic, we have a long way to go,
Miyasaka says that the next goal is to increase the charging voltage and the charge-discharge capacity to a practically and industrially useful level for applications.

What's Your Prediction?
Someone should start up a site that everyone can place predictions and bets on the day that Spirit and Opprotunity dies.
It should be like the site that let everyone bet when the next big version of Linux was coming.
It'd be good clean fun for geeks,

Moving the Groupwise/Suse
I'm in the process of getting rid of our Windows 2000/Exchange server and moving to use Groupwise running off Suse Linux. We're planning to have it all done by January of next year.
I'm excited and anxious to get this done, I'm looking forward to a lower TCO.

In order for their idea to work, they'd actually need to have real and factual material to put on their Groklaw 'archrival'. Otherwise the new site would've been ripped appart.

What's the Big Fuss
I graduated from a Catholic High School a few year back and one of the Priests said it best,
'Who are we to say how God created or didn't create the World. God could've could've chosen to create the creatures in 7 days or God could've chosen to create the creatures in the world with evolution'
I really don't see the big fuss, whether God created the world one way or another, it doesn't affect the core basis of my beliefs. This has little to do with morality and my day to day life.
It does turn out to be a lively debate that can go on for hours between two opinionated people. And my guess is that those two people usually care more about looking smarter than the other, than they care about their beliefs and Morality.

Re:The best will be a mix-and-matchCall me crazy, but I think open source alternatives to commonly used Windows apps will turn the tables eventually.
My fiance and I have replaced MS Office with Open Office, Outlook Express with Thunderbird, Internet Explorer with Firefox, etc.. All of which *also* run on linux.
If these apps required a chunk of cash to use, more people would have second thoughts on even trying them, since most users already purchased apps (Windows-only often) to meet their needs.Once I can fulfill my computer needs on Linux I'll switch (yes gaming=needs).
Until then, I'll tweak WinXP to my liking and make good use of my firewall and antivirus software.

Dreaming in Hibernation
I wonder what the dreams would be like in extended Hibernation. I get some crazy dreams sometimes, what happens when you don't wake up for a few weeks?
I wonder what stage of sleep you would be in, REM sleep? Or would it be a differege stage that has fewer dreams?
I'm really curious what the studies will find out about dreams in Hiberantion.

Re:Hehe
From the FAQ:
How many names will fit in the ad?
A single full-length column of a newspaper has a few thousand words. Rest assured, we've done our homework. We will be able to accommodate several thousand names in a readable font size and still provide a very attractive and compelling advertisement. We have already mocked up some designs, and we will solicit input from the community about them in the coming weeks. -
Re:Seems a shame to waste it on a newspaper adFTFM
the ad is less than $50,000

Table...
95% of IE bugs come for table management (too much nested table and it comes up with unknown error, padding and margin, css incompliances, etc etc)
And still 87% of population uses IE 5/6. So like my roommate told me, developpers know FX is better, but we still have to be compliant with IE. Hopefully with the ad coming this may change (though with the predictions of 10% of market be end of 2005 we might design for IE for still the next decade?).
Table being disabled here, At least we cannot do it on Slashdot... and have goatse spam of a new nature.
